The Third Day. [ArthurK]
— Open Blogger

Here's some quotes from Ace today.

PPP: Democrats Have 7 Point Advantage In Generic Congressional Ballot; Blogger Opines They'd Win House If Elections Were Held Today

Unbelievable.

I suppose I do believe it, but it's unbelievable. The public claims they understand we cannot rack up more trillions in unpayable debt, but resists any effort to cut spending.

I think they're right. And while this is a Democrat versus Republican issue, it's mostly an ignorance versus information issue.

The public is largely ignorant and prefers to remain so. They are confronted with two unpalatable, but necessary, choices -- A. high, stagnating, wealth-diminishing European socialist tax rates, or B. reductions in the welfare state, especially to middle class and higher income earners (and yes, many oldsters are quite rich), and they insist they want C., which is a continuation of ruinous levels of spending, but no taxes that touch their own wallets, oh, and also, they want the debt reduced.

That is my problem. That as a nation, a large number of us seem to be not only disconnected, and not only unserious, but addicted to indulgence in fantasy.

21% say it's on the right track.

Who the hell are these people?

But every time you think the public gets it...

Americans held mixed views on the best way to stimulate economic growth. Cutting spending, 49 percent, and taxing the wealthy, 46 percent, came highest, followed by investment in infrastructure, 34 percent.

But the public will continue caterwauling about foreign aid, waste and abuse, and "taxing the rich."

Feb 19th 2009 (Santelli's Rant) to Nov 2010 Elections = Day One.

Some people notice, get pissed, effect some change.

Lame Duck Session of 2010 to Debt Ceiling Deal = Day Two.

Some stuff blocked, not much accomplished. That group from the previous day begin to realize just how much work needs to be done. "We're gonna need a bigger boat". (Bigger Boat = more voters.)

I'm guessing that prior to Obama's inauguration most Americans have given very little thought to stuff like Hayek, Keynes and Macroeconomic Theory. Since things have been working out more-or-less for the better from 1776 to 2008 they've gone along with the elected leaders who've said, "We know what we're doing. Here's your entitlement check".

An economic crisis AND a severe recession brought new leadership to the White House in 2009. He said, "I know what I'm doing. Here's your stimulus check". Now, in the Summer of Obama, more people are beginning to notice - "Hey, this stuff isn't working out" They're not sure why. The vast majority of them have never even heard of Hayek, Road to Serfdom, Keynes, the Multiplier. They do hear the media saying those extreme Tea Party types want to burn everything down. It's not surprising that a good number don't know what to think and, conservatively, suspect the new thing (tea party) is to blame.

Your job is to correct that. Instead of saying "Obama Sucks" you should be familiar with how the Rule of Law was discarded during the Chrysler bankruptcy when the senior bondholders were screwed over in favor of the unions. And how things like that cause uncertainty for businessmen resulting in them holding on to that 2 trillion dollar cash stockpile. Or how the Grand Bargain Reagan struck during the 1980s that would deliver 3 dollars in spending cuts for each dollar of new taxes vanished like a mirage - which explains why current congressional Republicans are so adamant in their opposition to tax hikes. Explain why govt. is inherently inefficient* and limiting it allows it to do less damage. Know just how much money is actually spent on Foreign Aid. Have the numbers to show that if you not only taxed the rich but took all their money it still wouldn't solve the problem.

*(guys spending other people's money on things that don't concern them. for example)

If the number of economically aware voters stays like it is now all we'll be able to do - at best! - is fight a delaying action. I want to save America, not stretch out the decline!

It's ok to complain that the media is biased and rarely informs the public about economic reality. But I don't know how to change the media. But I can talk to One Person.

We don't need to convince every American. Not only is that hopeless there are a substantial number that want current policies continued. We need to reach enough people who never used to give a damn about economics that it matters and that current leadership Is Doing It Wrong.

On the other hand, the MBM is going to be relentlessly pushing the myth that it's the Tea Party's fault.

16 P. J. O'Rourke paraphrased Milton Freidman when he pointed out how people tend to have four different ways of spending money, depending on whose money:
You spend your money on yourself. You're motivated to get the thing you want most at the best price. This is the way middle-aged men haggle with Porsche dealers. You spend your money on other people. You still want a bargain, but you're less interested in pleasing the recipient of your largesse. This is why children get underwear at Christmas. You spend other people's money on yourself. You get what you want but price no longer matters. The second wives who ride around with the middle-aged men in the Porsches do this kind of spending at Neiman Marcus. You spend other people's money on other people. And in this case, who gives a shit?

The last one is Government.

Here's something to try -- when talking to your average lefty spouting the conventional wisdom the media told them:  just use the words: "I don't let the corporate media do my thinking for me."

It has several advantages: a) it makes the point that the folks yelling "get the corporations" the loudest are actually getting huge paychecks from "the corporations"; b) it reinforces the notion that everyone can think for themselves, and maybe they should try it; c) it opens the door to the discussion of where you can actually get info that is not filtered through the MFM first; d) for the most rabid class warriors, it puts them in a position of having to resolve a very weird conflict in their own head - (eg. how can I hate the rich and love Ted Turner?, or how can I be so opposed to corporate jets and swallow every bit of drivel GE throws my way?)  [You'll have to work your way slowly on this one cuz Teh Stupid is way, way strong.]  e) if nothing else, it tends to shut up the ones that think they can convince you of their bullshit and send them off to find some one dumber han you.

It's ok to complain that the media is biased and rarely informs the public about economic reality.

Yes, the media is biased and has an agenda -- but it doesn't really matter. If people don't want to hear it, they'll watch something else. Blaming "Wall Street fat cats" is easy and it makes them feel good, and it's cheaper than cocaine.

37 But I can talk to One Person.

Never underestimate the sway on the third person. The one just passively listening on a discussion. People become emotionally vested in argument and discussion once it has begun. You will rarely change an opinion during a discussion by direct discussion. You may, if you are lucky, get the person you are talking to to privately reassess their position. More likely though you will influence those sitting on the sideline, leaning perhaps against your side, but without having chosen one *yet*. That third person in the argument is the one you argue to. How do I convince the marginally interested onlooker to my position in this discussion. You will be far more effective that way, and it will temper any tendency you may have to show off-putting negative emotions, as you deftly defend that which you hold dear against those who would willfully destroy it.

One of the most prevalent arguments I hear is "You can't mess with people's Social Security, they paid for that."  People still beleive their Social Security money is locked in a vault somewhere when in fact the money was spent decades ago and Social Security is just another government welfare check backed by the tax receipts we expect from your grandkids.  Practically speaking, it's just part of our income tax now, but a lot of people can't seem to connect those dots.

Yes, many people are not interested in or knowledgeable about politics--and they make their voting decision on what they hear from others:  Spouses, friends, and people who seem  to know and care about politics and govt

So yes, you can influence the voting decisions of others.  Like TheMoose says, the ones not talking in the conversation are often listening.   Carefully

How much of its overall income does the average family pay back to the govt., State or Federal... this kind of thing.

Because it was a 'dog whistle' for racists. You see, any time you put a black man in a video with white women, it sends a secret signal to racists that black men are trying to steal all the white womens.

But, I must say that people aren't very receptive of this information even when you lay it out in calm, cool terms.

75 I say we all have plan for our liberal relatives. The night before elections we hide their car keys, cable TV remote and cause a sudden internet outage. We move all calenders one day back and tell them the election isn't for another day. We have When Harry Met Sally and An Inconvenient Truth cued up on their DVD players. We give them a coloring book titled Obamanomics For Dummies and a few dull crayons.

Make sure the crayons are child safe as we don't want anyone to get hurt.

82 Because it was a 'dog whistle' for racists. You see, any time you put a black man in a video with white women, it sends a secret signal to racists that black men are trying to steal all the white womens.

It was the same shit Chris Mattews and others pulled in 2006 about Corker/Ford.

That's projection.

Seriously, Chris has admitted that he's racist (but of the condescending paternalistic kind) and so everyone else must be racist and so if you're not liberal and guilty about it, you aren't doing it right.

One of the good ways to fight the libs is to use "projection" back on them. They're the ones who accuse us of bad motives, so we can just throw it back at them.

Here's another thing you can try -- swing the discussion to how they picked their favorite team.  For most people, their favorite team is just like their political party -- they picked it up young, and either in direct agreement or polar opposition to their parents preference.

Then you can point out that loyal fans get to drop their team if it leaves town.  Who the fuck is still a Boston Braves fan?  Or, Baltimore Colts, or Minne Lakers, or NO Jazz, or the Whalers, or .....?

For most of the voters we need -- their team did leave town -- they just haven't realized it yet.  If you have a non-government job and pay taxes and you still vote democrat, you might as well be a Cleveland Rams fan.  Your team left town a long time ago.

the full quote of stupid racism:

"I was trying to think about who he was tonight. It's interesting: he is post-racial, by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour. You know, he's gone a long way to become a leader of this country, and past so much history, in just a year or two. I mean, it's something we don't even think about. I was watching, I said, wait a minute, he's an African American guy in front of a bunch of other white people.

And here he is president of the United States and we've completely forgotten that tonight -- completely forgotten it. I think it was in the scope of his discussion. It was so broad-ranging, so in tune with so many problems, of aspects, and aspects of American life that you don't think in terms of the old tribalism, the old ethnicity. It was astounding in that regard. A very subtle fact. It's so hard to talk about. Maybe I shouldn't talk about it, but I am. I thought it was profound that way."

Woman, you need to refresh your memory.  About 2 months back I was throwing good natured inter-service poop.. and I got MOBBED by Marine moms.  Marine moms are more likely to throw a punch than their sons, and if you've ever been to a joint NCO club after midnight you know how much weight that statement carries.

151 My husband, the most easy-going, smartest man I know, walked in the door from work tonight as pissed as I've ever seen him.

Obama is already beginning to kill aspects of his business.  He went off on Obama and how he hates him (he's never said that).

I "gently" reminded him, "You are aware your entire family still worships his ass?"

He stormed down the hall to our bedroom.

155 @128:  I feel the same way about the feel-good-then Obama voter who is now remorseful.  But if we really do want to get more people on our side, we can't go around telling people to fuck off just because they used to vote with the crowd but are now starting to wake up as the country falls apart around them.  Being confrontationally holier-than-thou, even if you are in fact holier and can prove it, will more than likely cause an independent or conservative Democrat to hunker down in his anti-GOP shell.

Yep. Use Socratic method, i.e., lead someone to your conclusion by asking him questions, but not pedantically; phrase them as requests for information.

As a corollary, ask the liberal what it would take to change his mind on a given issue. Socialism can work? OK, what would it take to convince him otherwise. How 'bout going 0 for 75 years? Oh, socialism needs the right people? How are we to recognize these people? And how do we guarantee we always find and get the right people? What system doesn't work if you get the right people running it? (Hell, monarchy would be the ideal form of government if we could guarantee always getting selfless philosopher-kings running it.)

194 It would be very helpful if conservative bloggers and commenters and all around conservative smart people actually thought it was part of Republican lawmakers' jobs to help turn public opinion around.  Holding votes without defending and explaining, over and over again, is nothing more than window dressing to garner the admiration of Charles Krauthammer.  If you want things to change, tell Republican leaders it's part of their job, their duty, to use the english language to change peoples' minds, and to criticize, frequently and repeatedly, Obama and his Democrat/Media accomplices.  If you continue to let them off the hook, continue to pretend that's not part of their job as long as they hold a nice show vote now and then, go easy on them because obviously they just don't want to do a vital and non-optional part of their job, you'll get poll votes like this and the continued decline.

The twelve.  Six and six.  The great unwashed unthinking stupid middle wants compromise, but the six won't compromise with the other six.  A meeting in the middle, with the Rs agreeing to tax increases and the Ds agreeing to real entitlement cuts, ain't ever gonna happen, and if something did, it would be another deal that dooms us.

But I'll try.  I'll practice my pitch, get my facts straight, work on my argument so that it comes across as soft as possible.

Meanwhile, the JEF will do everything possible to come across as the great unifier, and the MFM will be waving the pom poms, and this convincing gig will get even harder to do.

Posted by: Societyis2Blame at August 10, 2011 06:38 PM (yK8YH)

I got this in an email today.  Send it to the ijits who believe in wunerful, wunerful SS.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH US ?

Remember, not only did you contribute to Social Security but your employer did too. It totaled 15% of your income before taxes. If you averaged only 30 K over your working life, that's close to $220,500. If you calculate the future value of $4,500 per year (yours & your employer's contribution) at a simple 5% (less than what the govt. pays
on the money that it borrows), after 49 years of working (me) you would
have $892,919.98. If you took out only 3% per year, you receive $26,787.60 per year and it would last better than 30 years, and that's with no interest paid on that final amount on deposit! If you bought an annuity and it paid 4% per year, you would have a lifetime income of $2,976.40 per month. The folks in Washington have pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever had.

Entitlement my ass , I paid cash for my social security "insurance"!  Insurance is what they called it, but, if any insurance company handled your money the way the US government did, the State regulators would shut it down and the executives would be charged with fraud.
Just because they "borrowed" the money, doesn't make my benefits some kind of charity or handout ! Congressional benefits, aka free health care, outrageous retirement packages, 67 paid holidays, three weeks paid vacation, unlimited paid sick days, now that's charity, welfare,
and they have the nerve to call my retirement entitlements !

Someone please tell me what the HELL is wrong with all the people that run this country!
We're "broke" & can't help our own seniors, seterans, orphans. We are about to cut their benefits to save money.

Yet, in the last months we have provided aid to Haiti, Chile, and Turkey. And now Pakistan, the country that gave sanctuary to bin Laden, literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS! Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid, not even annual COLA increases because their fudged numbers show the there has been no inflation (for, how many now, 3 years?) nor do our seniors get any breaks while our government and religious organizations pour hundreds of billions of $$$$$'s and tons of food to foreign countries!

They call Social Security and Medicare an entitlement even though most of us have been paying for it all our working lives and now when its time for us to collect, the government is running out of money. Why did the government steal, I mean "borrow" from it in the first place?

We have hundreds of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans.

AMERICA: a country where we have homeless without shelter, children going to bed hungry, elderly going without 'needed' meds, and mentally ill without treatment - etc., etc.

Imagine if the GOVERNMENT gave 'US' the same support they give to other countries.

207 It's not too late people! All you have to do is explain things to them in simple terms and not be condescending. For example, it helps people to visualize what $1 Trillion looks like by saying, "You take $100 bills (emphasize that they're one hundred dollar bills), stack them seven feet tall. Then once you've filled in an entire football field you will have $1 Trillion. It works every single time. Especially when you say we owe 14 football fields. Very easy to understand. Most Americans genuinely care about these issues but it's not that they're stupid it's that the problems seem too complex.

All this strategizing posits  (to me, at least), that you'd actually WANT to interact with a lefty. Not gonna happen here, I had my fill during the 60's with that unending shitstorm they dropped on us vets, so no thanks to further contact with ANY of them. For whatever reason.

Now, when contact is made, it's look them up and down, spit on their shoes and walk away. There hasn't been one of them with the sack to react as you'd think, which isn't surprising.

So have fun, I'll work the phone lines, drop flyers or anything you want, but personal contact is out.

I've had many conversations with friends and coworkers about "too much money going to other countries". Anybody take a guess the percentage of our budget that goes to foreign aid. Take a wild guess.

So who has actually managed to change a mind when it comes to politics with facts and history and economic theory? I haven't. Maybe I'm just not effective.

After a while, you have to chalk it up to genetics.  For decades, libs have infested our schools and dumbed down anything that used to resemble coherent reasoning and rational thought.  But even so, we still have half the country that stays stubbornly conservative.  Morons need to get busy IYKWIMAITTYD.

I admit I've only changed a few, the rest, well...it sometimes helps to make them doubt their facts. Be nice about it. Say things like, "I haven't heard that." or "That's odd, because I've read..." stuff like that. Most of them just make shit up anyway lol I find that most people liberals that follow politics want to make themselves look smart.

I'm sure it's in the single digits, but that little screed above is effective at getting the "I'm not political" types to finally start realizing they've been had - and how.

That is, the guy who has just noticed that things are going horribly wrong and is receptive to info that doesn't come from NBC Nightly News. We're not going to get to 100%. Adding 3-5% is possible, plausible and just barely enough.

It's also a great way to start a conversation going--preferably away from foreign aid which takes up a whopping one percent of the budget. You can use that fact to segue into what reallyeats up spending: entitlements.

215 Please don't speak to any independents.  I'm an independent.  Have been at this site since the day mccain announced Sarah Palin and you are treating me horribly.  If you react to all the other independents the way you react to me well then you will lose them.  I mean you've wished me dead for God's sake and you wouldn't see your selves losing your patients with independents?  No, don't talk to them.  It's the only hope the republican candidate will have.  Let them reach the independents on their own.

218 I am having one of these conversations on Facebook right now! Check what this guy is saying re: Obama...He is not a business leader. He came out of college and tried to help his community instead of going to a big law firm. He is an original thinker. Have you led a non profit group of volunteers? Original thinking is essential. And, unless you earn over $250k, you're paying less now than under Bush.

Posted by: Joffen at August 10, 2011 05:13 PM (EPcuy)

219 My response (in case anyone's interested): He went to Columbia University and Harvard Law School. In fact, he was President of the Harvard Law Review. In fact, he went to a "big law firm" for much longer than he was a community organizer (three years as organizer, law school for roughly 8 years). I don't get that point in any case. Barack Obama has increased our national debt much faster and made it much worse than under Bush. The unemployment rate is hovering at 10 percent, and businesses are afraid to do much hiring. The stock market is tanking...the economy is awful...do I need to continue? With all due respect, can you please tell me what makes him an original thinker? From where I sit he is using the same tired liberal ideas that never work.

Well to respond to that I think my first claim would be prove it, and if it is true thank the GOP in Congress from preventing the tax cuts to expire.  The next would be, well its a good thing since his policies have made healthcare cost more, gas cost more, and food cost more.

Huh. Go figure...

Posted by: CoolCzech at August 10, 2011 05:26 PM (kUaEF)

222 This is his response: ‎1. Law school is not a big law firm. 2. 2 wars and tax cuts account for most of that increased debt. To my knowledge, those were in place before he took office. 3. The bank bailout (more debt) was signed by President Bush. The banks are sitting on the cash we gave them, not lending it. That is why a lot of companies are not hiring. If the CEO took a million less in salary, he could hire some people. The stock market is tanking. And where are they fleeing to?? The same bonds that just got downgraded. Most investors think they are a pretty good buy right now. The economy went into recession after the tax cuts that were supposed to stimulate the economy. As far as an original thinker, his auto bailout did not only save the auto manufacturers but also the millions who work to supply them. And what, the companies have paid back more than expected and are profitable again. If only they lent money like the banks. They need to free up the lending for the economy to get better

That's a fucking lie right there.  They did not pay back the bailout money.  They used some of the bailout money to pay back a previous loan from the government.

224 Have these one on ones all the time on FB. Some lib friends of mine will put up some crap from HuffPo or whatever and the debate begins. The guy is a nice guy but is a lib and most of his FB friends are libs. I can't let him just post that stuff because its like an echo-chamber, so I get in the comments and refute it - with facts. The tax debates are really good. I'll let them go on and on about we need more revenue and fairness and taxing the rich and then ask a very simple question - which I ask repeatedly - How much should we raise taxes then? If we need to raise taxes as you say, if you really believe the 'rich' aren't paying their fair share, then how much more should they pay? Give me a %, give me a dollar amount. Then hit them with the stats and figures and the math... You know what answer I get back every time? They never give me a % or dollar figure. They just say, "Well, I don't know how much but we just need to raise it" or some variant. They won't commit cause then I can tear them apart about that and then I could ask, "OK, if that's the % - and it turns out it isn't enough, then what?" I engage a few people in the comments this guy has on his FB page and dozens of his lib friends (and others) see it where they wouldn't normally. I'm trying brutha...

Oh please!  Quit your fucking whining and carrying on.  Get your scrawny ass upstairs and whine to your dear precious momma.  Most here don't give a flying fuck what you think or 'feel'.  DO YOU NOT FUCKING GET THAT??

The people that give a half a damn about what you have to say, just don't know you yet, they will in time.  The majority of us know.

You have shown your true colors around here, and even those who tried to give you support and knowledge now know what a pusillanimous twat of a bitch you are.

I've always wondered how someone like you could hang around knowing that everybody despises you.  But yeah...I've decided your just like obama...a zero..a nothing...very narcissistic and so full of yourself that you just couldn't imagine anyone not falling at your feet, kissing your ass, and hanging on every word you utter and every breath you breath.  But, yeah, you are exactly like him.

You know what...there are somethings I disagree with  my "Independent"  friends about, but I tell you what...YOU sure put them all in a bad light.

You are nothing but a sack of sniveling snot that is not fit to tend to the lowest live form on this planet.

Now go read this to your mommy, so she can once again soothe your evil soul, and tell you how everyone is soooooo mean.

Then ask her, how can she not be so fucking ashamed to have raise a child like you.

226 I would have to disagree about just letting the Media, as a serious problem, be ignored.

There needs to be some pushback.

That could be more than just boycotts; how about some demonstrations? Or lawsuits?

They pump millions into liberal coffers with unpaid advertising and promotion so how about an FEC filing against them? They have become so blatant about it that the evidence might be there.

At least let's encourage those we approve of politically to challenge the Media at every turn instead of letting them define the narrative.

No more allowing the networks or newspapers to run any debates (or the League of Women Voters for that matter).
Why give them the opportunity to frame the debate?

The time to take these measures is NOW and not in the summer of 2012.

Call, email, write your Representative, Senator, Presidential candidate or the one you want to have and voice these concerns and your backing if they get in some reporter or reporterette's or a Pompous Pundit's face.

Tell the RNC and other Conservative organizations that you will not donate to anyone who is too cozy with the Media.

Remember, The Media needs the politicians. Without them they'll HAVE NO NEWS.  Yeah, yeah, they can make it up but that only works for so long and for so far. Eventually even the ones not really paying attention will realize something's up.

Oh and tell anyone who is interviewed by the Media should get some editorial control over what eventually is aired or printed. This can be as little as final approval before airing or printing or actual decisions about what questions are asked and how the interview is edited.

THEY ARE THE REAL ENEMY IN THE FIGHT FOR THE COUNTRY IN 2012.

Can anyone say that if the Media hadn't aided him that Obama would still have been elected? They may only sway 1% of the vote but that's MORE THAN ENOUGH TO WIN.

Here's how to fix the problem and pronto.

End payroll withholding of income tax.  Make everyone pay their taxes out of pocket quarterly like the despised self-employed "rich" do.  End the employer contribution to FICA too.  Make everyone pay the full 15%.

Do that and the Dems will go the way of the Whigs over night.

Guaranteed.
