The big news from Monday is that Dwayn Johnson, aka The Rock, has returned to the WWE for an indefinite, but signifigant, period as a professional wrestler.

And my wife nearly threw her soiled panties at the TV screen when she saw him.

Somehow, I ended up being the bad guy for being merely pleased and not super-orgasmic at his return to the squared circle.

9 When impeached, being asked why he'd broken his oath of office with criminal acts, Clinton said "Because I could."

Gelman - who sources said appeared to be on drugs - dropped a blood-stained 10-inch knife in the struggle. He was taken to the NYC 61st Precinct stationhouse, where cops asked him why so many people were killed or hurt. "Why?! Because I say so!"

The Leaf takes 6 hours to regenerate its battery? That's just ridiculously inconvenient.

Electric rates gone astronomical in order to subsidize building solar power outside Austin City Limits.

For about $30. flat fee, the City of Austin will allow electric cars unlimited electricity for six months.

Awfully convenient for those inconvenienced with electric car ownership responsibility burdens, passing the cost to every other electric utility customer to pay for what the vast majority are not getting and never requested.

28 saw a headline on drudge which says each person owes 12000 each to pay of the debt.

I have an idea.   Why doesn't uncle ben open the fed window to the American people.  Loan each of us the money at the interest he's loaning it to the banks and then allow us to pay off the debt, with each of us owning $12 grand.  They would let you deduct it from your income tax too.

Then the debt would be extinguished, well not really but, at least we, the American people would own our own debt and control our own destiny without anyone else in the mix.

A variant on the Ponzi scheme, green energy consists of promises (fantastic performance right around the corner), subsidies (since the free/real market cannot find a cost efficient method of production mostly due to the laws of physics and the existence of campaign contributors like GE), and passing the cost along to others (a de facto wealth transfer scheme to ensure you will support green energy even if you would prefer to stay off the green grid).

The next step is, of course, adding solar panels to high speed trains.  The trains will run on time, just not at night or on really cloudy days.

In Delaware, The Narrative is advanced each day. From the local paper this morning from a WaPo reporter:

"Fueled by tea party fervor, some Republicans say they are willing to shut down the government to force fiscal restraint. while Democrats are courting independent voters with a more judicious approach."

33 Yeah, I don't blame you Jay...some shit is just too hard to spin....

Newly installed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney spent his first day on the job officially staying away from the White House briefing room.

Carney, who replaces former Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, decided not to speak to the nation today. The decision surprised and disappointed White House reporters, who presumably will have to wait until Tuesday to get a crack at President ObamaÂ’s new spokesman.

snip~

Normally on “budget day,” a briefing by the OMB director and possibly other economic aides is followed by an appearance by the press secretary, who is more adept at “spinning” the all-important document and who can also clean up any mistakes made by his wonkish colleagues. Last year, Gibbs briefed soon after Obama’s economic advisers were finished.

34 Batchelor had his car expert on last night.  she was on with a guy from the GM division that is doing research on hydrogen fuel cells.  All the money has been pulled from hydrogen fuel cells.  She presented a great case as to why the government should continue funding both technologies as it seems they feed off one another.  Oddly enough my mom was listening and she said the car expert described exactly what used to go on within the space program.  My mom said a lot of the stuff that we take for granted now came out of research in the space program.

One of the interesting things Batchlor's car expert said was that every president seems to decide which technology they like and only fund that one and that this is what is holding us back, she thinks they should fund both and it will benefit all.

If you have a chance, listen to the podcast, it was on before ten pm as I was driving while listening.  It was a very fascinating discussion.

39 Dear Golly, a learn-about-condoms-bus (and an ad campaign!) sponsored by San Fran.:

Other public health departments around the country are promoting FC2 to help stop unintended pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. But San Francisco's health department is taking it a step further: designing a citywide marketing campaign that not only appeals to women, but includes gay men using the product during anal sex.

Soon, you'll see posters promoting the FC2 on Muni buses. (We hear the Metropolitan Transportation Agency was a bit particular on what they would allow on the posters. No surprise considering the bus posters for the health department's Healthy Penis campaign to promote syphilis testing could only include talking cartoon penises if they wore little outfits.)

Health outreach workers will also distribute posters and cards promoting FC2 at community agencies and businesses.

Staffers in the department's STD and HIV prevention sections will be at Civic Center Plaza at noon Monday to kick off the campaign. The Teacher Bus - a classroom on wheels - will appear around the city throughout the afternoon to distribute free packs of mints, chocolates and female condoms.

Lastly but most important, flurry of activity coming out of Issa office very recently.  Whispers now circulating something “concrete” has been found by Issa that is harmful to White House.  Enough so that legal reps from White House most recently met directly with Issa office.  Actually believe the Bill Daley appointment made in part to also help assist in heading that situation off in favor of the WH.  I still donÂ’t trust Issa to follow through.  Fear he has gotten too cozy with WH but I could be wrong.  I hope so.  As to that something “concrete” is it related to the scandal I maintain is out there festering?  Birther related?  Not certain, but an important thing to realize the growing number of Dems who are hopeful that is the case.  That is a huge shift from just this time last year.  More and more of us are increasingly angry at this administration and the damage it has done to so many inside the party

Last time Mark Steyn subbed for Rush, he took a call with a similar take on "solving" our national debt. Steyn said that the problem would not be solved by either taxpayers or donors paying the debt UNTIL the government stops spending as they do. Wipe the slate clean, and given the same spending habits, the overspending and debt reoccur perpetually.

Whether he meant to or not, Steyn's point substantiates the Ron Paul and Rand Paul congressional economic agenda.

I guess I thought that was sort of understood.

A friend of mine payed off her credit cards. I said to her, now you have to cut them up or put them in the freezer which is literally what a lot of my friends are doing.  She said after doing the payoff she will not get into debt again,  she has learned her lesson.  yesterday she told me she is already a grand in debt.  It's all stuff that she had no choice about, her car died, but, had she not been able to whip out the credit card, maybe she would have had to come up with another solution to pay for the car repairs.

My friends aren't giving up their cards.  They are afraid if they do they won't be able to get cards again.  Thus the idea of putting them in glad ware in water in the freezer is really catching on.

82 One of my friends was telling a bunch of us, all college grads, some docs, some lawyers, some MBA's and a couple of master's degree, some working towards PHD"s at a get together, that the average auto worker on the line makes about 70 grand.  This came up in response to someone bringing up their bonuses.  A lot of my friends are carrying enormous debt in order to fund their educations.  They are all working but they aren't being paid what someone in their position would have commanded during the Bush years.  They were shocked and angry that "someone who is basically putting together IKEA furniture is making that kind of money" and getting a bonus.  When their salaries are way less than that in the private sector.  I mean these people were really angry about this.  Is that true, does your average line person auto worker make that much money or was our friend just trying to get a rise out of us?

84 81 I put on beck and I'm listening to him do the commercial for his wife's weight loss program.  He says she works out all the time.  She must be wonder woman, she works out, she home schools.  She has to have an army of helpers and a hired certified school teacher to get all that done.  But he's not telling us that, is he?

OK, just stop.  Eat a little less + exercise a little more=lose weight.  I spend around ten minutes a day that covers what I did for basic PT in the Marines (minus the running).  There are whole curricula and materials available for home schooling.  It is not like she has to pull it out her (hush yo' mouth!).

It's true.  Some of my in-laws work in a GM parts factory and can make $100,000 with overtime.  Plus, they don't have to work Saturday, or even the week, and still make 2x for working Sunday. Plus, if they take voluntary lay-off they make 3/4 wage plus collect unemployment.  Basically, they make more money not working.

It like that stupid "paying farmers not to farm" stuff.  Why don't they just cut that program, bet we'd get tons of money back on that one.

88 Hard to say curious, what advanced degree you'd have, not to know where the goddamned hell fuel cells even came from. You're telling me that lawyers and PhD candidates don't know the difference between take-home pay and total cost to employer...I'm inclined to believe you.

1. Yes, auto workers are paid quite a lot more than the market will bear.

2. The figures you will hear bandied about are "management" figures. They represent the amount the person "makes," with all the cut-outs, deductions and take-aways included, plus the cost of having a person on the payroll, things like payments into mandated benefits plans the employee may or may not use, the cost of safety oversight for the workplace divided by the number of bodies passing through it, the projected value of sick leave, disability, and vacation (whether or not used), and the like. It will always be a scary number, and will always piss off the people you seem to be avoiding in your "bunch" because they never see a third of that in their greasy non-degreed palm. It's a fair number, in planning for hiring (or not), but useless for, like, signing a mortgage, paying the bar tab at the bowling alley, or buying yet another bass boat, which is how the little people spend their cash.

Seriously, my friends sibs, with their batchelor's degrees are making between twenty and forty grand, they took months to find their jobs  and they are so happy to have the jobs they didn't even think to question how little they are being paid in salary.  Plus they aren't working 9 to 5,  any of them.  They are all working long hours for very little money.

One right by where I live that couldn't get built due to issues about water required to keep dust of the collectors and the possibility of dust getting into the air during construction.

I don't care what anyone makes on their own.

The problem with GM and Gov workers their asking me to subsidize some of that wealth.

GM and many gov have over promised their workers compensation to what the company or state can pay and now they want me to bail them out when they already make more than me. That pisses me off.

I'm not knocking the auto workers or the farmers or the public employees.  What I'm saying is that they need to be in line with the private sector or the private sector needs to raise salaries fast.

WASHINGTON—The White House projected Monday that the federal deficit would spike to $1.65 trillion in the current fiscal year, the largest dollar amount ever, adding pressure on Democrats and Republicans to tackle growing levels of debt.

The proposed budget seeks to prevent many middle-class Americans from being subjected to the Alternative Minimum Tax, which would raise their tax bills, for three years starting in fiscal 2012. To cover the cost, the administration would put new limits on the ability of the wealthiest earners to utilize tax deductions to lower their tax burden, among them deductions for charitable contributions and mortgage interest.

President Obama released his budget this morning.  Rather than focusing on WashingtonÂ’s over-spending problem, the budget calls for higher taxes on families and small businesses to pay for even more government spending.  Under the Obama budget, tax revenues will grow from 14.4% of GDP in 2011 to 20% of GDP in 2021.  By comparison, the historical average is only 18% of GDP.

Add it all together, and this budget is a ten-year, $1.5 trillion tax hike over present law.  ThatÂ’s $1.5 trillion taken out of the economy and spent on government instead of being used to create jobs.

The “tax relief” in the budget is mostly just an extension of present law, and also some refundable credit outlay spending in the tax code.  There is virtually no new tax relief relative to present law in the PresidentÂ’s budget.

Thank you King Barry

That's what I meant by "which dazzles some".  Other than this, or making connections with the others who HAVE to get their MBAs to move up (or as with our example, making connections with heirs who have ready-made businesses waiting for them) there is no actual value in pursuing an MBA.  In fact, studying for an MBA is pretty strong evidence of idiocy.

I see Berlusconi has been indicted on charges that he paid a teen for sex.

A couple of things.  First, the teen was 17.  I don't know why the media always uses "teen".  In fact, she was legally working as a "dancer."

Second, the crime isn't underage sex, it's underage solicitation.  The age of consent in Italy is 14.  Yes, that's right, 14.  But the age of consent for selling sexual services is 18.

So, yes, if he paid for her a year later, that would be legal also.

So don't be surprised if he gets off.  I mean, again.  I mean, is not prosecuted.

One of them even told a BO commercial where he says to get a degree, to shut up.  I was prompted to say "trouble in paradise with you and the prez?"

You want to make me out to be some kind of education bigot, I"m not, I"m just saying that a lot of promises are made by these universities and they aren't coming to fruition.  Education is a billion dollar business.

151 First, the teen was 17.  I don't know why the media always uses "teen".

So you think she's younger and thus more helpless.  I've noticed in the US, they'll refer to 19-year-olds as "teens", particularly when they want to inflate statistics (a married 19-yo HS graduate having a baby is different than a 14-yo, but they're all "teen pregnancies").

Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at February 15, 2011 09:54 AM (0IPsJ)

That's the scam.  Someone who can pass the bar, but never went to law school, just isn't allowed to even take the exam.  Meanwhile, we have retards, like the Kennedy clan, who go to the best law school around, pass and get their degrees, but can't pass a simple test with numerous attempts.  It's really pathetic.

That said, I think that one or two state bars have moved to allow regular folks to take the bar exam.  I'm not sure, but I recall hearing this.

Well, that's pretty silly.  MBAs law degrees are about the most useless degrees out there.  The only reason that MBAs law degrees are of any value (other than the certificate, which dazzles some) is to make connections.  There's nothing of any great value in the MBA law degree curriculum, and certainly nothing that a person couldn't pretty easily learn all on his own, at no cost.

He probably assumed she was 18 because of her job.  According to the article I read, she's denying getting paid.

I don't know if he'll go with a defense of "I didn't know she was 17" or "I never paid her for sex" or first one then the other, but I don't think he'll be prosecuted.  I'm sure this is designed to have a political effect, not a legal one.

The opposition wants him to step down.  His roguishness is part of his popularity and his party likes having his charisma.  But I can't see how a country with an age of consent law of 14 and legal prostitution is truly scandalized by this.

160 144 Something important to teach your children weather or not they are going on to get a degree is how to fix things.

My father who happens to be a Dr spent a lot of time teaching us plumbing, electrical and carpentry (I learned engines from friends).

166 Stolen from the interwebz just for perspective:

The Obama budget doesn't cut a penny from the deficit in the last seven months of fiscal 2011. Over the next three years—through 2013—the spending reductions in this budget add up to a paltry $20 billion net, out of a projected $3.5 trillion deficit. That's a 0.57% reduction in red ink and less than what the feds spend every two days.

Have a magical day.

Of course, the truly funny (?) part is that we generally have the right to defend ourselves in court.  SO, if the government is coming after me, I can be my own lawyer (without having gone to law school) but I'm not allowed to take the bar.

Of course, these genius lawyers (and the MBAs, too) have had no problem with management buyouts of public companies, which is about the most outrageous conflict of interest one could possibly imagine - those hired to protect the interests of the shareholders using their access to private information, necessary for that job, in order to deal against those same shareholders .. while they're still employees, even!

Heather, I would agree with you but these companies aren't making enough to pay these wages.

I am all for paying what the market will bear, but lets face it, these car companies  and subsidized almost entirely by us.

If GM were making money hand over fist then i wouldn't care if they paid their employees a million dollars a year, but the fact is that they aren't making money. They are losing money, our money.

If you're a private company you can do what you want, but  GM and Chysler aren't private companies. They are quasi-state owned enterprises that now know they can be as fiscally irresponsible as they want because the government has decided they are too big to fail.

So in theory i agree with you. You can pay people what you want if you can afford it, but this isn't the case in the american car industry.

I'm very much against the bonuses at GM and Chrysler, but, as with the banks, the federal government gave them the money without any strings, so they have every right to drain the companies dry before they worry about paying us back.

Of course, I ... and you and everyone else here opposed the federal government buying or bailing out GM and Chrysler, so we would have not run into this problem to begin with.  But, we had no say in the matter, and we certainly had no say in how those loans/grants/equity buys happened.  On top of that, the bailouts were totally un-Constitutional, so they never should have happened because of that ...

After the screwing over of the bond-holders and the illegal payouts of equity to the unions (which are the same unions that bargain with the last, non-government American automaker) this is small potatoes.

Someday, if there is justice, lots of these people will find themselves stripped of all assets and sitting in jail somewhere.

Bitching and moaning doesn't mean a whole lot. We used to say in the Navy "A bitching sailor is a happy sailor". It worked the same way at my last job. Everybody bitched about their job all the time. It WAS a high pressure job and bitching was a way to release.

But I have seen bad supervisors come in and within a year the bitching stopped and open hostility and quite grumbling began. It wasn't long before the exodus started then. When that happens you know one of two things is going to happen, Either the bosses are going to get straightened out or the place will go to hell.

After many years, the gears just get worn down.  As long as you've tried the reset button on the bottom, and tried to loosed the teeth inside, and made sure nothing is freezing them up (potato peels, celery, coffee grinds, etc)  If it isn't any of those, then I can't help you.   You can also put your sprayer down it and spray all sides just to make sure it isn't a piece of food you can't feel).  Changing one out isn't as easy as the make it sound though.  Good luck!

It stopped working and my landlord refused to fix it.  In fact, he said he'd charge me $300 to fix it because he had warned me.

He was an asshole, but I learned how to fix them

and then to learn that an auto worker, someone who probably has just a high school education, is commanding that kind of salary

Yup, there it is.  "How dare someone with just a high school education make money when there are girls in NYC with expensive college degrees (in what?) who aren't?!"

You might not see it as sneering, but that's how it's coming across.

1) I'm paying those bastards.

2) Ninety-nine percent of those bastards got cushy union jobs because of someone they knew, not because of their skills, training or education. In many cases management is guilty for caving to union demands but the courts and government have made the playing field tilted in favor of unions.

I have nothing against someone without a college degree who works their way to the top or takes a chance starting a business and succeeds. But these auto workers aren't them. I busted my ass off in school and incurred a lot of college debt while dimwitted classmates disrupted the teacher, flunked classes and got a better paying union job than I could get because of their uncle. They didn't do a damned thing to earn it, so in my eyes they don't deserve it.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way, too. But I only had to learn it once.

A plumber friend says to let the water run for a while after grinding to flush to line, seems to work.

Thank you. I did the whole hex tool in the bottom and it turns just fine...but it won't turn. So either it's really really dead or it could be fixed, but why bother when it gets cranky every couple weeks and is leaking. It was unpopped popcorn kernels that done killed it...and it was me, not the kids.

On most disposals, if you overheat the motor it will trip a breaker and the disposal won't come back on until you reset it. Look for a red button (or some sort of button/switch) and push it in. If it doesn't work then you're prolly SOL.

Glad to know that I am not alone in noticing that neither the Obama children nor Mrs. O travelled to visit the greatgrandmother on her deathbed. Weird at the time. Weirder considering how easy it is for them to vacation in Hawaii now at the drop of a hat. Tells me all I needed to know about the man.

Re: no jobs for degree holders. Unfortunately they still believe in the American Creed, one skillfully exploited by President Clinton: "work hard and play by the rules." Surefire advice from manipulative cheaters. BTW the rules have changed. That's what their peers [or maybe they] voted for. Wasn't it Mencken who said "Give the people what they want. Good and hard."

This is from Dec. but it is a MUST READ.  Make -a-wish is amazing.  Ordinary people are amazing.  One little boy is a hero!

Ed, did the reset button. And it's humming, so I know it's getting power. I can turn it from inside it and from the bottom with the hex tool, so I don't really know why it won't turn when it's powered on.

219 I'm sorry it's a little hard to take.

Smear Snear. There's a mighty distinction, curious.

As if this is the first time that college students timed graduation with a dumpy economy. As if it's a revelation that union workers have what they do.

Boo hoo hoo, economic reality check. "It's the spending, stupid."  Our economic ruin has been a long time in the making, nothing subtle about it. And this from a PhD in the Fine Arts. Do what you can with what you have, and while you're working hard to get by, quit whining about what opportunities that you were betting on being stable for YOU at least. After all, you deserve better, GAG.

223 154 I think you need one to sit for the bar exam in most states too.
Posted by: A Balrog of Morgoth at February 15, 2011 09:54 AM (0IPsJ)

Here in WA, you don't need to go to law school to take the bar exam.  But you will need to be mentored by a licensed attorney for several years before being able to practice on your own.  I don't think Virginia or Wyoming require a law degree either, as well as a handful of other states.

224 OY!

Fast forward to 2011 and there are still people who are looking for the kind of love that they see embodied in the First Couple.

Alphanista.com has a monthly feature titled, My Future Obama. According to Alphanista’s press release, “this feature highlights eligible bachelors from around the country … applauds the country’s finest, most successful men who, much like President Barack Obama, are poised to contribute greatness to this society.”

Plus they have a 'Palin Insider' but I haven't had time to read those scoops yet.

Well, maybe you should read them, because they are so effin stupid that even my dog would know that they're bullshit.   Are you serious?   Srsly?   You would read those so-called transcripts of Palin phone calls and believe them?

Puhleaze.

Hey, anyone remember my post #80 yesterday in the San Diego WMD thread?

Look what Andy put in the sidebar. "Defector admits to lying about WMDs". Lords of Kobol, I hate being right.
