Question for all knowledgable M&Ms: Does anyone have any suggestions for safe, preferably non-lethal ways of getting rid of squirrels that have moved into a house's walls? It only seems to show up in the morning, but we'd naturally prefer it wasn't there at all. We've had dead animals in our walls before and we would really rather NOT put up with the stench of dead, rotting squirrel for an indeterminate number of weeks, hence the request for something non-lethal.
It's also very difficult to access our attic, which adds more irritation to the situation.
Y'all are smart folks, and your help would be appreciated!

THIS is from the far-left Guardian so iot just goes to show that the Brits might actually be waking up:
A Populus poll found that 48% of the population would consider supporting a new anti-immigration party committed to challenging Islamist extremism, and would support policies to make it statutory for all public buildings to fly the flag of St George or the union flag.
Anti-racism campaigners said the findings suggested Britain's mainstream parties were losing touch with public opinion on issues of identity and race.
The poll suggests that the level of backing for a far-right party could equal or even outstrip that in countries such as France, the Netherlands and Austria. France's National Front party hopes to secure 20% in the first round of the presidential vote next year.Posted by: momma at February 27, 2011 05:35 AM (penCf)
Another Unfarking real UK news story:
After squatters moved into John Hamilton-Brown's new £1million five bedroom home he has been forced to beg them to get out through his letterbox.
The group of foreigners were granted legal aid to fight to stay - while he was forced to represent himself.
...
Squatting is legal as long as occupants do not use force to break in.
On the Advisory Service for Squatters, users swap tips for getting into properties and bypassing alarms.
One user said: 'i can help u to open/secure buildings. i have my own tools. price up on agreement, quality work.'
Another
person asked for assistance getting into a different London home. He
wrote: 'I'll be opening a new house in Highgate in the following days,
if you can move in immediately and possibly help out opening it as it's
kind of tricky, call me...'
The group occupying Mr Hamilton Brown's home qualified for legal aid because they are EU citizens and unemployed.

However, there are claims that the outbreak is giving North Koreans an opportunity to eat meat. RFA said as soon as a pig was spotted drooling or staggering in Gangwon Province, residents immediately culled it for sale in the market. That caused a drop in pork prices in the province, leading to an influx of buyers from as far afield as South Pyongan Province, it added.

Went to a Republican function last night.
First, let me say that if last night was a reflection of the party's organizational skills, we are doooomed. It was the worst-organized event I've ever attended and that's saying something since I've been involved in both academe and/or fundraising for most of my adult life.
Second, heard very short remarks from Hatch, Mike Lee (our new Tea Party senator), Chaffetz (the new Rep who is sleeping in his office), and our Lt. Gov. Hatch's reception was very tepid (actually, I felt it was bordering on very rude). Lee and Chaffetz were really well-received. Lee's talk was very barn-stormer, mostly about federal land grabs. I didn't care for Chaffetz' talk -- kind of Glen Beck-y. He is very popular, though, and likely to beat Orrin if he decides to run for the Senate.
The best talk of the night was by our Lt. Gov, Greg Bell, who is the former president of our state senate. Really passionate but still very intellectual. I kept thinking about Mitch Daniels during Bell's talk (which was about DOMA) and how you don't have to be a milque toast in order to be an intellectual.
Oh, and our asst Atty Gen (I think that's who he was, the AG is battling cancer) gave a nice summary of the anti-Obamacare lawsuit.

Fun fact. According to Wikipedia (I know - cesspool of all knowledge), honey badgers are virtually impervious to arrows and spears, and even machete strikes. The only surefire way to kill one is to brain it with a club or shoot it in the head with a high-powered rifle.
Why the hell aren't we training honey badgers for front line combat in Afghanistan? They're borderline superheroes!

I just posted this in the ONT thread for ya:
Can you elaborate please? I found, during the 08 elections, that the local GOP office was terrible at spreading the word, campaigning, etc. In fact, a few in our little neighborhood got together and I'm sure contacted more people than the local GOP did. We even put up signs in several places that hadn't even seen a GOP rep., yet had been talked to by several Dem. campaigners. OY!

So, how's it looking for a government shutdown at the end of the week? If the dems don't see reason about how boned we are fiscally, I hope it does come to that, although I'll be affected by it.
I'm a federal employee, considered "essential," which means if it happens I'll still come in to work, I just won't be paid.
Are the Republicans going to cave, or will fiscal sanity finally have a small victory?

A really good site about the effects of the sun on all this weather.
This guy actually predicted this winter accurately back in July of last year. It's a very technical site but at least you can use it to throw in the faces of all your AGW friends. Funny how you never hear about the effects of the sun on so-called climate change. Maybe because there's no way to make money off of it? You can't change the sun.

Yeah, I tried to volunteer for McCain-Palin in '08 (this was out in California in Dreier's district) and encountered complete incompetence when I visited the HQ. They had no signs, were fumbling in interacting with constituents who came in to volunteer, and never followed up with me to do any work. I attributed it to California, but last night makes me wonder.
Last night's event was a Lincoln Day dinner (semi-formal/formal dress) hosted by our county Republican party. It was large (dozens of 8-top tables). We were at a table sponsored by my husband's work, the biggest employer in the county. It was advertised as starting at 5 pm with a reception and a dinner starting at 6:30 pm. Well, we get there at 4:55 pm and they are still fooling around with set up. No sign of a reception, coat check, sign in desk, nothing. A bunch of worker bees, none of whom took it upon themselves to interact with us. When I inquired, they said that it started at 6:30 pm! No reception (b/c the governor wasn't going to be able to come) to speak of... dinner starting at 7 pm. No apology. This is Utah, so we couldn't exactly kill time at the hotel bar waiting for the event. Others arrived early (although most folks in the know seemed to know to wait until 6:30). My husband called his boss (a big shot in the area) and told him to skip it, which he did fortunately.
Band played too loudly during the 6:30-7 pm non-reception "reception" (basically the dead time while they were still setting up!) which was held without any place to mix. Again, no cocktails (Utah!) but not even waiters roaming with soft drinks and no place to stand. People were crammed between tables with very little room to move. Very hard to talk with the band playing. An epic fail for my husband, who is new to the area and was looking to network. He also decided then and there that they will not sponsor a table next year.
I could go on and on about the lousy quality of the "program," the lack of theme, the lack of clarity about the purpose of the event, etc. But mostly it was an epic fail because there was no real networking going on. Just the usual people schmoozing with each other.
I've concluded that local politics (which I also encountered when I was a young person and worked on county GOP campaigns in MD) are not too different from H.S. Lots of petty jealousies and poor focus.
But, as I said, I got to see our Lt. Gov. in action, which was heartening, and Orrin Hatch hugged me, which I'd expected since he's a big hugger and I am quite lovable (ha, ha). Poor Orrin needs to retire. He really seemed frail and it was sad to see him try to connect (unsuccessfully) with the Tea Party-minded people. I thought the audience was very rude to him, talking during his remarks. He may have gone to seed, but he was a good senator on judicial matters way back when and they should have been more polite.

Yes, he needs to retire. But I do not think he warrants the treatment he received last night. Utah was more than happy to vote for both him and Bennett for many years. Just because a new wave has come in, doesn't mean that they should treat him like crap in that sort of venue, with his wife sitting there. Take him to task at a Townhall or in any other work setting, but don't treat him with disrespect at a quasi-social gathering.

I also deleted two Facebook friends. One linked this Paul Krugman op-ed, and I pointed out the difference between public and private sector unions and how the former enjoys a monopoly and holds the public hostage when they strike. I also said they carry on like oligarchs, and Wall Street doesn't pay my taxes or function as a PEU, so their bonuses are none of my business. I linked an Open Secrets report on which party receives the most corporate and union donations after my friend said, "This isn't partisan or anything," and then linked Mother Jones' hard-hitting expose on the net worth of all politicians who supported the Bush tax cuts. When I rebutted each of his points without getting personal, he had a full meltdown. But the funny thing about these self-righteous assholes who feel entitled to my wallet is that it doesn't stop there. This guy and his brother both hit on me on separate occasions, drank my booze, live in the apartment I found and pay the rent I negotiated. They don't understand hustle or initiative. They just bitch and take. Once there, they don't do shit to improve their lives. All these "community organizers" often live in squalor and rely on their betters to take care of them. Anyone can be their better, and that's why you're better off without them. I like free spirits who have self respect, not selfish people looking for free shit.

We are apparently now in a national "state of emergency" here in the U.S. because of Libya. If true, the release of this late on a Friday evening has me suspicious.
Interestingly enough, state and federal laws regarding 'price gouging' require that a state of emergency be declared before the laws kick-in. Could this be President Ears setting the table for controlling the rise of gasoline prices in the immediate future?

Best bit in Babylon 5 was when Garibaldi was missing, and G'Kar was in his quarters, noticed the picture of Daffy on the wall, and asked if that was one of his household gods.

That was my experience in Milwaukee County--the lady at the desk had no clue, they were out of signs with no information on when they'd get more, and there was no follow-up. When I volunteered for Ron Johnson last fall, I signed up through his website and about a week later a volunteer called mey. The call lists they started with, given to them by the McCain campaign, hadn't been updated after 2008 (if they were used at all).
Definitely solidified my idea that I should be supporting the candidates, not the party (although I realize my candidates are all going to be GOP, because as we've seen, WI Democrats are lying Commie thug assholes).

Along the lines of the recordings, perhaps you could set up one of those sonic repellants via an extension cord. If the squirrels go out during the daytime, you could blast them with that for a couple of days, then try blocking the access point with wire mesh some morning... presumably trapping them outside in the day time.
Perhaps put some tasty seed outside in your yard as well to help ensure they were out of the space when you sealed it.
The advantage of going with a pest control company is that they will do unlimited visits if you have trouble finding the access points at first. On the other hand, you may have to go with a 12-mos contract.

The local (big city) rags around here have a daily story about some unfortunate government agency who is having its budget cut because of the economy.
The Charleston rag actually had an article today screaming because it was the fault of the "tax cuts" during 2010 and that we needed to raise taxes.
These lying weasels don't even make any pretense at not being biased anymore.
Note that there were no "tax cuts". They eliminated the school tax portion of the property tax and implemented a 2 cent sales tax increase for the schools. (This was really part of the "new way of financing schools" program). My country elected to add it back in the form a a non-targeted fee. They simply added a "fee" that was about the same as what the separate school tax was. So we got the 2 cent tax increase and the property tax.

had high hopes for the daily caller cause the bow tie guy was at once time believed to be a conservative. Well not when he panicked on national television and said he changed his mind that al gore would win, but for the most part. Anyway, it seems they have been creeping more and more toward tabloid format and towards the left. Now, I'm told their staff is "wet behind he ears, young" so that may account for what's going on. It's possible he's going for a very young audience attempting to at least get some news to them. So maybe his target demographic is 16 to 30 (but that's pushing it). So that may account for the way the site is being run.
Heck the guy has a mortgage and a wife and kids to feed, he's reinvented himself so many times he gets credit just for that.
On rumsfeld, I'm told he's been asked a lot of bizarre questions. If the interviewer asks bizarre questions how can a serious discussion of his book ensue? He his put up a website with all his research I posted the link here on another thread last week.

Now that latter thing has a couple of things that you need to look at and not rely on worthless rhetoric. First is his record and second is his trustworthiness.
Someone who cheats on his wife and philanders is not trustworthy at all. If he cheats on his wife he will cheat on the public and voters.
Sure Newt talks a tough fight, but when he thought it was politically advantageous he saw no problem with getting on the couch with Pelosi and pushing the communist AGW scam.
Newt is dead for the Republican Party.

So the public employee unions get their money from the taxpayers through mandatory worker dues. PBS and NPR get a big piece of taxpayer money too.
All part of a very clever system to get the honest taxpayer to pay for building a system to extract even more money from the taxpayer.
It will only stop when we MAKE it stop.

I have a friend who is going through a crisis in her marriage. Her husband basically said he doesn't want to be married anymore. He said to here if he ever had the urge to cheat he would tell her and leave cause he had too much respect for her as a person to do otherwise. They are both "up and coming" in their professions, he a doctor and she an attorney. They have so much stress when you walk into their apartment, what hits you right away is stress. They're going to go to see a marriage counselor and I think they will work it out. They just have too much other stuff in their marriage that shouldn't be there and they seem to put each other last. Our collective response was "thank God they haven't got kids".
so for guys like newt, there is a classy way to do this, you don't simply go out and cheat.
