— andy Friday!
Looks like Congress tucked a temporary (read election year) reprieve of the light bulb ban into the budget bill. Of course that does nothing to restore the jobs lost, because nearly* all the manufacturing has already moved overseas.
There's not a whole lot the government can do to create jobs, but there's a hell of a lot it can do to destroy them.
* OK, my bad. There's a small plant in S.C. that employed 15 workers making them as late as last March. Down from 50. That's -35 jobs saved! in Obamamath.
An incandescent bulb may burn for 750 to 2,500 hours, while a compact fluorescent can last up to 10,000 hours, according to the Energy Department. (emphasis added)
Can last up to 10,000 hours. Can. But in practice they don't really last appreciably longer than the incandescents now, do they? Certainly not enough to justify the much higher price, even when factoring in the decreased energy use. Keep on spinning, DOE.

Fox's take on the debates. I gather the main theme was electability
I did note this item quoted from Newt:
Called "dangerous," "ridiculous," and "outrageous" by the attorneys general, Gingrich asked whether the two lawyers questioned Thomas Jefferson's decision to abolish 18 of 35 federal judges. He defended his proposal by quoting Jefferson: "Is the Supreme Court supreme? That is absurd, that would be an oligarchy."
There is one thing, Newt does know History. What he is talking about here is Jefferson firing a bunch of the midnight appointments of Federalist judges by Adams who was trying to assure continued Federalist dominance even though they had been wiped out during the elections. Too bad he could not do anything about John Marshall but ignore him.
Of course the Fox pundits donÂ’t like GingrichÂ’s comments. They are quoting a lot of other stuff he said.

I say worthless because nowhere in the entire article is any mention of what the “deal” was. All the article did was spew anti-Republican crap based on bogus polls that said the “public” blamed Republicans for the “grid lock”. Gee imagine that, every news organization in the country except one spews the Democrat Party line on budget shit and the “public” now blames Republicans. I’ll try to find out more on what the “deal” was later. I’m sure we were “sold down the river” as the old saying goes.

Our wonderful (and apolitical) DOJ civil rights division issues scathing report on Sheriff Joe (WT via Drudge)
Why a report? Most likely because this is the civil rights division which is a “civil” function and also because he has broken no laws. This is a pure political move. After 3 years of witch hunting all they’ve got is a report? I guess we will have to wait and see. The title of the column says the report says he “violated federal law”. When will the charges be made?
Personally I think this section of the DOJ should be abolished. State sanctioned discrimination of the type this panel was supposed to combat no longer exists in this country and hasn’t existed for decades upon decades. What we do have is State sanction discrimination against people of “non-color”. But of course, according to this DOJ that is not the purpose of this panel. Only blacks can be victims of discrimination.
This, like the labor panel, when it is capable of blatant thumb in your eye violation of the intent and wording of the law when a communist administration is in power it should be abolished. It gives an unlawful government too much power.

Michelle O. flies out to Hawaii without Obama
Why are we paying for her to have a vacation jaunt to Hawaii? It is not her home which is in Chicago and she is not going on a government function trip. This shit needs to end NOW!
How about this little winner from the WP (via Drudge for this)
In both of his first two years in office, Obama briefly delayed his vacation to remain in Washington while Congress completed its business.
Delayed his vacation???? He you assholes, when is he not on vacation? So he has to delay his slacking off because there is “political work” to do. I am surprised reporters and editors from the WP can breath when they have their heads stuck so far up Obama’s ass.

Military given go-ahead to detain US terrorist suspects without trial
Barack Obama has abandoned a commitment to veto a new security law that allows the military to indefinitely detain without trial American terrorism suspects arrested on US soil who could then be shipped to Guantánamo Bay.

It blocks spending on enforcing the energy standards. I am not sure how that would work. It doesnÂ’t reverse the regulation, it just prevents them from enforcing it. What will companies do since the law says canÂ’t do it??? In any case, this will likely get amended out in the Senate.

Since the Republicans caved on blocking the EPA crap they are getting ready to go forward
This article from the Democrat PR rag talks about rules for Hg and Ozone but doesnÂ’t mention CO2 at all which is also in these regulations. And I like this little gem they published for the EPA.
EPA says the rules will prevent up 17,000 premature deaths, 11,000 heart attacks and 120,000 asthma attacks annually.
I would dearly love to see the calculations for this load of crap audited by someone who knows about this shit. Based on past EPA calculations I would say the papers are probably covered with a brown nutty substance similar to chunky Peter Pan peanut butter because it was pulled out of some radical greenÂ’s asshole.

The Democrats want this bill so that should be enough said alone. But this is a two-fer for them. Pays off cronies and it gives more government control. It allows the government to shutdown any website it has received an “accusation” of piracy on without ANY due process at all.
Imagine the potential for abuse here from the Obamanites! Get a scathing article on Fast and Furious from a conservative blog. No problem, have some Moby file a copyright infringement protest. Instant shutdown, and we will investigate some time in the future.

Nope. I said they had modified the bill to state that it would preserve the current status of the law. See comment 35.
And the current status of the law is that U.S. citizens who are Al Qaeda terrorists can be detatained indefinitely and transferred to Gitmo.
Now, keep in mind: this does not mean that those U.S. citizens who are detained as Al Qaeda terrorist do not get to petition the U.S. courts for release. They (and, in fact, alien detainees too) still get habeas corpus.

Andy, I hate that these things were mandated and the reason for mandating them is a BS lie, but they do last longer when used in most applications.
I was replacing the incandescent bulbs in my lamp that is on most of the day about 1 per month and a half. I went to a CFL before the ban and that bulb has been in the same lamp for 2.5 years now. I burn it almost all day long.
Where they do not last long is in applications where you turn them on and off a lot. But, incandescents don't last very long in those applications either.

Built my house in 2006 and used CFLs in several places and incandescents in others. Witht he exception of one incandescent fixture that's been one and off a gazillion times I've not had to replace more than 2 of the 20-30 incandescent bulbs.
The CFLs? Got ten of 'em and have had to replace virtually Every. Single. One.
Aside from that and the fact it takes five or six minutes to get full light from them--and that light is a sucky yellow hue--what's not to like?

3- On last night's debate - Newt won once again, Romney made me feel more comfortable about him last night, Perry had to be off the pills because he actually came off articulate and makes me open to MAYBE seeing him as electable again, Bachmann annoyed me as did Santorum, and Paul is an embarassment to my party. When I switched out my reading lamp I looked into LEDs. What scared me about them is that I live in a high lightning area. One nearby strike and surge is likely to take out an LED because they are sensitive to surges. There goes all that cost.
At the time a 100W equivalent LED was running about $25 so I avoided them. If they get cheaper I may go to them. Right now the CFLs can be got from Walmart on sale periodically damn cheap.

And I'm pretty damn sure most people won't carefully recycle them but will just throw them away thus dumping a bunch of toxins into waste disposal centers where it ends up in the water table. The best CFLs are manufactured by Phillips and GE. Since I boycott GE, that leaves Phillips.
But I don't even buy them. Like I said, they consistently burn out too quickly to justify their cost.

That will not happen this time. For all States prior to Apr 1 it will be proportional delegates, and to top that off since all of them moved their primaries up because of FL, they will all lose half their delegates.

I had a 300W halogen lamp (still do in the attic). The bulbs in it continually burned out and were expensive. After the third time I had to fix the switch for it I moved it to the attic. The other problem was that it was one of those that opens out on the top so the light bounced off the ceiling. These kinds of lamps are a fire hazard.
I do miss it though because it was a great reading lamp.
Posted by: Vic at December 16, 2011 08:39 AM (YdQQY)
Those are called torch lamps and are a real fire hazard. They used to sell even more powerful ones and if you put them anywhere near drapes it was house fire time.I have a two bulb quartz halogen work light that burns like the sun. It's great for stuff like interior painting after the sun has gone down. If you turn both bulbs on and run a mini-shop vac on the same circuit it'll trip a 15 amp breaker. You could use it to do surgery or dental work, though.

As I understand the court ruling that only applied to terrorists arrested overseas on the "battlefield". This allows them to arrest American Citizens in the U.S on U.S. soil who may or may not be engaged in active war on the U.S.
Your understanding is not correct. Since the Al Qaeda AUMF, the military has had the authority to detain Al Qaeda combatants, regardless of whether they are U.S. citizens and regardless of their location at the time of apprehension. This measure didn't change that. All this measure did was ensure that Al Qaeda detainees are presumptively to be in the custody of the military. It put a slight (very watered down from the original intent of the drafters) restraint on the President's ability to transfer these detainees into civilian custody for trial in civilian courts. It did not alter their access to civilian courts for the purpose of habeas petitions. It also did not alter the possibility that they could be tried in military courts.

Hmm. Have one in the living room that we almost never use. Too easy for the kids to tip it over. Maybe it's time to get rid of it.
We have one of those openings from the kitchen into the living room...like a little window over the sink...most of the houses here have them. Ours even has shutters. The point being that we leave the light over the sink on as a night light and so I can sit on the couch and read by that light.

I honestly don't mind if idiots want to drive electric cars. I don't even mind if they do it on the highway, as long as they stay in the right hand lane while those of us in real cars drive past them. But it incenses me to no end that I'm footing at least part of the bill for them to drive that car in the first place (Fed, and probably State, subsidies, after all).

If you buy a 100 watt bulb designed for use at 130 volts you may only get the equivalent of 95 watts of light, a negligable difference, but it will literally last for years if not decades.
The higher the voltage rating, the thinner the filament. I have a 12 volt work light (clips onto my car battery) that uses a special incandescent bulb with a very thick filament. Thinking about it, I'm gonna have to check the wattage on the bulb to see if I have to stock up on them. I wouldn't be surprised if they're already illegal.

Let's be sure to label terrorists "terrorists" and keep our condemnation for that specific group. Simply "raising up arms against the United States" does not (necessarily) equal "terror."
Of course, if you do it and lose, you're guilty of treason and will be treated accordingly. And should be.

I've never had a problem with shorter than advertised CFL life spans, that quite a few people complain about. I think it is because I never turn them off. Power cycles shorten the life of CFL much more than incandescent.
This, however, make the energy usage of CFL much harder to calculate. You have to consider a CFL 'burning' 24/7 vs an incandescent being used when only when you turn it on. You have to consider how much of the time you the incandescent will burn because your too lazy to go turn it off(this is me!). I view CFLs and incandescent as a push in energy usage. Although many people complain about light quality, I don't have a problem with it. However, I could just be insensitive to light quality effects.
I use CFL for 2 reasons.
1) They do last longer and the fixtures in my house a pain in the ass to change the bulb in (10ft ceilings that you have to drag the ladder out every time you have to change a bulb). (short answer, I'm lazy)
2) I don't want to think about turning the lights out. (again short answer, I'm lazy)
I view CFLs as a bridge tech until LED lighting becomes cost effective. I don't have a problem with people not adopting it, and I think it is quite an overstep that congress is banning 100w incandescent.

The problem here (and with the SC's Porn decision) is that the law should hinge on definitions. If you can't define porn (which, btw, really isn't that hard to define), then you shouldn't be able to craft legislation against it.
"Terrorism" is the same way. The label "Terrorist" is a great evocative term, and it conveys much that might otherwise be cumbersome to communicate, but if it can't be "defined," then you can't legislate against it specifically.
And I agree that anyone who takes up arms against the US is an enemy combatant and should be handled by the military, for the record, it was the "no rights whatsoever" that I was disagreeing with. Well, that and the "rot in hell," part. I don't even hope Mr. Hitchens is rotting in Hell, though I suspect he is.

In a day or two, you'll start getting the posts (by the same people singing his praises today) that start, "As much as I admired Hitchens... " and then go on to criticize him. In a couple of years, they'll start leaving off that first phrase.

Not "permanently." Indefinitely. There's a difference. Detention under these circumstances includes the ability to petition the courts for release. Your fears that the Obama Administration or a later administration could just sweep people up off the streets without recourse to the courts have no basis in fact or law.

That is the crux of the issue. Replacing CFls to save energy usage nationwide is ludicrous. Not only is it a small fraction of home use but it is not even a piss in the ocean for actual national energy use.
Commercial and industrial electric use is where the load comes from.

Fluorescent light is unflattering and they contain mercury and are difficult to dispose of in a way that isn't harmful to the environment.
Sure, they are useful, but banning the incandescent IS NOT THE ANSWER FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.
An incandescent can be dimmed, which saves energy and money. and incandescent bulbs are 100% recyclable. Also and incandescent bulb's components are not harmful to the environment if tossed into a land fill. You and I know damn well Americans throw compact fluorescents into the trash without thinking about the hazards.
We have a stupid stupid harmful government.
PS - the LED craze? LED are useful, but again, the energy used and negative environmental impact used to make one LED is far greater than the good old incandescent light bulb.

The light fixtures that are on the most in my home all have dimmer switches. So I can save money by dimming them to the least amount of light necessary. Rarely are these fixtures at 100%.
Have not yet seen (not looking, either) dimmable CFLs, though they were mentioned upthread.
Plus every fixture's label says 60 watt max.

Imagine the side of the highway littered with electric cars waiting for the tow truck to come tow them to the next charging station...or will the government require the trucks to install portable charging stations? Geniuses.

In the basement and shop I am going with the full spectrum T-8 fixtures. These are fairly inexpensive from Lowes and HD.
Otherwise I would replace single bulb bases with multiple units.
I refuse to be in the dark, at least literally.
Posted by: sTevo at December 16, 2011 09:23 AM (FzVlt)
DON'T GO TO LOWE'S!!!!I made that mistake, spent $100 on a fixture that was almost impossible to assemble and even worse to mount on the ceiling. I turned it on to check my handiwork and everything seemed fine. I turned it off and just before going upstairs I decided to turn it on again. The ballast blew.
I went to an electrical supply store and bought a nice looking fixture for $56.00 that was completely assembled and easy to install. I now have plenty of light (it was a four bulb fixture).
too bad the T-8s are only 32 watts. You can't buy new 40 watt fixtures anymore.

Morning, all!
I searched but didn't see anyone mentioning this neat little "FU" from Netanyahu to the NY Times. They asked him to write an op-ed, and as Weasel Zippers so accurately put it, he told them to go pound sand.
(link to the Jpost article)
...[Senior Adviser Ron] Dermer’s letter came a day after NYT columnist Thomas Friedman wrote that the resounding ovation Netanyahu received in Congress when he spoke there in May had been “bought and paid for by the Israel lobby.”
With Friedman clearly – but not solely – among those in mind, Dermer wrote that “the opinions of some of your regular columnists regarding Israel are well known. They constantly distort the positions of our government and ignore the steps it has taken to advance peace. They cavalierly defame our country by suggesting that marginal phenomena condemned by Prime Minister Netanyahu, and virtually every Israeli official, somehow reflect government policy or Israeli society as a whole.”
The whole letter is like that. The fact that Netanyahu himself didn't send it, but had one of his advisers do it, is just icing on the cake.
I love Bibi.

I've read folks endorsing:
between blue lines, 10-15 rows back on main floor
near the penalty boxes (I've actually done this when I was a kid; I don't recall much about the game though)
at the club level (which I gather is sort of like the mezzanine)
behind the net at either the 10-15 rows main or at the first upper deck
and, interestingly (to me), right at the glass in any of the corners which is supposedly where the scouts sit
Any thoughts? Money is no object.

It's a common flaw in the conservative character - excessive and undue mercy for the enemy (part of why we lose so many elections that we should win). This happens almost every time some Leftist passes - people come out with the expressions of sympathy. When Barney Frank dies, it'll be the same thing. Sombody will be saying "Bleeding to death because a gerbil tore up your insides is such a horrible way to go, and I feel SO BAD for that guy, cuz he was such a nice, well spoken Leftist who just sorta disagreed with us some times and was generally a good American. And think of all the good things he did at some point in his life!"
I don't get pleasure from their deaths (usually) but I certainly can't spare a Leftist any pity when they go. More than half of them would shove people like us into gas chambers given the chance. If you think the people the Nazis had running the camps were some kind of statistical abberation, think again.
I don't know what happened to Mr. Hitchens, spiritually speaking. Frankly, since I didn't know the guy and had no chance or responsibility to help him in that area, I can't really give it much thought. But in terms of my practical day to day life, he's just one less enemy to plague me. And any man who denigrates the memory of Ronald Reagan is beneath contempt to begin with.

Expect to see more and more of this as time passes. A woman is condemned for breast feeding a baby in the privacy of her own home. All of them who are true believers are capable of this, including those in the US.

Did anyone catch this? Some guy was arrested in New York for declaring an unloaded gun in his luggage because his CCW license from California isn't valid in NY. Oh, yeah- he's a bigwig in the Tea Party Patriots group, so OF COURSE that was the first thing mentioned:
Prosecutors charged Mark Meckler, the co-founder of Tea Party Patriots, with felony weapons possession after he told a Delta ticket agent early Thursday morning that he had a weapon in his luggage.
Meckler was carrying an unloaded Glock pistol and numerous rounds of ammunition in a locked gun box, according to multiple reports.
MecklerÂ’s attorney, Brian Stapleton, said Meckler had a concealed-carry permit for the gun issued by California, and that Meckler was in temporary transit through New York.
But the California permit wasnÂ’t valid in New York.
“He legally declared his possession of the firearm in his checked baggage at the ticket counter as required by law and in a manner approved by TSA and the airline, yet was arrested by port authority for said possession,” Stapleton said in a statement.

Short Version (the long version is really long): Reason cannot arise from non-reason (on its own). Therefore, if there is not some Ultimate Reason from which our own reasoning is derived, our reasoning is not "reason" at all, but the pre-ordained (for lack of a better term) firing of neurons simply responding to the stimuli they are presented.
If we aren't created, and therefore arose by chance, no one could ever have done anything any differently than they did, because they're simply acting out the drives of their quantum-physical nature. We could no more choose our own actions than a pool ball could choose which direction to go when struck by a cue.

Hockey doesn't translate very well to TV IMO. The way they shoot it, you don't usually actually get to see all the important stuff. The cameras always focus on the puck, but often the important stuff is happening far away from that- positioning and such.
So hockey, which looks random enough as it is, looks even more random on TV.

My guess is because hockey moves so damn fast. I like the idea of hockey, and I like to hear how my NHL team is doing, but I can't watch the games because I can NEVER follow the puck. At least in football they have to take a few moments to re-form the line between downs!

Watch with someone(s) who really knows the game. That's how I got interested in it.
Also, some broadcasts are better than others, depending on the announcers (I like that little bald guy, Darren Pang) and especially (imho) the lighting of the arena. And, of course, team styles matter. Keep sampling games until you find one you like. Back in the day I became an Edmonton Oilers fan because they seemed to be the speed team.

One thing I really like about hockey is the sound of it. I love the sounds of the skates punctuated by the crashing of the glass. Also, there's not a lot of extraneous (annoying) patter by the announcers compared to the horror of so many NFL games. It's very soothing. If no one is directing it, and no one designed it (either of which would indicate a Theistic deity, by the by) how is it not the very definition of "random?"
Remember, Natural Selection is not some force, like gravity (which doesn't "work" at all, it simply "is."), and it's not some set of principles like physics or chemistry (which simply describe how things are seen to operate). Natural Selection (which, yes, exists) is either a by-product of some pre-existing system, or a random series of events. If it is the by-product of some pre-existing system, we've done two things: show that "Natural Selection" is nonsense (or, rather, a useless tautology), and simply moved the question one step back: what is that pre-existing system, and is it random, or is it guided/designed.
We can trace the development of the human brain over long stretches of time
No we can't. Unless you have a time machine and a CAT scanner that would survive the process that I don't know about. What we can do is theorize about such things, but those theories are largely (purely) conjecture. Certainly by the time man did things like discover the making of fire, and tool working, and such, reason already existed.
Indeed, to have discovered how to make fire in the first place, man would have to have reason. Only reason can say "hmm, when I do this, I get sparks that start a fire. That will always happen, so I can use this method to start a fire." That is reasoning. If reason had not already existed, then man would have no "reason" to believe that doing the same thing would always result in the same event. Indeed, a definition of insanity is that one expects different results from repetitions of the same event. Insanity is just another way to say "without reason" or "malfunctioning reason."

This story has been really badly-reported locally and nationally.
Nevertheless, I can't help but ask why Rick Perry has a middle schooler working on his campaign. /sarc
"A Utah County middle school's decision to out a gay student to his parents has sparked criticism from advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youths.
[snip]
Parents were notified that their 14-year-old son is gay, she said, because the school was being "proactive" in preventing bullying. The student was not disciplined at school, she said, but his parents, who have asked that their names not be released to media, have decided to keep him home until attention surrounding the issue dies down. The student plans to return to school after winter break.
"We do include parents any time there's a potential safety issue with a student," Bromley said.
[snip]
Last week, the eighth-grade student began letting classmates know that he is gay, including by noting it in a class assignment in which students created advertisements about themselves. A teacher consulted with him to make sure he wanted it displayed in class with all the other students' posters, and he said he did. Later, an adult aide overheard other students making negative comments to the boy about being gay. An assistant principal admonished the students for their comments.
The administrator also talked to the gay student, who confirmed he is gay but said he had not told his parents, Bromley said. The administrator discussed the need for the boy to be able to feel safe talking to teachers and his parents about any problems he may have.
"He was nervous about [telling his parents]. He initially said, 'No, that can't happen.' She talked to him. He finally agreed reluctantly," Bromley said. But the student insisted on not being in the room when the administrator told his parents he's gay."

Yeah.
I think this story was really misreported. It wasn't the school's decision to out him. It was the school's decision (based on an established general policy about bullying) to persuade him to tell his parents. The method used - of the school telling the parents - was the kid's choice.
Initially I thought it was a bad thing, but after learning the facts, it's probably ok, given how much 'counseling' type stuff schools do already anyway.

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-N.M.) mocked CorzineÂ’s apologies and his statements that he sympathizes with MF Global customers hurt by the bankruptcy.
“What hotel are you at here in the city?” Pearce asked, repeating Corzine’s barely audible answer: “The Ritz Carlton — did I hear it correctly?”
“How many of the 36,000 clients that were defrauded have you called personally?” Pearce asked.
“None,” Corzine said.
Alluding to the fortune Corzine made as head of Goldman Sachs, Pearce asked, “Have you created a scholarship for any of the families that have been disadvantaged, people just to help them out with maybe their college funds? Yes? No?”
“Congressman, the answer is no,” Corzine said.
I wonder why Occupy WS hasn't deigned to attend these hearings.

There's no need for government regulation. People will naturally migrate to the new product just as they have from many analog to digital technologies when the cost to benefit ratio has deemed it worthwhile.
The whole incandescent ban is just a way of bailing out all the companies that went big on manufacturing CFLS and need to recoup the money on a bad bet before LEDs take over the marketplace. GE & Westinghouse went big on CFLs, Phillips & many Asian companies (Korea in particular) are playing the long game on LEDs.

The only problems with LEDs, aside from the rapidly declining production costs, is that they tend to be very directional lights and generate heat. This requires the bulb units to array the LEDs in a way that casts light evenly like incandescent do or come up with a novel reflective lens. The heat issue is being resolved with new designs (which also increase brightness versus loosing energy to waste heat) and heat sinks designed into the reflective lenses.
At the current rate of development and the price curve they'll be cheaper than CFLs within 5-10.

The ones I have used have lasted longer than incandescents, and for lights that are on a lot, they put off a lot less heat and you can safely use a much higher luminescence on the same socket... so the CFL's are not *all* bad.
That said, the LED technology is vastly superior. Too bad they're so expensive right now.
Of course, as a Conservative, I don't want Government or anyone else telling me what kind of light bulbs I can and can't choose. I'm more than capable of considering the benefits and drawbacks of my light bulb choices and making my own decision, thank you very much.

Recently had an argument about turning thermostats up and down, according to room occupancy--night vs day-- and I opined that changing settings will cause more energy use than a constant. As I read, in order to make a room comfortable, the surroundings need to be at or near ambient air temp. Until these conditions are met , the room will feel uncomfortable.
I argued that continued warming after cooldown will use more energy than a constant setting.
Am I wrong or is there logic to that idea?

Wiki says, "they have."
"On January 18, 2009, it was played at the beginning of We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. It was also played at the beginning of "An American Reunion", the concert (also at the Lincoln Memorial) on the Saturday prior to the inauguration of Bill Clinton in 1992."
The song is inspired by Henry Wallace, 1948 Presidential nominee for the Progressive Party after a long stint in FDR's administration as VP and in his cabinet.

I bought a thing that went into the socket that would ramp the light on and off. probably similar to what your talking about without the wiring. This is as close a match as I could find online. I put it in my kids room when they were little because if you fliped the switch twice it would dim to off over 20 minutes. I never had to change that bulb the 5 yrs I lived in that house.
P.S. I did not pay $99 bucks at the link more like $5 for a set of 2

Unfortunately, the Church of Christ isn't big into formalized logic and theology (we've got plenty of logicians and theologans, they're just mostly self-taught, or had to go through some other tradition for their training). I got hooked on semi-formal Apologetics when I first read Mere Christianity.

I argued that continued warming after cooldown will use more energy than a constant setting.
Am I wrong or is there logic to that idea?
I tend to agree with you -- in January, I'll be starting pepper seeds in my seed-starting structure.
I currently have the heater set to turn ON at 40 F and OFF at 45 F (just trying to keep the better half's geraniums alive). http://tinyurl.com/c3uto6w
The 'slow temperature decay' follows the standard discharge curve -- which means the heater would be on more frequently, but for far less time. I don't really know if the "ON" times would be equivalent.
This year I'll set the on/off temp much closer and monitor the electricity usage. I'll report results if a thread gets this geeky in March.
The reason this might be worth experimenting on is that I've got about 80 gallons of water in a structure 7' x 8' -- thermal mass!

I think that is a great piece. I would go so far as to say Aaron Copeland is America's greatest composer. But Copeland was a commie. Copeland later had a falling out with the commies over the restrictions the commies put on Dimitri Shostakovitch's compositions. Copeland was OK with the gulags, with the Ukrainian famine, the show trials, etc. put when they start trying to tell a compose what harmonies and rhythms he can use, that's the final straw! They say he was a homo, too.

Add me to the list of "haven't had trouble" with CFLs.
With a couple of exceptions which I blame on either the fixtures or the wiring. In each of my bathrooms, I have those 4-bulb fixtures (two of them in the Master bath). Among all three of those fixtures, I have one that hasn't had a problem, but the other two- bulbs in the same two positions keep burning out. I haven't had to change the other 10 bulbs at all, but those two I keep having to replace.
I've had CFLs everywhere I could put them (only replacing those recurring 3 and, I think, one other) for around 5 years now.

That was an early LED bulb design. The newest ones don't look as freakish and produce the same quality of light as incandescent bulbs.
Easy example to see the march of bulb technology. If you've bought a mini-maglite flashlight in the past year the new bulbs in them are LEDs. The originals 1980s/1990s were 4 lumen incandescent, 1990s-2000s the xenons were around 15 lumens, the latest LED ones sold are now 75 lumens. All with the same battery life.

CFL's have a lower up-front cost, LED's have a much better long-term benefit. I just plain can't afford to light the whole house with LED's yet.

I guess not very observant! He's been here in the U.S. for the last couple of years. Both he and his wife are Israeli. His parents and brother still live back there.
Funny thing too, his parents were visiting at the time of the relay. They came to the post-race party at the finish line with his wife. His mom was wearing a shirt. At first glance, it looked like one of those Victoria's Secret "Peace and Love" t-shirts (had peace signs and hearts all over it). On closer inspection, it actually said "Fuck Peace and Love" all over it. One of my other teammates said "OMG, did you see G's mom's t-shirt? Do you think she knows what that means? Do you think she's trying to make some kind of political statement?" Well, duh!
Funny thing, his mom is a neurologist back in Israel. We didn't talk politics at all, but it was interesting listening to her talk about how she works 2 jobs as a doc--she has her own private practice, and she also works for the state. She works waaay more than 40 hours a week.

For the first time, the poll found that a majority of adults, 52 percent, said Obama should be voted out of office while 43 percent said he deserves another term. The numbers mark a reversal since last May, when 53 percent said Obama should be re-elected while 43 percent said he didnÂ’t deserve four more years.
ObamaÂ’s overall job approval stands at a new low, with 44 percent approving and 54 percent disapproving. The presidentÂ’s standing among independents is worse: Thirty-eight percent approve while 59 percent disapprove. Among Democrats, the president holds steady with an approval rating of 78 percent while only 12 percent of Republicans approve of the job heÂ’s doing.

I've seen modern LED bulbs which produce great looking warm light, but those buggers cost like 28$ at the store, each, with virtually no energy savings over CFL. I'm fond of LEDs and their ruggedness, but at that price, fuck that.

I think the old commsymps served a very important purpose: sure, they were radical pinkos in their heydays, but they became washed out jokes by the time the 80s rolled around. To a whole generation who came after the BB navel gazers, they were objects of derision. Faced with siding with Tom Hayden or Ronald Reagan, most of us chose Reagan.
Unfortunately, the aimless Millenials rediscovered them, with Obama as their gateway drug. But most of them will learn that lifelong unemploymentdebt is no way to go thru life, so they'll come 'round.

Ya know, if you go find a high tension line you might be able to have lightsaber fights. I've seen a greenie show complaining about electrical fields that involved flourescents spontaneously lighting up under a high-tension line.
There's enough RF energy on some of the mountaintops in CA that all you need is a coil of wire attached to the back of the outlet with the lamp screwed into it to get enough light.
Did anyone catch this? Some guy was arrested in New York for declaring an unloaded gun in his luggage because his CCW license from California isn't valid in NY. Oh, yeah- he's a bigwig in the Tea Party Patriots group, so OF COURSE that was the first thing mentioned:
If he was in transit, then he's protected by law. 18USC926A is the operative law here, AKA the Firearm Owners' Protection Act. If he was traveling from a location where it was legal for him to possess the firearm to another location where it was legal for him to possess the firearm, and was in continuous transit, just changing from one mode to another, he's covered.
The most recent case was Revell v. PANYNJ, where the prosecutor decided to null prosse the whole thing, but it took over a year for him to get his firearms back.

For the record, that was originally a Boston Tory sentiment (pre-4/19/1775) expression

The light bulb ban is still on, by the way. Now, it just doesn't start until September instead of January.
The main reason for the light bulb ban is because GE wasn't making enough margin on incandescents. They make a much better margin on their CFL's.
