The Three Little Bops.....Plus One
— Russ from Winterset

rdbrewer linked the YouTube clip of the original Looney Tunes classic in the sidebar a few days ago, and when I went to it and looked around a little I found this little gem. Seems that back in '93, a blues band at an Australian Music Festival played the whole soundtrack for this cartoon....and kept the timing tight enough that it almost seems like it could be an alternative soundtrack straight from the studio. That's pretty freakin' good. The only quibble I have is their slight deviation from the script at the end, but it's forgivable in context.

This is definitely one of my favorite cartoons from childhood, and I love that it's available on YouTube now. (My other favorite? That one with the two squirrels who lose their tree to the loggers, try to get it back from the lumbermill, and wind up horking a big pile of furniture from the delivery truck to replace the tree.) I'm putting it below the fold to keep the front page running silky smooth.

30 The singer on that cartoon, Stan Freberg, also did some legendary radio shows in the final days of network radio in the 1950s, as well as some famous TV commericals in the 1960s and 70s. He also was Warners' resident expert at memorably dumb voices, having done Junior Bear and Pete Puma.

44 Cute, but to be honest, modernizing the sound track in any way makes old cartoons less magical; the low-fi of the "original" (at least for me qua 1960's baby) helps make these cartoons something mysterious and alluring.

Warner's did a cartoon with a Price-sounding mad scientist (and Chuck Jones' big orange monster) going after Bugs Bunny. Hanna-Barbera did get the real Price to lend his voice to a late 1970s' series with Scooby Doo, about the time the studio realized that you couldn't play these mystery cartoons straight anymore, and they had to make fun of themselves a little (or the entire animation and writing staff probably would have slit their wrists over how low they had sunk from the days of the 1940s and 50s).

Friz Freleng told the story that under WB's longtime contract with Mel Blanc, he was the only one allowed to get voice credit (in exchange for Mel not working for any other studio), even when other voice actors worked with him. But when Friz made "Three Little Bops" and Freberg did all the voices, he said "This is stupid" and put Stan's name in the credits.

I never got to watch Looney Tunes because of stupid CCD--sure enjoyed spending my Saturday mornings with nuns...all that was on when I got home was Thundarr the Barbarian, which I knew to be an insult to my intellect even at the age of 8.

ParisParamus @#46: I agree wholeheartedly. Those original cartoon soundtracks are golden. I just appreciate all the hard work that went into learning the music and practicing enough to get the timing down cold.

If you don't have it already, look into the "Carl Stallings Project" CD. It's a soundtrack compilation of classic Looney Tunes music. I keep it in my car for background music on long trips, right next to "The Song of the Loon".
