— Gabriel Malor

Happy Friday.

First up, the Case for Oklahoma State at the BCS Championship. As we head into Bedlam, some analysts are saying "Alabama? Really?"

Congress is indeed headed to a showdown with the President over the defense authorization bill. Last night, the Senate overwhelmingly (93-7) approved its version, which includes, with a limited waiver, a measure requiring the military to hold suspected terrorists linked to al-Qaida or its affiliates. The bill now must be reconciled with the House version (it also has a detainee provision) before the final bill hits the President's desk. The White House says the President stands by his veto threat.

Starting it of with “on this day”….On this day of infamy in 1970 the EPA was formed. The agency was proposed by Nixon under an executive order (sound familiar) in July 1970 but at least he got congressional approval which happened on Dec 2, 1970.  It would be nice if 2012 we have an executive order dissolving the EPA.

Both versions of the payroll tax 2% cut went down in flames in the Senate

The Democrat version defeated 51-49, 3 of the Dems voted with the Rs, 1 R (Susan “IÂ’m a fking Dem” Collins voted for it).  The Republican version which financed the cut by cutting spending was defeated by an even wider margin, 20-78, as more Rs joined the no vote along with all the Dems.  All of these bills for the payroll tax cut are a damn joke.  It will not do a damn thing to boost the economy.

There is only one thing that will give companies the assurance they need to start hiring and start producing again. That is to get the stumbling CF of a born losing asshole out of office along with at least 11 of the commie Senators. That latter is not going to happen, so it will be a continued tough road. But getting Obama back to his cesspool of shit in Chicago will be a start.  At least then we can start undoing his executive fiat orders in EPA.

3 Gabe has already covered this but I am still going to post my version. Gabe and I disagree on this bill.

Senate approves the military bill allowing arrest and detention of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil w/o trial or habeas corpus

The vote here was 93-7 indicating that there are many Rs, including a lot here at AOS, who donÂ’t give a flying shit about the Constitution.  In short, the terrorists have won. They have got us to abandon the Constitution. This bill is S.1867 so it has not been to the House. Maybe they will save us, but I have no confidence in that.  DonÂ’t believe the newspapers on why Obama is against this law. As Gabe said the other day, he is against it because it blocks sending Gitmo detainees to the U.S. for trial. If I am not mistaken there is already a law on the books doing that.

This is why the government is not supposed to be involved in private business at all

GM has been busy overproducing cars and sending them to languish in showrooms all for the purpose of making the economy “look” better.  These chickens will also come home to roost. We are looking more and more like the 1950s era Soviet economy and the outcome of that was awful.

I do hope the next republican President exposes all this shit to the public when he takes office because he truly will be able to blame these returning chickens on Obama and his communist cronies.

Save Romney, I would guess, by trying to remind people who don't seem to know that Newt has a past. 33 No, Vic, the bill does not allow the military to detain U.S. citizens (or even terrorists) without habeas corpus. They will have the same opportunity to petition the courts that all current Gitmo detainees and other military detainees enjoy.

This bill doesn't change that arrangement at all. All it does is limit the President's ability to move Al Qaeda terrorism detainees from military custody to civilian custody.

34 28 At this point I don't care what they call him. As they write his political epitaph, we can pretend all sorts of things about the guy, including that he was a conservative. Good riddance, I say. 36 No, Vic, the bill does not allow the military to detain U.S. citizens (or even terrorists) without habeas corpus. They will have the same opportunity to petition the courts that all current Gitmo detainees and other military detainees enjoy.

Did they change that portion of the bill after the amendment to change it was defeated?  When I last looked at the bill it certainly did allow them to detain w/o trial or habeas corpus American citizens on American soil.

Repealing a ban on women drivers in Saudi Arabia would result in ‘no more virgins’, [and] relaxing the ban would also see more Saudis - both men and women - turn to homosexuality and pornography [according to] Muslim scholars at the Majlis al-Ifta’ al-A’ala, Saudi Arabia’s highest religious council, working in conjunction with Kamal Subhi, a former professor at the King Fahd University. (UK DailyMail)

If Saudi women could get behind the wheel of a car, they'd leave. Hence, the fear there would be no more "virgins" for patriarchal thugs to abuse.

And who the hell wants a "scholarly" degree from a university that fabricates "research" finding that women driving vehicles force the population into pornography and homosexuality?

And these same Saudis are given permission by our nation's leaders to direct US foreign policy to militarily advance this insane Saudi caliphate (Muslim Brotherhood) throughout the Middle East.

I'll take 1-AA (or whatever the NCAA nitwits are calling it now) and lower football any day of the week...they actually decide the champion on the field in the other divisions, instead of it being 90% or more determined by the name of the school and where it was ranked preseason as it is in 1-A.

62 I'm rooting for Oklahoma State (or anyone not named LSU or Alabama) to get in just out fatigue from seeing the same damn teams play in it every year. It's boring as hell.

That is not going to change unless two things happen:

1. They balance how players are recruited which I am not sure how that can be done. Players are always going to want to go with a winner, preferably close to "home" but mostly a winner. and...
2. They go to a playoff series like the NFL and eliminate this bowl game BS. But that is not going to happen because the bowl game BS makes too much money.

Besides, right now the SEC is the dominant conference, like it or not. For a long time it was the big ten, but they have been sliding lately.

Who stopped or formally reprimanded AG Holder for dismissing the case against Philadelphia's neuer Black Panthers?

Who is reprimanding Potus Obama with impeachment for attacking with federal lawsuits States that protect resident citizens even as said Potus is granting pardons to convicted members of organized crime?

Who is reprimanding members of Congress for insider trading, for absconding with massive tax funds, for voting to bail-out fraudulent banking corporations, corrupt manufacturing corporations, and nations all bankrupt?

Who officially denies traveling citizens our constitutional rights through ritual abuse?

Who enables fraud and the dissolution of Constitutional Governance?

What ever happened to the neoconservative DHS/terrorism war ethic: "We're fighting over there so we don't have to here" rationale, just more water under the bridge along with "winning the hearts and minds of the enemy."

73 @50 Repealing a ban on women drivers in Saudi Arabia would result in ‘no more virgins’,

I am reminded time and again how little removed we are in time from the stage of civilization the Saudis are in. Until the late 1960's, the AAUW (which women were required to join at most universities) banned women riding in cars. Judge Bork stated in "Slouching Toward Gomorrah"  that moral decline stemmed from the young being able to listen to rock'n'roll, which they could do because of car radios (FWIW, the first radio in a car was installed by young Barry Goldwater).

Today young(ish) conservatives post links to thrash and metal on the ONT to illustrate a point, or serve as background reading music. Those who grew up with uninhibited (Althouse: "unadultered") access to pop music have no feeling for just how revolutionary a development this is.  We occasionally get a poster on here who feels that it's unAmerican.

Hell they were over $1000 for a 26" console when I worked in the TV shop in the late 60s but that number is irrelevant.

While an equivalent 32" flat screen is only about $300 for a good one, before they dropped out the cathode ray tubes you could get one for $200. (both these prices based on WalMart)

By "won't be a flip decision," Joe is saying he doesn't care much for doggy style.

81 @81: the cost of MANY things has plummeted since the 1970's. That is what makes the Liberal claim that average family income has not increased since the Seventies so lame (and remember, back in the Seventies they were telling us a load of bullshit about how the Fifties were the "Happy Days" for the average American). The reality, the average American has at least 40 percent more discretionary purchasing power today than back in the 1970's.

82 The unintended consequence of the electrification of the auto fleet will be the nuclear-ifying of the energy grid because the existing grid will not handle the required loads to charge a national fleet.

84 While an equivalent 32" flat screen is only about $300 for a good one, before they dropped out the cathode ray tubes you could get one for $200. (both these prices based on WalMart) Posted by: Vic at December 02, 2011 09:23 AM (YdQQY) Yeah, but they dropped cathode ray technology because no one wanted it.

Are you sitting on your porch, drinking America's best product?

TVs are far better and far cheaper than they were before the digital mandate.

In this case the mandate came after the technology was available (unlike the stupid fleet mileage fiasco).

89 >>I've always wondered if abolishing pre-season polls would make a difference.

I think this would help.  What would also help is if they ranked more than - what is it? - the top 25 teams.  Why not rank 1-100?

At the end of the day, I actually preferred the old way.  It seems a foolish exercise to try to come up with a national champion unless you're going to do a real playoff system.  All they've done now is ruin some old bowl traditions, like the Rose Bowl.

Posted by: Y-not at December 02, 2011 05:59 AM (5H6zj)

90 2. They go to a playoff series like the NFL and eliminate this bowl game BS. But that is not going to happen because the bowl game BS makes too much money.

Besides, right now the SEC is the dominant conference, like it or not. For a long time it was the big ten, but they have been sliding lately.

Posted by: Vic at December 02, 2011 08:12 AM (YdQQY)

Oh, I don't expect it to ever happen, but that's what it would take to get me interested again. I've never understood why they couldn't just use the bowl games (the biggest however many it takes to get thru the size field they go with) as the sites for the various playoff games. Of course, the answer is, they don't want to, not that they can't, because this system keeps all the money flowing to the usual suspects in the usual conferences. Sort of like American politics in DC.

91 Bama lost to LSU, the Cowboys lost to a bunch of scrubs.

But it was in OT, and OT is a crap shoot.  OSU is also undefeated in regulation.

Honestly, a part of me always wants Alabama to get another NC but I won't cry when we get boned by the voters.  We more than had our chances to beat LSU in regulation so the boning is self-inflicted.

On the plus side, I hear we have a commitment from one of the top ranked HS kickers for next year.  It's pretty obvious that a good freshman can be a 5 years starter for Alabama.

92 Here's a lovely "article" I saw linked at Yahoo this morning - "Why Republicans Embrace Simpletons and How it Hurts America".  At Forbes dot com no less.  Tone?  Not even the back-handed insult type of descriptions like, "Study finds Democrats with 3 point higher IQs", from which one might jump to the title.  No, we get goodies like "Ronald Reagan became the first of many morally unambiguous dimwits to warm the cockles of conservative hearts."  Gee, tell us what you really feel - and I do mean "feel", as opposed to "think".

There is that, too. Which, of course, makes the "we must preserve the tradition of the bowl games" excuse for not having a playoff system sound even more hypocritical, since they already ruined it with the current bloody system.

94 Repealing a ban on women drivers in Saudi Arabia would result in ‘no more virgins’, I lived in Saudi for a couple of years. Couldn't drive, and frankly, didn't want to because those fools are scary behind the wheel. But as for Saudi women driving, remember, they have to go out veiled. Can you imagine hordes of veiled women trying to see the road, stoplights, traffic signs? Between the regular crazy drivers (some of whom are 7 or 8 years old) and women who can't see, I guess there would be no virgins. They would all die in car wrecks.

95 TVs are far better and far cheaper than they were before the digital mandate.

Disagree on both scores, unless by better you mean sharper picture. They are NOT cheaper and they are far more unreliable than the technology that came just before.

Posted by: Vic at December 02, 2011 06:16 AM (YdQQY)

96 a 32" Flat Screen is not comparable to a 32" old style tv.  They measure both diagonly, if you measure top to bottom the 32" old style is much bigger and closer in size to a 42" flat screen.

That said, if you take the original color 32" TV's when the Tech came out, lets just look at mid 1970's prices and adjust to inflation they would cost Several Thousand Dollars today, adjusted to inflation.  Thats beside the point of being lesser technology with less options.

Flat Screens have Moore's law being applied to them and they will continue to get cheaper and cheaper as the years go on.  Plasma is cheaper than LCD or LED because its the oldest of this Tech and the equipment has been paid off to produce by now.

I know that, but is as close as you will get for cost comparison. But I wouldn't call and old style 32" the same as a new 42".

Plasma is cheaper right now because they are marking them down due to lower popularity and CA outlawing them. Technically, the experts still rate them higher in picture quality than LCD/LED.

Posted by: Vic at December 02, 2011 06:37 AM (YdQQY)

98 And the prices I was comparing was for both types at the time of pushing in the HD mandate so inflation doesn't come into play.

99 "Alabama, really?" Yes, really. There's a difference between losing to Nobody State, and losing to the consensus Best Team in the Nation (Eff Les Miles, btw). And I'm not even convinced the Cowboys will survive Bedlam. Roll Tide Roll.

If you ignore the incredibly sharp picture of a modern TV, what are you comparing...color quality? If so, modern TVs are better in that too!

I would like to join you on your porch and have a few glasses of whatever you are drinking. I'll bring the hot chocolate chip cookies.

103 I thought I said tat, while picture quality is better, reliability is far worse.

Posted by: Vic at December 02, 2011 06:57 AM (YdQQY)

104 I have had both a plasma and an LED/LCD and plasmas are plainly, plainly superior in all ways except for the annoying "I have to worry about burn in" problem. Although that is not really a big worry. Still, I always hated having to even consider that.

Posted by: ace at December 02, 2011 07:16 AM (nj1bB)

105 It's really bizarre that they continue to add new technology to LCDs (including LED backlighting, which, frankly, shows up an awful lot as ghostly halos, and is pretty objectionable) just to get them to the ballpark range of picture quality of cheaper plasmas. Everybody asks what the best LCD tv is. The best LCD tv is a plasma. Plasmas are very heavy and drain power. That said, no contest.

107 @106: The great thing is many of them can be fixed with a 25 cent capacitor.  (Just use a higher heat rating than what they shipped and it'll last forever).  Samsung LED sets are especially prone to this; I've read multiple tales of people picking one off the trash pile, finding it dead, replacing the cap, and having a perfectly working set for free.

108 “My intentions were still just to do a high-speed taxi,” Johnson recalled. “I never had a conscious intention to fly that airplane. The nose lifts off the runway at about 105 knots [120 mph]. As I approached 105, I could feel the nose getting light, and I thought I would just wait a few more seconds to see if I could feel the plane getting light on the main gear. The few seconds passed, and I just didn’t think I had enough room to stop. I wasn’t thinking about being in trouble. I was thinking about maintaining climb airspeed, and when I was in a definite climb, I retracted the landing gear. I was off and committed. There was no wind at all that night. The air was smooth as glass.” The time was 10:34 p.m.
