The Travesty of the Republican Presidential Debates [Domenech]
— Guest Blogger

When did we decide that it'd be a great thing for the Republican presidential debates to be a bunch of gotcha questions from liberal Democrats?

Because that's what it's turning out to be.

Drew linked my observations below about the stupid nature of this crappy debate schedule - but there's an added nugget that I've learned just today.

So this next debate, sponsored by WaPo/Bloomberg and hosted on Bloomberg TV, was supposed to be exclusively about the economy. At least that's something, right? We've seen ridiculous sideshow questions for too long - let's get down to brass tacks and talk about economic issues which this whole election is going to end up being about. If you go to the WaPo site, it still says as much (emphasis mine).

The Washington Post and Bloomberg TV, in partnership with WBIN-TV and host Dartmouth College, present the first debate of the 2012 campaign focused exclusively on the issue that matters most to American voters: the economy.

But guess what: that's a lie.

I'm told that the debate organizers have informed the campaigns as of yesterday that only the first half of the debate will be about the economy. The second half will be a free for all.

And anyway, because they're including eight candidates (everybody but poor Gary Johnson), they're limiting things to thirty second answers. Again. Typical.

Oh, and one more bonus:

Charlie Rose will moderate the Bloomberg Washington Post Debate with co-moderators Washington Post political correspondent Karen Tumulty and Bloomberg White House correspondent Julianna Goldman.

Karen Tumulty. Hmm. Would that be the Karen Tumulty who is part of the same WaPo political journalism shop behind the biggest smear campaign yet of the 2012 cycle? Is that Karen Tumulty, Journolist member? The unbiased journalist who thought the 2010 election was Obama being "punished for his effectiveness"?

My only question is: will she personally bring a racist rock to plunk down on the dais?

The Repub candidates REALLY need to learn a little bit from Sarah Palin... in that she is now VERY selective of who interviews her.

There is NO reason why the various campaigns could not talk to each other, and CHOOSE who gives those debates.... allowing the LEFT to do so is just plain Stupid.

They are cedeing choice of the battlefield to the enemy.

Because Mitt Romney has spent the past 4 years perfecting his 30 second to 1 minute responses so he has no problem agreeing to this.  Especially since he knows to answer in a way that while not gaining any more supporters he's not alienating the ones he has, and everyone else can still consider him their fall back because his responses have been what you "expect" from him.

65 Why do Republicans assume Rubio will bring in the Hispanic vote as VP? Rubio is a, very white, Cuban. He's a Spaniard. The vast majority of Hispanics in America are Mexican. And most do not look like Rubio. They are mestizo. Central Americans are the next largest block, and they are even more Amerindian than Mexicans. Rubio helps in Florida. Which is important. But there's no reason to expect him to help with the hispanic vote in the southwest. The reason the LA Mayor VillasAJoka won in California is because he's mexican. Maybe Rubio will be able to attract the mexi vote, but Repubs seem to be thinking it'll be automatic.

I don't think he brings that vote.  He probably brings some of the "white guilt" Indy vote.  He would be "historic" and give them a good excuse to dump Obama.

Rubio's main appeal imho is that his personal history and skilled speaking style kind of make him the feel-good candidate.  And he's been a politician long enough (albeit not at the national level) to be unlikely to make unforced errors, while at the same time appealing to a good slice of the Tea Party folks.

That's because Romney isn't looking to "win."  He just answers so opinion doesn't change on him.  You know besides when he's acting like a democrat lying out of his ass about Perry wanting to kill grandma.  Just look at the "Is Obama a socialist?" question.  He used the full minute to answer that.  Do you know if he thinks Obama is a socialist or not?  Because I sure don't based on his answer.  He provides answers to what you already know about his positions and then plays evasive with everything else.

The guy wouldn't be able to answer "Do you love your mother?" without using a minute to answer.

82 Here's a list of event organizers / sponsors for all the debates. They represent a broad slice of media (of all flavors) as well as several of the largest right-wing political orgs, including of course the GOP. 1. Fox News and South Carolina Republican Party 2. CNN, WMUR-TV and New Hampshire Union Leader 3. The Daily Caller, Americans for Tax Reform (Grover Norquist) and Citizen Outreach Foundation 4. Fox News, The Washington Examiner and the Republican Party of Iowa 5. Senator Jim DeMint and the American Principles Project 6. Reagan Library, NBC News and Politico 7. CNN and the Tea Party Express 8. Fox News, Google and Florida Republican Party 9. Bloomberg, The Washington Post and WBIN-TV 10. CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference 11. CNBC and the Michigan Republican Party 12. CNN and the Republican Party of Arizona 13. ABC News and Republican Party of Iowa 14. Des Moines Register and Iowa Public Television 15. CNN and the Southern Republican Leadership Conference 16. Fox News and Republican Party of Iowa 17. National Journal, NBC News, the St. Petersburg Times, and the Florida Council of 100 18. ABC News and WMUR 19. Fox News and South Carolina Republican Party 20. Reagan Library, NBC News and Politico I'm not sure I buy the argument that the debates have somehow been hijacked by the left. I think the image problems resulting from the debates *coughPERRYcough* are not because of the questions, but because of the answers.

I think it would be a great debate if our top three candidates would respond to these leftists douchebags with only loud belches and farts.

How about they all walk on stage with a six-pack, pop one open immediately after getting introduced, and proceed to drink and joke amongst themselves while asking their own questions of the "moderators." If they drink fast enough, (or start drinking backstage ahead of time), then there's your, um, fuel.

Failing that, I like the suggestion upthread that all of them take a combative attitude with those lefty jerks and start asking them why they didn't ask the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure that same question. Or, just answer, "I'll reply to that question right after the President does" or "That's a question far better suited for the President."

It depends on the sponsors, IIRC. The first debate was sponsored by the South Carolina Republican Party, so the chairman would have decided along with the outlet and the candidates.

69What the candidates should do is the same as the Democommies do on the Fox Fair and Balanced debate. Answer a different question.

Example

Commie Moderator (to Perry): Why do you hunt at camps that are racist?

Perry: Obama hates the U.S. and has bankrupted it with wild spending that has accomplished nothing but increasing the debt.

Commie Moderator (to Romney): How did it feel to be the best Republican governor in MA?

Romney: I am great, would you like to buy one of my fine used cars?

Let's look at reality. Perry's dad was probably born in what, 1922 in Texas? Hmmm that's the year my dad was born in Arkansas. Let's see, would the mere mention of that cursed word freak him out since he'd heard it everyday of his life? Perry's dad was a rancher although a county commissioner and member of the school board. He just would not have reacted with a view toward the future becoming obcessed with a rock in the woods in west texas. God is that dumb.

Look, it's very nice that we have eliminated a "word" from all usage writte or oral because it reminded people of an upsetting era. However, we can't pretend that that word was like krptonite to every southerner born after the civil war. It just wasn't. My grandmother said "Colored" which she considered very polite. She was born in 1899.

For one, he's got the young man's combover. Hopefully he can get that fixed. Biden got the hairplugs, so it can be done. More importantly, he has a slightly robotic, autistic style of speaking. maybe I've just seen the wrong speeches. But I've never felt very moved emotionally. Also, dumb question, but how tall is Rubio? Just to be clear, I'd vote for Rubio in a heart beat. I like his policies. He just always seemed a bit geeky to me. Just so you know, Mormans don't technically join the church until age 8 when they are baptized because at that age they are considered old enough to make their own decisions. I caught some of his Reagan Library speech (at the beginning) and I thought he got off to a slow start, but more than that to me he's not an emotional speaker like a Giuliani or Fred or even Perry can be.  He's more cerebral.  Nevertheless, I watched his "maiden" floor speech and my recollection was that it was excellent -- and moving.

I'll answer it.

He walked past, probably thought and said that it was a tacky sign, and didn't think much else of it. Eventually he had it painted over.

Not everything has to be viewed through the prism of racial bigotry and anger.

Is my father, who calls Blacks "Negroes" because that's what he grew up hearing, a racist?

Am I a racist for laughing at Black jokes?

Oh, and I don't give a rat's ass about Romney's Mormanism, but it will be a big issue if he is the nominee.

"Governor Romney, will you try to change the laws in this country to allow bigamy"

"Governor Romney, will you state that you categorically reject the teachings of your church on matters of race?"

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sdildo (NJConservative) at October 05, 2011 02:05 PM (xFdca)

152 FOXNews, even a ways back: Polygamy was not just a historical footnote, but a prominent element in the family tree of the former Massachusetts governor now seeking to become the first Mormon president. Romney's great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, married his fifth wife in 1897. That was more than six years after Mormon leaders banned polygamy and more than three decades after a federal law barred the practice. Romney's great-grandmother, Hannah Hood Hill, was the daughter of polygamists. She wrote vividly in her autobiography about how she "used to walk the floor and shed tears of sorrow" over her own husband's multiple marriages. Romney's great-great grandfather, Parley Pratt, an apostle in the church, had 12 wives. In an 1852 sermon, Parley Pratt's brother and fellow apostle, Orson Pratt, became the first church official to publicly proclaim and defend polygamy as a direct revelation from God. Romney's father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, where Mormons fled in the 1800s to escape religious persecution and U.S. laws forbidding polygamy. He and his family did not return to the United States until 1912, more than two decades after the church issued "The Manifesto" banning polygamy. I'm sure once the general ramps up the media will have some *fair* questions loaded for Romney.

I agree with the things said about Rubio. He will be a very good politician long-term, but he is not a great speaker, and he can be more than a bit awkward to watch. Someone above said 'nerdy' and that sounds about right to me.

Republicans always end up trying to be too clever playing the identity politics game. Nominate experienced, conservative candidates who bring together the largest parts of the base with some independents, and things usually work out.

Yep. The general rule is "cock-up before conspiracy," but at some point, the difference between the two becomes entirely irrelevant.  Either the GOP elites actively collaborate in their own party's gelding, or they're too stupid to realize that they get owned on a continuing basis.  Not exactly confidence inspiring, is it?

He was not just another ordinary Joe. He was a politician with other ambitions. That no one will admit it was stupid politically for him specifically, to continue to renew a lease at a location still referred to as N/Head is what aggravates me.

Posted by: polynikes - Texan for Romney at October 05, 2011 02:20 PM (8c9g6)

198 As I've said for years, it makes ZERO sense to give the media ANY role in Republican primary debates other than allowing them to televise them.

The media sets the rules, decides who is in and out, picks the far-left panelists who then become a part of the story and the show and vie with each other to be the one who sinks a campaign with a killer question.

It's insane.

First of all, no "panelists" should be needed.  People running for the highest office shouldn't need anyone to lead them to the issues, they know what the issues are.  All we need is a neutral timekeeper to keep the time even.  And if Romney wants to spend ten minutes talking about his business record or Perry spends half an hour on Texas, let 'em talk - BUT when their total time for the debate is over, they get no more.  If they use up the time for a closing statement, tough.

Candidates can talk about their philosophy, any issue they want, ask others questions or answer questions - or not, let the people decide if they were justified or not.   Just keep the dang "Keepers of the News" the heck off the stage.

2) Supported a federal health insurance mandate and instituted government run health care, now a Federalist
3) Believes humans are causing global warming, or climate change, or whatever they're calling it this week.
4) Once supported "taxing private political contributions in order to finance publicly funded campaigns" and "advocated spending limits on congressional campaigns and suggested abolishing political action committees", now who the hell knows what his stance is.
5) Hates Mexicans, unless they're doing his yard work.

You get the picture.

204 This is a perfect example of the GOP LOSERship at work -- they don't have a clue about how to lead the GOP in any direction but down or, at best, in confused meaningless circles.

If the LOSERship could, for a moment, think out of the box, they'd take more control of this debate process by organizing them so the questions were selected by conservatives, tea party and talk show types.  But no, these sorts of folks the LOSERship fears, as they are a threat to the LOSERship's power.

Hence, the LOSERship goes along with all GOP debates being chaired by liberals...   Just like Democrats make sure their debates are chaired by conservatives?   Not...  What's wrong with this picture...?

To me the definition of ethnic has to do with how long ago your ancestors came here and how strongly you identify with that "home" country, which includes whether or not you grew up speaking that language. Ethnicity has nothing to do with color except insofar as color is a readily identifiable trait.

Yeah, completely destroying part of language because it is sometimes offensive depending on who is saying it and how it is being said (i.e., fine to use in a multi-platinum rap album or Showtime at the Apollo comedy gig) is indeed "very nice."  Depending on usage, the word in question can range from a positive term of endearment ("my [taboo]!") to an insult.   Restricting language restricts thought, and that's rarely, if ever, a good idea.

Win or lose in 2012, I think this is the last cycle that GOP candidates will dance to the MSM tune vis-a-vis debates.

By 2016, there will either be a Republican running for   re-election or it will be a free for all of information age/media savvy GOP candidates in their 40's who grew up instinctively avoiding or challening the liberal mdeia, & who will not countenance such a limited (and hostile liberal) bunch of debate options.

Either that or we'll be in Year 2 of Soylent Green meets Omega Man and the silky soft sensibilities of Manhattan-Beltway millionaire TV and print personalities wont matter as much as where do people get clean water and untainted bags of cheesy-poofs?
