There's Another Debate Tonight? / Open Thread
— andy

#OccupyEndZone will be on my TV tonight, but if you're interested, there's a foreign policy debate on CBS tonight at 8pm Eastern.

Also, word on Twitter is that the Denver police are cracking down on Occupy Denver, so Ace, Gabe and the rest of the BlogCon attendees should have some good stories.

Helpful suggestion for Denver P.D. below the fold.

4 Remember the 08 debates, when Hillary went into knots over drivers licenses for illegals.?  The LSM didn't say she was:

-a fool
-a flip flopper
-to dumb to be president
-lying/pandering

10 Sure things about tonights Foreign Policy debate: 1) they will say to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem except for Huntsman Paul. Cain will ask where is Jerusalem. 2) Cain will mention the word Aegis 3) No one will mention that Radical Islam is out enemy but Cain will pledge not to nominate a Muslim to the Joint Chiefs 4) When asked if Israel should attack Iran, they will put their hands over thier eyes, ears, and mouth except for Huntsman and Paul. Cain will say he didn't realize Israel had Aegis capable planes?

Decent probably wont save him.

Probably not.

But doing great would.

He is so articulate, earnest and likable in his interviews.

I just with that would come through tonight.

What he has done in Texas he could do for the whole US.

That is why I would like for him to win the nomination.

17 Another "debate" for me to miss!

Why we allow Republican debates to be run by hard-core leftards is beyond me. The friggin' Democrats aren't that dumb.

We all know what the reactions will be: Even if Mutt Romney whips out his schlong and pees on the other candidates, he'll be "smooth," "polished," "presidential" and "inevitable."

Rick Perry will be a fumbling loser, no matter what he does. Ditto for Herman Cain.

Ron Paul will be crazy. So will Bachman, but she has nicer boobehs than Ron Paul.

Rick Sanitarium and Stanley Huntsman will be losers.

That is all.

Except to say that Osama Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

It has to be hard for Perry to realize that regardless of his record, because he isn't the king of the 30 second soundbite answers he will probably not get the nomination.

Perry will pick a Saturday Night when no one is watching to have a gaffe free debate.

Newt's Callista mentions will be under 2.

Cain, will get me really fud up in the 999 drinking game.

Santorum will look more douchtastic than usual.  I mean it's Saturday night for chrissakes.  I'll feel weird seeing him tonight.

Bachmann will make me want to throw my support to Marge Simpson.

Huntsman's daughters are hot

Mittens will make Jeff B's gina tingle.

Buddy Roemer will make my gina tingle.

Jeebus Crisco, I forgot to put The Newt in my in-depth, penetrating analysis.

All I can say is: the commenters at Tepid Air are fapping like mad over Newt the wonder Dog. He's the perfect Ed "Poppin' Fresh" Morrissey candidate (now that T-Paw bailed). I'd take him over Romney, but prefer him as he is, which is a sender of give-me-money emails and a guy who knows where (at Sean Hannity's show, of course) to get his knob polished.

He's a good speaker as are most Senators and Congresspeople. It's what they do. They talk. Governors do.

Posted by: grognard at November 12, 2011 04:49 PM (xMJlE)

445 The problem with Newt is that he has a track record and he just didn't perform when he had the chance.

He got hardly any of the Contract with America into law.  He completely undermined the fight against Clinton and put our entire movement in jeopardy by: 1.) having an affair and making himself vulnerable to intimidation by the Dems (and it's always been a hunch of mine this actually happened) and 2.) breaking in the budget fight just when polls were starting to go our way, acceding to increased spending, and robbing the Republicans of any claim to be the party of small government.

It's like an dysfunctional relationship where you know your ex-boyfriend is going to cheat on you; he has always cheated on you in the past; but he keeps talking a good game, so you keep going back.

That said... everybody else sucks so bad, I'm actively considering it.

505 The moderators are horrendous.  They have obvious contempt for Republicans as shown in the "rule of law" moment with Newt.  But they showed their stupidity by directing that comment at newt.  It's so transparent and too funny.  Every single time anyone on the stage criticizes the president and the current administration, the moderators interrupt them and yell "time"!  What are they afraid they are going to hear?

637 "When an athlete chokes during a big game, thereÂ’s usually a single moment of distraction that flips a mental switch, reducing even the most talented All Star to the skill level of a Little League benchwarmer. After analyzing the now-viral debate clip, Miller says that switch was apparently flipped for Perry the moment he looked at Ron Paul, who was standing next to him on stage.

“His focus was disrupted and some emotion was conjured up, and that emotion took the place of whatever he was trying to process in his brain,” Miller said. “Maybe it was a look on Ron Paul’s face, or maybe it was just the sight of Ron Paul in general. I don’t know.”"

LOLOL the sight of Ron Paul certainly flips a mental switch in my brain.  The switch labeled DO NOT WANT.

If any of them gave a strategy you'd be complaining that they were stupid to give too much info to the dems.

This was like walking a tight rope.  And, boo on CBS and the National Journal.....where were the female moderators and could they have pulled Governor Haley in to ask a question too????   What they did was highlight that Michelle Bachman is the only female candidate.

763 I have a question for the folks here...
We all assume Newt would kick Obama's tail in a debate, right? And I'd love to see it. But YOU JUST KNOW Obama and the MSM will find some way to gum up the works.

They'll make it all 30 second responses.
They lighting will make Newt look bad.
It'll be ALL leftist commentators, and they'll all get snippy with Gingrich. Gingrich will get snippy back, and then the meme will be: "Newt Gingrich or Grinch?" "Obama Soars With Positivity and Reaganesque Optimism to Gingrich's Mean Old Man Routine"..

There will be no Lincoln-Douglas debates. There will be maybe 2 debates (because Obama is sooooo busy and can barely focus his time).. Gingrich won't get the chance to shine like you assume he will. Obama won't allow it.

Debate assessment.

Upside

Perry did much better this time. Even had some good humor and hit Paul on the waterboarding issue.

Ron Paul would be right if we assassinated an American citizen without the use of a court of law. Problem is that once you take arms against this country you lose that citizenship

Bachmann seemed very knowledgible on many of the issues. Good grasp of factgs

Huntsman said he would use the US military to seize rogue nukes

Santorum did try and make the distinction between waterboarding and torture

Cain seemed very willing to trust American military commanders and not be so willing to assume he knows more than they do.

Newt was very strong on not allowing the debate to spin off of what is best for America into launching attacks on his fellow debators.

Downside

Perry does seem to give simplistic answers

Ron Paul continues to think that if america tucks its tail between its legs the rest of the world will ignore us. very dangerous.

Bachman needs to tie her facts together better. Was lots of openings into how budget and policy effect each other. Lot left unsaid.

Huntsman is like Obama wants to sing We are the world too much.

Santorum really seem to lack knowledge in key areas.

Cain is far too willing in foriegn policy to avoid making decisions. He seems very unwilling to make more than basic stances.

Newt has to watch about giving too much info. Stating a strong policy susinctly is better than giving a lengthy detailed answer at times.

I'm going to mildly disagree.  Mildly, cause I missed the debate, and while I'm sure he did good it's a Saturday night and no one is watching and the media is going to spin it any which way they want.

Take Perry's New Hampshire speech.  I sat down yesterday morning and watched it.  It was really good.  I thought it was a really good speech and, over-animatedness aside, he came across as sincere and was affable and fairly well spoken.  But no one actually watched it and the media spun it like, "Look at this damn fool!  What a fool this man is!  Look at his foolish mannerisms and such.  Is he drunk?  No but by God we're throwing it out there anyway."

News only happens on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  If it happens on a Saturday night it may as well never happened at all.  Perry needs to do well when people are watching.

Posted by: Robert gettin' a bit cynical at November 12, 2011 05:45 PM (F79HU)

812 It's a shame perry's people don't recognize that he didn't set the tone of the debate, that's wishful thinking as Newt and Romney set the tone.

Perry sounded out of his league on foreign affairs.  I felt the "cowboy" commentary coming back as the zero foreign aid thing will only create more tumult and uncertainty and he'll get the name "another Texas cowboy".

Newt is moving up in terms of his performance vs Obama.

Cain never really budged even when he bounced. Newt ran upwards of 12 points behind Romney in relative performance, that gap has halved in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, and New Hampshire.

Technically, that's all you need anyway to win the election (with Pennsylvania OR Ohio to spare).

For not-Romney, he is doing well versus the President.

916 My main issue at the moment is the economy: So I would like a President who can balance the budget, cut spending, and raise revenues. I'm not sure what that makes me, but I doubt it makes me a liberal.

AD, liberals are not in favor of cutting entitlements in general. I am in favor of across the board cuts. I would also like a stricter immigration policy. I believe those push me clear out of the liberal camp. My stance on abortion and gay marriage push me out of the conservative camp. On taxes, I'm kinda mixed.

Again, it really doesn't.  That makes you Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

Hell, even Clinton came around to signing welfare reform.  The question is how much to cut in entitlements, how much to cut elsewhere, and how much, and whether, to raise taxes.

928 Oh and BTW:

"liberals are not in favor of cutting entitlements in general."

is a false statement.  Obama & the liberals in Pelosi's Congress were more than happy to cut the Medicare entitlement... to help fund the even BIGGER entitlement of ObamaCare.

It is all about incrementalism.  In the end we will all be in the care of one giant omnipotent entitlement (according to them).  But you have to create and destroy littler entitlements along the way.

You don't have to, dude, I'm just explaining the snark.  Anti-entitlements, immigration, the death penalty, and being on the left on every single other issue does not make somebody an independent.

This is why a lot of liberals will honestly think they're moderates.  Just because you're more to the right than everybody else you deal with doesn't make you an independent.  What you're describing is at best center-left.

805 Herman Cain: There are things I know that I know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that I now know I don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things I do not know I don't know

Except Rummy did it in a satirical manner.

Posted by: Susan Sarandon's Saggy Boobehs at November 12, 2011 09:28 PM (piMMO)

Actually that is a fundamental mathematical/logic problem, a meta-problem. Cain knows precisely what that he meant (use of "I" actually means "anybody"), provided you related it accurately. Rummy may well have been satirical, but I doubt it. In either case, assuming you have a basic HS knowledge of algebra, it would take about three years in your average college hard science program before you would grok it.

Per your comment - Cain needs to talk down the voters.

That is a fucking copout and you know it.

Conservatives aren't opposed to taxation for paying for the military or for bridges.  The fact that you consider taxation for these things to be "mixed" just shows how much you've bought into the leftist spin of the issue.

948 Is there a reason Cain couldn't have already hired a few foreign policy experts so that he doesn't sound so ignorant at this point? Does he really expect to use the same lame excuses (if he won the nomination) against Obama in a debate? What a disaster that would be. Tell me again how good he is at running things, hiring top people, etc. Seems like pretty poor management to know he is woefully ignorant on foreign affairs and yet do nothing about it. It's dangerous to consider electing a man who is so lacking in foreign affairs knowledge.

Posted by: mike bell at November 12, 2011 10:43 PM (Kz6PE)

949 So, I didn't see the non-televised part, anything of interest? I skimmed the comments and there didn't seem to be any big debacles. I thought on the televised part, Perry came off as the best non-Newt, which is a very good performance for him. He also had the biggest substantive point of the night, at least in terms of soundbites, with his foreign aid starts at zero comment. I think it also helped that his relatively strong answer on Israel at the end was the last thing that people on tv saw, which benefits him by implicitly acknowledging him as a still viable candidate following Wednesday night. Cain seemed totally lost, and most of his answers seemed to simply restate the question in the form of an answer. Will you condone torture? No, but I will condone any behavior that isn't called torture in the memo my generals give me.

Posted by: Boone at November 12, 2011 10:45 PM (Jl3Mu)

950 I so admire the humility and courage Perry has shown these past few days. I don't want him to be the nominee, but his behaviour since the debate flub tells me a lot about the kind of man he is. Well done, Governor. When a man "steps in it" (as Perry said), and he bounces back with a strong performance, can laugh at himself, and doesn't cower, give up, etc., it shows you something about the core of the man. What a wonderful contrast to the current think-skinned, egomaniacal,  narcissist-in-chief.

Conversely, Herman Cain's behaviour since the (non)-"scandal" broke has been extremely unimpressive.

I so wanted to like Cain, but he's been clueless from the start, and looks worse, the more you see of him. Honestly, a lot of that "stellar career in private business" stuff about him is screaming "affirmative action" to me at this point.

I sure didn't expect to be saying this, but if Perry is out (or still in single digits) by the time we vote in Virginia in March, I'll be voting for Newt. He definitely #2 on my perference list now, baggage train or not.

953 Was looking for a transcript of the debate this morning and found this one on Hillbuzz.

The debate was odd as there was no female moderator so that was initially distracting since I began thinking "does CBS have no female journalists of note?"  And, while Major Garrett was "just ok", I'd never seen the other moderator, Scott until tonight and I realized he would make a lovely example of a pompous ass.  I'm told that the pompous ass replaced katie "core ik" and I laughed and laughed because I guess CBS has indicated that they don't care to have viewers of or ratings for this broadcast by their recent choice of anchors, both male and female.  But, then again, it shows when you go for the cheapest item on the shelf, sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don't.  CBS didn't but considering that he must be making minimum wage and "core ik" made millions, he's made the broadcast instantly profitable and that's probably all they care about since their audience for their evening news is slowly dying away, literally.

By doing the bulk of the debate on television and then going to the computer I discovered that those watching on the computer, from the beginning, fared much better than the unexpected throng who suddenly jumped onto the computer, en mass, when the televised part of the debate ended.  Essentially, you had to have the national journal and the CBS feed on simultaneously with the sound off on one site in order to have the live stream behave and be viewable.  The live stream was so horrendous that I imagine a lot of people just gave up.

The debate was poorly run.  The moderators did not hide their democratic liberal preferences and each and every time one of the candidates said anything even slightly critical of the President, the moderators called time.  They did however try in several spots to pit the candidates against one another and have a"bar brawl" but. for the most part,  the candidates rose above the poor moderation and didn't bite.

A lot of people felt the debate was useless in that the moderators seemed to be demanding foreign policy and what the candidates would do and the way the world moves so fast, what a candidate would do now, with circumstances now, may not be what they would do in over a year when they'd be president.  So, some folks seem to think that the candidates realizing that they might have a very different world, were not so willing to just spout out a course of action.

Cain was criticized as not knowing what he was doing but his answers were spot on.   In watching I got more of the "thinking, planning, executing" vibe from Cain than the "he didn't know what he was talking about" vibe.  From Perry I got the "ok, here's another texas cowboy to drag us into another war" vibe.   Yes, most Americans would like to see our money spent at home and left at home and not given away for nothing to other countries.  However,  they particularly discussed the Pakistan situation which is wrought with nuances.  Not the least of which is the fact that they have nukes.  It's worse to see someone present simplistic solutions to complex problems when we already have that person in the White House.  I felt Perry did this.  But, Perry has a throng of disappointed supporters all over the internet who see a little bit of life left in his campaign and think Cain is the only candidate standing in his way.  Guess they don't see Newt and Mitt.  If you like Cain, should he not become viable as a candidate, you aren't switching to Perry, you are switching to Newt.

But to send you minions out onto the internet to call Cain stupid, unprepared and disappointing, is going to prove to be a huge mistake for the Perry camp.

955 could Newt actually stay steady as a President?

NoNewt will backstab us again.  I've always thought Newt was great at ideas and presenting them - then he goes and sticks a cold knife in the back of conservatives.  I can forgive his cheatn' ways with his wives (he's a politician) but I don't think I could stand to see someone that talks such a good game - turn and stab us conservatives in the back - again.

To the Perry folks - give it up.  He is not half as good as Newt in this debate and even though he did stay ahead Cain - that's not much of win.  It's more like a special olympics win.
