— Ace How bad? The Washington Post is so hacktastic here the NYT is relatively fair and balanced by comparison.
Three excerpts on donations from lobbyists, first from the Washington Examiner, then from the NYT, then the Washington Post.
Examiner:
President Obama doesn't take campaign contributions from lobbyists -- unless you count the owners and CEOs of lobbying firms, corporate vice presidents for government relations, or managing directors for public policy.
Well there's some news. Now the NYT:
Despite a pledge not to take money from lobbyists, President Obama has relied on prominent supporters who are active in the lobbying industry to raise millions of dollars for his re-election bid.
Well! Even the NYT confesses this is newsworthy!
Now, the Washington Post. Enjoy:
K Street is playing an increasingly central role in the 2012 presidential race, as hundreds of lobbyists representing some of the worldÂ’s largest corporations and trade groups pour money into Republican coffers.
Oh, they do get around, eventually, to quickly mentioning a couple of lobbyist donors to Obama. But they only offer the Administration's spin.
...LaBolt said Johnson [the lobbyist recently hired by the White House] will refrain from any issues involving past clients. 'For years the President has fought to ensure that Washington lobbyists donÂ’t have undue influence over the policymaking process,' LaBolt said in a statement. 'ThereÂ’s no doubt that special interests are pouring contributions into the coffers of our potential opponents and their allies because they believe that large corporations and millionaires and billionaires should get tax cuts instead of the middle class and that Wall Street should be able write its own rules again.'"
So, um, does Obama take money from lobbyists?
According to the Washington Post: No, and if he did, it was just a slip-up.
...As he did in 2008, Obama has made a point of refusing to accept donations from lobbyists or corporate PACs, and his campaign has repeatedly portrayed Republicans as beholden to Wall Street and other well-funded interests. But Obama faced his own criticism this week after hiring a former corporate lobbyist as a senior campaign adviser.”
...
“Obama’s practice of refusing lobbyist contributions fits into a broader goal of seeking to curb the influence of special interests in Washington. After The Post inquired this week about two lobbyists who gave to the campaign, spokesman Ben LaBolt said the contributions would be returned.”
By the way, you know what would be sweet? If Obama stopped the practice of disabling his Address Verification System in his credit card donation operation to block illegal overseas donations.

41the FEC is a bipartisan commission and it takes a majority vote to decide to "audit" a campaigns donations. In 2008 the Dems had a majority. I don't know if the 2010 election changed this.
--
If memory serves -- on that point, the dems (who had the majority) had short staffed the FEC for a large part of the election cycle by delaying the appointment of enough of the commission to constitute a quorum. Kind of like, in laymans terms - there purposely wasnt enough of them to ....ahh screw it, I'll google it:
Barack Obama is promising to end partisanship in Washington, and here's a place to start: He could stop playing politics with the Federal Election Commission in a way that could hamper John McCain's campaign against, well, Mr. Obama.
The Illinois Senator is blocking confirmation of one of President Bush's appointees to the FEC, which administers election laws. This has left the agency two commissioners short of the quorum it needs to make decisions -- with the potential for direct harm to Mr. McCain's campaign. As we've been writing, the Arizona Senator took out a controversial $1 million loan that FEC Chairman David Mason has said might lock him into the public finance system for the primary season. Mr. McCain doesn't want to do that because he'd have to abide by spending limits that would reduce his campaigning this spring and summer. Mr. Mason says the FEC needs to rule on the matter, but without a quorum Mr. McCain is left hanging.

Today, I walked with the Occupy Wall Street brigade during their march, which was arranged in order “to barrage bank CEO’s with 6,000 angry letters from the 99 percent.” (Clearly the 99 percent aren’t big letter writers.) We took a route straight up Sixth Avenue from 41st, up to Citigroup’s headquarters, where the protesters presented a petition. In response, Citigroup sent down a representative who graciously took a handful of the petitions, but declined to take all of the multiple boxes that OWS had brought with them. This heinous “reluctance to listen” — all part of the plan of course — triggered part two of the festivities, in which the petitions were turned into paper airplanes and thrown at the building.

Liberal stupidity was mildly amusing once, back in the 1990's or so but now we seem to be getting pushed closer and closer to a precipice, not so much. The stupid coming out of Beckel is a huge part of what caused the current problems. I don't think there's many conservatives outside of Gutfeld that could talk to Beckel for long without the desire to strangle him.
