The Year In Newsweekly Covers
— Ace

Before the covers (which you've probably guessed at), Businessinsider discusses a new term, "Screwflation," which the author defines as inflation plus getting hit by other rising costs.

The actual coining of this term is by Doug Kass at Barron's, but it's behind a subscription wall.

April 19, 2010 cover date. Newsweek, the magazine sold for one rectangular U.S. dollar, with many questioning if it was worth so much:

Note the second headline at the top of the cover: "Hate on the Right." Pretty much a story they can, and do, write every other month. And this was nearly a year before Gabrielle Giffords was shot by a left-wing lunatic and 9/11 Truther. This was back, if I'm recalling right and I'm probably not, when the media became outraged over an attempt by citizens to express their opposition to ObamaCare to the politicians who allegedly represent them.

June 20, 2011 cover date. Time, which I'm sure not saying isn't biased or Obama-loving, but which at least recognizes the outer limits of plausible spin:

The Baltimore Sun (from whom that first cover is linked) expressed a little skepticism about Newsweek's Whoo-Hoo cover.

Time Magazine doesn't seem proud of its cover story. I searched for it online, paging through Time's online splash page, its US splash, its politics splash, its business splash. Couldn't find it. I suppose it might be linked down the page.

I eventually found it by a google search, going through someone else's website to get it.

I know it's a few days old now but sort of think this should still be prominent.

7 Never one to turn down a tasty Weiner, seen this? "Jun 12, 7:00 AM Rep. Weiner Used Congressional Gym As Backdrop Rep. Anthony Weiner took numerous photos of himself -- clothed and partially nude -- at the House Members Gym and sent them to at least one woman ... raising questions about whether he used Congressional resources in his online exploits. TMZÂ… More >" Go to Weasel Zippers or TMZ. Really sad pics of a really vile little man. Not so much graphic as pathetic.

8 I think I just saw me some "Screwflation"--TMZ is posting more Weiner pics, and yeah, they were taken at the Congressional Gym.

10 Let me guess, the "Hate on the Right" story was all about those dirty teabaggers who accused Obama of being a Keynesian and wouldn't give him credit for the best economy evar!

Posted by: Andy at June 12, 2011 06:35 AM (veZ9n)

11 That congressional gym is a busy place.  Isn't that also where Rahm would strong arm people in the showers?

12 Time: Yet surveys show 50% of Americans think that not raising the debt ceiling is a good idea — that you can somehow starve your way to economic growth. Exactly. Government growth is what we need. That's how you measure success. Ahh, if only we had a bigger government.. That Time article is infuriating. Obama inherited this, the results were baked into the economy, and now people want to cut taxes on the wealthy. Is there no end to the cynicism of Republicans? I withdraw my bid of two dollars for Time.

13 I was at the doctor's office the other day and found this Newsweek story gleefully mocking the fact that white middle aged males are finally getting hurt by a bad economy.

You'd never read a story written in this tone if it were about black men or single moms.

But upper middle class white males? Oh, yeah. It's about time those guys got what was coming to them.

June 20, 2010 2011 cover date.

Heh!  I went to my hubby's nephew's graduation last night.  The speaker who was presenting the citizenship award, was himself an alumnus of the same high school (class of 80).  He was going through a list of what was going on then juxtaposed with what is going on now.  One of the lines that made me lol:  "Back then, we had Ronald Reagan.  Today we have Barack Obama (just a few scattered cheers).  Back then we had Libya and Moamar Ghadaffi.  Today, we have Libya and Moamar Ghadaffi."  I loved that he said that because no one ever points out the fact that there is a third (and completely unnecessary war going on now, compliments of B.O.)

I like that most of Newsweeks' comments sections are filled with either-

raving lefty moonbats

or

apparently...a hangout for the Stormfront crowd.

It is like the worst of both worlds decided to make a home in the carcass of Newsweek.

19 Yes, only go a paragraph or two into the Time piece and the toadies are already letting Barry off the hook. Time... It's not just a magazine, it's a dust cover for coffee tables in dentist offices!

24 I know sometimes people say no use in pointing out media bias - but the press was relentless in saying that the Bush economy was the worst since the Depression - when it wasn't. Now it's all unexpectedly not so good - because they expected miracles from Chocolate Jesus.

25 I have subscribed to everyone of those weekly news magazines. I would get one for a year and drop it. Get another one and then drop it.

I hunted for one that was at least "neutral". There aren't any. They are all in the Democrats pockets and liberal as hell.

26 Let's be clear: the slow growth the U.S. is experiencing is not an Obama-specific problem. Many of the ingredients in it were already baked into the economy and were simply laid bare by the financial crisis.
You know it's true because they said "let's be clear."

Such an authoritative declaration! And just like Obama does it!

And  you know, they make a compelling case assertion.

Because the combination of Obama's off shore drilling ban, business hostile EPA, and Bernanke's dollar devaluation have nothing to do with skyrocketing energy costs, right?

And increased energy costs never kill economies, do they?

Businesses just thrive in environments where the cost of doing business is sky-high.

You know what else businesses love? New burdensome health care regulations. They also love increased paperwork brought about by byzantine federal rules and regulations

Also, business love when an administration takes a big shit on hundreds of years of established contract law in order to steal from companies and pay off union supporters.

Makes 'em really want to stick their necks out.

But none of this is Obama's fault. Right?

Right?

27 Remember Time chose both Stalin and Hitler as separate men of the year in 1938 and 1942... But forced Reagan to share man of the year for 1983 with... Yuri Andropov.

36 Or as Goolsbee put it, it's time for the private sector to "stand up and lead the recovery."

OK, let's impeach Obama, arrest half of Congress, put Bernanke and Greenspan in leg irons and cut spending by 50% and business taxes by 70%.

How about that, dickhead?

39 bastards.  dirty, whore, bastards.

If only. There may be $2 trillion sitting on the balance sheets of American corporations globally, but firms show no signs of wanting to spend it in order to hire workers at home, however much Washington might hope they will. Meanwhile, the average American is feeling poorer by the week.

How the hell can they be taken seriously? This is grotesque. Why not just make a Disnefied cartoon about the evil rich cats oppressing the helpless little poor mice?

Oh, because that would be more readily recognized as propaganda.

Bastards. (that's from the Time article, BTW)
