— Open Blogger Christopher Buckley (son of the late William F. Buckley) took heat (deserved, in my opinion, and particularly in retrospect) for swooning over Barack Obama in the 2008 election cycle. You have to wonder how he feels now, given President Feckless's wrecking of the economy and the federal budget and his persistent unseriousness in dealing with massive and ever-growing deficits. (On the other hand, this post by Ace post-SOTU last January suggests that Buckley's still snorting the Kool Aid uncut.)
You see, back in 2007, Buckley published one of his best and funniest novels, "Boomsday". While there are subplots aplenty, the core plot revolves around a growing revolt by younger Americans against the massive entitlement programs that retiring Baby Boomers are counting on and the resulting increasing tax burdens they (the younger generations) face. This leads to the introduction in Congress of draconian legislation to address the issue, legislation that is not taken seriously at first, then draws increasing attention and support, including from a presidential candidate. In the end [minor spoiler] the legislation is watered down and compromised to the point of having no real teeth [end spoiler].
Sound familiar?
Of course, since this is Christopher Buckley, the legislation in question is [minor spoiler] legislation allowing significant tax breaks and other financial incentives for retired Boomers who agree to voluntary assisted suicide by a given age [end spoiler] -- a 21st century equivalent of Swift's "A Modest Proposal". But, heck, is it that far of a step from bureaucratic rationing of life-prolonging procedures to rewarding people for voluntarily killing themselves? One could argue that the latter is less intrusive and more humane. And if Obama gets elected to a second term, well, all bets are off.
Finally, and contra Ace's comments in his post from January, I've found most of Buckley's novels entertaining and decidedly un-PC. His best is probably "Florence of Arabia", which is a hilarious and unflinching look at misogyny in Muslim culture. YMMV. ..fritz..

I'm currently reading Richard Evans' three volume history of Germany and the Nazis (halfway through third volume). One thing that struck me was his depiction of how the Final Solution began by switching over the units and techniques employed for eugenics purposes to genocide. It seemed a soft and casual transition. So no, it really isn't a far step, and people who believe it is will be unpleasantly surprised.

Why would anyone need to commit suicide? Why not just agree to opt of of SS for the good of the nation? I'm a Boomer and I would rather have no SS then to see the nation disintegrate economically and live the rest of my life in a scenario like the movie "The Postman".

The rationing of health care for the elderly won't be the only thing that speeds up the inevitable. The quality of care also goes down for many elderly patients depending on the doctor. A family doctor in town here is notorious for being horrible with older patients. I've heard an anecdotal story from another family member whose father was coughing up blood. She went with her father to see the doctor or else the doctor would have most likely sent her father home telling him "You're just getting old."

Besides that, the evil babyboomers paid for their SS with increased withholding and later retirement age (twice). All that extra money was enough to get SS past the hump.
Too bad the comiecrats spent it all. Now they are talking about another "fix". That at the same time they refuse to backoff on their insane spending levels now.
So yes, we are doomed. If everyone over the age of 60 committed suicide tomorrow we would still be doomed.

Like he deserves to rule you. And if he can't do it personally, someone like him should. Obama, for example.
He'd also think you're a chump for furthering his cause, if he thought about it. But he doesn't have to.

I would posit that this message will be carefully crafted over time until the population will be in the position of being grateful to choose the time, place and method of their death:
"I was really hoping I'd have the opportunity to live till my daughter's college graduation, but the government's telling me they need my kidneys for transplant purposes within the next year. I have a week to respond or they'll assume that I have no argument and will come to do the harvest next Monday...
"Hmm...
"Well, I guess I'll ask for a waiver to allow me to kill myself after the holidays. That gives me a few more months. Phew! Glad I didn't book that Aruba vacation for next spring like I was considering! Dodged a bullet there! Sorta..."

I used to wonder why people like Buckley, Frum, et al could support Obama. Or how anyone who considered himself a Republican or Conservative could back Obama or an Obama-type.
The only answer I can come up with is that there a large percentage of the of the Republican Party, and ever some conservatives, who don't want a reduced government that doesn't interfere with our lives, but rather they simply want to rule from the right.
I think Buckley falls into that category.
Had you asked me ten years ago I would have said I was a Republican, had you asked me in 2004 I would have said I am a conservative, however now I find myself more and more leaning toward libertarians, however they seem to have their fair share of problems as well.

From watching the Luntz special and reading about some of the town halls, I think people can understand if someone explains this all to them. But it's going to take a lot of education for them to understand that you can't just cut foreign aid or waste and balance the budget. The entirety of the Republican House was taught how to sell this (for several months in fact), so they all need to get on this and get ahead of this DCCC ad buy.

It's statists, all the way up. The limited-government types are few and far-between, and tend to term limit themselves out, out of a sense of decency unfelt by the brazen tyrants that end up ruling for life. See: Boehner, John

Me too, and they did some push-polling, but the difficulty is I haven't seen numbers much different. Still waiting for Ras but this was always going to be an uphill battle. That's one of the reasons why so many in the House never wanted to touch a number of these things, is because it's so incredibly dangerous politically. But I really do believe that these polls could change if every conservative in the House was out there talking about these issues and helping people to understand what's at stake.

I'll never understand how someone with enough raw intelligence to write a good book can have the stupidity and lack of insight not to have seen exactly what Obama was going to be like as President. The guy was completely readable during the 2008 campaign to anyone with a brain and two open eyes.

It's all "a show." Even one person in front of a room with only thirty people is still a show (of sorts), and should be run as such. You don't need the speaker to be aware of it, you just need the setup folks to be aware of it.
Get the lights right. Get a good PA, with a good mic. Make sure everyone can see the speaker. Make sure the speaker is able to control the room with the mic.
And then have people with the guts to talk straightforwardly to the people on that stage.

I agree. It's also a great advantage the Dems have because they combine fear tactics with great presentations and it's easy for uninformed voters to fall for that because the logic of the situation was dwarfed by the level presentation. So I wish we lived in a society where people were able to just focus on substance but that's not been true for some time now. Thus, our side needs to make a logical presentation of facts in an appealing and relatable way.

Nothwithstanding what may have happened to Christopher since, Buckley's No Way Treat a First Lady is flat out hilarious, combining the best elements of the Clinton marriage and the OJ trial. <spoiler alert, but its okay since Buckley once gave away the ending to one of Tom Clancy's novels> Imagine that just after drilling Barbra Streisand in the Lincoln Bedroom, Bill comes back to the residence only to be beaned by Hilary in the coconut with an antique spittoon. Bill is discovered ... ahem ... stiff ... in his bed the next morning. Hilary is charged with murder and is defended in the latest trial of the century by the long lost law school love she threw over in favor of Bill. <end spoiler alert> Pretty damn funny stuff.

It runs in the family actually.
Google Edgar Smith, a man who murdered a 15 year old girl, and WFB's role in getting him out of prison. Edgar Smith almost succeeded in killing another victim.
Who knows how many girls he killed before he got caught.
I always admired WFB but he has a lot of blood on his hands.
