City denies annexation request!
Folks this is unheard of and defies logic until you read the article. Our local city has been trying to grab more and more of the surrounding neighborhoods for years. They usually win out through closed door deals with large landowners who are given some benefit and a guarantee of no city taxes for some extended period of time.
Well here an entire neighborhood asked for annexation and the city denies it. Why?
Owners of Bay Berry Mews and Capital Heights, 203 rental homes located off S.C. 277, have asked to come into the city so they can use the cityÂ’s water system. But city officials recommended the city deny the annexation because upgrading the system would cost more than $400,000, plus another $375,000 a year to maintain it.
So the next time you see some article in the local paper from the city about how they only annex surrounding areas for the “benefit” of the residents, just remember this. Folks it is all about money and taxes.

Asshole Bllom-idiot whining because his money from the State is being cut.
Hey you shithead, if you quit sending illegal undercover agents all over the country to harass gun stores you might save some money. And cross the river and see Christy, he'll tell you how to get the unions off your back and the incompetent teachers out of the rubber rooms and in the unemployment lines.I also say he should be getting zero money from the State or the Feds.

Just a few minutes ago I went to a different batshit crazy article on that website. At the end of the article it had a link that said "Discuss this article in our forum". I clicked on the link (curious as to what powerful stupid was surely there) and I got a WARNING from Norton saying THIS PAGE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS AN ATTACK PAGE.

In a report on Media-ite, MSNBCÂ’s Chris Matthews goes off the deep end once again in an attack on the tea party, asking a republican strategist this;
So the Muslim Brotherhood has a parallel role here with the Tea Party, they’re the ones who keep you honest and decide whether you’ve stayed too long? Whether you’ve got a “Sell By” date looming?
And following it up with this comment;
ThereÂ’s some craziness out there on the right and the fact that these war-hooping nut bags, some of them, are deciding who the senators should be, should make the Democrats . . . feel pretty happy.
Chris failed to also mention that "Rock-theVote" does ever show up at either of their events. Very suspicious indeed.Posted by: Islamic Rage Boy at February 02, 2011 04:36 AM (tvs2p)

Iowa House Passes Constitutional Ban on Same Sex Marriage
I guess this is in response to the earlier court ruling that said their previous ban was unconstitutional? I wonder when Malor is going to pick this story up. Not sure what their senate will do with this.
This quote amuses me though:
“Here’s the funny things about rights — they’re not supposed to be voted on,” said state Rep. Bruce Hunter (D-Des Moines).
That's true, and just as soon someone finds me where it's written down that the state has to sanction any and every decision you feel like making, you let me know sport.

Vulnerable Democratic senators have raised far less money than their predecessors did two years ago, a sign that their party could struggle to keep its majority.
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) barely raised any
money in the final quarter of the year, pulling in just $12,000 and
reporting $444,000 on hand. Webb is considered vulnerable, and might
face a formidable candidate and fundraiser in former Sen. George Allen
(R-Va.).

So, Charlotte North Carolina gets the Democratic National Convention next year over St. Louis.
A quick Google search shows that since 1969, Charlotte has had more than 24 years of _Republican_ mayors.
St. Louis? Zero.
I wonder why the Dems would pick such a place, rather than a shining example of what Democrats can achieve when they don't have to compete against those evil teabaggers: St. Louis, maybe Detroit or Oakland.
I live in St. Louis, love it, and am never leaving, but the horrible effects of more than half a century of uncontested Democrat rule are obvious...and would be obvious to the voters.

Sweet Holy Moses. Grocery Store Awesomeness:
Amongst all this recession chic, Mr. Reid's Republican interrogator decided now was the time to go public.
In a voice that could be heard on the other side of this medium-sized food emporium, the shopper with ObamaCare Repeal on his mind -- no shrinking violet he -- loudly declared to his fellow gourmands (many in lines waiting to check-out) that indeed the graying personage standing right there amongst them was none other than "U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid," and, pointing directly at Mr. Reid, said, "This man is personally holding-up the ObamaCare Repeal bill by refusing to allow it to be brought to the floor of the U.S. Senate for a vote," and which law if left on the books "can eventually bankrupt the United States of America."
From the check-out area came applause, apparently at the spectacle.

It's made landfall now in the last few minutes- looks like because of of it's huge eye it has lost a bit of wind speed after hitting the Great Barrier Reef, however the danger now is the huge storm surge with massive water surges hitting the coastal areas - although because it hasn't hit along with high tides it might not be as bad as expected
I'm watching it now on Skynews Australia and the images are awful...we can only hope it's not as bad as forecast

The two biggest dangers form a hurricane/typhoon are the storm surge (by far the biggest) and wind born missile hazards.
The storm surge from a category 5 hurricane is just awesome and any house in its path gets knowcked down and washed away with everyone and everything in it washed away.
The missile hazards strike things in their path but don't do as much overall damage. The wind itself really doesn't do much except it can take the roof from poorly constructed buildings.
One other major hazard is tornadoes that are spawned from the edges of the hurricane. Here in the States that is usually on the NW quadrant.

I believe the reactionary scenario is more likely. But regardless of my own opinion, what is clear is that Egypt lacks the sort of political culture that can sustain a liberal democratic regime. The superficiality of the oppositionÂ’s demands is matched only by the absurdity of the regimeÂ’s discourse. Without knowledge of the likes of Locke and Burke, Hamilton and Jefferson, my country is doomed to either unbridled radicalism or continued repression.

Even with the dummies, criminals and other misfits whom they've gotten to join them, the Communist student dissidents who orchestrated that revolt in Egypt represent probably less than 3% of Egypt's popuation, and even if you add in late-comers; i.e., outlawed Islamic radicals, all of those rabble elements combined is still less than 20% of Egypt's population.
In fact, the people defending their homes and businesses against that rabble represent the vast majority of the people in Egypt; facts which Progressives in this administration and in the MSM don't want you to know, because if they can destabilize the Middle East, they can more easily advance their greenie, Progressive agenda ...., redistributing the wealth as bribes to empower themselves, figuring that increased attacks on Israel will be collateral damage, but that, what the hell, the ends will justify the means; world-wide Communism. Communism didn'[t go away when the Soviet Union collapsed. They just changed their name to "Progressives" and to "Greenies".
BTW, good morning, you batty, reactionary dimwits.

El Baradei is the face of the Muslim Brotherhood style of Middle East governance we will have to deal with, and I think that your President will be not unhappy with this outcome
They are pushing him because they intend to use him as a willing and weak puppet. And yes, Comrade Zero will cream his mom jeans. He is an America hating commie bastard, who was probably not even born here.

She had them on to explain what happened, and it was pretty revealing about what had happened.
She isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but she at least is pretty fair and center-right. E.D. Hill was very biased and I was glad to see her go.

I just hope and pray American voters will see through your President's superficial facade and see what he truly supports - I'm so sad to see the American power symbols so devalued - this has a huge impact in all other areas of the world such as ours
We need a strong USA here in our area of the Pacific

What is disconcerting about the misfits who have joined the Communist dissidents and the Islamic funnymentalist radicals is that they believe that, by killing all of the Israelis, they will then be able to enjoy the prosperity of Israelis themselves, which is the rationale of misfits in this country who elected Obama with a hope that, by a redistribution of wealth in this country, they will be able to enjoy the prosperity of the wealthy, also.
What is disconcerting about their belief is that they don't realize that, if they couldn't pull themselves up by their bootstraps and attain prosperity on their own, they sure as hell won't be able to retain wealth that they will steal from the prosperous, and that, in fact, that wealth will go to people who used them to attain power for themselves. A case in point: After the Russian revolution, its leaders lived like royalty, while the people (i.e., the poor, dumb suckers) who fought that revolution continued to live in squalor, disillusioned by what their struggles had wrought, and yet, all around the world, those suckers never learn, and they continue to be used by their unscrupulous leaders. It's sad, but a fact of life.

Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer,
Pretty sad from the country which was the breadbasket of the ancient world.

#340 - That reminds me: A few days ago, some people here remarked that Egypt produces and exports nothing worthwhile.
That shouldn't be our concern. Our concern should be what they import from us that provides jobs and income for us.
You're right: They import a huge amount of wheat from us, pumping money into our economy which might go to somebody else if Islamic extremists decide to buy wheat elsewhere. Mubarak has been a good partner to the USA and to Israel and to Great Britain and France in many ways which the MSM is not discussing, because it will defeat the purposes of the slimy MSM to do so.

so I'm reading and thinking that Gabe is trying to make this a thread with only news headlines and we keep thwarting him? And then we add news on other threads but that's because after the morning no one really looks at this thread.

My daughter attends UQ- St. Lucia- she is home for summer break right now. We visited your delightful country- Queensland and New South Wales last spring. I am glad that we visited prior to Orca Oprah, as I have a visceral reaction to do the opposite of anything she does or recommends

People hang around on the headline thread commenting on morning news. When I come here later in the day, there are usually 2-3 articles up, but often they are not on subjects that I have news about (Egypt being a prime example).
I really think this site needs to be reorganized. However, I am not in charge so am only offering a suggestion.

Islamists don't buy wheat. Either they steal it or they starve the population and wait for the idiots in the West to send them wheat, gratis - for the children - at which point the islamists steal the donated wheat and then sell it.

That's right. Mubarak carried on what Sadat started (which Egypt was very much against). But Western fools love Sadat and paint him nearly as a saint while they now demonize Mubarak, who is pretty much the same person as Sadat was and merely extended Sadat's sort of rule. The West, pushed by the self-hating Western left and their MFM, suffers from a fatal and stupid sort of amnesia.

I've tried in the past to put news items into this thread thinking that the cobloggers might check the thread and make a post or sidebar item, but it doesn't work. Alternatively, this could be a thread for commenting on sidebar items, but in that case we need an open thread.
Whatever the label, it is for all intents and purposes an open thread.
If HQ really wants tips, they need a centralized tips address for us all to send to and they need to post that address somewhere prominently.

Regarding Charlotte getting the DNC convention to worship Obama.
FYI - Charlotte is a big-freaking-Democrat town. Our previous mayor was a RINO that played along with Democrats better than Republicans.
Our Mecklenburg County GOP is a joke as well.
But the Democrats play the race and wealth cards perfectly here, and manage to get re-elected easily each election even though the budgets and school system are a complete mess. One astute blogger (MeckDeck - Jeff Taylor) calls us "Detroit on the Catawba [River]".
We do however have a beautiful U.S. White Water Center that can barely stay afloat - even with several towns subsidizing it, the new NASCAR Hall of Fame that brings in less than a third of the original estimate of people - but is a bling bling tribute to the France Family, Bobcat / Time Warner Arena which we paid for to get Bob Johnson & Michael Jordon to bring a team here that we have the priviledge of subsidizing... and put another 40mil into for the convention, a Light Rail Line that we still haven't figured out how to pay for, and tracks for a Trolley laid perfect down a street that won't ever be used or extended - a 30 million dollar set of speed bumps.
Anyway, it's a good thing the DNC is coming here. Our local businesses need the money. And the people here get the opportunity to picket the thing.
