The comments on the article are just plain sad. Yeah, I know NRO is the home of detached, tea-sipping Limousine Republicans and all that, but the readers are slamming Sowell because he doesn't love him some Mutt Romney, the "electable" candidate.

This election season is totally screwed. We are eating our own when they don't do exactly what we want, the way we want or misspeak, while Osama Obama, that stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure, places Hawaii in Asia and wraps himself in treason.

Right now, it seems we'll either get four more years with an America-hating, corrupt, totalitarian liberal or four years with a non-America-hating, maybe-not-corrupt big-government liberal Republican. Not, IMO, a real great choice.

I actually have an FHA mortgage, to my shame. I _had_ to buy a house last year after my landlord sold my apartment building. I only had about 5% to put down on a modest house. However, I pay extra on the premium each month and even more when I receive my tax refund.

If the government was smaller and not involved in every aspect of finance, there would be a market at the banks for someone like me, who has a great credit score and a good job. Now, since Uncle Sugar does it, no one else will.

Regardless of age, not every person's body ends up in the hospital with a catastrophic illness, emergency surgery, or scheduled procedure. Most don't, regardless of age.

The entire '08 campaign argument by politicians was to enable AFFORDABLE health care, and the insurance system will never permit that. The reason that medical treatment is so inordinately expensive is BECAUSE OF THE INSURANCE SCAM.

Cash cows? That's putting it nicely. All humans need is to empower that industry to bleed us dry. They take our policy payments but play the waiting game in actually covering the costs of care, preferring that we keel over dead. Meanwhile hospitals and doctors demand payment using debt collectors to get theirs, despite all the proper forms timely provided in advance.

Anyone who's had to fight the insurance industry to actually pay for policy coverage knows that you don't even get what you paid for from that den of vipers without fighting tooth and nail over a period of years while the policy holder is forced to endure excessive stress at the very point when the body and mind require peace and tranquility in order to heal, complications resulting that only exacerbate problems.

First, that's not begging the question.  Begging the question means to presume the truth of an underlying assumption in an argument.  Rangel is too stupid to formulate an argument, and he is making no underlying assumptions, true or otherwise.  Thus, he is not begging the question.

Second, yes, that's exactly what it means, they are going to be allowed to protest during the day and then they will have to leave at night.  The shouldn't even be protesting during the day in groups that size without a permit because the city should be afforded an opportunity to provide sanitation, fire and safety protection for those around the event, even if the protestors themselves don't want anything from The Man.  Why is this a concern to Rangel?  Since when is being reasonable given the circumstances a concern?

Which is why Ryan's plan to privatize Medicare would never work.  No insurance company will insure a 75 yr old for $12,000 per year premium - much less an 80 or 90 yr old.

And almost any company will gladly insure the 65 yr olds for $12,000 - especially ones that have no pre-existing conditions and are on few/cheap meds.

Insurance companies are out to make a profit - pure and simple.  They don't provide ANY health care - none.  And they could give a flying f*ck whether you live or die as long as they can come out on top before you do kick the bucket.

Replace large battery banks? No utility that I am familiar with uses large battery banks for power storage. They use them for emergency power for instrumentation and that's about it.

Some utilities use a pumping station to pump large volumes of water up a hill to lake during the night and then release it to hydro generators during peak hours. But even that is very inefficient.

The only use I have seen for flywheels in an electrical situation was for very sensitive electronic equipment and stabilizing the voltage and current. And even that was eventaully abandoned as unworkable and replaced with a battery backup and an inverter..

ABC News has learned authorities are increasingly concerned that a man sought in connection with a bizarre shooting incident on the Washington Mall last week may pose a threat to President Obama.

The Secret Service now suspects that a bullet fired in this incident may have hit the White House after a bullet round was found in a White House window, though the round had not yet been conclusively linked to the incident.

Police believe the suspect, Oscar Ramiro Ortega of Idaho, is mentally ill. Ortega has an extensive record, ranging from domestic violence to drug charges. Sources say a police investigation has uncovered evidence suggesting Ortega has a fixation on the White House.

I'm sure the Secret Service is working "Fast and Furious" on this.

Two months ago, the Politico-GWU Battleground Poll showed Rick Perry clearly ahead in the race for the GOP presidential nomination with 36 percent support. Mitt Romney came in a distant  second with 17 percent support, and Reps. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., and Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, were tied for third with 10 percent support.

Back then, Herman Cain was an afterthought, polling at 4 percent, ahead of only Jon Huntsman.

But the newest Battleground Poll released today shows a 24-point drop in support for Perry and a 23-point gain for Cain. The former GodfatherÂ’s Pizza CEO comes in first this time around with 27 percent of the Republican vote, and Mitt Romney follows close behind at 25 percent support. CainÂ’s two-point lead is well within the three percentage point margin of error. But heÂ’s certainly far ahead of Perry and Newt Gingrich, who are both tied for third place with 14 percent of the vote, and Paul, who polled just behind them with 10 percent support.

Perry might glean at least a bit of good news in the numbers. A state-by-state breakdown in California, Florida, Texas and New York—the nation’s largest states—shows Perry leading Cain in Texas and California, and leading Romney in Texas, California and Florida. In the rest of the country, however, Perry only garners 8 percent of the vote, behind Cain, Romney and Gingrich.
