The Walking Dead season two premiers tonight. [dri]
— Open Blogger

Season two of the best zombie series on TV "The Walking Dead" premiers tonight at 9pm EST 8 Central on AMC. The first season featured people acting stupid when faced with a ravenous zombie threat: "Hey let's set up an undefended camp next to this big bonfire that can be seen for miles." and "Don't use your guns because it attracts the zombies, no not the zombies attacking us right now but other zombies". In any event it should be an entertaining bloodfest.

3 Well, the story can always improve for the televised version this season, right? Here's hoping they at least get in sight of the prison by the end of season 2, or at least resolve a certain prominent love triangle.

After one posted a "I love my country, it's my government I'm scared of" I responded that the John Birch Society says, "You kid get of our lawn!"
I think it has also been noticed that Ron Paul! has supporters at these rallies. Let the crazy right and the crazy left gather in one place--so we can see them all for what they are--totalitarians.

42

They are replaying them on TV now.

I forgot how bad some of the writing was.  The first two episodes were fantastic, but then they went downhill from there.

I think the show suffered because AMC hadn't commited to it long term. They were just puting 6 episodes out to test it. As a result the writing was poor and the storyline wasn't thought out.

They never covered what happened to Merryl's brother or explained that helicopter.

I hope since the series was renewed that they put a little more time and effort into the show.

56

Also, something that bothered me about the show is that it's kinda like a video game in that they seem completely unable to pick shit up.

For example, there are probably 1 million RV's in the US. They can't abandon the one they have for a functioning one? You can't find a replacement hose for it when the highways are filled with cars?

There are 200 million guns in America and in season 1 you were  fighting over a bag full of shotguns with the "vatos"? You know what I call a bag full of shotguns, part of my gun collection.  So apparently they can't find any guns in the entire city of Atlanta or surrounding areas? Also, those ma-deuces that were lying around everywhere in Atlanta, you didn't think to pick one up? Instead you're going to go with pistols and cross bows?

It's the impracticality of it that pissed me off so much last year. You have a country that has enough resources for 300 million people and they can't find the most basic things?

60 Well that should have been in the show around all the army checkpoints was piles and piles of bodies from being mowed down by MG positions until the ammo ran out. Other than the CDC blockade, you didn't see it that way. Just abandoned positions and vehicles. The logical reason for not having them scavenge weapons and ammo should be that all the army equipment should be shown to be out of ammo and barrels melted from overheating.

You don't throw something like that into it and not go back to it.  Also, it contradicts what the guy at the CDC said. He was convinced everyone was dead, but apparently a few days prior there were enough people to fuel, maintain and fly a helicopter.

Was the helicopter in the comics?  Did they come back to it ever?   Sooner than they have in the show?  I know they're using the comics more as a guideline than a line for line storyboard for the show, but they are of course going to include many visuals from the comic.

Critics have openly asked why a black, or at least an American, artist was not chosen and even remarked that Dr King appears slightly Asian in Mr Lei's rendering.

Mr Lei, who has in the past carved two statues of Mao Tse-tung, one of which stands in the former garden of Mao Anqing, the Chinese leader's son, carried out almost all of the work in Changsha.

Posted by: CoolCzech at October 16, 2011 04:50 PM (niZvt)

160 #150, yeah that's always an issue with rotting zombies. After a week or two most of their eyes wouldn't work anymore, nor their sense of smell or hearing. Rigor and whatnot would also destroy their ability to move more or less. Extreme heat or cold would render most zombies of that type inert rather quickly. In the TV show it's shown to be as a meningitis type viral infection that once a person dies (everyone is infected in the comics and I assume that's what the CDC scientist whispered to the Sheriff) it reactivates the nervous system and the core parts of the brain, but everything else is pretty much dead tissue rotting away.

Rapid zombies I could see though. Bad strain of meningitis or rabies could make the world really dangerous a la 28 days later.

The clothing thing was stupid.  The only way I can make it work is if this was the first time that the group has gone into the city since the outbreak, and up until know they've avoided population centers.

Of course, it begs the question why they haven't made a run to the local Home Depot or Wal-Mart.  Even a small town will have something, not to mention a local auto shop or parts store.  And the number of zombies around should not be enough to overwhelm a group that is prepared.

201 I don't expect shows with no plot holes, just at least minimize them.I expect to need some suspension of disbelief.

The key to suspension of disbelief is to get the small things correct.  It's easy to accept the premise of an alien invasion or a zombie apocalypse as long as people act as you would expect them to in those situations.  Contrary, a romantic comedy can get away with having people do stupid or bizarre things because it's set in a world that is easily believable.  You have to give people a reference point to work from.  This, of course, is why I hate the way the military is portrayed in film.

226 Even if the whole zombie apocalypse caught the Army by surprise, how long would it take an engineering company to make a something like a Roman camp capable of holding a battalion?  A ditch, a berm, tanglefoot, fighting positions?  Two hours?  Maybe three?  And the Army has tanks, and the Walking Dead seem sorely lacking in Anti-Tank Artillery.

So here is the plan.  Dig a camp.  Create killing zones. Have a company tanks run around buttoned up and squish the zombies as long as the diesel holds out as the zombies run toward the 'noise'.  Not even a .50 cal will go through Abrams armor, so have the camps put out suppressing fire around the tanks.  Next day, move to a different part of base and repeat.

The Walking Dead suffers from the same problem as Falling Skies; all the survivors are really, really stupid.

The first clue came in the first episode when the sheriff (really?) dumps the heavy SUV in favor of a horse to ride into a large city full of zombies. Because, you know, riding a slower live spooked animal with no metal protection is always a good move.

It pretty much went down hill from there.

No.  Trust me.  When you button up a tank, you may have less visibility than you would like, but nothing short of explosives opens up a tank from the outside.  And 68 tons makes a squish out of people it runs over without slowing.  And the support weapons, 5.56 etc, will not go through the armor.  Plus the loader's and TC's weapon can be fired from inside the tank.  Just roll forward at 5 mph and they run at you and you fertilize the grass.

But like someone said, the apocalypse seems to have killed the ones with functioning brains first.

In World War Z, the zacks don't swim, but they walk along the bottom of the ocean once their bodies fill with water. An island is still probably one of the most defensible positions, but how many Caribbean islands can sustain their current populations without importing food? Imagine trying to sustain an influx of refugees.

Yes, but aquaculture will take time to setup.  I've read that the harvesting of spiny lobsters is restricted due to overfishing.  I think they may have other overfishing problems there as well.

Now with a much reduced worldwide population, the fish stocks would rebound probably fairly quickly.

447 455 The novel that King says, or used to claim anyway, that he couldn't remember writing (because he got high) was Cujo.

Which is odd (to me) because that was the most terrifying book he wrote IMO. I literally started reading at 7 PM and finished at 7 AM.

452 The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was the last good book I read from him. The last Dark Tower books (post-Wizard) were a memory-raping on a Lucas scale. Also, I made it a general rule that any pro-Kerry / anti-Bush artists of the mid-2000s were proven enemies, so I boycotted a number of people then. (Future historians will look back dumbstruck at just how hateful the antiBush crowd were. Larry Gonick's Cartoon History, for instance... wow.)

But ultimately I just grew out of him.

470 Who else noticed the sign in front saying "Southern Baptist church". and then they go in and spend the next 15 minutes talking to the Roman Catholic crucifix that some idiotic director stuck in front? Pretty damned obvious that whoever made that don't know diddly squat about southern baptists, or roman catholics for that matter. They also didn't bother to ask. it made that whole church scene laughably idiotic for me. Add that to the "hey lets shoot the little kid for no reason!" ending and at least now I know I won't be wasting any time watching this piece of shit show again.

471 You know what else they don't have (besides good looking people, especially a couple of hottie chix)?  A vulnerable character.   Someone you want to protect, take care of.  Someone sympathetic, like Jamie Lee Curtis' character in Halloween

The vulnerable character could be a hottie, so that'd take care of two.

Instead, they have all these ass nasty, rancid women who look like they smell like cigarette butts and feet.

474 You know what other show has this problem, not enough sympathetic characters?  Justified.  They have a couple, Searcy and Oliphant, but that's about it.  The rest are 2-D caricatures of them trashy country folk.

Think of Twin Peaks.  There were plenty of hicks in that show, but every one had something quirky and appealing about them.  Too many stereotypical, rancid backwater hicks becomes... burdensome, unpleasant.  And worse, uninteresting.

Posted by: rdbrewer at October 16, 2011 09:03 PM (zkw9o)

476 A couple of the obvious flaws in The Langoliers:  When they're getting on the airplane to escape the langoliers, there is no one to push back the stairs.

Later, when they are "re-appearing" in the present after flying back through the time rift, they make a point of stepping back against a wall in the terminal so that they don't bump into anyone as they materialize.  They stand away from foot traffic areas.  Hopefully the huge jet plane they arrived in was able to stand against a wall too as it reappeared on the tarmac.

There were several others, but these glaring ones are all I can remember right now.

482 In Romero's, "Day of the Dead" (1985) there's a scene with Dr. Logan where he is dictating into a micro-cassette recorder that initial findings (I presume this means before everything went totally FUBAR some research had been done) that some zombies could be mobile 7-12 years and upon early revival (reanimating before too much decomposition had taken place) 15-20 years.

From that I assume that the virus/plague slows down the decomposition process to a crawl but the elements don't play favorites. So, I would think the 7-12 year 'longevity' would be more 'realistic'. As for the cause of the 'plague' Romero (at least) made it ambiguous; it could be whatever you wanted it to be: a virus, a bacteria, radiation (as suggested in Night of the Living Dead '6 or the Wrath of God.

As for finding ammo lying around, I would  probably pick up an M16 or Baretta from a dead soldier and use it until the ammo runs out. The problem is what if you're off the beaten trail? Finding rounds for a Baretta would be easier than finding ammo for an M16. Plus hauling an arsenal on your back is a pain in the ass even if you're used to doing so. I'd probably stick with something I would be likely be able to find rounds for like a 12ga shotgun or a .38. Those types of rounds are fairly ubiquitous.

Wrath of God is the only one that makes any sense.  No virus, bacteria or radiation could explain walking with no heart beat, breathing, blood pressure, etc.

Unless you do the Rage virus scenario, where the zombies aren't really zombies, just supper pissed off / aggressive but mindless plauge victims who are alive by every medical standard.

486 The only zombies I could ever buy were the Romero zombies. Walking Dead is pushing it but they're tolerable. IF something is dead and reanimated, I would imagine if they ran their ankles would snap.

Then again, if we allow that the dead can come back to life and suffer all manner of injury and still be mobile, I guess them running is not too far fetched.

I've always joked that all you'd need to survive in Romero's zombies 'universe' is a baseball bat & not getting surrounded. As in every zombie creators 'universe' it isn't so much the 'dead fucks' you have to worry about - it's the living ones.

At least with the dead ones, you  know where they stand.

Posted by: Glenn Frey at October 16, 2011 11:20 PM (2DuGp)

487 The zombies in Walking Dead don't run,do they?  Did you mean Zach Snyders "Day of the Dead"?

Posted by: ed at October 16, 2011 11:23 PM (Y2WVW)

488 And Dri, they had campfires, not bonfires. Shane kept telling them to keep the fires low so as not to draw attention. Towards the end, they build up rock walls around them so they could have higher flames/more heat and not flash as much light.

Whether the zombies that happened upon the camp were drawn by the smoke, fire or Glenn's stolen sports car alarm is uncertain.

Posted by: Glenn Frey at October 16, 2011 11:24 PM (2DuGp)

489 Well, they're a little more 'athletic' than Romero zombies but then what zombies aren't compared to his.

Posted by: Glenn Frey at October 16, 2011 11:26 PM (2DuGp)

490

Heh.  I know a lot of zombie purists were pissed about Zack's running zombies, but to me, it never seemed like a big deal.

First, if the dead can walk, running, although slightly implausible, doesn't seem impossible.

Second, his zombies definitely had that evil, mindless, remorseless hunger for the living that made the shambling dead so scarry too.

It's not the speed, or lack there of that makes zombies scary.

It's their inhuman, mindless remorselessness in pursuit of the living.

Posted by: ed at October 16, 2011 11:31 PM (Y2WVW)

491 Agreed. That's the beauty of it Romero's stuff is that it becomes less important as to why it's happening. It just is happening and the survivors, wherever they may be, just have to deal with the world of shit they're in.

Something I dislike with TWD is that you have to be bitten in order to die and become a zombie. In Romero's, if you die for any reason, you come back. To me that is more frightening a prospect, somehow.

Posted by: Glenn Frey at October 16, 2011 11:37 PM (2DuGp)

492 Well, said, Ed. Hey, that rhymed.

That's what vampires used to be until they became sparkling Fire Island enthusiasts. This is one of the reasons I adore the, "30 Days of Night" graphic novels and films.

Vampires aren't suave, debonaire or effeminate Sissy Marys but blood thirsty monsters that would rip you apart and smile while doing it.

Yeah...that was spooky as hell.

Because it says that no matter what, no matter how you struggle and fight against it...you come back as what you fear.

Yeah, you can suicide via a head shot, or have your friends take care of you after you die... but that is just accelerating the human death, zombie rebirth, final death cycle.

Posted by: ed at October 16, 2011 11:52 PM (Y2WVW)

494 I always wondered about the metaphysical angle of it. Would suicide under those circumstances still be considered a mortal sin?

Also, even if you found a group of survivors, how could you ever be safe? People die in their sleep all the time. What if you went to sleep with your wife/girlfriend and they die, come back and you wake up with them over you ready to take a bite?

509 What I think would be the best way to survive this type of Zombie attack. 1. .45acp- a very destructive round that is fairly common. Everyone in the group should try to carry the weapons chambered the same. You can have .45 pistols and carbines that explode zombie heads, better than a 9mm's through and through. Learn how to reload and collect your brass.. 2. Small displacement dual sport motorcycles. Honda makes em, they are quiet, fast, get great mileage and don't break down. 3. Cell towers and bolt cutters, Ever cell tower has a fenced compound at its base that can be accessed with a set of bolt cutters, roll your bike in and put your own lock on there for the night. Towers are everyplace and you can find them from miles away.
