The Walking Dead; Added: Hell on Wheels Pilot Immediately Following
— rdbrewer

Get your hate on.

You know what this show needs? A couple of blade-slinging zombie killers.

Zombies will even sit and watch them dance.

9 If they more or less follow the arc from the comic for what happens at Hershel's farm, this season should be really good.

If they don't, I have no idea. They've already deviated by killing Otis (the fat guy who wasn't fat in the comic) and Shane died long before this part of the story, too.

The good news is that Glenn is going to get some.

18 The problem with zombie films is that it'd be too easy for humans to wipe out the zombies. A heavily armed nation vs slow moving shamblers with a vulnerability to being shot in the head? No contest, zombies lose.

Some device needs to be worked out to explain how the zombie numbers got unmanageable in the first place, a mass plague is good (I am legend), or super fast infection (28 days later). But even so, the surviving humans would wipe out the zombies. we're not the dominant species because we're strong, but because we are smart and can use tools. Zombies can't, zombies lose.

If they can't think and are killed by gunfire, or even an arrow (walking dead) for Christ's sake, end of story.

You know the funny thing is that the scariest, most formidable and dangerous zombies were the ones in Return of the Living Dead, they were smart, deranged, and almost indestructible, they kept coming no mater how many pieces you cut them into.

24 First season was great, I was enthused. This season has been so slow. Ten times slower than season one, I swear. It drags and it sucks. It's been written so that things happen at the speed of a fricking soap opera. They easily could have explored all the relationship problems, and given us more action, in two less episodes. Instead they dwell and dwell and dwell on things that simply aren't worth THAT time spent. What a disappointment.

I guess the character that Colm Meaney portrays was a real guy.  Apparently a real asshole too, but a self-aware asshole.

Posted by: buzzion at November 06, 2011 04:53 PM (GULKT)

28 Nah, she doesn't die (in the comic) for a long time. Her death is very tragic. Oddly enough, in the comic, she is less of a raving bitch. In fact, she is very likeable.

Andrea is also not a basket-case and is someone you don't want to hit with a wet mackerel.

I know they don't want to do a page for page recreation of the comic but some of the acting choices and direction for these actors and their characters doesn't make many of them very endearing to an audience.

Not everybody, when faced with tragic circumstances, turns into a bitter fuckwad.

29 Tommy #20: Starring SCOAMF as the Undead Special guest star on the left. Script: SCOAMPF lurches out of the darkness and latches onto Rick. They struggle. SCOAMPF makes guttural and snarling noises. They keep struggling, finally Rick breaks away and shoots SCOAMPF. Zombie kill. Rick: "My God! He was trying to talk, I think to tell me something. But there wasn't a teleprompter, so he made no sense." Dale: "Did he injure you? Are you bitten!?!?" Rick, shaking his head. "No, no. But I should have been. He had a clear shot at my neck the whole time! But for some reason, he just kept pawing for my wallet instead."

35 My hope is the show lasts because I love zombies and the comic series. It may also spawn other horror shows for basic cable.

There's a ton of great material in the comics but they're not utilizing much of it at all. What they have used, thus far, has been (with some exceptions) badly employed. As I said, Hershel's farm is a treasure trove of awesomeness in the comic and should be the same for the show if they don't step on their dicks.

Also, when/if they get to the prison, and meet the 'Governor' and other assorted baddies maybe the pace of the show will pick up.

@32, the St. Louis occupiers (who just let it slip that they have a grand total of 15 campers) are having their GA meeting now. http://tinyurl.com/63nsuhc
It's the same lame student council stuff most of these groups do, although they have the specter of the Mayor shutting them down pretty soon.

And, to show the rampant anti-Semitism, they were going over the results from last night's GA, and noted that there was consensus to pursue "divestment" with the Mayor, although the hipster in charge didn't actually know what that meant (of course, it means business divestment from Israel).

53 Eh, I've got a bunch of them qued up on the DVR but I really have only watched the first two episodes of this season and maybe 35 min.? of the 3rd episode before I dozed off. I guess that the only way for me to not WANT for all (at one point or another) of the former residents of Camp Dinnerbell to die a horrific death at the hands of Zombies is to be too tired to keep my eyes open. Otherwise, I just start getting mad at the characters, the writers, and the actors, and at show in general... One of the few shows I've watched where I'm all like, "Spoilers?!.... Whatever, you'll probably save me some time and grief. Go for it! ***Note to SHOW, it really makes it difficult to keep up with a series if you INSIST apon making the viewers start to really hate every live human being in the story. I mean, it's not like you have the option of turning the ZOMBIES into anti-heros or something*** Either through making them say or do unutterably stupid things over and over and over again in order to further the plot or just crudely written, endless seeming "charachter development" scenes where even THIS non-fan of horror / gore movies is screaming at the TV for more BRAINZZS! I really don't care for the "ick factor" in movies or TV at all but I'll have to admit, Walking Dead has even had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the next Zombie attack. Not really on the edge of my seat due to scary suspense, mind you. More like, "If these retards on screen keep effing ineffable stupidity for *another* 3 minutes, I may just jump out of my skin! Where are the ZOMBIES? Why won't this STOP?!".

Yeah. Unless someone had a gun to my head, I would never willingly surrender my firearms - for real or if I was writing a story. That is just more pandering to the liberal left that makes up the staff and regular audience of AMC.

Not tense enough.  The old man must have some type of medical condition as well, like epilepsey, asthma, dia-beet-us, heart defect, mini-strokes, that can be triggered under high stress conditions (like a zombie attack) and totally disable him, making getting to the locked up guns even more problematic.

Disagree. The prison and the confrontation with the Governor was one of the best arcs in the comic. If they get that on screen and manage to do a halfway decent job, it should be pretty awesome.

162 I guess that the appeal of Zombie Apocolypse or other "Diruptive End to Civilization as We Know It" stories rides on satifactorily posing the question, "How Would WE Deal With It (or not)?". I guess I have my answer from the writer folks at AMC. Not! Last fucking group of people I would want to share a life-raft with on the Pacific for months or so are the writers for TWD. Yeah, it IS more interesting when you take individual frailties and human dynamics into account but I, like a commenter above, find it hard to believe that EVERYONE "when confronted by tragic circumstances turns into a bitter-fuckwad". Yeah, but history teaches us that some do and some don't and some become transcendantly heroic, and sitting in your Walter Mitty armchair you can't really KNOW which one you might be... I imagine that, under apocalyptic circumstances, I *could* prove to be a worse liability to my group than any combination of vanity, jack-assery, insecurity, fucking basic stupidity, being out of shape, daddy issues, cupidity, false modesty, and youthful cluelessness of 4-5 of the main charachters in the Walking Dead combined. I like to flatter myself that I might could overcome *some* of those deficits given time and...A SENSE OF URGENCY!!! I dunno, though. Perhaps the charachters (as written) in AMC's the Walking Dead & the Malthusians and Erlichmens of the world are correct. We all deserve to die! Nahhh, It's just TV! SRSLY? Sequestering weapons useful in basic survival?

Excellent points. If I found myself to be a liability to a group, I'd GTFO before THEY realized it and solved the problem permanently. Most people like to think they'd do well in a terrible crisis and while many might do so there are just as many (if not more) who would turn into monsters. Or, even worse, a proverbial albatross around the neck.

That was something they touched on in the comic. The nice folks you see at your grocery store, your next door neighbor who BBQ's with you might end raping your daughter while making you watch if society collapsed. In other words, who you think you are and who you think other people are don't count for much. Holding onto those illusions is what I think could be a very lethal mistake when/if SHTF.

171 Disagree. The prison and the confrontation with the Governor was one of the best arcs in the comic. If they get that on screen and manage to do a halfway decent job, it should be pretty awesome.

To me the comic started a steep descent after the first six-issue arc.  It wasn't just that they switched artists at that time, going from the amazing linework of Tony Moore to the unreadable smudgy scribblings of Charlie Adlard (it says something to me that, in an industry in which artist turnover is a constant, Adlard apparently was never in any kind of demand for other work that ever required he leave Walking Dead for even a single issue) -- though that was bad enough for me; I never liked or got used to Adlard's work, no matter how long he stayed on the book.

No, the main problem was that when sales figures for those first six issues went into the stratosphere and the title's long-term survival was assured, Kirkman stopped trying to pack lots of story into the book the way he had for those first six phenomenal issues and instead opted for a slooooooow, languid, excruciating pace.  In fact, the show is reminding me very much of what it was like to read later issues of the book, in which the characters got bogged down in a single location forever and wallowed in endless anguish over their feelings, and the zombies only made cameo appearances.  And that was the prison storyline to a T.  They spent dozens of issues in that stupid place until I finally decided to stop wasting my time, because the story literally was not going anywhere.  Kirkman thought he was doing deep character stuff but he doesn't have the chops for that.  (For a guy who can't write good dialogue, Walking Dead was by far the talkiest comic I've ever read.)

I got through the Governor storyline but even that wasn't enough to save the book for me.  I stopped reading it somewhere in the #50s.

Posted by: Herman Cain at November 06, 2011 07:10 PM (ezL2d)

186 One thing I don't get...where did all the zombies come from?  Given the zombie preference for flesh, why were all these people not eaten?  I get that some may get bitten, escape the zombies and go off alone to die and re-animate.  But it would seem the far and away most common outcome of death by zombie horde is small morsels distributed among multitudinous zombie rot guts, especially in a place like Atlanta with that kind of population density.  I think in the whole series there was only one (half) zombie who had obviously been used as a lunch buffet for the dead.

Apparently the walking dead are really driven to consume very tiny nibbles of live human flesh.  Although based on the make up department, it does seem that zombies spend an inordinate amount of time eating peoples' lips.

(I watched the first season and the first episode of the second, then gave up...let me know if it is good enough to give it another chance)

I'm going out into those woods to find my daughter, and I'm shooting every zombie that I can find, so they don't get her. So show me how to shoot NOW. Then I'm out there for my little girl." Actually, every member of my team would be trained to be their best shot before the first day they join the team is finished. But these people, they give up their guns. They sequester their guns. Wouldn't want anyone accidentally getting shot, you know. Sheeesh.
