Far fewer Europeans own cars than we here in the US. Plus, they have had over`150 years of slowly adding to their rail system. We do not have the rail system here to produce trains which would beconvenient alternatives...partyly due to the distances involved and partly due to the loss of right-of-way and existing tracks when so many railroads went out of business back in the 70's and 80's.
It's a pipe dream. But they keep sticking to it because they can't think of anything new.

Which, of course, is why trains are a sensible alternative there. If we had $10 dollar gas, the whole American way of life would collapse. Government loves mass transit - because it densifies people into masses, and puts their transportation under government control. For some reason the statists love nothing more than to jam lots of folks tightly together - dense transportation, dense housing, and dense ranks of people in their torch-light rallies. It's one of many ways the state works to bring about the commoditization of humanity, and to induce the "herd poisoning" that Huxley wrote about.

1. A nation of proletariat concentrated in large urban areas of squalor, all voting for the ONE Party. Transportation in that urban area limited to overcrowded buses and subways; except for the apparatchiks of course.
2. The country side is dedicated to "green" patches and large corporate farms. Of course those farms will be controlled by the apparatchiks who will tell them what and how much to grow according to the 5 year plan.
3. Transportation between the large urban areas will be provided by the trains. However, since the nation as a whole will have limited funds for this due to a stagnant economy, travel between towns will be limited to few occasions and rationed according to need. That is except for the apparatchiks.
4. Cars will be eliminated except for a few limousines and police/fire vehicles.
The apparatchiks will all tout the robust economy, the green living conditions, and the overall health and happiness of the "people". All this while living in polluted squalor, in overcrowded urban tenements, starving, and dieing like flies.
Now that last part may not be their "vision", but it is exactly what their dreams of a "communist" utopia always lead to.

Just an addendum:
The Dems myopia about trains is endemic of their hatred for suburbia. The suburbs are the opposite of their ideal, crammed together, herd world.
Just look at how suburbia is generally portrayed in movies: the people that reside there live dull, soul-less existences, and are generally evil, hypocritical people.

The hope is that a high-speed rail between, let's say, Orlando and Miami, will better facilitate and expand tourism, making it easier, more convenient and less expensive for families to visit tourist attractions in both areas, instead of just one area while they are down here on their vacations. It will be built more for the benefit of tourists from out of state than for this state's residents. More hope and change.

Here's the problems:
1. So what do you do when you get to the other side? You'll have to rent a car unless your destination is really close to the train station (unlikely). Most FL cities have sucktacular public transportation
b. What happens when Disney, Lakeland, Plant City etc wants a stop? Suddenly, travel time is a lot longer and you still have to deal with problem 1.It would be quicker to drive
iii. When it becomes quicker and more convenient to drive, people will do just that, and then the taxpayers of Floriduh get stuck with supporting a fiscal black hole.
Wouldn't it be better to just widen I-4 and make express lanes from Tampa to Orlando to cut travel time?

Brian, people don't ride trains if they don't have any reason to get on them; if you don't have the money to go on trips, go shopping; if you don't have a job to go to at the end of that line -- then you don't ride the rails.
I wouldn't so much have a problem with working on our nation's rail structure -- as part of an infrastructure plan (it would provide some jobs) -- I think eventually it may be a benefit to do so (not so sure about high speed, but at least our rail system), but I'm not so naive as to think it will turn our economy around. That's the sort of stuff that needs to be worked on when the coffers are healthy, not on their death bed. As such it might be better to turn it over to private industry -- which doesn't seem so interested in it, probably because it won't make money.

Jane, I'm not a fan of high-speed passenger rail, particularly in states such as Florida where we love our cars as much as Californian's love theirs. However, the need to invest in the nation's freight rail infrastructure cannot be over-stated.
I am a huge fan of trucks, and work with trucking companies every day, but they are facing enormous obstacles at the same time that both the population and the consumer market are growing. Rails cannot deliver to the dock of most distributors or retailer and trucks cannot deliver the long-haul efficiently. These two industries spent years antagonizing one another but have come to the conclusion these last few years that the two working together create a very effective service solution. However, the opportunity to grow to the level that supports freight demand is damned near capped for each.
When most folks think of rail, the big lumbering trains full of coal or phosphate are what come to mind, but the real synergies are in intermodal. Yet, a conversion of even 10% of all OTR freight to intermodal would likely bring the system to a screeching halt. Prices would rise substantially due to the laws of supply and demand.
I am a big believer in private rather than public investment but the rails have stood, essentially, on their own until the last few years while the trucking industry benefited from public infrastructure investment.
The time to invest is before the suffering begins, and with fuel rising and driver shortages already on the horizon, I would argue that now is the time to get started.

1. Most importantly, get the government totally out of trains. That means no subsidies and no regulations, other than limited and very defined safety regulations.
2. Next, get the unions out of the trains. This is what destroyed the trains to begin with.
After that, the train system will recover itself.
As for "investing" in rails, since the train companies own the rails, there should be zero public dollars going into that.

Yahoo has struggled to contain costs and jumpstart revenue growth while bleeding traffic to competitors such as Google and Facebook. It now ties up with Microsoft on search, hoping to keep a lid on expenses.
The company reported its third consecutive quarter of declining page views on its websites two years into the tenure of CEO Carol Bartz, who took over to try to revive its fortunes.
Maybe after she's done running Yahoo into the ground Barry will make her an economic advisor. It just serves Yahoo right. It has made an all out move to the left and the douches who are their political reporters are nothing but Barry cheerleaders.

Forcing people back into the cities is part of the socialist plan. High speed trains don't stop anywhere except urban centers. You can't park in urban centers so how to you get there in the first place? The socialists love this city center stuff. They hate the 'burbs. Private property breeds republicans.

We will win the future by going gangbusters balls to the wall developing the largest electricity production the world has ever known. Electricity is the great quality of life equalizer. It makes life comfortable for people like me. It would make the quality of life exponetially better for everyone in the world if it were more readily available. Hence, Al Gore is working as hard as he can to deny it to as many people as possible. I heard nuclear power mentioned in the speech last night in the same breath as clean energy. Even my limited knowledge of science caused me to realize that electric cars would require massive improvements to our energy production and delivery. Compare being poor without electricity and being "poor" with it.

LOL thanks for the laugh. The story behind that obese cocksucker making an absolute fool of himself at Redford's massive circle jerk is funny enough; but then you get to the comments about him that have all the intellectual content of a bunch of skanks talking about shoes. Or that fat fuck Roger Egbert opening his diseased pie-hole.
Kevin Smith hasn't made a decent movie ever. I laughed my ass off when I first saw Clerks but then re-watched it and found myself getting embarrassed at how lame it was. Chasing Amy was pretty good at the beginning but then Ben Affleck became a clueless dumbass (good casting for that) and the movie dissolved in a vat of dumbfuckery. Dogma was just horrible garbage that made Chris Rock unfunny, which I thought was impossible. I refused to waste any more time on any output from that fat turd after that.
