— rdbrewer Everything bad is good for you. I wrote about this last July.
In Sleeper, Woody Allen's character, the owner of a health food store, wakes up in the future to find that junk food is good for you, among other things. It's a fish out of water story. "The Sleeper Curve" is an expression that acknowledges the fact that much of the absurd humor in the movie is coming true. The expression comes from a book by Steven Johnson, Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter.
Here are some of the items from that post:
- High-fat diets are good for you.
- High-fat diets help you lose weight.
- Steak and lard and bacon are good eats.
- Low salt diets increase the risk of death.
- Diet soda makes you fat.
And now? From Time Magazine, any blood pressure-lowering benefit of reduced salt intake is offset by other changes. This goes further than the study linked above because it outlines why low salt diets increase the risk of death. It turns out salt helps your body get rid of bad cholesterol.
Danish researchers report in the American Journal of Hypertension that reducing sodium consumption led to a 1% drop in blood pressure in people who had normal pressure readings, and a 3.5% drop in those with hypertension. But other changes may offset those benefits: people who cut dietary salt also saw a 2.5% increase in cholesterol levels and a 7% boost in triglycerides. Like high blood pressure, elevated levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are risk factors for heart disease. Excessive triglycerides can also contribute to diabetes.
(Emphasis mine.) What, you mean tweaking an ultra-complex system based on incomplete information and then telling others to do the same can have unintended bad consequences? No way!

The evidence that dietary fat correlates with heart disease “does not stand up to critical examination,” the American Heart Association concluded in 1957. But three years later the association changed position — not because of new data, Mr. Taubes writes, but because Dr. Keys and an ally were on the committee issuing the new report. It asserted that “the best scientific evidence of the time” warranted a lower-fat diet for people at high risk of heart disease.
The association’s report was big news and put Dr. Keys, who died in 2004, on the cover of Time magazine. The magazine devoted four pages to the topic — and just one paragraph noting that Dr. Keys’s diet advice was “still questioned by some researchers.” That set the tone for decades of news media coverage. Journalists and their audiences were looking for clear guidance, not scientific ambiguity.
...
But when the theories were tested in clinical trials, the evidence kept turning up negative. As Mr. Taubes notes, the most rigorous meta-analysis of the clinical trials of low-fat diets, published in 2001 by the Cochrane Collaboration, concluded that they had no significant effect on mortality.
Mr. Taubes argues that the low-fat recommendations, besides being unjustified, may well have harmed Americans by encouraging them to switch to carbohydrates, which he believes cause obesity and disease. He acknowledges that that hypothesis is unproved, and that the low-carb diet fad could turn out to be another mistaken cascade. The problem, he says, is that the low-carb hypothesis hasnÂ’t been seriously studied because it couldnÂ’t be reconciled with the low-fat dogma.

Okay, it's totally awesome that a post referencing Sleeper is apparently posted from the future.
I have this wacky theory that the human body is complicated and that what works for one person may not work for another. Just tossing that out there. Insty has this on-going snark about how if a private health care provider gave patients the information that the gov't. gives and that leads to all the bad stuff that it does, that entity would be sued into oblivion.
You know what the best nutritional advice is? You can eat anything you want. You just can't eat all of it. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go shove my face into a bowl of cheetos.

The diet soda one I buy, but I don't know if the other sweetener-- the one in Coke Zero, Pepsi Max, and other non-diet diet drinks-- works (or doesn't work) the same way.
Have there been any studies that contradict the "balanced diet and some exercise" plan?

What consensus I found was there is no consensus as to diet. However most of the newer research indicated that for the large majority of the population salt intake was not an issue. It is only an issue for people who are salt sensitive or who have congestive heart failure.
As far as the rest of the stuff goes fat is most bad for you because if you eat a lot of it and don't exercise it makes you fat. That and lack of exercise drives up the bad cholesterol which some or questioning now for heart problems.
However almost all agree on these things for heart problems as causes.
1. Genetics/family history
2. Smoking
3. Age
4. Lack of exercise/overweight
5. High blood pressure (usually caused by 4)

Just read the words I bolded for you.
"There are no fewer than fifty days to set the course for the next few decades. So as we convene here we carry great responsibilities and the world is watching. If we do not reach a deal over the next few months, let us be in no doubt, since once the damage from unchecked emissions growth is done, no retrospective global agreement in some future period can undo that choice. By then it will be irretrievably too late, so we should never allow ourselves to lose sight of the catastrophe we face if present warming trends continue."

The health effect elephant in the room that nobody talks about is the constant cloud of poison gas we live in...replacing our oxygen supply with unbreathable car exhaust is going to have an effect.
I'm not a moonbat, just saying. If you put someone in a garage with a car, close all the doors and windows and start the engine, they'll die. So what's the difference between that one car in that one garage and 150 million cars and the breathable atmosphere from zero to 10,000 feet, which is the only breathable part?
I'm pretty sure you need oxygen to burn fat.

One of the things that mapping the human genome was supposed to help with was understanding individual biochemisty, so that your doctor could prescribe-- or tailor-- better drugs based on an individual's quirks.
Like how aspirin works on some people's headaches, others swear by Alleve, only on a much bigger and more complex scale.
Also, I want to point out my theory about health books: People usually read them to justify what they're already doing, or would like to.

Coca-cola did research in the late 70s that showed people who consumed diet soda wanted a sweeter drink with less bite than regular Coke. This is the reason why Diet Coke has a completely different formula than regular Coke, and why Coke Zero is a different drink. Diet Coke was formulated to be sweeter, whereas Coke Zero is formulated to taste like regular Coke. Remember "New Coke" in the 80s? That was just Diet Coke with sugar instead of aspartame.
So if a consumer of diet soda tends to have a sweet tooth, chances are he's consuming more than just diet soda. That's the reason diet soda drinkers are still getting fat.

Yep, my cardiologist told me the same thing about 3 months ago. Keep in mind that most of these folks were educated 20 or 30 years ago. Some follow all the latest literature, but I have a feeling that most don't.
However, on the salt thingy I did an experiment myself. I did a full day of hourly BP readings and logged them with a normal diet in which I ate normal stuff, no salt worries. The next day I ate salted potato chips all day i.e. heavy salt diet. took hourly BP readings. Absolutely no difference. From that I took it that the recent research was correct.

Modern exhaust catalysts are remarkable things. For the most part car exhaust is now reduced to CO2 and water vapor. The other gasses are something like 1-5% combined.

You're not a moonbat really? You make an argument like one, ignoring known facts and using broad dissimilar situations.
The toxic gas in automobile exhaust is CO carbon monoxide, the highly reactive cousin to CO2. It bonds with hemoglobin displacing oxygen and in this way causes death. It is highly reactive and shortly becomes CO2 once it gets into the atmosphere. Once it is CO2 it is reprocessed back to O2 in photosynthesis. Buildup of toxic quantities of CO in the atmosphere is just not possible for this reason. Oh and the largest contributors to CO concentration are fires, and volcanoes, not combustion engine exhaust.
Your type of idiot childish analysis is why environmental regulation is overburdensom in this country; and a huge contributor to our manufacturing downturn.

I am prone to gout as well. Beer is ESPECIALLY high in purines as are all spirits distilled from grains.
Cocoa, beer, mushrooms, asparagus, spinach, organ meats can all trigger an attack. Even high doses of vitamin C. The key is eating a lot of each or in combination. Also, drink as much water as possible. I also take a water pill for my pressure and that can aggravate it. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at November 10, 2011 12:26 PM
I have gout, as well. I stopped drinking beer about a year ago, much beer anyway, and have had no gout attacks. I'm torn between beer wonderful beer and suffering the worst pain I have ever felt in my life a couple of times a year. It's a quandary.

Posted by: KG at November 10, 2011 08:34 AM (LD21B)
CO is nasty stuff, but there's a certain threshold for it to do you harm. The harm it causes doesn't scale with concentration (i.e., although one part per thousand will kill everyone who breathes it, one part per billion will not kill one person in a million, it'll kill no one). It's been explained to you why its concentration can't build up in the atmosphere to the levels it does in your garage, but you didn't like that.
Irrespective of pollution, air is toxic. Oxygen has unpaired electrons. These cause radical damage to living systems. We have evolved superb systems to repair that damage. They catch almost all the mistakes. The ones they miss will kill us eventually.
So the air we breathe is toxic to us no matter how pure it is.

I noticed the delay word, too. We're supposed to be grateful I guess.
On the diet topic, I remember a popular diet book from about ten years ago that argued the best diet is the one that closely resembles what humans have eaten for thousands and thousands of years: lots of meat, fruit and vegetables, but minimize processed foods. Makes sense to me since it's what we ate as we evolved.
Posted by: Retread at November 10, 2011 08:34 AM (nhPrE)
It's really not that complicated ... our dietary requirements are encoded into our DNA - and they were put there by thousands of years of evolution. Early man was a BIG GAME hunter and this cannot be denied. He evolved to eat RED MEAT, White Meat, fish. He had no agriculture though he did eat rabbit foods when he discovered them - and he didn't eat them in the winter at all because they didn't grow then.
Eskimos lived on a staple of whale blubber - pure fat.
The liberals got ahold of the diet science the same way they got ahold of the climate science. In order to destroy Western Civilization - they created this myth that the stuff encoded into our DNA from our very origins is bunk - and we should all eat rabbit food.
Rabbit food has reduced testosterone in western males - and we now see birth rates in steep decline. Rabbit food makes you passive - and we now see western males being feminized into "beta males". It's disgusting. Eat Red Meat - builds testosterone - makes men ... men.

I've made many trips to China. I can remember seeing a blue sky on only a handful of occasions. Mostly its lead gray. The smog is awful.
Water is even scarier. When you fly over bodies of water, you can see plumes of yellow or brown material pouring into them. I use bottled water but it probably is just the same.

When I was 25 or so with the first attack I thought I'd kicked the bed post and fractured my toe during the night. Limped to work, by mid-day I could barely walk.
Extremely painful. Although the kind of pain that is easy to bear since it's just a toe. I'll stress out more over a bad case of heartburn since I have a family history of heart disease. Start getting pains in your chest and head and, at least in me, it triggers more worry about something serious.
With gout it mainly just is extreme pain in my big toe. Like somebody smashed it with a hammer.
Red meat and red wine seem to be my main triggers. But I mainly eat chicken these days and haven't had an attack in years.

I've got elevated cholesterol. At first it was so high the doctor gave me a raft of shit about it. So I just avoided most dairy products, ate lean meat and lots of oatmeal. My cholesterol dropped pretty quickly.
I switched doctors a few months ago and got tested. The new doc says I have an "elevated" cholesterol level but apparently not high enough to concern him greatly. So I went back on a low cholesterol regimine.
I can eat a daily diet with less than 50% RDA of cholesterol with little or any sacrifice. Occasionally I splurge (had pizza and stromboli for birthday dinner) but I expect my level to drop by my next test.
My sister gave me a 5.1 oz. bag of Lindor truffles yesterday. It'll probably last until Easter.

Let it go almost 2 weeks before I finally called the doc.

What was interesting to me was it described pretty much what I grew up on, meat and a couple of veggies for dinner and fruit in season for dessert. Cake once in a while if we were lucky.

IMO, I don't believe fluoride has much of anything to do with cavity prevention. I have great teeth. I very rarely get cavities and when I get my teeth cleaned, my hygienist says that my teeth are extraordinary. I use non-fluoride toothpaste and have for years. I also filter fluoride out of my drinking water, so I ingest little to no fluoride. Just brush and floss your teeth and you won't have Brit chompers.
All four of my grandparents lived into their mid to late 90s. All four ate lard, salt, bacon, sausage, head cheese (!)...two of them smoked. I think genetics plays the biggest role of all in how an individual's innards handle things.

The problem I see with the nomadic or caveman diet is that we would have to suppose that they knew what even we with our science and research haven't nailed down yet. And it is very likely that they simply ate what they could, when they could get it.
Early humans ate plenty of fruit, nuts, berries, tubers and every other kind of edible vegetable they could find. Our dentition proves we are omnivores. There's nothing wrong with fish, fowl, pork or red meat, either. It's a matter of balance.

Genetics play a larger role than anybody is willing to admit. As for gout -- a great home remedy is dark red cherry juice concentrate. It's expensive ($15.00/bottle) but if you start drinking it at the outset of gout symptoms (and elevate/don't use the affected joint) it works wonders.

Key is that either God, or Evolution, designed these bodies to survive. I believe that if we LISTEN to our bodies, they will 'tell us' what it needs.
I'm 52, with a Family history of very high Cholestorol, and High Blood pressure, and I eat EVERYTHING they tell me not to. I'm eat a LOT of Red Fattty meat, some Carbs, don't really like deserts... and take vitamins so I don't have to eat as many vegetables...
I do however, EXCERCISE.
I take NO medication.
I'm the only one in the Family, whose blood pressure, and Cholesterol, is in normal ranges...
Yet they keep trying to tell ME how I 'should' be eating...

Years and years of repeatable experiments? Something the AGW community has yet to produce, a repeatable result that concludes the world is warming. I know you think mankind is all that; But he ain't. All of our activities produce less than 5% of total CO2 that is made. Our 40 billion barrel a day habit, not particularly new news. Yeah whatever it's going to do, it's done it.
China is your antithesis. You want to ban sh*t that won't harm anyone. China doesn't care enough to ban the really dangerous stuff.
Reality; in fact sanity, lies somewhere between your envirofascism and China's enviro-apathy, and quite a bit less draconian that what we currently have.
