To get you started:

The technology wars are heating up. Apple just got HTC smartphone sales banned in the U.S. Apple sought a ban on the sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tabs across the globe and got one in many places. But Samsung says the ban backfired by turning the Galaxy Tab into a household name.

Skype is offering free airport wifi over the holidays. You just have to have the latest version of skype installed...

Nevada has only sold 10 tickets to its bowl game. Dude.

This is the kind of shit that Wall Mart has to put up with in local and national papers

Why are these papers so dead set against Wall Mart?  Because Democrats are against Wall Mart is why. So why are Democrats against Wall Mart? Because big labor is against Wall Mart is why. And they are Wall Mart h8ters because the workers of Wall Mart refuse to embrace the suck known as unions. But what never ceases to surprise me is why this paper is able to sell a single issue in SC.

17 Hope you feel better, Vic. I only know how my dad felt going through the poisoning and it wasn't pretty. My prayers are with you.

As for the Wal-Mart story, they ran another Wal-Mart bashing in the NY Daily News yesterday because they're still attempting to put one in Harlem. All the teeth gnashing about how the shitty bodegas that would be put out of business, not a mention about the low, low prices the residents of Harlem would be able to enjoy. Not that I care that much, seeing how I pay the wages for the average Harlem layabout, I could care less that they don't have a place to go to get good savings, but of course that's not the angle the Daily News takes.

LOL, my problem today is not from the chemo. I thought I was ready for a "rocker day" yesterday. Had to drink my bourbon through a straw because the ice burned my lips. But thanks.

As for the Wal-Mart story, they ran another Wal-Mart bashing in the NY Daily News yesterday because they're still attempting to put one in Harlem.

Aren't these local papers the shit?  Why are they all in the tank for Dems and unions. Wall Mart in Harlem or downtown Columbia would be a huge boon to minorities but the assholes cow-tow to the unions and ignore the good for the minorities. Which poses another question.

Why do minorities continue to work on the Democrat plantation despite the fact that the Dems regularly kill them and take them for granted?

19 Read the article, Gabe. Apple did not get HTC phones banned. They got a ruling that said HTC must remove the feature, a minor one, by a deadline next year or risk having them banned. Seems to me Apple doesn't like competition, and if somebody today were to make an ad suggesting they're needing to have their 1984ish attitude smashed, it would hit home.

33 You know I was just thinking.

Ron Paul taking the lead (in some polls at least) in Iowa is the BEST thing that could have happened to Newt.

Now for the next 2 weeks, the long knives will be out for Paul trying to paint him as nutty and extreme (not hard to do).  I PROMISE you, the RNC and TPTB in Iowa do not want Paul to win Iowa.

So for the next two weeks Paul gets the media enema and Newt comes out looking quite reasonable and intelligent by comparison.  Also, I believe that some Newt voters who have shifted to Perry and Bachmann may come back to Newt because they don't want to split their votes and give Paul the win.

IMHO, this whole thing is a perfect setup for a Newt win in Iowa.

well yeah, I think it's silly to say that there is "no establishment"

HOWEVER....

there is a difference between the "establishment" that actually exists, and the "establishment" that exists only in the fevered imaginations of those who are prone to paranoia and believing in conspiracies

to hear some on our side talk, "the establishment" is like some CIA special ops unit that goes into Republican voters' homes in the dead of night and brainwashes them into supporting Mitt Romney, or something

I think the power of "the establishment" is vastly overstated; moreover IMO it is just often used as an excuse for why someone's preferred candidate is not doing as well as they would like ("what?  Huntsman is only polling at 1%?  It can't be because Huntsman is flawed, oh no no, it's.... None of them are a pure (or even close) this or that...in practice, Obama isn't a Marxist any more than Stalin was. They're both fascists who happen to use the terminology and buzz words of Marxism. There are socialist-flavored fascists and Marxist-flavored ones, but they all want all the power they can get their grubby little hands on which makes them fascists in reality. It's not got a thing to do with "workers of the world unite"...it's always been "elitist pricks of the world unite and rule the masses".

Everything he's proposed - especially his seeming inability to say for certain he'll get rid of Obamacare - is tinkering around the edges of the bloated federal government. I've not seen anything from him that leads me to think he'd do anything better than "slow the growth" of the thing. As far as I'm concerned, any politician who is okay with the size of government we have today, with all the facets of what should be our private lives that it intrudes into, is a statist. Mitt says all the right things about free markets and capitalism, etc., but he seems to be okay with the federal government sucking up all the daylight in this country.

59 "What I've seen the last 3 or 4 decades looks more like devolution than evolution to me."

Christianity was the force most responsible for stopping biological evolution, with its emphasis on valuing all life infinitely. Now, coupled with medical technology, biological devolution is increasing.

But it doesn't matter. Our species is serving its purpose: We are developing artificial intelligences, nanotechnology, and biological/neurological hybrids. This exponentially increasing technology is the next form of evolution, and it will vastly outstrip biological evolution.

It took 2 billion years to move from single-celled to multi-celled organisms. Since the Cambrian explosion of animals with brains, intelligence has been increasing, and increased rapidly in the primate family and specifically in the hominid line.

It took 14 years to move from PC to Internet. You see rapid exponential growth of technology all around us. Right now, our AI is quite limited and brittle, applied to only narrow, but expanding, areas. Soon, with exponential growth, it will become massively more intelligent than us, eventually supplanting us.

Biological evolution is giving way to technological evolution. This will probably kill children born today - and almost certainly their children ... if not ours, already living.

62 Hey, remember all the media outrage when the museum in Baghdad was supposedly "looted" during the Iraq War? Where's the outcry here? I haven't seen one U.S. Media outlet cover this story. From the UK's The Guardian: Volunteers in white lab coats, surgical gloves and masks stood on the back of a pickup truck along the banks of the Nile in Cairo, rummaging through stacks of rare 200-year-old manuscripts that were little more than charcoal debris. The volunteers, ranging from academic experts to appalled citizens, have spent the past two days trying to salvage what's left of some 192,000 books, journals and writings, casualties of Egypt's latest bout of violence. The Institute of Egypt, a research centre set up by Napoleon Bonaparte during France's invasion in the late 18th century, caught fire during clashes between protesters and Egypt's military over the weekend. It was home to a treasure trove of writings, most notably the handwritten 24-volume Description de l'Egypte, which began during the 1798-1801 French occupation. It includes 20 years of observations by more than 150 French scholars and scientists, was one of the most comprehensive descriptions of Egypt's monuments, its ancient civilisation and contemporary life at the time. It is probably now burned beyond repair. Its home, the two-storey historic institute near Tahrir Square, is now in danger of collapsing after the roof caved in. "The burning of such a rich building means a large part of Egyptian history has ended," the director of the institute, Mohammed al-Sharbouni, said at the weekend. Al-Sharbouni said most of the contents were destroyed in the fire that raged for more than 12 hours on Saturday. Firefighters flooded the building with water, adding to the damage.

But Mitt hasn't said he is "okay with the size of government we have today".

See here is the problem.  It is these ridiculous attacks on Mitt that make me want to support him more, not less.  He isn't a socialist.  He isn't a statist.  He is a "turnaround" guy, a competent manager.  He does not have a 100% ACU rating, for sure.  That is not the reason to vote for him.  The reason to vote for him is if you value competent management more than perfect ideological agreement on every single issue.   I think Mitt will shrink the size of government because it is patently and obviously clear that this is what has to happen.  I don't think he will do it for some ideological reason, true - I think he will do it for a pragmatic reason.  I guess that is not good enough for the Mitt haters though.

Oh and FTR as I posted last night on the Perry thread, I am somewhere around 55-45 Romney/Perry support right about now.  So I'm not 100% sold on Mitt.  I just don't think he is the Devil.

77 But Mitt hasn't said he is "okay with the size of government we have today".

The guy said we can't let Social Security become a "Perry Scheme" and spent a month scare-mongering seniors that Perry was going to try to slash their benefits.  That doesn't indicate to me he's willing to take a realistic look at entitlements.

He is a "turnaround" guy, a competent manager

He didn't turnaround MA.  He took over from a line of Republican governors and did about as good as they did.  He would have been crushed if he tried to run again, which he had no intention of doing anyways.

I think Mitt will shrink the size of government because it is patently and obviously clear that this is what has to happen.

Or, Mitt will attempt pander his ass off to get through two terms.  He's a resume checker, just like Soetero.  You think he gave a shit about MA?  He checked the checkbox he'd run a state, then left it.  Apres Mitt, les Deval.

Posted by: Bevel Lemelisk at December 20, 2011 04:22 AM (FkKjr)

78 But Mitt hasn't said he is "okay with the size of government we have today".

Posted by: chemjeff at December 20, 2011 08:10 AM (s7mIC)

I don't think he's the devil either, but I also don't think he's the sort...has the mindset? philosophy? determination?...to take on the drastic changes that have to be made to get us turned around again. If the size of government shrinks under a President Romney, I think he'll be dragged kicking and screaming into going along with it. With - hopefully - a Republican Congress doing the dragging, I'm not sure anything will get done, given the record of the GOP in Congress on such things. You don't know where I'm getting the idea that he's a statist? Where in the world are you getting the impression that he'd chop the federal goverment down to size? This is a guy who thinks it's just fine that the federal government can coerce an individual into buying health insurance, but he's going to decrease the federal interference in our lives once he's president? Is it this notion that it "has to happen"? Folks in charge of printing money might not agree with us on that and just keep spending and printing more.

That said, I suppose it's more an impression with me re: Mitt than any one thing he's said (well, other than refusing to dump Obama/Romneycare into the dustbin of history where it belongs), but he just exudes status quo to me. (shrug) But yes, I'll still vote for him if he's the nominee, but surely not in the primary if I have a choice left by early March.

The MSM continue to exhibit their bias even on simple real news stories.  Egypt actually "had" rare unbelievable antiquities in large quantities and was a historical treasure trove.  But since the people of simple muslim faith "liberated" Egypt, none dare criticize the aftermath.  Not like Iraq at all.

83 Yes Romney is a socialist, so is about half of the Republican party.

First off you have to define "socialism" in a manner more aligned with the original definition and not the one foisted on us by the leftest media. Socialism is NOT the same thing as Communism. The leftists called it that to deflect attention from themselves because socialism has a bad rep.

Socialism was originally defined by Marx (who invented the term) as an intermediate step between capitalism and communism. Socialism simply is a means of economic policy by a government to use public money raised through taxes to implement social programs to benefit a segment of the population (usually low income).  The United States is riff with these kinds of programs that started finding their way into government in the early 1900s.

Communism is a means of economic control in which the government owns the means of production of goods and services and there is no right to "private property". The United States is rapidly marching into that state as fast as the Democrats can push it.

Meanwhile the other bugaboo, Fascism, is similar to Communism except that the government does not own the means of production or private property, it simply controls them through government regulation.  We have been there since the mid 60s.

103 Romney has one huge problem:  Masscare.  It hangs around his neck like a millstone.  The sad part is that he could have deflected it, even turned it to a positive.  "What we did looked good on paper, but it didn't work out in reality.  It didn't do what we thought it would - lower costs, cover the uncovered, etc, and it did a whole host of things we didn't foresee.  Masscare is the poster child for unintended consequences and so is Obamacare.  If it didn't work on the state level it has no chance on the national level."  Had he said something along those lines he would be the clear front runner from the beginning and Perry most likely never would have entered the race.  That he won't disavow Masscare, and recently started talking about "keeping the good" parts of Obamacare is one reason people like me are uneasy about him.

This is a guy who thinks it's just fine that the federal government can coerce an individual into buying health insurance, but he's going to decrease the federal interference in our lives once he's president?

See, this is what I'm referring to.

You want to reduce the size of government so as to decrease federal interference in your life.  I understand that.  I want that for myself too, frankly.

I think Romney would decrease the size of government, but perhaps not due *solely* out of a desire to reduce federal interference in people's lives.  I think his major motivation would be because it is clearly and obviously the correct thing to do from a managerial standpoint.  Would you disagree with that?

But because he wouldn't want to reduce government from a purely ideological or philosophical basis, from that you take away the message that somehow Romney is "okay" with the size of the government we have now, or that he wants to *increase* government?  That is what I don't get.  That is where I think the Mitt-haters jump the shark in their criticism of Mitt.

well look.  The issue of "Ponzi scheme" aside, Perry saying that SS is unconstitutional, and then saying SS won't be touched for current seniors, is inconsistent on some level.  If Perry thinks it's unconstitutional, doesn't that mean Perry would modify, or "touch", SS for current seniors, so as to make it into whatever Perry thinks would be constitutional?  That is what I took away from Romney's "Perry Scheme" jab.

Have you ever heard of John Gibson? He has a radio show. Listen to it some time. He's a moderate, pragmatic GOPer but more fiesty and fun then Mike Medved. He allows libs up 1st on his call lines, that's how Ive come to see how depraved and brainwashed the liberal mind is. Bush spent billions so they think Obama has to spend more to fix his mess. According to them we just gotta ride the recession that won't end out just a little more and we'll be back to a Clinton-type economy! Yes this is what they really think.

144 Rep. Allen West (R-FL) on White House economic adviser Gene Sperling saying Republicans have missed a golden opportunity when it comes to the payroll tax extension agreement.

Rep. Allen West: "I have to tell you, listening to Mr. Sperling, I never met him but he truly did seem to me to be an idiot that was just repeating some very weak talking points. You have to understand one simple thing, the national payroll reporting consortium today came out and said that this two month extension cannot be properly implemented. And who would ever think of economic policy just going for a two month incremental time period?"

153 See, this is what I'm referring to.

You want to reduce the size of government so as to decrease federal interference in your life.  I understand that.  I want that for myself too, frankly.

Not for that reason only. We also can't afford it, unless we're ready for the USA to be a banana republic or worse for the foreseeable future. We already have the right president in place for that...Hugo Chavez, North.

I think Romney would decrease the size of government, but perhaps not due *solely* out of a desire to reduce federal interference in people's lives.  I think his major motivation would be because it is clearly and obviously the correct thing to do from a managerial standpoint.  Would you disagree with that?

I think his econ plan and his record and his temperament all point to tinkering around the edges...at best. The problem is too big for tinkering and some streamling or "synergies created" if you want to use corporate takeover terminology to fix. Best case, if we even got the best case, he'll slow the growth, maybe.

Posted by: chemjeff at December 20, 2011 08:51 AM (s7mIC)

How do you get the message from anything he's said that he'd drastically cut anything? When he can't even bring himself to admit that Obama/Romneycare was a bad (and budget-busting) idea? What is he doing to cut if he won't even agree that one needs cutting? Sounds to me a lot like you're taking "well, I think things will have to be cut drastically" and projecting that onto Romney as "well, of course he'll have to cut drastically after he's elected because that what a good manager would do." When have things ever worked that way in DC?

156 If Perry thinks it's unconstitutional, doesn't that mean Perry would modify, or "touch", SS for current seniors, so as to make it into whatever Perry thinks would be constitutional?

I would argue that someone could think something is unconstitutional but recognize that it can't be sunset right away, particularly a program that many people planned around.  I think you are straining to justify the unjustifiable on Mitt's part.

Perry explicitly said he wouldn't.  To believe otherwise requires you cast aspersions on Perry's motives.  Which is fine, but don't get upset when people do it to Romney.

That is what I took away from Romney's "Perry Scheme" jab.

I took away that Mitt was being a transparent scare-monger.

162 Mallamutt, I have a question you may be able to answer....

My sister and I recently won a title battle over my parents house...long story, won't bore you with the details.  The title was in someone else's name last year and they didn't pay the property taxes.  Per a court order the title is back in our name but penalties and interest have accrued from last year's back taxes.  Are we responsible for the P & I?

I know the taxes go with the property, not the owner but we couldn't have paid the taxes last year even if we wanted to....we were not the owners of record of the property.

The house is in Missouri....if that's pertinent.

That was a lie promulgated by AP. He congratulated Obama on being the nominee but he did not "support" him. What he actually said was that people should not expect him to "automatically support McCain". Now that is entirely understandable. He also criticized the Republican Party leadership which is also understandable.

The actual party contributions record shows that he gave money to the McCain campaign and not to Obama.
