Beanervt and I were discussing this Winter on the ONT. They are once again predicting more snow here. The last three Winters have set new records in the U.S. and Europe.
This one looks like it is gearing up to be even worse. As we were saying, it looks like it is time to stock up and be prepared to hunker down. It looks like a real barn-burner cold is on the way.

construction of new mini-modular nuclear reactors
Before you ask, I donÂ’t know a whole lot about the design and operation of these things. Perhaps I will do some research today and see what I can find out and provide a preliminary evaluation.

Yeah, Bush had some signing statements but NEVER and outright "screw you" to congress on a plain prohibition. So screw you idiots on panel.
As I recall they tried to get up an impeachment against Reagan over Nicaragua and congressional prohibitions.

What unmitigated gall from Harry asshole
He has activated a Senate rule to make the day longer than 24 hours so he can try to ram through his nuclear option. GD the union asskissing voters in NV.On the opening day of the 112th Congress on Wednesday, Senate Democratic leaders used a rare procedural rule that will keep the legislative day open for several days — a move that would allow for rule changes with the approval of a simple majority of the 100-member chamber instead of the usual two-thirds vote.

Vic, the Eddiebear link I put in the sidebar expresses my feelings on this topic well.
In addition to the obvious health issues that arise from people choosing to forego vaccines, as the dad of an autistic child, the millions upon millions of dollars wasted in continuing studies of this non-issue pisses me off to no end.

They get buried and need no cooling water and go for 30 years or more... and produce electricity for about 5 cents a kilowatt hour.
No need for massive infrastructure upgrades either! Just plug-in to the grid as needed. Charge your electric car all night for pennies.
Some of them are even designed to use existing nuclear plant waste.

Hey, I got a reminder from the Yahoo Pick 'em league thing. Obviously, regular season is over but there's a way to continue to the playoffs if the commissioner sets it up.
The other NFL playoffs thingy is from NFL network or some such. I'd rather not sign up for that. Any interest in continuing the already set up Yahoo leagues?

My major heartache on this kind of shit is reserved for the MFM, including Fox. I realize that from time to time there will ne charlatans and crooks pushing some kind of an agenda.
The charlatans are usually in it to harm evil "big business" and the crooks are in it to make a buck. The media takes their bogus study and prints it like it was smoking hot gospel come down from on high engraved in stone. They generate hysterical headlines and phony sob stories for days and demand that the "politicians" do something.
None of these assholes know the first thing about any kind of science and they make no effort to find someone to interview who knows anything about the issue at all.
After all, if it is anti-business it must be true right?
What is doubly shitty is those lying assholes are protected by the liberal courts even when their lies cause people to go bankrupt as in the phony alar scare.
Just more evidence that the "free press" and the judicial system in this country are epic fail.

It shouldn't be left unstated, though, that Brian Deer, the author of the piece referred to in the links, is an investigative reporter in the UK. He's the one primarily responsible for bringing down Wakefield and has been on this target for years. Every rule has an exception, I guess.

Aristotle liked the genus/species form of definition. He called Man a "rational animal." Plato insisted that his earlier version, "featherless biped," was sufficient. So one day, a couple of A's students went to the wall of Plato's grove, the Academy, plucked a chicken, and threw it over, letting the res, as it were, loquitur. Nobody does philosophy like that any more.

I think autism is a gene (or something in the brain) that is triggered by high levels of stress in the baby.
When I was pregnant I read everything about it, and the one repeating fact was the autistic child threw a fit, screamed, had to be held down for the shot. I don't think the vaccine triggers it. I think the stress from the shot does.
Like most problems that occur in the brain, I think it is caused by stress. That would explain why some kids have autism without ever being vaccinated.

WASHINGTON – Republicans have already violated some of the vows they made in taking stewardship of the House
Their pledge to cut $100 billion from the budget in one year won't be kept.
And for a coming vote seeking to repeal the health care overhaul, the first major initiative of the new Congress, lawmakers won't be allowed to propose changes to the legislation despite Republican promises to end such heavy-handed tactics from the days of Democratic control.
The good old AP once again passing off a liberal opinion piece as a news story

I wonder when the people who listen to this garbage are going to realize that the so-called "progressives" who preach this kind of bullshit have no interest in actual progress. They should be "REgressives," because that's where they want to take us; back in time. None of that agribusiness produced meat and produce! You've got to eat locally grown organic foods that are ten times more expensive for half the quantity. People deserting your city in search of work? Forget about promoting business friendly policies. Just shrink the size of the city! Roads falling into disrepair? No no no, don't bother with reassessing your spending policies to ensure there's money in the budget to fix up the infrastructure. Just tear up the tarmac and let 'em go back to dirt! Everything was so much better when all we had was dirt roads, remember?

B&W PR site
NRC pre-application design review
It doesn't appear that there is anything really super-groundbreaking in this design. There are interesting twists in the use of some of the systems.
1. They are building the entire primary section of the unit subgrade. That has some advantages and it has some disadvantages. It makes the required containment construction simpler and probably cheaper, but it also has its own unique safety issues such as inadvertent flooding and personal safety from atmospheric issues.
2. They are using a PWR fuel design but operating without soluble boron in the moderator like a BWR. They do this by using what is known as a burnable poison actually designed into the fuel matrix. Removal of boron from the primary coolant simplifies a lot of the overall design with attendant cost savings. It does however cause other issues in fuel design and costs. (nothing is ever free folks).
3. It uses the B&W once through S/Gs which have the unique ability to provide superheat. That makes for a more efficient system and also a simpler design in the secondary. They do though have significant issues that have posed problems in the past. A loss of secondary feedwater event for this type of S/G is much more significant than the U-tube type design. This is what actually led to the event at Three Mile Island. In additon, they are using the S/G as an integral attachment to the Rx Pressure vessel in a manner I am not able to exactly determine from the literature.
4. They say that the core will be removed as a single unit for refueling. However it looks like the S/G will have to be removed in order to get to the core. I can see huge problems there over time.
5. The cores are designed to be 125MWe each with the intent that at least two of these will be used per site and as many as 6 (if you want what the standard Westinghouse AP1000 puts out. Two of these at 125MW will be cheaper to build but conversely you only get 250MW of generation. That is what you get from a standard IC Turbine on a skid now.
6. I gather that the majority of the cost savings are supposed to be in the smaller design allowing smaller plants unless you want to get a lot by building a 6 unit site which will probably cost as much as the AP1000.
And that is the crux of the matter. Utilities have tried multi-unit sites before with "shared" personnel between the units. it does not work well with the regulators, particularly with Operations and emergency personnel.
Even with the other personnel such as maintenance, engineering, and health physics there are periods when you run into problems. This usually means that it works out that there are no cost savings because you wind up with huge staffs as if you had multiple independent plants.
As for Chitown's remarks about 5 cents per KW/hr first off, that is hugely expensive. My last plant was running 1.3 cents on a rolling 3 year average. However, thee is nothing in this documentation that I see that even tries to estimate costs.
As for using waste to operate, that is a pipe dream.
BTW, I went through some of the "design documents" on the NRC site but so much as been redacted due to "patent concerns" it is hard to get much from them.
As an overall comment I will say that there may be some uses for these things in specialized settings but I don't see utilities climbing all over them in the future unless the vendors can get the NRC to give ground on the "shared resources" issues. And that, I don't see happening because there ARE legitimate concerns there that should not be blown off.

Yeah, okay. They should just DO THAT then. While they're at it, they should also make their apps easily factor large primes and solve P=NP.
