Alabama's Jefferson County filed for bankruptcy court protection on Wednesday in the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

This county, the home of Birmingham, has been on the verge of bankruptcy for a while. Their plight began in a deal to improve the city and countyÂ’s sewer system.  The diverting of funds and corruption in this project was so great that the black Democrat mayor actually went to jail for 15 years, along with a LOT of his Democrat cronies. I guess when you are such crook as this to cause your county and city to go bankrupt even shielding by blackdemocratium is not enough. Following all the evidence of corruption the credit rating fell out the bottom which then cascaded the debt.  Gee, doesnÂ’t that sound familiar?

He was actually cruising right along and having a kickass performance, up until that one. Hell, he even started off nailing the question, but his second hour sleepiness kicked in and he went off the rails, right on cue. Of course, none will remember anything about the debate but for the horrific 53 seconds

Conservatives organize to defeat Romney (from the Hill)

A coalition of conservatives is working to organize the disparate groups opposing Mitt Romney as the Republican presidential nominee.

The new coalition is seeking to push back against the narrative that Romney is the “inevitable nominee," according to spokesman and activist Ali Akbar.

The group's website NotMittRomney.com launched this week. Akbar said that although the group is open to becoming a political action committee in the future, right now they are focused on becoming an online gathering place for the anti-Romney movement.

Worse yet, thanks to multiple rulings by the Federal Labor Relations Authority, taxpayers are forced to pay these salaries and benefits even if the employees are "visiting, phoning and writing to Congress in support of legislation" supported by their unions. And remember, Congress sets pay and benefit levels for career civil servants, who are not allowed under federal law to negotiate compensation levels. Since it seems safe to assume that such lobbying is never on behalf of reducing civil service pay and benefits, the taxpayers are effectively being forced to fund government workers as they lobby to increase government spending.

I gather that is the infamous NLRB. The last I heard it is illegal for government workers to lobby congress, so why is it legal for government worker union reps (who also work for the gov) to do the same thing?

It is time to eliminate the NLRB and repeal all labor acts that have been enacted since commie FDR assumed near dictatorial powers.

That poll pretty much reflects my view, if you swap Mutt Romney with Perry. Well, it overstates RON PAUL!!11!!'s strength, but you get the general idea.

I'm sure Our Betters among the punditry, which is all in for The Mutt, will go on and on (and on, and on) about how Perry torpedoed himself with his 53-second "gaffe," but I say (slipping into Noo Yawk-ese): skroom.

The biggest gaffe committed in the country's entire history was buying the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure's jive and putting him in the White House. If Perry flubs a debate answer, I don't care. I care about what he believes, and what he has done.

Perry's gaffe just makes him human. I've seen more comments in his defense thanks to the fact that what happened to him has happened to every single one of us. I find it reasuring that he doesn't have to make decisions on the spur of the moment.

I got that too, and liked it a lot. Self-deprecating humor - done well - is something most politicians can't do well to save their lives (and most are too egotistical to do it even if they could), but given the public's view of nearly all politicians right now, it should sit well with them to see a guy who is willing to laugh at himself when he flubs one.

I think last night was the best of the short answer formatted debate by far.  All the candidates made their best showing as far as I can tell.  Perry's cramp was the only downer part.

Even Michelle was en fuego.  I like debates where the candidates are beating on the SCoaMF rather then each other.

Just watched the Jon Stewart take-down of Corzine posted at the side-bar. The unspoken lesson the Democrats learn from this: We need more regulation, government needs more control over Wall Street, democrats can fix the problem.

Although I agree with Stewart in this one that Corzine is a dirtbag, Stewart's schtick is tired and predictable, not always keys to good comedy. His mugging has devolved into a non-verbal version of that cockroach Bill Maher's clap lines.

As I say, I will vote for either Newt or Herman, but is it out of line to ask why Newt lobbied for Fannie and Freddie? I don't think so. Voters come away with nothing "new" from last night's repeated exercise. From the comments here, no one's mind was changed. Everyone is still supporting whoever they already supported. I'll qualify "decent performance" limited to the candidate who not only answered the directed questions while smackin' down the moderating asshat's haughty attitude, but the candidate who revealed congressional legislative prowess. Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul both knocked Maria out of the park. Together, those two candidates demolish the Democrat-socialist opposition. I'd pay money to support their combo ticket, each keeping the other on the straight and narrow while together blasting through squalid corruption's mechanization. Interesting times with the best brains, combining one that's permeated by the US Constitution and the other an absolutely brilliant tactician. If those two won the White House together, America would actually improve imo. Btw, the other night, Newt used Paul's Galveston healthcare model as a success for America to replicate locally.

197 I tend to watch a Lehigh Valley (Pennsylvania) news station in the morning as opposed to Philadelphia's which tend to get hysterical over nothing. I was looking for video footage of 'rioting' but all I saw was an overturned van and a bunch of students in the streets. Students gathering in the streets is no big deal up there, considering how many thousands live on and off campus and the way the town is set up.

I saw the van overturn, a car trashed, police in riot gear using pepper spray, and mobs of kids running through the streets.  And they all looked like students, not imported trouble makers.  A person was arrested (it should have been more imho) and one or two were taken to the hospital injured from thrown projectiles.  It was a disgrace. 

I guess we should be grateful that at least they didn't set anything on fire -- have Penn State students learned the secret of fire yet, anyway? 

As for the state support, I checked their budget.  They receive 14% of their general operating budget from state appropriations and less than 10% of their overall budget from the state.  That's a little low, even for a Research I institution.  I assume their football program and foundation (fundraising operation) are making up the difference.

199 Paterno's problem, General, is that he testified under oath that he was told Sandusky was "fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy."  It was the two guys who got indicted for perjury who were using the much milder "horsing around" stuff (which was found to be not credible).  So if Paterno tries to adopt that language now, he essentially be saying he perjured himself to the grand jury. 

Paterno already knew from the 1998 incident that Sandusky had a problem with young boys, one that was serious enough to lead to a formal police investigation even if the DA declined to prosecute.  So his radar should have gone off the second he heard that Sandusky was showering alone with a young boy. 

Second, because Sandusky was not in Paterno's employ, he really can't hide behind HR rules.  You have to ask yourself, had Sandusky been a stranger to campus who was found acting inappropriately with a young boy (not a Penn State student) would that also have been handled internally?  Of course not.  PSU can't hide behind Sandusky's status as an emeritus employee to act like this was an HR matter.  It was a police matter. 

Third, given Sandusky had previously (in 199 been investigated by campus police and not prosecuted, the idea that it would have been some sort of over-reaction to call them in 2002 (as if it would have destroyed Sandusky's life or violated his rights in some way, which seems to be what this HR speak is implying) doesn't hold water. 

Paterno blew it, morally and I think legally too.  I think the reason they aren't going after him or McQueary is that they need them to make their case since they don't have victim #8 yet.

Look, my husband and I've been in and around higher ed our entire adult lives and he's been at a very high level in administration for a decade, including in compliance.  Penn State's handling of this is not 'normal.'  It's a function of a very (overly) powerful football coach and a lot of administrators who, frankly, were in their jobs for far too long.  After about a decade at a position in higher ed (or any large organization) you hit diminishing returns.  People stop questioning the system, everyone loses perspective, and behaviors become too entrenched.

It angers me that higher ed is going to take another black eye over this horrible incident.  The Big "10" and the association of Land Grant universities should get in front of this and make it clear that PSU's handling of this is an aberration.

BTW, I read yesterday that they are looking into whether or not PSU violated federal laws in not reporting the rape. 

204 If you ever think your vote doesn't matter.  It truly really does.  I've been waiting for two days for them to declare a winner in the nassau county, new york legislature race in the 19th district.  They finally did, the republican won.  He had 6,040 votes and his challenger, the woman who promised to side with the unions and raise your property taxes so as not to cut services, got 6,003.  The results have been up there but the winner hadn't been declared until this morning.  He won, the republican, Robert Germino, jr. won, by 37 votes.

I haunted anyone I knew in that district who was a registered republican to go and vote.  They all whined and said "it's a small local election, it doesn't matter" and I was a freakin pain in the ass.  I think many went to vote to get me off their email, twitter and answering machine.  but hey, it was all worth the little bit of effort on my part.  I don't vote there but I saw how the dem machine was working and didn't like what I saw.  You guys said "get involved" so I did and I'm really glad now that I did.

30 is not to old for Army or Marine infantry training.  If you are going to do something do it right.  The teenagers recover faster, but the older guys have the willpower and maturity.  I commanded an Army infantry basic training company and I really liked having older recruits.  By the way, one of my men on my last tour in A-Stan was from Canada.  He got his citizenship while we were over there.  He was my gunner and the team medic.  One last thing, if you are dead set on the Air Force type of thing, go to both the Air Guard and Air Reserve recruiters and see who will give you a RAVEN slot.  That is much better than being regular Security Police.  The RAVEN teams are the ones that fly with the planes all over the world and provide local security on the ground.  You get to see the world and maybe have some excitement, not just check ID at the front gate.  RLTW!

The way things are looking, it may end up taking out the entire Penn State athletic department, any coaches who ever worked for the football team, the entire administration, Second Mile, and possibly a ton of high-end boosters who were also connected with Second Mile.

The reason this could be a nuclear blast is that, by my understanding, Second Mile was "unofficially" connected with Penn State but a lot of people associated with the football program were expected to give time and money to it.

If Second Mile is exposed as a cover for a child prostitution ring, they may as well burn the university to the ground and salt the Earth around the ashes.

Sorry my dear Perrykrishnas, but this is make-believe. That one isolated incident isnt the problem, but its just one moment in a line of gruesome debate performances. I watched the debate yesterday with two friends, who are on the Perry bandwagon and everytime the moderators asked Perry questions the two tensed. Look at the live-blogging yesterday and look at the reaction of Perry supporters to the blackout and you know pretty well that this is something bigger than just a gaffe and that you actually expected it. This not damaging because of the blackout itself, but because Perry is creating a negative narrative about himself, which is the same narrative Bush had to fight and this when nothing is more important for the current Governor of Texas than to make clear that he is not W.

I start with that show at 6 AM first on radio, then NESN TV usually for sports/background noise, (they're relatively conservative for sports media) as I intertube and that segment had me reaching for the rewind on my remote.
