Tim Tebow Leads Broncos on Game Winning Drive
— Ace

I know this is old. I'm late to the party.

I like the idea of Tebow. I'm bored with the NFL's current hegemonic offensive style. It's all the same.

I'm rooting for schemes, not teams. I want some wildcat action or something different.

The Broncos, led by 220 pound fullback-shaped not-particularly-good-at-passing Tebow, seem to be different.

He sucked the whole game. They won because the Jets defense was gassed playing at Mile High and because the Jets play selection blew.

Fine. Win or lose, but what drove me nuts was the hyperventilating by the announcers about how great Tebow was followed by non-stop Tebow slobbering on all the sports shows afterward.

I wonder what the score for the Broncos games would be if they weren't spending 3 and a half quarters trying to force Tebow into playing in a way he's not comfortable with and just letting him do what he does naturally, which is what happens in that last half a quarter when they are down and getting desperate.

Did you catch the end of the game last night ace? I passed out at half time, woke up at 4am and caught all of Timmy Touchdown's highlights.

I don't think you can win a Super Bowl with that offense, but as a Denver native, and someone who came of age in the John Elway Era....well, the buzz and excitement taking place reminds me of childhood.

Really it doesn't matter, Denver was hopeless this season under Orton, and Tebow is making this year fun and exciting. Even casual NFL fans are interested in the Broncos.

I ain't complainin.

Fair points but Young was always a more accurate passer, with a better throwing motion.

Tebow is wildly inaccurate, and takes too long to deliver the football.

Mariucci said something along the lines of, hmm, he actually knows what he's doing. But still, this can't last. You may need to score more than 10 points on offense to win a game. Not at all in the case of football. It's all about setting the opposition up via formations and plays you run in the first half and wearing them down. Completely different than the NBA.

Yeah, and in most divisions, his insertion into the starting role would fall under the "let's see what we got for next year" category. But, they're in the AFC Worst, so they actually in the thick of this thing. I guess anything that makes the collective heads explode of the talking media is a good thing. I just wouldn't call it good football, or even interesting football as Ace thinks it is...

I do think that another NFL team will figure out how to stop the current Denver offense before the end of the season, though, unless Tebow improves as a passer. I really hope that he does, because then he'll be even more fun to watch.

This. It's not like the league is full of Rodgers, Mannings, and Bradys. Most of the qb's are average to below average. A lot, such as Sanchez, are not consistent enough. Analysts act like if you don't have a premier qb you can just pick one up through the draft or your local supermarket, it aint gonna happen.

So the question is: Do you want a fair-to-good 2nd-tier standard-issue pocket passer (what most people have) or do you want a good-to-very good 1st tier running quarterback? Didn't watch the game. Had to work. As a matter of fact, I haven't watched any of the Bronco's games (we just don't get them that often here). But I do like Tebow's unabashed love for God. It's refreshing.

Not at all the same. Payton Manning is, effectively, the O Coordinator on for the Colts (part of why they're so bad this season). There are virtually no huddles in their offense- they go to the line (which has several benefits) and then Payton is literally telling the rest of his team what their assignments will be when he sees how the the defense lines up.

For a QB who can do that, it's brutal.

He also hurt the Broncos with a lot of bad trades and general personnel decisions. Thank god Bowlen bit the bullet and fired him. Now the Broncos are playing pretty ugly but at least they are winning some games with Tebow and it makes almost all the left taking heads explode plus annoys the fantasy football/armchair QB crowd which is also fun for someone is not seriously into football but is a bit of a Broncos fan.

I was with you when Denver started this, but I'm beginning to discount this argument. The defenders might be big and fast, but so are the offensive linemen. If you get receivers who are willing to block (see Houston, again), then this style might actually work long-term.

Assuming, of course, your quarterback (tailback?) is built like Tebow or Newton, and doesn't get destroyed by the hitting.

They don't run a hurry-up, they run a no huddle. Like squares and rectangles. No huddle is devastating against defenses, because it doesn't give them time to do substitutions (which is truly devastating against package defenses like the Ryans run) or call plays. They have to give general assignments and hope that's good enough.

One of the most amazing things to watch (when you can) is the Colts O (under Manning) against the Raven's D. The play callers/coordinators for both teams are then on the field. That's some awesome football.

I wish people would give Tebow the same leeway when he is in the exact same position.

The thing is he's winning right now, when he loses you can pull him or trade him. I think some people are a little to high on him, his accuracy is terrible. But I'm not selling stock yet because he actually wins and a lot of other offenses right now suck. I think he can last longer than Vick because he's bigger, Vick is a toothpick and a point guard trying to play quarterback.

My understanding was that he had to transfer high schools because he wanted to play quarterback and his coach wouldn't let him. It was probably something they never corrected because he was doing well as is.

Plus, running a high-speed, huddleless offense is physically debilitating to the defense. Anyone who's played defense in football at any level knows what it would be like have to expend that energy chasing the ball only to have to immediately run back to your position and get in the stance, play after play after play......

Had a collegiate 67% completion percentage, he HAS to improve on what he is doing now. This one is not true. Sanchez and the Jets' offense is actually middle-of-the-pack for the NFL, so holding them to 13 (and scoring 7) is a big deal.

Remember that Tebow as demoted to third string at the beginning of the season. Oh, how the pundits clicked their toungues in glee. It is nice to see them eat crow.

But the greatest thing Tebow brings to the table? his unquenchable enthusiasm. His leadership. His teammates will back him. For better or worse, this is his team. And if the coaching staff told him the team would be better off if he moved to a TE/H-back role, he'd do it without complaint.

Normally, you don't want to risk your passer getting injured... No worry here...

Tebow's size is the difference, it is power running with misdirection... very much like the wildcat (which was only run successfully by Ronnie Brown, a Running Back, who had just enough arm strength to throw the occasional pass) An average sized running QB wouldn't last more than 2 games at this level, because the QB needs to keep it 30-50% of the time to keep the defense on its heels.

Denver should be ready to play Orton at any time (and start as a surprise) to keep the defenses really off balance (and wasting preparation time during the week)

204 Well since I am a big Georgia Tech fan, and after watching some of that Denver game last night, and listening to all of the "experts" talking about how this style of offense can't work I was glad to see Mr Tebow make liars out of them. Just like coach Paul Johnson has done everywhere he has gone to be a coach and brought this option style offense with him.

I do love the better then me analysts insisting on calling this a "quarterback read" style offense. Well, Yeah. They just couldn't bring themselves to use the word option.

The biggest drawback I can see with this style of offense is if you run full time you have to make changes in your offensive line to get the quicker, more nimble lineman necessary to run the sweep plays and just like Georgia Tech is going to see in a couple of weeks when they play the hated Georgia Bullpups, those 300 lb defensive lineman are going to simply squash them and thereby blow up this style of offense. Right now Denver still has their big guys but if they ever go to the lighter lineman then yeah game over.

Why not run option, if you're a lousy Denver team going nowhere? If Tebow gets hurt, you go back to sucking with Orton. No downside. Obviously, lots of upside. If they commit to this offense (which admittedly is a huge risk -- if there's a coaching change, how long would it take to rebuild?), they could even draft RGriffinIII from Baylor in April, who can run the same offense, except he's as fast as Vick and is a great passer. Hell, they could sign the best option QB in college (whoever that might be) as an undrafted Free Agent, because no one else wants him! So then they'd have 3 QBs to run it against teams that never see the option.

Timmeh is an entertaining performer who people are excited to pay to see what he might do next. There have been many such characters in the history of the NFL, who were lacking in some needed conventional skill but who found a way to win.

That's not to say Tebow is going to have a better career than Elway. That IS to say that we'd be wise to give these young kids some time.
