Chris Christie Presser at 1:00pm;
Bill Kristol Suicide at 1:05pm
— Gabriel Malor All sources say that Big Man is once again going to announce that he is not running for the presidency. All sources except for Fox News, which spent a good 30 minutes suggesting that it had sources who said he would be running for the presidency. Guy Benson's take is probably the best I've seen.
The announcement will take place at 1pm EASTERN (just under half an hour from now). You can watch it live on the web and probably on every news channel in the United States.
Confirmed: Christie says "now is not my time." Note that unlike the President Christie managed to show up just when he said he would.
So . . . second look at Paul Ryan?

Someone remind me why Christie is more qualified for the Presidency now than Palin was for the Vice Presidency in 2008.
I'm not trying to start a fight (okay, I am, because you're ugly), but I thought we decided that first-term governors weren't generally the best bets?
Long story short, there's no Great Conservative Hope out there now, so we're going to have to muddle through with the field we have.

In my view, the Republican attack on Obama has to be focused on four main issues:
1. His extraordinarily poor record on job creation.
2. Repealing Obamacare.
3. Reining in federal spending.
4. His lack of executive experience/incompetence.
We already have a leading candidate (Romney) who, if nominated, would make us give up on one of these issues (Obamacare) because of his prior positions. We don't need another candidate (Christie) who would make us give up on another issue (Obama's lack of executive experience). Sure, Christie is competent as a governor, but it's only been less than two years. He's just not ready.
We've tried "not ready" already. Let's try "ready" for a change. That means Romney or Perry in the current field, or else someone better put the thumbscrews on Mitch Daniels' wife and get him back in the race.

I suspect Christie is a RINO. However, since he's not a big government progressive like Romney or a "compassionate conservative" like Rick "You're All Heartless" Perry, I don't think he'd act on it, which is what I care about.
Case in point: It wouldn't surprise me if Christie was, deep down, pro-choice. However, he de-funded Planned Parenthood because New Jersey couldn't afford it. Our economy is boned. We need someone who'll shrink the size of government. I think the big man would have been willing to do that.
Having said that, I don't think he's running.

Romney has promised to repeal Obamacare. Of course, it's not under his direct control, which is why we need the House and the Senate to act, but even on Day One he's promised to halt it in its tracks by granting a 50-state waiver.
So why again do you insist he won't? Is just because, if you say it enough, it will psychologically justify in your mind not supporting him in the general election?

I am glad Christie is not running. It's too early for him. Maybe after a 2nd term as governor of NJ, having built a solid unimpeachable record of turning a state economy around.
And people need to quit labeling everyone to the ideological left of Attila The Hun as a 'RINO'. Remember Bill Buckley's advice about voting for the most conservative candidate who is electable.
You will never find a candidate who shares each and every one of your positions. Find a candidate who gets the big things right and support him or her.

I think - assuming it's true he's not running - that he just felt it was too late to master the issues and prepare the ground plan for a campaign this late in the game. I think what is happening to Perry is a symptom of what can happen when you decide to jump into the Big Leagues half-assed.
I can respect his decision for knowing his limits... but seriously question why people like him and Perry didn't start prepping 3 years ago. Were they all so dazzled by Obama, they didn't see the amazing SCOAMF Meltdown coming from a mile off?

Hey, LMendez, you yourself said Perry was imploding at a record rate. I mean, yes -- I'm making my accommodations with Romney, I'm getting into that "settling" phase, but what other option is there? Perry seems semi-retarded, lacks any sort of policy vision, and continues to insult my intelligence on the one issue Romney (who vetoed in-state tuition for illegals in MA) can plausibly get to his right on. Cain isn't a serious candidate given his complete lack of experience, tendency to frequently gaffe, and silly 9/9/9 plan. Christie isn't running.
It's process of elimination and that leaves Romney. If Perry magically picks up his game, then Perry will get an INSTANT second look from me. But I'm afraid that would require him to essentially become a different canddiate than who he is. I'm still holding out hope, but I'm pessmistic.

I wasn't saying Romney wouldn't repeal Obamacare. He's actually pretty good on the substance. It's just that as a campaign issue he wouldn't be able to use his opposition to Obamacare as effectively as another candidate who didn't have the Massachusetts version as baggage.

No, no he won't: a Ham Sandwhich could beat Obama in 2012. Come to think of it, President Sandwhich would do a better job of running the country, simply by not getting in the way of the American people.
The real tragedy of Romney getting the nomination - and I'm slowly resigning myself to him getting it - is that we conservatives will have missed the best chance we'll have for the rest of our natural lifetimes since Reagan of seeing a true conservative elected President. It always vexes me the Democrats went hard, hard left in 2008, and WON. Meanwhile, we psyched ourselves into believing we could win only by being more like Obama.

Note that unlike the President Christie managed to show up just when he said he would.
Now that is some prime, prime bitchiness. I approve.
Who holds a press conference to say no, again?
Someone who keeps saying no and about whom people keep saying that no means yes and who is really truly and utterly fed up about it? Just a random stab in the dark. I'm still trying to get those who claimed that Christie was being coy about his intentions to provide me anything that Christie said himself that was anything other than a no to justify blaming him for the speculation.

I think Daniels got out because he was deferring to his wife; as I understand the back story, they got back together after she left him so that some other dude could put the thumbscrews to her ... and the ball gag, etc. At least he didn't get cuckolded ... that we know of anyway.
Seriously, if your old lady runs off on you for another guy, and then comes back to use you as the backup plan when Plan A doesn't turn out the way she hoped it would, and then puts the kibosh on the political dream of a lifetime, then she's far more trouble than she's worth. She must give toe-curlers or something.

I've been pretty firmly opposed to Romney, but while I don't believe he'd make a particularly conservative President, there's little doubt that he'd be more conservative than Obama.
Better a "moderate" (like most Republican presidents we've had) than a hardcore leftist. Given the massive deficit and debt, I don't believe that Romney would go on trillion dollar spending sprees.

That was in response to Romney being touted. There are at least 4 candidates who support most of my positions, but:
One is a crazy libertarian who couldn't get elected dogcatcher and I wouldn't vote for anyway.
One went off the deep end over gardicil and regulary stepped on her crank
One can't avoid stepping on his dick every time he talks to Kommie Wallace (but I am still giving him a chance)
And one is being systematically being destroyed by the MFM and a lot of the Morons are listening to them.
Romney doesn't support ANY of my positions by his deeds. I do not trust his rhetoric.

By dabbling around the edges and looking good doing it, all the while appealing to every conservative in America with an IQ under 90 who hasn't already committed to Ron Paul, she's managed to get paid and leave herself in a politically relevant position despite her shortcomings. There will be some races in 2012 where she is a real asset for the GOP. All in all, I think she's played things pretty well given the hand she's holding.
In short, she's cool, it's her fanatical supporters and attackers I'd like to burn at the stake.

To paraphrase Rumsfeld, 'you hit the campaign trail with the candidate field you have'. Do I wish there were a Reagan-esque candidate to support? Of course. Is there a 'perfect conservative' in the current GOP field? Of course not. But if we're lucky, the campaign process will winnow the field down to the most electable conservative. But I think you would agree that we must keep our eyes fixed on the common goal: making Obama a one-term President.

While it is scary, ballistic missile capabilities are all these three fanatical nutjob factions have to counter Israel's military prowess. The Israelis know the terrain of the Golan Heights very well (so well that the IDF, facing 10:1 forces at times, was able to use the ground there to stall off the Syrian advance for several days during the Yom Kippur War) so the minute Syria started transferring missiles to their side of the Golan Heights, the missile sites would be wiped out by the IAF in a very short amount of times.

Who would trust that she wouldn't get a bug up her ass and quit the Presidency, in the highly unlikely event she were elected?

Look. You've seen the GOP field. These are the people we get to choose from. In a nation of over 300,000,000 people, you'd hope more talent would rise to the top, but these are the people we have to choose from. You don't get to vote for Reagan again.
Anyone who says 'the nominee isn't conservative enough for me- I'm taking my vote and going home' isn't being realistic.

Wasn't a bullshit critique when applied to Obama, now was it? It wasn't *just* that The One was a horrible liberal, he also turned out to be an utterly craptacular politician, negotiator, consensus-builder, etc. etc. He could actually perform the MECHANICS of the job of President because he simply lacked any experience as a political executive.
Now I don't hate Cain -- quite the contrary, other than his weird mosque remark I really, really like him and have been thinking for awhile about how he can serve in the next GOP administration (my bet is Secretary of Commerce or perhaps Treasury) -- but the fact is that he's never run for office before in his life AND IT SHOWS. It shows in all the gaffes he makes, the stuff that takes him off-message every single time it looks like he's threatening to 'break out' of the pack. This election is too fucking important to put a rookie up against the Obama Machine in 2012 and pray.

Looks at this point like a Romney/Rubio ticket and although not what I had hoped for from the beginning, I could easily live with. With a Republican House and Senate behind him, I'm sure Romney will do a fine job.
SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND:
As it becomes apparent Republicans will take large majorities in the House and Senate, the fact that Romney is somewhat moderate will give Independents some comfort about turning the keys to government over to a single party.
Evangelicals need to get over it and vote for a Mormon.
Not perfect, not terrible.

The point is, he has no experience running for office. That part about him is an "unknown". It maybe be a minor unknown variable, but don't scoff at anyone wanting to take it into consideration.
But let me be the first to say this: Herman Cain cannot be elected as a GOP president at this point in time because he is black. It is my belief there are enough conservative voters who will never, ever vote for a black man for president. Sorry, but that's the truth. We may disagree on the percentage of potential GOP voters who would sit out electing a black man, and whether it would cost us the presidency. But I think the number is significant enough to do just that.

You mean explain why he's a lousy campaigner? He's won 33% of the elections he's run for so far. He lost Iowa to a guy he outspent ten to one. He lost New Hampshire - his backyard - against a guy who was politically dead six months beforehand.
He proudly informed the media that his favorite novel was Battlefield Earth and he described an example of his executive decision making as the time he washed off his rear view window after the dog strapped to the roof had diarrhea all over it. He accused his opponent in Iowa of using a floating cross to spread anti-Mormon hatred. Recently he commiserated with millions of Americans when he, a multi-millionaire, said he was also unemployed.
If Mitt were a true wunderkind of campaigning, why do so many Republicans outright despise him?

Yeah, and he wasn't going to get re-elected in that liberal state either.
As to a lousy executive, even a casual look at his actual record, not the stuff the msm puts out but the factual record, shows that he is an outstanding executive. He cut spending dramatically in MA. He helped reverse the trend of jobs leaving the state. He closed a $3 billion dollar hole in the budget and left the state with a surplus in 4 years.
And none of that is still around because his successor undid it all. The only thing that is left from Mitt's days is Romneycare.

6/28 Bristol Palin stated that her mother knows definitely whether she's to run '12 campaign, that the family knows and in agreement, but at that time some things are better left in the family. To date, Palin's said there's still room for more, and that she'll announce when the time's right for her.
Politico revels with news that another GOP's legal counsel made calls regarding early state filing deadline.

Still, Palin never infringed upon Americans' Constitutional Rights. So on that, I'd vote her rather than Perry. And she's not mandated or legislated bankrupting socialized health care, so I'd vote her rather than Romney. Cain earned and proved his education and business successes on his own merit, and he's actually formulated a tax platform that people understand. I don't think there's a different energy policy or labor policy between the candidates. Correct me if I'm wrong. But they'd all "Drill, baby, Drill!" for Jobs, Jobs, Jobs.
