— Gabriel Malor In Japan, the women give chocolate to the men on Valentine's Day, including to their male coworkers (known as "obligation chocolate"). Apparently, this is because of a typo on the original 1936 ad campaign introducing the holiday to the country. In the 1980s, the candy industry introduced White Day on March 14, where the men give white chocolate or other white things to the women who gifted them. The value of the men's White Day gift is supposed to be two to three times as expensive as the women's Valentine's Day gift. Yes, the Japanese really do this.

Supposedly it is 2/3 spending cuts and 1/3 tax increases. But it includes spending increases. It will be interesting to see what it actually is.

The Japanese take gifts very seriously. Americans living in Japan are told not to give unsolicited gifts because the Japanese who receives it is then obligated to give a gift of greater value in return.
So it's not just the chocolates.

LOL, I wish. If 428 is the average weekly then for a month at 7.01 cents/KW it would be about $120. Throw in "fuel fees", State, Federal, and local taxes and fees and it will run about $150.00 which indicates that I must be leaving something out because last Feb it was $189

It is nothing but a racket for the greeting card and candy companies. And now that the Democrats from LA have run all the candy companies out of the U.S. it is unpatriotic to gift candy.

This is why I think Obama (pbuh) is constitutionally incapable of restraint. He simply can't help himself! His default behavior is that of a petulant child who does what he wants, or at least tries to. And that is a very good thing for America's prospects in 2012.

His base will not mobilize or vote the way they did in 2008. The confluence of events that allowed Obama (pbuh) to slip into office will not be duplicated. There simply isn't as much anger at the Republicans that can be channeled into the voting booth. There is no Bush, there is no financial meltdown.
The question is whether the inherent advantage that a sitting president has can be negated by his opponent.

I wouldn't count on that too much. We were counting on that difference in anger for 2010 to drive their turnout low. That never materialized due to the union GOTV efforts.
Until we can neutralize the union presence the best it looks like we can do on that score is break even.

Rather than deal with uprisings against himself, and in the interest of directing the region's revolutionary spirit at a single cause, so much for Gaddafi's healthy "fear" of the US now that his boy is imPotus.
So in the spirit of Japanese reciprocation, Israel would return the thought threefold, at least.

From what I have heard from people that get that you want to do it in the Spring or Fall when you can open up the house and let it air out for a few weeks after they put it in. Some people wind up with excruciating headaches from breathing the fumes on that stuff as it cures.

So what was that story about Obama wanting to get into Pell grants now? Something like 40billion in subsidies or something?
I guess this is one of the spending increases that he's going to float out there and dare the Repubs to oppose so the Dems can demagogue it to death - "The eeevil Rethugs want to take away your Gaia given money for college! Vote for the Everything for Everybody party!"

Absent the highly emotional and effective GOTV hot-buttons of 2008, there will be a less impressive Democrat turnout. That's not breaking even, that's an advantage. The question is whether the Republican party can field a candidate who can combat the structural advantages that Obama has.

It may not be a violation to invite them, although I think it would fall under the statutes as aiding and abetting a felony. But is is against the law for anyone on the terror list to come into the U.S. In addion, if I am not mistaken, congress passed a law back during the Bush years that forbade GITMO folks from coming in period.

Jerrie Perkins, 30, is charged with unarmed robbery, resisting and obstructing a police officer and second-degree retail fraud.
Her bond was set at $15,000 by 52-3 District Magistrate Nick Camargo during arraignment Thursday.
Investigators said Perkins was attempting to leave the Rochester Road Meijer with more than $600 worth of stolen electronic merchandise when her cart got stuck and she was unable to drive out the door.
The door alarm was activated when Perkins passed through it around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, and Meijer employees approached her asking for a receipt for the items.
Perkins — approximately 5 foot 2 and 400 pounds — shoved a loss prevention officer and hit her in the face, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
A sheriff’s deputy arrived and asked Perkins to put her hands behind her back, but she “cursed at the deputy, balled her right hand into a fist and took a fighting stance,” according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy pulled his Taser and told Perkins to put her hands behind her back, but Perkins brought her fist up over her head and looked directly at the deputy.
The deputy Tasered Perkins, who then complied with the deputyÂ’s commands and was taken to jail.
Above is from The Macomb Daily via Drudge. I bet she bought that scooter with Medicaid funds.

I've watched a ton of Japanese television programs, and the giving of chocolate is always a huge deal when the show features a V-day episode. It's actually quite cute. If a girl really likes a boy, she'll MAKE him a chocolate Valentine, which honestly is a helluva lot more trouble than I'd ever go through. I recall one story one of my favorite Japanese talents told about his high school days, when one of the girls who was crushing on him made him a special Valentine's Day chocolate and left it in a little gift bag on his home's door knob. The only problem was she had accidentally used SALT instead of sugar. But he was such a sweetheart, he ate the whole thing anyway. Awwwwwwwww.
Also, morning, M&Ms! I hope you all have someone to spend V-day with, unlike single, solitary moi.
Posted by: MWR at February 14, 2011 06:13 AM (4df7R)
Good guy.
My husband did something similar. We visited his grandmother when we were engaged. She was older than the hills and pretty out of it, so when she made us coffee (using an ancient percolator, natch) she got confused and put salt in the cups instead of sugar. My husband switched cups with me when her back was turned and drank mine, in addition to his.
Valentine's Day has never been an important holiday to me... probably because I didn't date at all in high school and much in college. But I did manage to pull it together and get the hubby a card. We have to go to a benefit thingy tonight so my hopes of a nice quiet dinner are dashed.
