Snow is coming down heavy now. It is the opposite of what the idiots predicted. They said heavy snow overnight followed by sleet after sunrise.

Gabrielle Giffords shooting: Frightening, twisted shrine in Arizona killer Jared Lee Loughner's yard

A sinister shrine reveals a chilling occult dimension in the mind of the deranged gunman accused of shooting a member of Congress and 19 others.

Hidden within a camouflage tent behind Jared Lee Loughner's home sits an alarming altar with a skull sitting atop a pot filled with shriveled oranges.

A row of ceremonial candles and a bag of potting soil lay nearby, photos reveal.

Experts on Sunday said the elements are featured in the ceremonies of a number of occult groups.

A.  We have few, if any, protections against the mentally unbalanced who seek to do harm to others.  The entire sweep of history tells us this.

Which leads me to believe that his family is from one of the MFM "protected classes".

39 "They weren't real friendly," said the neighbor who described himself as 60 and retired. They mostly didn't talk to anyone and mainly stayed inside. "Loners," he called them. from foxnews.com Another neighbor, Anthony Woods, who was three years behind Loughner in school, said the father in the household was argumentative. Woods said the dad would complain about everything from neighbors' trash cans on the street to standing too close to his property by the fence. Woods said law enforcement interviewed the mother and father at the Loughner house Saturday night.

The memo also includes information about the suspect's mother, who works for the Pima County Board of Supervisors.

Loughner lives with his parents in a Tucson neighborhood that one neighbor described as part of an area that is notorious for "stash houses" for Mexican gangs to bring drugs into the U.S. and store them.

Another neighbor directly across from the home also did not want to give his name, but said a mother, son and father live at the house.

A. Clearly, what is needed is more restrictive gun control laws, especially in AZ, where pretty much anyone can go into a supermarket and buy a machine gun. And then maybe we should spend some money on mental health! hat poor boy wouldn't have done this had he been given good care. Obamacare will fix that.

B. The left is just being hyperbolic. It's the right that causes the problems, because they are the ones who have the guns and the bombs, and the talk show hosts who goad people into using them.

So far that profile has consisted of statements from just a couple of classmates- any information on Mr. and Mrs. Loughner has been conspicuously absent. If the kid's father had been a bus driver who once attended a tea party meeting you could bet that every time the MFM mentioned him he would be "Jared Loughner, son of a Tea Party activist..." Morons, the heat is on. It's only a matter of time now.

The Thomas Szasz anti-institutionalization movement (and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest) left a really big ethical issue undiscussed: if the organs of government can't be trusted to make involuntary-commitment decisions (and there was a lot of evidence that they could not), who the hell is? It's easy for the neighbors to take a vote after the shooting stops. Up until then, the rest of us have a disconcerting prejudice to err on the side of caution.

The old "conservative" liberals who built and manned the mental-institution cultural control edifice responded to the assault of gen-1 libertarianism with classic passive-aggression: "OK, here's your crazies, out on the street. Hope you're happy with them. " The 'fabric' of American 'life' changed the next morning. It happened just that fast.

72 46 That idiot ex-Congresscritter Boccieri (OH, defeated in Nov.) claims he's had death threats and implies that they and the AZ tragedy were the result of political action strategy (Palin, Boehner, et. al.) this past year. They're coming out of the woodwork, folks. I'm trying to find the link.

The Dems aren't wasting time in finding ways to use this shooting to further limit our 1st Amendment rights:

Dem planning bill that would outlaw threatening lawmakers (which I thought was already a crime?)

Rep. Robert Brady (D-Pa.) reportedly plans to introduce legislation that would make it a federal crime to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a federal official or member of Congress.

Therein lies the rub - the "perceived" threat.  Who determines that?  Is it like the definition of pron - you know it when you see it?

Only my 2nd attempt at a link here so fingers crossed - it's a nice doggie story with a happy ending

SARBI the bomb detection dog has seen a lot more action than most labradors.

Injured during a Taliban rocket propelled grenade attack in Afghanistan in 2008, Sarbi was last seen hobbling away from the firefight by SAS soldier Rob Maylor.....

I agree that it is his fault and his fault alone. However, there were flaming red flags (no pun intended) that an intervention (placed into an asylum perhaps) should have occurred (should being operative word but laws probably would have or did prevent that). This was perhaps avoidable, and preventable, to some extent. But, yes I do agree bottom line it is all on him.

91 The Giffords kerfuffle in a nutshell:

LEFT WING: A Democratic politician was shot! ItÂ’s Sarah PalinÂ’s fault for inciting the shooter! And this is the inevitable result of hateful right-wing vitriolic speech!

RIGHT WING: Um, the guyÂ’s acquaintances say he was a left-winger, and if you look at his favorite books, he was apparently a Nazi Commie Buddhist. He was just nuts. Politics has nothing to do with it.

LEFT WING: Stop politicizing this tragedy!!!

115 What a disgusting display by the mfm. I remember vividly when Reagan was shot. There was no immediate and endless attempt by the mfm to blame the political environment or hunt down left wing hate speech. They actually did their job and tried to find out what motivated Hinckley to commit what anyone would recognize as an insane attack. I don't give a shit what comes out of the squeakholes of idiots on DU or assclowns like Kos. They bathe in hate speech daily. But I have a real problem being lectured to by the cock suckers in the mfm about hate speech on the right while they blithely ignore the fact that this kid is a 9/11 truther, apparently met and held a personal grudge against Giffords, is an occultist, scared teachers to the point where they wouldn't turn their back on him and eventually had him kicked out of schools, had alienated his friends with his bizarre behavior, believed the government was using mind control to dominate the population and was obsessed with grammar and haven't been able to dig up a shred of information connecting this psycho with the political right or Palin. CARS were tossed around like corks and people clung to trees, signposts and anything within reach when Toowoomba's inland tsunami hit yesterday.

The torrent washed houses off their stumps, and snapped 4m-high trees at the base throughout the regional centre and into the Lockyer Valley.

Four people are dead - a woman and a boy died in Toowoomba, while a man and a male child were washed away from a house at Murphy's Creek. At least six people are confirmed missing, while dozens more remain stranded.

Another issue not really talked about, but will affect you all economically. A lot of coking coal is mined in Austrailia, which the flood is slowing down or halting. As a result coking coal prices are expected to go up 33%.

For those of you not familiar. Coking coal is required to make steel and other metal products. So expect the prices to be passed on to you.

138 it is a dangerous place when we place any responsibility on the other parties for the shooting.

I'm still not saying they're responsible for the shooting; I'm saying the shooting has uncovered things that other people ARE responsible for.  For example, there's a report that the shooter was investigated for making death threats, and another that the gun background check found he had no record.  If there was an investigation and it was not recorded, or the record was not given over to ATF, the person(s) responsible for records need to be held accountable.

On NBC news - they gave a complete white-washed version of Loughner.  No mention of his favorite books.  If you list one of your favorite books as "The Communist Manifesto" and "Mein Kampf" - after killing 6 people - isn't that note worthy?

I had one of those those the other night about Dennis Miller.  And he was gooooood, if a little talky.

And in just the last few years we have had this incident, the Virginia Tech incident,

As a college teacher, I can confirm that if this guy got himself kicked out of a community college, he had to have been weapons-grade crazy.  The benefit of the doubt is ALWAYS given to the student in this student-as-consumer college culture.  You would not believe what I have to go through to even get action on an open-and-shut plagiarism case.  Unless someone is shouting racial slurs, administrators will shrug and say that they can't do anything about it until a threatening student actually does something.

In the VA Tech case, Nikki Giavonni-- although I find her work and her politics detestable-- did stand her ground and got the shooter booted from her classroom because he was freaking everybody out, and a HUGE good for her on that.  Nobody listened when she warned admins about him. But it took someone of her stature in the academy to get it done.  A lowly adjunct like me would almost never get a response like that.

Teaching online is sounding really, really good right about now.

167 Agree HeatherRadish.  It is just that all the ancillary finger pointing always comes up immediately like they have equal weight with the actual shooting.  The record issue example you use could just as easily happen for someone that would not go off shooting others, and even if their had been investigation of Loughner, that doesn't mean that would have stopped him from creating some future tragedy.

Last night on Batchelor he had one of his regulars, the guy based in Israel.  He was saying that the list of books struck him as a reading list for a college course.  So that led him to do some research about the guys' education.  I guess that would make sense since according to this guy he proudly proclaimed where he'd been educated or something, somewhere on the internet.  Anyway, wasn't listening so closely, lately ten things at once is becoming the norm, but, apparently this guy discovered something about the guy being involved in special school programs and the guest had some fascinating things to say.  Here's a link to Batchlor's website, the link to the podcasts is on the right, he usually puts them up in the early afternoon.

Action: No matter what else accuse Republicans, particularly any outspoken ones; accusation of inciting the loon to violence through political discourse. Remember lesson; silence your enemies

Yeah, that occurred to me as well, especially when I saw The Republic.  PoliSci 101 as a liberal arts core, or something. It's entirely possible that he listed whatever was on the syllabus-- I mean, my PoliSci 101 reading list was quite similar, and he may even have had a crossover with a lit course, which would explain Animal Farm and F451.

Thanks for the link, curious.  I'd sure like to check that out, as knowing more about his education would be interesting.

193 dogfish--Law enforcement in a free society is it's usually reactive, rather than proactive. Until some crime takes place, everyone goes about their business (bureaucratic regulations may be different, depending on agency).  The perp may never have shot anyone, despite the earlier death threats, but he did.

I just don't see what is gained by letting any malfeasance with the perp's criminal  records or lack thereof slide. We expect the shooter to take responsibility for his acts, why not expect other person(s) involved to take responsibility for their acts?

The left is too willing to blame the right in part because they don't want to acknowledge that social services is a sham and these loonies are not being treated in any way. They say it takes a village...the village failed. But more importantly, the parents...with whom he loves, failed. Nobody but this kid and his parents are to blame. Him because he did the shooting, them because they failed to raise an upright kid. If that kid had a Chinese Mom a la the WSJ article on Saturday, this would not have happened.

207 @206, in the Holy Shit Dept, duPont is buying Pioneer HiBred corn seed company. Now you can really make some conspiracy points with that.

Filed under Madness of Crowds (and I remember this first from 11/22/63): after each of these national descents into garment-rending, the country and its newsmachine slowly awaken, look around dazed, backtrack a little to catch up...and every time, some big thing has passed them by. Seems unique to us and our Sgt-Peppers level of media self-awareness. Taking the US while it's navel-gazing would be easier than the Russkies dropping the big one at noon on a Saturday, when the sirens are all going off anyway.

I never go to candlelight vigils, having a vigil of my own to keep. My "thots'n'prairz!11!" are not so easily directed. Hope not alone in this.
