2 That WaPo sidebar article on JFK is a MUST read

Fifty years ago next week, Richard Nixon stood uncomfortably on the Capitol's inaugural platform and watched his rival John F. Kennedy being sworn in as president. "We won" the election, Nixon fumed, "but they stole it from us."

Smaller houses due to cost and energy?

How about interest rates and interest rates? We are almost back where we were when I bought my house at the height of the Carter economy.  They were only building spec houses here 1500 ft2 or less because interest rates were 18% on the average. Even at that it was hard to sell a house because unemployment was high and although price of the house was low (compared to today), monthly payments were through the roof because of the high bank rates.

BTW, Charleston is not a bubble town for home prices. Real estate prices there are high now, but they have always been high in that area.

Posted by: Vic at January 18, 2011 02:44 AM (M9Ie6)

7 I have to say that house sizes took off beginning in the early 80's in Connecticut and kept increasing steadily to McMansion territory ever since - along with prices. So much so, driving by new construction for the last decade or so I wondered who could afford just to heat the damned things. Apparently, not enough people.

8 Fair & Balanced panel on Fox just now discussing State bailouts.  The blue State guy throws out that old saw again about the blue States sending more money to the feds than they get back.

That BS has long been refuted.

9 I wondered who could afford just to heat the damned things.

CT has the double whammy on heating. Most people there use number 2 fuel oil for heating. Fuel oil prices have been going through the roof, and thanks to Obama are going to get even higher. So is natural gas.

I have gas logs in my fireplace in the living room. They are fed from a propane tank. 2 years ago the price of delivered propane went to over $4.00/gallon. I used to use the gas logs to assist the heat pump when outside temps dipped below 32. Not so much anymore.

23 #20  One thing about Palin is that she has courage,  notably lacking in the rest of the field.  Where were all of the other potential candidates speaking up for conservatives? The attack wasn't just on Palin,  but also on our right to criticize the government. All of tea party conservatives were trashed in the media's full-on assault to make Obama's numbers recover. Did we hear anyone of these guys defend us?

Crickets.

So,  I am left with the spectacle of an Alaskan housewife bearing the full force of the venom of the left and the press,  while a bunch of men headed for the tall weeds.  The only one I saw out speaking was weak-chinned and weak candidate Pawlenty,  who made sure everyone knew that HE wouldn't have made a map like that.

So,  if we have to pick someone who can stand up to Putin,  who are we left with?

A while back on the THC thread we were discussing the rules about historic buildings. Here's a new twist:

Lower Merion Officials Want To Save Their Signs

An effort is underway in Lower Merion to try to save several thousand historic street signs which have been a staple in the township for nearly 100 years.

The federal government wants communities to install larger, more reflective street signs to make it easier and safer for drivers. Lower Merion officials, however, say that unfunded mandate will destroy the character of the township and cost more than $1.5 million at a time when municipalities are struggling to keep their budgets tight.

Cities all over the country have been raising hell about this new mandate.  It is a prime example of what an uncontrolled bureaucracy will do.

This is another one of those things that you do or lose highway dollars on. And the bastards on SCOTUS have ruled that that is perfectly OK. What is even more disturbing was that it was a 7-2 decision in 1987 when the court was more liberal.

Heh!  PM David Cameron gaffes about health care.  The thing with gaffes, they usually have truth at the core:

David Cameron faced an embarrassing political row today after branding the NHS 'second rate' as he launched the biggest shake-up of the service in its history.

The remarks came during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme as he attempted to promote his flagship policy.

'I don't think we should put up with a second rate - with coming second best,' he said, quickly correcting himself. 'We should aim to be the best.'

During the announcement, the Prime Minister said that failure to modernise was draining resources away from the public sector.

In a keynote speech at the Royal Society of Arts in London, he dismissed suggestions that services could carry on as they were as 'a complete fiction'.

He said: 'Every year without modernisation the costs of our public services escalate.

'Demand rises, the chains of commands can grow, costs may go up, inefficiencies become more entrenched.

'Pretending that there is some "easy option" of sticking with the status quo and hoping that a little bit of extra money will smooth over the challenges is a complete fiction.

Representatives of the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Nursing joined forces to warn about the dangers of committing to greater competition between the health service and private companies.

In a letter to The Times, they said: 'There is clear evidence that price competition in healthcare is damaging.'

Yeah, it's a second rate system libtards!

Yeah, I wish we got it all the time but you have to buy the entire Encore package to get that one. Just another argument in favor of going to a "cafeteria" style cable/satellite programming method.

If they did that I would probably go down to the local stations plus ESPN, FNC, FBC, this one, and maybe a couple of others. Currently I am getting over a hundred channels with the mid package and the HD package. Out of that 100, 90 of them are shit.

43 Whoa! -- I hadn't noticed this at Drudge before:

NASA's Hansen prefers rule by decree to fight 'global warming'

November's election made it quite clear that the people of the United States do not want to radically change our society in the name of global warming. Pretty much every close House race went to the Republicans, while the Democrats won all the Senate squeakers. The difference? The House on June 26, 2009, passed a bill limiting carbon-dioxide emissions and getting into just about every aspect of our lives. The Senate did nothing of the sort.

The nation's most prominent publicly funded climatologist is officially angry about this, blaming democracy and citing the Chinese government as the "best hope" to save the world from global warming. He also wants an economic boycott of the U.S. sufficient to bend us to China's will.

NASA laboratory head James Hansen's anti-democracy rants were published while he was on a November junket in China, but they didn't get much attention until recently. On Jan. 12, the hyperprolific blogger Marc Morano put them on his Climate Depot site, and within hours, the post went viral. In a former life, Mr. Morano was chief global-warming researcher for Sen. James M. Inhofe, Oklahoma Republican.

Life's a beach for federal judges

AROUND THIS TIME of year, as shivering Philadelphians trudge over snow-covered ground, the U.S. Virgin Islands - with white, sandy beaches, turquoise waters and perpetual summer - seem like, well, paradise.

A little-known fact is that federal judges from the Philadelphia area are periodically dispatched there on the government's tab, often during the winter months, to preside over cases.

In fact, the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, headquartered here, is scheduled to speak tomorrow at a conference in St. Thomas.

A nice gig if you can get it, huh?

Local talk radio host Bob Durgin pulls no punches in wake of Arizona shootings

Local conservative talk radio host Bob Durgin hasnÂ’t pulled his on-air punches in the wake of SaturdayÂ’s shootings in Arizona, lambasting liberals for using the tragic event to slander conservatives like Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck.

“God, I hate the liberal media,” Durgin said Monday during his highly rated afternoon show on WHP580. “It’s like, if you don’t follow Obama and believe in Obama’s policies, then you are a potential terrorist.”

In talking about The New York Times, often seen as queen of the left by conservatives, Durgin added, “Somebody ought to burn that paper down. Just go to New York and blow that sucker right out of the water.”

Durgin now concedes that last remark may have been a bridge too far in an overheated environment.

“I don’t regret saying it, but I know I probably shouldn’t have,” he said this week during a telephone interview. “That’s just me. When I go on the air I announce my true feelings. What they hear is who I am.”

Just go to New York and blow that sucker right out of the water.” Durgin now concedes that last remark may have been a bridge too far in an overheated environment. Quite honestly, the saddest thing about the remark is that nobody took it to heart. I wonder why ours is so much higher here.

Anyway, unless you cut your own and have a forced air "buck" stove or equivalent heating with wood is more expensive than anything else. I tried using my fireplace when I first bought the house. Mine is an "custom" small fireplace insert that would not hold a stove.  Anytime I opened the damper and started a fire it drew more heat out of the house than it put in.

I quit using the thing until I got the gas logs which I run with the damper closed. (risking CO poisoning)

66 headline:

Mark Feldstein on the JFK never charged/prosecuted campaign break-in tanking Nixon, not surprising. That the story died so quickly might be surprising following Kennedy's election, but for his subsequent assassination when LBJ established the Official Myth to lay JFK to rest in Camelot.

Recently, Caroline and Maria just couldn't handle The Kennedy myth a la 2011 public broadcast v. the 1964 "traditional" legacy.  Now America is left with the impression that the tv series may have accurately exposed the "hurtful" truth. Sorry, but it isn't likely that the MSM/Hollywood would smear JFK/RFK with false accusations "because they could". Because obviously, they couldn't get away with telling the truth, let alone lies to implicate any Kennedy Family guilt.

btw, ace was complicit in revisionism the other day, "clearing" Joe Kennedy's reputation because someone told him there was nothing to historical record. As if there are no readily available research documents and books published regarding ol' Joe Kennedy as his own Irish/American organized crime top dog entrepreneur, whisky running amongst Kennedy's wealth amassing enterprises. Sure, as if Joe Kennedy were such a nice guy to his competitors, as if Joe Kennedy paid his full income taxes reporting his criminal activities, and as if Joe Kennedy weren't a Nazi supporting anti-semite. That was some online convoluted apathetic activism, again promoting Leftist purity via revisionism, as if to prove yourself a reasonable person. pff

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said on Tuesday he would order a government-wide review of regulations with the goal of eliminating those that hurt job creation and make the U.S. economy less competitive.

In an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, Obama said some government regulations have placed "unreasonable burdens on business -- burdens that have stifled innovation and have had a chilling effect on growth and jobs."

He said he would require that in the future government agencies "ensure that regulations protect our safety, health and environment while promoting economic growth."

I see that Barry is in full bullshit mode to try to get re-elected. And those government regulations that have place "unreasonable burdens" were put in place by him and his party.

73 The sidebar has a link to an article in the Washington Post last Friday titled "JFK's own dirty trick."  (no link since it's in the sidebar)  According to the story a disgruntled accountant told Kennedy's advisors that Howard Hughes had given Nixon's family $200,000. Kennedy's advisors knew if they could find evidence documenting this, friendly reporters would run the story, damaging Nixon.

The disgruntled accountant knew exactly where the evidence was, and days later "a break-in occurred" at the account's old office.

With the stolen evidence in hand, muckraking reporters Drew Pearson and Jack Anderson ran the story just days before the election--and Kennedy won by a razor-thin margin.

Here's the funny part: Even though this happened over 50 years ago, the author of the piece just cannot bring himself to say that the Kennedy group commissioned anyone to "steal" documents to swing the election. Instead here's the author's wrap-up paragraph:
Indeed, the mysterious break-in to recover Nixon's incriminating financial documents convinced him that such burglaries were standard practice in national politics. Nixon vowed that he would never be caught unprepared again...Ah. The purpose of the break-in, says the author, was merely to recover the incriminating documents.

Good thing the thieves didn't do it to actually, y'know, steal something.

Because stealing would clearly be wrong. Sort of like breaking into an office.

Whereas "recovering" something is so much more...friendly.

Okay, now for the twist: How many of you had heard of that event before now?

[crickets]

The lamestream media have always believed they could swing elections, and their success in 1960 certainly reinforced that idea. And even 50 years later leftoids still can't honestly describe what they did back then.

An equal success is their ability to ignore this story for 50 years.

Rat-bastards, all of 'em.

Yeah, well, the example cited by the administration according to Fox News is that there are different emission regulations for California and the rest of the country. Clearly, this is inefficient and an unreasonable burden on the car companies. We can fix this by aligning the rest of the country with California's regulations.

Were we adults during the Kennedy/Nixon potus campaign, we'd be aware of the exposure/smear since the media published the Nixon/Hughes story prior to the election vote.

Anyone know what the campaign contribution laws were that year? Was it illegal or merely unseemly that Hughes would be contributing v. Kennedy as many ways as he did to fund Nixon's campaign?

78 @55 Wood's cheapest for us, because we get wood free. We have a little wood stove, nothing fancy, picked it up at Menards for 450$ a few years ago.We have a long house, the stove is at the east end, and we use a bow fan to blow upstream to the west end. Works great, for us, unless it is REALLY cold(ten or below) . Then we supplement with propane.

Hence, a burglary to prove that Nixon's campaign was legally funded somehow smeared Nixon's campaign to be illegitimate.

But we're to "remember" that Joe Kennedy, Sr. was such a nice good guy.

I'd read research chronicling the business dealings of Joe Kennedy and Howard Hughes, aligned or at opposites.

We should recall that Pre-WWII, lacking the necessary political connections, Hughes attempted to sell the US Military his Zero, only to be rebuffed as the US purchased an inferior design instead for our national defense. But Japan was interested. And the rest is history.

74  The problem is this: sure, the despots are very odious to anyone who cherishes freedom, and we'd all like to see more free, open societies.  However, there's a very real threat that most of these ME despots will be replaced with Muslim Brotherhood fanatics and Islamic hardliners.  AQ and the MB have been very up front with their desire to not only topple the West but to also topple every government in Islamic countries and place them under a new caliphate that will be characterized by its "purity".

It's like watching the old communist revolutions, but if anything these might be worse.

91 Independent schools failing 'duty' to run academies

"Independent schools have failed to meet their "responsibilities" to help improve state schools, Lord Adonis, the original architect of the academies programme claims.
The former Labour minister accused many heads and governors of “carping” on the sidelines rather than getting involved.
He accused the private sector in general of failing to seize a 'one in a lifetime opportunity' to bridge the divide with state schools."

In Great Britain, private schools are apparently the only functional school systems left.
So what do they do?

They have burdened the private school system with the task of fixing the failed public school system.
And then blame them for not fixing a problem they never created.

102 #20  One thing about Palin is that she has courage,  notably lacking in the rest of the field.  Where were all of the other potential candidates speaking up for conservatives? The attack wasn't just on Palin,  but also on our right to criticize the government. All of tea party conservatives were trashed in the media's full-on assault to make Obama's numbers recover. Did we hear anyone of these guys defend us?

Crickets.

I'll give credit where it's due.  Lamar Alexander gave a one-sentence defense of Sarah during a TV interview.  It wasn't lengthy, but it was something.  As for Pawlenty, he got such awful feedback from that "target" remark, he did a head-snapping 180 and said a couple weak-tea things.
