Politico's Roger Simon, appearing on CNN's Reliable Sources, said being "being extreme perhaps and a little bit racist perhaps, gives you good bona fides in a Republican primary. It shows them you're on the same side as they are"

Racism is a semantic bludgeon used by the Left to achieve control of the social debate.
I don't know if Simon was being sarcastic or pretending to an intellectual insight, but it's always the same with these guys.
CNN - Reliable Sources. Yeah, there's an oxymoron.

I read "The Stand" about 30 years ago, and it is about the only whole novel of King's I ever read. Because King is a hacktastic novelist. His writing is juvenile and poorly structured and edited. He has stolen, plagiarized or copied about every horror/terror meme ever written. It's like he watched every old episode of the "Twilight Zone" and turned them into a novel or short story. A lot of his readers are not widely read or have not seen these things to be aware of what an unoriginal copycat he has been.
And after awhile he starts to copy himself

The comic is slow paced and a bit more exciting than the show. The whole point being you don't want to burn through every story arc you have before more is written. As for comments of it being "like a soap opera" that I have read here and there, the zomies and the apocalypse are the backdrop for the stories of the interaction between the living characters.
If you watch George Romero's original three zombie films, the zombie killing and feeding frenzies were a big part of the movies. Yet the depictions of the people who were affected by this plague or wrath of God were what made the movies more substantial.
Granted, TWD suffers from some pacing issues and the fact that they're trying to cater to what seems to be a liberal base (the episode entitled, "The Vatos" came close to being a deal breaker with me) but it is the only series of its kind. For that reason alone, I hope it is very successful so that there may be more zombie filled programs down the line.

1) Why on Earth would a writer place his characters in a traffic jam for three weeks? The narrative literally grinds to a halt.
2) One thing I've learned from movies and TV is that if you're in a disaster/apocalypse situation, and you need medical attention, you'll get it. The only catch is, he's a veterinarian.
I mean, seriously - the veterinarian gag?

"Night Shift" (Highlights: "The Mangler", "Trucks", "Sometimes They Come Back, "One For The Road"), "Skeleton Crew" (Highlights: "The Mist", "Cain Rose Up", "Word Processor of the Gods"and "The Monkey") "Different Seasons" ("The Body") were the best collections of his short works. Also, his earlier "Bachman Books" such as "Rage" and "The Running Man" are worth reading if you're a modern horror fan.
"Rage" is hard to find because King, in a fit of liberal guilt, disallowed it's reprinting because a brat who shot up a school in Kentucky back in the 90's said the book 'gave him the idea'.

The problem with "The Walking Dead" and the Spielberg "Jurassic Park" movies is a classic lack of sufficient firepower. If we learned nothing else from the last Rambo movie, a 0.50 cal machine gun would make short work of
A - Zombies, even a whole herd of zombies
B- Dinosaurs, even a T-Rex
These guys on "The Walking Dead" should find an abandoned Army Arsenal somewhere and get their hands on a Ma Deuce and 20 thousand rounds of ammo.
That approach could have also worked, to a limited degree, on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (she did once use and anti-tank missile on a vampire to great effect), but it probably WOULDN'T work on Mad Men.

They pretty much have to have a metric buttload of zombies right off the bat, seeing as they left it last week holed up behind a rapidly loosening screen door.
I'm guessing this one starts with a bang. I wonder if they'll end up leading some walkers back to the house after they get out of the school. And what about the group left back with the RV?
These questions and more will be ignored for bitchy office-girl jealousy...

Its the whole suspension of disbelief issue. You can suspend it for some major stuff and be willing to accept some really out there premise, but if the little details come along and they just scream "wrong!" it can be a big issue.
Like in Transformers 2, I can accept giant alien robots that can turn into earth based vehicles. But I'm really annoyed by them walking out of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. to an airplane graveyard and mountains in the distance.

I also liked "The Long Walk" - another short story from Different Seasons. Heard they were making a film of that too?
I think that's from a different book..
Stand By Me, Shawshank Redemption and Apt Pupil were all made into movies..
The last one was the winter's story.. The Breathing Method IIRC.
But yes, his short stories are usually much better than his horror..
And even his non-horror are better than his horror I thought..
I burned out on him from 'The Dark Tower' series.. Injecting himself into the story and then making it bend into the rest of his stories kinda ruined it for me.

One of the devices Stephen King beats the shit out of is the psychic wunderkind. It solves a lot of problems in moving your characters along when they can just know something. But that device gets old real quick after the 400th novel.

If you wonder where King got his idea for "The Stand", you should read "Earth Abides" by George Stewart, published in......1949. I think before King was born.
"Earth Abides" is a good story about, get this, a disease wiping out most of the human population on Earth, with only a few scattered survivors trying to rebuild society. This premise sounds mysteriously familiar, doesn't it?
A pretty good story with a good moral undertone. I would encourage my kids to read it, which I wouldn't do with most of King's stuff. My brother in law has read most of what King has written, so good for him and his fans. I just find it very unappealing.

I agree 101%. As Pournelle said afterward, it was meant to be an advocacy for SDI. Which is probably why no self-respecting left wing movie maker would touch it, unless they could dramatically twist the story and invert the moral message - like "Starship Troopers". What a depressing mess that was.

I've lost interest in The Walking Dead. Too much angst and not enough zombie blasting. Yes, I know that life after such an apocalyptic event would be "teh suck", but Jeebus, do I need to listen to these dimwits expound on their feelings?
I don't want to watch a soap opera with the occasional zombie cameo appearance. Additionally, I don't sympathize with any of the adult characters and I started rooting for the zombies by the end of the first season.

I am getting fucking tired of zombies.
As monsters, they're kind of boring. They shamble. They bite. They swarm. They're all rotting and icky. I know I've ragged on sparkly vampires, but at least a vampire can be a character. Zombies are automata. They could be replaced by a swarm of army ants, or a fire, and the story would be unchanged.
And on the metaphorical, symbolic level, they're awful. Zombies look just like people. Any story about zombies (except, importantly, the original slave fear of becoming one) is a story about killing people. Zombie movies are fantasies of slaughter. And it's no surprise that moviemakers use zombies to represent people they dislike. Who do they pick? Ordinary people. "Consumers."
Us.
Every single movie zombie I've ever seen has been white. They're a Hollywood liberal's nightmare of middle America, and so their heroes get to kill zombies by the hundreds.
So as of now, I'm officially sick of zombies. I want movie monsters who don't feed someone's fantasy of gunning me down.

Yes and no. It's more about someone finding out he's a hunter and then finding out there's this whole other world with it's own culture and rules out there. There's a great bit where the one werewolf tells Our Hero that he heard stories about the Grimms when little so Our Hero is his boogieman. It's got a bit of a lighter tone to it as well. Also they're doing the Sarah Connor thing where what gets the current hunter, who is his aunt, is cancer, not the Big Bad. I like that twist to it.

Earth Abides" is a good story about, get this, a disease wiping out most of the human population on Earth, with only a few scattered survivors trying to rebuild society. This premise sounds mysteriously familiar, doesn't it?
Yevgeny Zamyatin's We was written in 1921. It is told from the perspective of a diary that was written by the protagonist, D-503, who is a member of tyranous collectivist future society called Onestate. He is introduced to an impulsive woman who leads him to becoming involved in a rebellion against the State. The rebellion is quashed and the main character, as well as the woman, are forced to have an operation similar to lobotomy to make them compliant to the State, and find they no longer hold any empathy or affection for one another afterward, they seek only to obey.
One of the themes is that despite man's natural tendencies, nature if you will, toward rebelliousness, that Science would eventually progress to a point where it could be controlled for, and erradicated.
Ever read George Orwell's Ninteen Eighty-Four, published in 1949?
Premises get re-used all the time. A work can be derivative without being a rip-off. 1984 and We both have basically the exact same plot, but read them and you will find two very different books with very different points of focus.

Since this thread has gone mildly OT in discussing good "end-of-the-world" books, I'd like to recommend a book from the 1950's. The book is Alas, Babylon and it's a study of the inhabitants of a little town in Florida that survive a nuclear war.
The main protagonist is a former Army officer (a veteran of the Korean War) and he has to help his family and neighbors survive. The book is well done and the characters act as you expect people trying to survive. There are some bad guys, too.

Yes, I've got a copy of "We" around here somewhere. The book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip Dick is actually somewhat reminiscent of certain parts of that book, as the renegade "andies" were supposed to be bereft of human compasssion, but were also tools of the State. Philip Dick did that frequently, twisting around accepted premises (like "The Man in the High Castle", f'rinstance).
The differences all around are that Orwell and Dick could think and write, and King just copies and scribbles.

97I don't want to sound like I'm picking a fight, but . . .

From what's been said, AMC got greedy and slashed the effects budget and wanted more talky scenes and whatnot. Darabont got fired by AMC in a truly nasty fashion and he's mentioned that one of the eps that was turned in was so horribly directed that he was trying to edit into something approaching decent shape when he was let go. I was hoping that what he was saying was (justified) sour grapes but apparently not.

Note: I think it takes a bicycle generator 5 hours to charge one 12 volt battery
"But the protesters are coming up with a new solution – a stationary bike and generator connected to a battery.

Now, they just need to round up about a thousand "volunteers" to pedal a 15-min shift once every 24 hours to cover the 10 bike-generators. It's a collective responsibility. Just like the laundry.

Yes. One of the few books about survival where trying to survive isn't treated as a mortal sin and/or impossible.
That and Lucifer's Hammer.
This is an artifact of the Left's war on the West. During the Cold War, they kept hammering one theme over and over: that the only hope for mankind was for the US and its allies to unilaterally surrender to the Soviet Union. They demonized anybody who tried minimize the impact of a nuclear war by building a anti-missile system or a comprehensive Civil Defense system.
And really nothing has changed: replace nuclear war (winter) with global warming and you pretty much have same dynamic.

You mentioned "Star Trek" as an example. Allow me to add a few more:
Firefly (canceled because of lack of ratings; the show was put in the 8pm Friday slot; a ratings death trap)
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (canceled because then Comedy Central President Doug Herzog "didn't get the show". Sci-Fi picked it up later but the damage had been done)
Max Headroom (ABC Exec "didn't get it" ordered cancellation)
Wonderfalls (WB Exec felt it wouldn't appeal to audiences, despite the fact it had huge ratings and critical raves)

Me neither. I read that book because it was supposed to be great literature. I kept waiting for something to happen. I was still waiting at the end of the book. I determined that I would never read another Stephen King book again (but I did read one or two others). The one thing I can say about Stephen King is that he DOES NOT know how to end a book. All his books leave me wondering why I even bothered. I have not read one of his books in years and don't plan to.

The author of Alas Babylon later said of his novel, "I did not realize just how devastating a real Nuclear war would be, my novel did not cover all the aspects of the radiation threat nor nuclear winter." The author also wrote a book on how to survive a nuclear war that was not a work of fiction. It was titled How to survive a nuclear war and why. This book he also said was written before the full impact of such a war would have on people.
In both books Mr. Frank stated that at the time he had written an optomistic view of the situation.

Admittedly, the worst mistake any show producer can make is hiring Sarah Wayne Callies in a starring role. If she gets her way she will turn it into a real soap opera revolved chiefly around her character. But for now, the show is fine. Not perfect, but still damn good.
As for why Shane shot the guy and left him alive for the zombies to eat instead of killing him with a head shot, the simple answer to that is, zombies aren't interested in eating dead bodies, they only care about eating the living.
Not only was this the only way Shane could save himself, it was also the only way he could get the medicine to the kid.
And if you didn't like the Hanging Zombie segment, there's no pleasing you. Maybe you should find something more to your liking, like Desperate Housewives.
