Under Pressure to Reduce Deficit, Congress Tees Up Year-End Spending Spree

The coming year-end spending spree after so much debate over budget deficits shows just how hard it is to stem the government's flow of red ink.

I as about to write one of my own snarky headlines into this link, but I erased it and used FoxÂ’s. Mine would have been in violation of the AOS keep it cool policy. We have been complaining a lot lately about the available candidates, indeed with some saying it just doesnÂ’t matter any more. With clueless assholes like this in Congress it just backs that up.  Its time to start looking for a cabin in the mountains folks.

Former miss USA gets popped for DUI in Highland Park

I wonder if she got on KowalskiÂ’s lawn?  Anyway, IÂ’m glad I am not famous. I was popped for DUI way back in my young salad days when I was single and driving to “The City” looking for chicks in nightclubs instead of driving over there to have a chick stick a needle in my chest and pump in a bag of poison. It didnÂ’t get splashed all over the papers from coast to coast then.

The Hill (and I suspect the rest of the MFM) is doing their job to help Obama in his strategy

Just months ago, the U.S. credit rating was downgraded and Democrats worried Obama was following in the footsteps of one-term President Jimmy Carter. Maybe he will, but reports in the last week suggest manufacturing and construction are humming, and Thanksgiving saw record-setting shopping by consumers.

The icing on the cake? A jobs report Friday shaved nearly half a point off the unemployment rate. The 8.6 percent rate was down from 9 percent in October and is the lowest unemployment has stood in two and a half years.

I said this weeks ago, this is his reelection strategy. So manufacturing is up eh? Is that because all the companies that got bailouts are pumping out product to showrooms that sit and draw dust? Unemployment is down? Is that because the numbers are an outright lie and the MFM is hardly questioning them, at least not The Hill.   The truth is we are mired in a depression and have never got out of it but you would never know that reading the average newspaper are watching the nightly news. (It would be a different story if Bush were still in office, never forget that).

Next on the agenda you will see new “stimulus” projects being implemented from unspent money. It will be spent almost exclusively in toss-up States like VA.

This is the kind of brain dead stupid we get from the Dem PR rags about green shit

While still promoting the stupid AGW scam they push this crap out there.  It is obvious that the MFM is going to continue to ignore all the evidence that the AGC scam is outright fraud pushed by a few select people with the financing of the government, primarily Democrats.

Yes, there is a Moron wing in Japan, although unlike us they are rich

Speeding was identified as a possible cause of what is believed to be one of the world's most expensive ever road accidents when up to £2.6 million-worth of supercars ended up in a crumpled heap on a motorway in Japan.

Ummm...that's not what the article says. The article says that the policies weren't followed and that there's already been an internal investigation as to why not. Arpaio didn't ignore anything - some of his staff apparently dropped the ball and are now likely to face disciplinary action.

I have witnessed several of these on the expressways here in Chicago area.

It seems to always be Asians - maybe Filipinos?  Although, here they seem to be using souped-up compact cars.  They usually do this on weekends as the highways are more open.. but they weave in and out of traffic like crazy.

21 Politico has a 3-page article on how the White House is doing an outreach to black America.

Since I am wise to the Machiavellian spin the White House uses,  my guess is that they are trying to make GOP strategists think they are worried about losing the black vote.   If the article is true,  Obama is going to have trouble getting the inner city types to the polls.

23 As a former Phoenix resident with a strong distaste for the theatrical, annoying, self-promoting Arpaio, I was ready to savage him as I clicked that link. The article, however, appears to be a thinly-sourced hit job. They obviously want you to believe that Arpaio didn't care about molested children of illegals, but when you get down to the details of these cases we find that the perpetrators were also illegals, and when the follow-up investigators went to talk to the families they clammed up and eventually disappeared. It sounds like Arpaio does not run a tight ship, and his sloppy, scandal-ridden office let down dozens of victims of heinous crimes. That's bad enough and worthy of firing. The thinly-veiled accusations of racism were unnecessary and detracted from the article.

Unfortunately, having a lot of Democrat voters - black or otherwise - stay home on election day doesn't mean that there won't be just as many votes "cast" as in 2008. I expect the level of fraud in 2012 to dwarf what was done in 2008.

Most local police forces in the larger cities are armed and equipped much like the military anyhow, just without the discipline and command structure.  I think a goal of the DHS is to put a national police command structure in place.

Compare:

Individuals within the Administration set out to send guns to Mexico via straw purchasers and some of these guns end up getting used to kill Americans. We rightly hold the leaders of the Administration accountable for these crimes.

Individuals within the County PD ignore sex crimes and let complaints go uninvestigated. Your excuse: "policies were violated and this wasn't the leader of the County PD's fault; just police officers under his command."

That excuse demonstrates a level of moral flexibility that should embarrass anyone.

Arpaio is a thug. The fact that you excuse his thuggery because his most frequent victims are liberals, aliens, and journalists is despicable.

-------------

a neighbor who had been 'fun-employed' from a mfg job last year has been working as a part-time seller at a local dealership (for a company who will remain nameless but that took a lot of obama-cash and sells trucks named after animals) asked about the large amount of inventory and the weekly deliveries of new cars and trucks when sales were at all time lows.

His sales managers answer was that they had to take a 'certain number of dogs so that they could get any of the good vehicles'

Rumors are also that some of the vehicles have been sent 'on consignment' not sold to the dealers.

54 For the legal experts, how is the Obama/Holder Federal prosecution against the State of AZ, preventing law enforcement from performing law enforcement, influencing law enforcement job performance in El Mirage, Maricopa County? What sort of prosecution faces members of the law enforcement community when dealing with illegal aliens? Catch-22

The City of El Mirage contracted services from the Maricopa County Sheriff Dept. for a wide range of police protection from 2005 through mid-October 2007, after the city's police department had been criticized in an audit as poorly organized, loosely supervised and mismanaged. El Mirage city police and detectives stayed on the job, and failed themselves.  The sheriff's internal effort to determine what had gone wrong with the sex-crimes investigations was twice derailed. Currently aside from Arpaio who is waiting for the investigation to conclude, El Mirage Detective Jerry Laird and Bill Louis, then-assistant El Mirage police chief are finger pointing in CYA mode. Their own friends couldn't possibly be responsible for sitting on their thumbs. What were these poorly organized, loosely supervised and mismanaged professionals doing to follow up on reports in their own office?

58 To compete is to win. Putin's popularity isn't as great, but still exists in Russia. These are rough economic times globally. As anywhere, Russians want a strong leader. Fraud or not, Putin's expected to win easily in March though his margin of victory depends on the margin of fraud. 59 @ 6.   The economy sucks.  The MFM has been talking it up with half-truths but the truth is many people gave up looking for work and retail sales going up don't mean a damn thing unless profits have gone up too.  A store can sell all the flat-screen t.v.'s they want to at $200 off retail, but what kind of profit does it leave them?  Sure they get credit for selling the t.v.'s but without profit what good is the sale?  People, if they have the money, will shop for a bargain or a need but don't tell me folks are happily hitting the malls to max-out their credit cards.

Yeah, it has been weird this fall. We have gone back and forth between 26 and 70 with some days in Nov as high as 80. It is supposed to be in the 70s today as well.

I'm sure the warmies will hale it as proof of globull warming.

All that being said, Nov did turn out to have the average daily high about 3° higher than last Nov. However, the last Nov was colder than the previous.

One of the "talking heads" explained that suspended crap Saturday. It allows him to still collect contributions under the election finance laws. If he officially terminated it he would have to quit collecting money and figure out what he would do with any money that was left over. Personally though, I think he is in the hole financially.

Morning, all!

I don't come bearing any great insights into the worlds of politics, economics, or international relations this morning, but I do come bearing a little insight into human nature.

This morning I had reason to wonder what 15cm would measure when converted to inches.  I typed the question "15cm in inches" into my handy Google search box and clicked the little magnifying glass.

(The answer, for those wondering, is 5.9", plus a bit)

Anyone care to guess what the very first search result was?

No, not Yahoo! answers.

No, not a measurement conversion website.

No, not the Office of Weights and Measures.

The very first search result for the question "15cm in inches" is...

...the Wikipedia entry for Human Penis Size.

Discuss.

105 That would be nice if I didn't have to have anything repaired. Just have to figure out what item is the problem. Questions: When the circuit trips, do you reset it using the outlet in the bathroom, or do you have to go to the panel? If you reset at the panel, is the breaker significantly different (usually marked GFCI, fills two spots, and has a reset button)? It could well be that you are overloading the circuit, but you'd have to run multiple dozens of strings to overload a 15-amp circuit. The best way to find a fault in the strings would be to look for discoloration in the plugs and outlets where you chain them. My guess would be that the problem is with the faceplate on your outdoor outlet. They have weatherproofing gasket cutouts that go bad over time. Or, if the outlet is on a brick or stucco part of the house, the gasket may never have sealed, and you may need to use silicone to weatherproof it.

107 Arpaio is a thug. The fact that you excuse his thuggery because his most frequent victims are liberals, aliens, and journalists is despicable.

I've read the pieces you have put up about Arpaio and they have made me wonder about the man but I am cautious about swallowing the negative reporting on any "conservative" until the gavel comes down.
Call it the Herman Cain syndrome. For those of us who didn't hate him off the bat, the charges looked bad but waiting for the other shoe to drop allowed the revelation that some of the accusers were serial filers of harassment cases and then there was the announcement of the big joint presser that mysteriously never happened. Now it looks like the gavel has finally come down but even if the man had an affair it doesn't mean the rest wasn't fishing and dirty politics.
Which brings us to your assumption that anyone who doesn't jump on the Hate Arpaio train is a racist-

Posted by: nevergiveup at December 05, 2011 08:56 AM (i6RpT) ------------------------ Because the NFL has lost a generation of male viewers who must be replaced.....apparently by women. Guys of my generation, who began watching the NFL in the early 70's, have stopped watching due to the onset of me-me-me, shuck-and-jive thuggery. You see, my generation never saw Jack Ham make a tackle, separate himself from his teammates, and dance a jig......for simply making a tackle. In my generation, end zone celebrations were a novelty. Billy "White Shoes" Johnson anyone? I could go on and on but basically, for us, the NFL today represents the worst of American culture. Greed, commercialism, selfishness, indecency, immorality, etc..... It's no surprise that a guy like Tim Tebow, who should be CELEBRATED as an example, is mocked and denigrated by fellow players, ESPN, and other talking heads. 'Only one Jew' now in Afghanistan
A 45-year-old man is believed to have become the last Jew in Afghanistan after the death of the caretaker of the only functioning synagogue in Kabul.

It has emerged that the caretaker, Ishaq Levin, aged about 80, died of natural causes about a week ago. His Jewish neighbour, Zebulon Simentov, lived with Mr Levin in the synagogue. Correspondents say that around 5,000 Afghan Jews left the country after the creation of Israel in 1948, with others leaving after the 1979 Soviet invasion.

The death of the man believed to be his only co-religionist does not seem to be a source of grievance for Mr Simentov. "He was a very bad man who tried to get me killed," he told the Associated Press news agency, "and now I am the Jew here, I am the boss." Correspondents say that the two men were at loggerheads for some time, with both vying for control of the synagogue and both saying that they had been tortured under Afghanistan's hardline Taleban regime. Mr Levin said before his death that he had been publicly accused by Mr Simentov of converting to Islam so that Mr Simentov could take over the running of the building. Mr Simentov blames Mr Levin for the loss of the synagogue's most sacred treasure - a copy of the Jewish holy book, The Torah, which he says was confiscated by the hardline Islamic Taleban regime.

Worldwide Jewish organisations say that Jews have been in Afghanistan since the eighth century, mostly in Kabul and Herat. But in recent times many have emigrated to Central Asia and India.

The problem is, Gabe, that article doesn't say what you say it does.  Municipal cops, who were being "supervised" by the sheriff's office because the department was corrupt and sloppily doing their jobs, didn't do their jobs.  Now, you can say that's the sheriff's fault, but anybody who knows anything about law enforcement knows there are sometimes deep divides between departments, often the worst of which are between municipalities and counties.

If Sheriff Joe dropped the ball here, I don't see it.

"So, by writing it this way, he has protected his legal conclusions by enshrining their factual predicates.

Now there's nothing improper about that, generally. For example, in a bench trial for theft, if the judge determines that the defendant stole from the victim, well, of course he's going to make that factual finding. The legal conclusion that the defendant is guilty follows. It makes sense that the appeals courts would give deference to that factual finding because the trial judge was in the room, got to see all the testimony and evidence. He's "closer" to the facts, so his understanding of the facts gets some deference. On the other hand, the trial judge has no more facility with the legal question -- whether the determined facts add up to a conviction -- than the appeals courts, so there's no deference.

But it's a more difficult situation when we're not talking about obviously factual determinations. Judge Walker made a factual finding that sexual orientation is a fundamental characteristic of a human being. Eesh, "fundamental characteristic" sounds awfully legalistic to me. And his second factual finding, that California has no marital requirement of fertility, goes a long way towards tossing out the proponents' entire argument that traditional marriage is necessary to promote procreation and a stable environment for child-rearing."

147 Posted by: Gabriel Malor at December 05, 2011 10:49 AM (XBUdh) So, your criticism of the decision is the Judge planted axioms? He had biases that he inserted in his work that made his conclusions seem inevitable? And maybe he could not even see how he was doing that?

151 This is an "Old News" Arpiao story being re-released..nearly word for word, from a year ago. Missing from this version is that the "town" in question was not fully paying their bills for the sheriff's services and wanted out of what they owed.

Guess you have to be a lawyer to find the 'criticism' in there.

True story: Prop 8 Petitioners went with exactly the argument I made---that J. Walker's factual conclusions aren't factual at all, but really just legal conclusions in disguise---in their appeal to the 9th Circuit. Yes, it was lawyerly. Then again, I am a lawyer, aren't I?

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at December 05, 2011 07:15 AM (XBUdh)

154 And I have repeatedly had to point this out to EoJ, as he makes this very same accusation about once a month. Get a new fib, man, this one's stale. What you wrote about Sheriff Apraio (rightly or wrongly) could objectively be construed as "criticism." The post you wrote about Judge Walker's decision which I read along with the comments, in their entirety, BEFORE I posted, could objectively be viewed as "non-crtitical to mildly approving." And nowhere did you appear in the comments to explain or clarify your position. "Fibbing", my ass. If you think I'm a liar, call me a fucking liar.

The difference between F&F and Arpaio's situation is that F&F was policy, approved from the very top. That's why those at the top are hopefully going to fall. Arpaio may eventually be shown to have been negligent in his management of his department. Or, he may not. But right now, all the article you linked tells us is that not pursuing those sex crime investigations was against his policy, that he has conducted an investigation on the matter, and that disciplinary action is pending.

Arpaio is a thug. The fact that you excuse his thuggery because his most frequent victims are liberals, aliens, and journalists is despicable.

It could well be that Arpaio is a thug, but that's not demonstrated or corroborated by this article.

And if you did not intend it that way, you still impute ugly motives to people who disagree with you.

Very lefthanded of you.

158 Correction. I read Gabe's initial post on the decision in Perry. I have since gone back and read his follow-up post and his responses in the comments. My opinion stands. Walker's findings of "fact" including all his prognosticating about possible future outcomes and outright false assertions of the recognition and normalization of same-sex relationships are not characterized by Gabe as a thuggish attempt by one of our gay robed masters to impose his preferences against the express wishes of the voters but rather in a "eeehhhh, I dunno. Legally, that one is kind of weak." That's not criticism. And keep in mind your later comments, Gabe - you favor legal gay marriage and expressed a desire to get married someday. My opinion on that is not the issue. If indeed you do agree that this was a ham-fisted abuse of power, albeit with an outcome that benefits you personally, where do I find that scathing rebuke?

160 You're re-writing history again. Judge Walker wasn't out then. That weakens my argument how, exactly? He waited until he left the bench, after he had ruled in Perry, to disclose that he was in a 10-year same-sex relationship with a doctor. If anything, it's even more cause for alarm.

Sorry. I really have had some bad experiences.

I did not read the criticism of Arpaio as being based upon his racism. And I do not like him. Perry went toes up to me when he campaigned with him.

Yeah, if we're disclosing our biases, something I thought lawyers and judges are required to do, I strongly suspect guys like Arpaio really are thugs and racists.  And as a Perry supporter, I'd like to believe everyone who also supports Perry is a fine, upstanding citizen.  Alas, that's not always the case, and I would prefer Perry to distance himself from someone like Arpaio, not embrace him.

Whatever your biases, Gabe, facts are facts, and this little article doesn't do what you suggest it does to discredit Arpaio.  Try again.

Posted by: Burt TC at December 05, 2011 08:16 AM (TOk1P)

164 Arpaio is a thug. The fact that you excuse his thuggery because his most frequent victims are liberals, aliens, and journalists is despicable. Every other aspect of this aside, if Arpaio is a thug, it is in no way despicable to excuse Arpaio's thuggery against liberals and journalists. We either have the rule of law, or we don't. Right now, we don't. Journalists and liberals are two of the biggest reasons why we don't. The collectivist left has marshaled outright thuggery and political correctness to create an a la carte abomination of the rule of law. The ratchet turns in only one direction, and that direction is the suppression of rights that stand in the way of their will to power and the creation and strengthening of laws that expand the scope and cement their hold on power. At one level, it is admirable to oppose a thug on principle, but at a higher level, it is counterproductive in the face of higher stakes. The end can justify the means.

I hate to stick my nose in an argument............oh heck, yes I do. It seems you Gabe are here creating a strawman. You are attempting to argue facts that have not been presented. Strike one. You are attempting to state that because not being outed at the time, proves that he is not a gay robed master. Therefore arguing against facts that have been presented. Strike two. You stating that someone has rewritten history here is a lie, you are again presenting something as fact where there is no evidence presented, only your foolish attempt to get someone to take the eye off of the actual argument. Strike three.

Please tell me you are not a criminal attorney, I would hate to see how many innocent people are spending time because of your failure at debate.

Posted by: David Kramer at December 05, 2011 08:40 AM (OkW7e)

166 As for Arpaio being a thug, what exactly is the definition of "thug"? Someone that fervently and judiciously enforces the laws? Can someone give me some "actual" crimes that he has been prosecuted for? Or how about something he has been found guilty of? No? Thought not.

Everyone that thinks Arpaio is a "thug", how do you feel about Dupnick? Are you as "judicious" with your descriptions of him?

You're an idiot. Jeff demanded to know why I didn't go off about thuggery by a gay judge trying to impose his preferences at a time when we didn't know the judge was gay. Since you apparently have trouble with reading comprehension let me rephrase my reply to Jeff. I'll use small words:

Dear Jeff, I didn't go crazy denouncing Judge Walker's imposition of his preferences in the Prop 8 case because I didn't know he was gay at the time. Your suggestion that I did know rewrites history. Love, Gabe.

168 As far as I can tell, the attack on Arpaio will be going to further and further extremes in the next year. I guess it has nothing to do with the fact, that I have read that Obama, will not be allowed to have his name on the ballot in Arpaio's county unless he provides documentation, not ethereal or virtual, of his Constitutional eligibility

Another "great" lawyerly (I know, not proper English) argument. An ad hominem. Great.

I only "attacked" your one comment because of the lack of debate etiquette. I do not care if you like or love Judge Walkers preferences in the Prop 8 case. It seems you should extricate yourself from the discussion because you have bias involved. You know, maybe recuse yourself from the discussion. By the way, marriage is between a man and a woman. Civil unions do not have anything to do with marriage. I could marry a woman right now, yet the government would not have any say or decision in the matter because I would not get a marriage "license". Marriage has NOTHING to do with government. It never has and it NEVER will.

It is a strawman created by our government to entrench itself in our lives.

Just giving you my position on the debate in the whole marriage and gay civil union debate so you have reference.

By the way, are you a criminal attorney? Is that what got you all hot and bothered? Of course nowadays, even criminal attorneys have very little court experience or debate experience. They just use the ol plea bargaining to abrogate the rights of their clients.

Ok we can pretend that all the "aliens' do not tend to be of the same racial makeup. Then Gabe has hysterically charged xenophobia instead of racism.
And I offered to take Gabe at his word that I am misunderstanding him which would still leave the imputation of bad motive to people who don't jump to his side.

Remember: I stated (famously) that Gabe's posts about Arpaio had made me wonder about him. If Gabe doesn't go about berating those who don't immediately agree with him, his argument is stronger and could win out.

171 Dear Jeff, I didn't go crazy denouncing Judge Walker's imposition of his preferences in the Prop 8 case because I didn't know he was gay at the time. That's a fair point, but it doesn't address your treatment of Judge Walker's decision. Then or now. Again, it's the contrast between how we treat actions by people we dislike vs. actions by people we would normally denounce, except when they benefit us personally. I think it's easy to lay out a case for abuse of judicial power in the Perry decision. It's on record. There have been no such conclusions about Arpaio. I didn't attempt to rewrite history. You inferred that. XXXOOO, Jeff

172 There is a consistent pattern by Gabe about Sheriff Joe. At some point considering Gabe's sexual orientation it is not out of bounds to speculate that Gabe has a problem not so much with the Sheriff, but with masculinity, perhaps over-the-top masculinity. Still Sheriff Joe is a national figure that has taken on the outlaw attitude toward our border of the Obama Admin and paid a heavy price with constant investigations, and outright bitchiness from local media and now Gabe who is a good blogger, except when it comes to Sheriff Joe. God forbid we still have MEN in this country in public office.

173 Previously, when it was the tiff between Arpaio and the latest generation of non-libertarian-Republican Phx Goldwater sons think-tank, Gabe enjoyed poking illiterates in the ass with ridicule rather than offer constructive pro bono advice.

Having a difference of opinion is natural. But when racism isn't the cause of different opinions, to constantly pull out the race card against those with ideological differences is a sign of ideological illiteracy.

because he said some bad things about Gingrich?

I think there is some of that.  Many of the Newtiphiles, former Cainiacs, post Perrites, and forlorn BachMen, are all latching on to Newt.  Do not make waves, do not expose Newt for the washington insiders scumbag that he is, because Newt is the last Redjack!  If Newt goes down before the primaries - Romney gets the nomination.  So Newt must be held together long enough to make it through the primaries - vetting is to be frowned upon.  Sure in the general the Dems are going to release the giant crap dam known as Newt's life, but at least Romney will be defeated...
