— Maetenloch Elvis: That's the Way It Is
In honor of Elvis's birthday on Saturday (he would have been 76) which we totally forgot to observe I present you the trailer for the movie, "Elvis: That's The Way It Is", a 1970 documentary showing Elvis preparing for his return to live concerts for his Las Vegas Summer Festival.
If you've never seen this movie before, I heartily recommend watching it. In the decades since he died Elvis has become just a caricature to most people. But here you see the Vegas Elvis in his prime - with all his charisma and flair - and realize that Elvis impersonators are just that - pale imitations of the real thing. And 40 years later performers are still copying his moves - often unaware of even where they originally came from. You can watch more starting here.
Over Christmas I finally got a chance to visit Graceland in Memphis which is definitely worth doing at least once in your life. The main thing I noticed is how modest it is - it's a relatively small house by today's standards and lacks most of the de rigueur rock star amenities. Of course Elvis was still rich and decked it out in top of the line 1970's luxury decor and appliances i.e. flagrantly ugly and clunky. It's a shame he died in 1977 and the house was forever locked into a hideous 70's time warp.

Not only does Jared Loughner's mother work for Pima county as a Natural Resource specialist, but his father appears to work for the local Child Protective Services. So shenanigans and retroactive ass-covering seem likely.

POWIP: Thoughts on Insanity in AZ
Having dealt with a person in my extended family who had schizophrenia, I can tell you that it's often very hard to force them into treatment. Once they're over 18 the threshold to get them into a hospital becomes very high even though they're clearly unbalanced and heading for some kind of crisis. You end up hoping they'll commit some crime - hopefully a minor one - just so the police have grounds to force a mental evaluation. And even then there's no guarantee that they'll stay on their meds.
Update: And from a previous ONT here's a video that supposedly shows what it's like to be schizophrenic:

I hate those things... we tried one and it went POOFT! right in my face when I was getting it set up. They are evil and only go off at the wrong times.
And yes... they don't smell much better than the smell you're trying to cover up. Potpurri in glass containers works better than that, if you can find a non-obnoxious mix.

If there is a single real lesson to come out of this AZ mess its that there are people known to be a danger that you can't do anything about...

Slatkin & Company cinnamon and clove bud candle is excellent for making the house smell good. But, you have to only burn it for a short time or it goes beyond yummy to cloying.
Jo Malone candles are the best! And they smell good even when they aren't lit--give off a subtle aroma. I really like the orange blossom. So yummy!

It's possible, but how probable? Most states still treat the 18-yr high school kid who gets a naked picture of his 16-yo girlfriend the same way we treat actual pedophiles--stuck on a list for life. And the girlfriend gets charged the same as people who take and distribute sexual pictures of small children.
Not to mention labeling political dissenters as "mentally ill" and boxing them up somewhere is pretty standard totalitarian practice.

Then as the train pulls into the tunnel he kicks through the door and gets it stuck.. At this point I was sorting of hoping he'd lose the leg - but he gets it free and threatens a few more empty seats.
He then starts banging on the door to the driver.
The train stops in the tunnel. I figure, ok, the T driver is calling the cops to be at the next station.
Fifteen minutes later - which seemed a lot longer stuck in a tunnel with a crazy guy - the train starts moving again.
We get to the next stop - no cops. But crazy guy leaves.
A few stops later I get off and see a couple of Boston cops. I ask them if they caught the guy. They listen to my story and say, nope, no one called it in.

Enforce the laws we have. The leftist child killer in question had threatened other people including a cop and the the sherriff knew about it. Threatening a cop is a felony and would have got his right to own a gun yanked if the sherriff wasn't such a fuck up.
The W VA shooter had already been diagnosed as being nuts and that would have stopped him from buying a gun but some idiot didn't enter the info into the data base.

Did JQ Adams actually agree with Symmes, or more with the general idea of an expedition? I've also heard a number of times about Andrew Jackson's theory of a flat Earth, but I have yet to see Jackson actually making the claim. As far as Captain Symmes, he was obviously wrong about his hollow Earth theory, but it benefited the 1838 Wilkes Antarctic Expedition (funding-wise).

I think instead of worrying about the flaws in the mental health system that this dude apparently never got into, we should look at the government and law enforcement agencies that were avoiding doing their jobs to check this guy out when he is issuing daily death threats - presumably because the family was in goverment.

I'm not as concerned with the ability, or lack there of, of the mental health system to make him sane as the fact that there is currently little to nothing that can be done about people that are obviously insane and violent to get them off the street.
Go back to committing such people and then we can argue about the equivalent of parole boards - but at the very least we aren't asking "why didn't anyone do anything?"
Or I guess we could get more serious about enforcing death threats, as you suggest, but I'm significantly more worried about government overreach in that regard. We've managed to commit the violently insane in the past without picking up people for having wrong political views, however we are currently facing a political battle over "hate speech."

Well, nobodys perfect. Washington did well in Boston, but his attempt to hold NYC was risky as hell with the British Fleet right there, and he was lucky to escape without the entire army being captured. His failed defense of Philadephia the next year was better - and the Jersey campaign the winter after that was brilliant.
The march to trap Cornwallis at Yorktown was very well done, even though the war was pretty much won by then.

Yes, it does seem that Sheriff Pupnik has something to cover up. I wonder if the files in the Sheriff's office are protected from inside tampering. I hope the FBI has all the Pima County files on Loughner by now.
Speculation: since both of little Jared's parents were county employees, and Sheriff Pupnik has been Sheriff since God was a boy, I bet a box of doughnuts they know each other. And I'll also bet there is a file on Jared that is at least sufficient evidence that the County government should have ordered a psych evaluation, and that something should have gone into the database to prevent Loughner from buying a handgun, and nothing was done, to protect little crazy Jared and his parents from the scandal.
It will take a while (years maybe) but it will come out in the trial. I'll bet that by 2012, Sheriff Pupnik will not be running for re-election. I hope he has a good lawyer and big liability insurance policy. He'll need it.

The snake part came up when Batchelor named the snake and referenced something the guy had written, and it freaked Baatchelor out and the aussie just laughed. EdDs are the absolute worst. They try to teach you about teaching and they use all wrong methods when trying to convey all the information. Not only that, but they require more of you than they do of themselves. They also do not prepare young teachers for the classroom, promoting theory over practicality. The young teaching students also know they have to parrot the correct liberal platitudes when all the local superintendents come to visit.

What oldcat said.
Getting the MHP's (mental health professionals - usually some MSW's) to hold someone is next to impossible. I remember multiple times in the OR they would not commit someone for a 24 or 72 hr hold. One example was the guy who was hearing voices that told him to cut off his penis. So he did. He was hospitalized but the MHP's wouldn't hold him against his will.
Somehow there has to be some sense demonstrated, but I haven't seen it.

Supposed to work under the 'supervision' of an MD, though that supervision can be very loose. Like, show me your charts at the end of the day and I'll co-sign them. Theory is they can see the usual colds and sore throats and leave the heart failure type stuff to the MDs. Like every profession, some are very good. Some aren't
Posted by: some wench at January 10, 2011 07:50 PM (bqjJT)
Pretty much. They are people authorized to practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed doctors. Basically they are delegated to the shit-work the primary docs don't have time for - physical exams and writing prescriptions, for example.

A job as a nurse practitioner and a physician's assistant are different. A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN), while a physician's assistant (PA) has certification in the medical field, but not as many years of education or service. The nurse practitioner is has been trained in a clinical specialty, while the physician's assistant is license to practice medial care under the supervision of a physician. A physician's assistant is more of a generalist in the health-care field and may examine a patient and treat them as well as order and analyze lab tests and X-rays.
My daughter is studying to be a nurse practitioner. They can write scrips.

depending on where the sliver was located, I'd guess that lots of PA's do just that especially in busy ER's - it's back to that supervision thing. If the MD they're working under is comfortable with their skills - they'll let them do lots of those types of procedures. If there's a problem it's the MDs ass.

With the advent of Obamacare in 2014, you will see more people practicing above their previous scope of practice. PA's and RNP's have prescriptive power, but they are supposed to be under the supervision of MD's. I think you will see these people practicing independently of MD's because of the shortage of practitioners. Add over 30 million new people to the roles and subtract the number of people who are no longer going into medicine as well as the MD's who retire early because of Obamacare and it's going to be one huge mess.
Both RNP's and PA's (except for the grandfathered PA's) have masters degrees.

So they are not Qualified to take an exacto knife and try to pick a sliver of steel out of your eye? That's what this, this, individual was trying to do.
Our PA's in cardiac surgery can harvest leg vein out of the leg for bypass surgery. They also close the incisions in the leg and chest (put the wires in, etc.) They also assist the surgeon during surgery. Sometimes we RN's and techs assist too if the PA is busy, but we are no longer allowed to close subcu or skin unless we have further training (RN First Assist). In the good old days, the nurses and techs could close the leg incisions.

Best private schools too?
And no story about education is complete without the funding bit thrown in:
And local education advocates pointed out that while the state has much to tout, a real struggle lies ahead in the legislative session that opens Wednesday.
"I think we have to have a tempered celebration because in the not-too-distant future we have a potentially 5 percent across-the-board cut, which would be potentially devastating and would decimate the high-quality programs that Maryland has," said Jessica Schiller, education director at Advocates for Children and Youth.
/If money were a major driving factor in education quality, the US would have the best schools in the entire universe. Alas, a great deal of federal/state education monies get sucked into that black hole of administrative costs, the teachers unions, and enviro-wacko education nonsense.

The announcement of this "stealth" fighter isn't as concerning to me as the willingness of the Chinese government to (at least partially) publicize their military advancements. They wish to play with the big boys now. Traditionally, the Chinese only wished to be a regional power, but their political mechanizations in Africa, South America, and Middle-Asia, along with their plans to build a blue-water Navy, indicate they may have higher ambitions this time.
Alas, the Chi-Coms dreams will be cut a bit short when their Mother of All Economic bubbles finally bursts.

I find it amusing that these Commie countries have "People's Liberation" as a prefix. Talk about double-speak/thought.

What's not so amusing is our leftards do the same with any name they plant on their agendas...inevitably what ever it is really is the opposite of what it's called. "freedom of information" = denial of free speech...

The Monk type flashbacks. Hate them. Just so... whatever. Ok... they looove each other and they have history (duh...). Just 'cause they're separated, we get to have torturous memory sequences?
And I do think there are definite jokes here in there. Sort of teased for his choice of name, and later when not having his cape.
Yeah... not very funny since it will get old pretty fast. It's like someone thought that was clever funny, not just funny. They'll overuse it.
Why did this guy not put on a mask the very first time he went out as The Cape? It took getting the cape removed for him to go, "Gee... maybe I don't want people to see my face!"
When will Summer Glau get her own show where she's not the support? That, I would watch.
Maybe the show will get better now that the origin's out of the way.

I saw a few episodes of Season 4 and I liked them. Burn Notice is a bit too McGyver-ish at times, but not to the point where it dissolves into mere parody.
I think I'm going to take up watching it when Season 5 starts and catch up on the previous seasons in the meantime. May it not be a colossal waste of time ending in disappointment like the first season of Heroes and the entire span of LOST was.

I love following Iowahawk on Twitter, he's a funny dude. Here's one of his tweets from today I just read:
The taillight's red glare / on the trunk with the spare / gave proof thru the night "COEXIST" was still there (Star Spangled Prius)
Hope everyone's doing well. Haven't read thru many of the by now almost 400 posts.

France is our biggest ally, declares Obama: President's blow to Special Relationship with Britain
Though Sarkozy is actually better than Cameron, so I can see his point on that one. But historically? Britain eventually became far stronger than France.
How well do you know the House of Windsor?
I missed 8 of them.
This is a pretty good article from The DM about the MFM and Tucson, though the comments are far more interesting. Someone quoted Reagan and received 650 votes.

You're to blame for it taking over my life!
Actually, it's been really fun, albeit frustrating at times. Lousy camera angles and sometimes the Wii remote doesn't respond correctly. Otherwise, it's a great game.

Of course Obama would align himself more with the country of Cheese-eating surrender monkeys! But concerning military strength, Britain and France are pretty well matched, and I think France is poised to have a larger Navy than Britain (if they don't already).

Ever play Castlevania for the N64? That game had the worst camera positioning I have ever seen.

Nope. Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is seared into my memory because its the only game I got for the N64 other than Mario Cart and Goldeneye. It was so damn disappointing.
Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at January 10, 2011 10:28 PM (c0A3e)
Yes, it definitely reminds me of Mario 64 in that respect. It was maddening then and it's maddening now. I don't know why it's so hard to fix that.
The graphics are great and I like how they're trying to bring back the Disney cartoons of the 30s and 40s. It's fun seeing these old black and whites (and some color) cartoons in the 2D sections. It's really nicely done. I like how they revived the "forgotten" characters, too.

c'est la vie. About a year or so after being disappointed Castlevania: CoD, I got into Blizzard PC games heavily for a while, starting with Diablo and ending with Warcraft 3. And then came my ultimate gaming salvation, God of War...
btw, have you heard anything about Diablo 3? I imagine Blizzard isn't going to release that for a while, given that they are probably raking in the dough with WoW: Cataclysm.

My first 'me paying the bill' dentist was from the 'We cater to cowards' section of the Yellow pages. Headphones, and most importantly, nitrous feed made it a pretty decent experience.

/D3 looks too bright for me. I remember being freaked out playing Diablo because of its dark atmosphere - D3 lacks this apprehension factor.
