Top Headline Comments 2-Valentine's Day-11
— Gabriel Malor

In Japan, the women give chocolate to the men on Valentine's Day, including to their male coworkers (known as "obligation chocolate"). Apparently, this is because of a typo on the original 1936 ad campaign introducing the holiday to the country. In the 1980s, the candy industry introduced White Day on March 14, where the men give white chocolate or other white things to the women who gifted them. The value of the men's White Day gift is supposed to be two to three times as expensive as the women's Valentine's Day gift. Yes, the Japanese really do this.

2 Not much out there this morning. All the who-hah is on the President's supposed budget for "cutting the deficit" No details yet but it is supposed to be released in 1 hour.

Supposedly it is 2/3 spending cuts and 1/3 tax increases. But it includes spending increases. It will be interesting to see what it actually is.

5 Rise and shine, M&Ms. Spring is coming, although it may not seem that way right now. Plus nobody actually expects you to be productive on a Monday, so you've got that going for you.

6 Spring is on the way??? maybe in two or more months. I used 428 KW last week. That was even more than the week before. Doesn't appear to be slacking off yet.

They are predicting some warm weather but I will believe it when I see it.

Posted by: Vic at February 14, 2011 03:21 AM (M9Ie6)

7 We're actually seeing ground here in the mid-Atlantic, as opposed to an unending sea of snow. That constitutes a harbinger of spring in my book, mostly because I have cabin fever.

The Japanese take gifts very seriously. Americans living in Japan are told not to give unsolicited gifts because the Japanese who receives it is then obligated to give a gift of greater value in return.

So it's not just the chocolates.

LOL, I wish. If 428 is the average weekly then for a month at 7.01 cents/KW it would be about $120. Throw in "fuel fees", State, Federal, and local taxes and fees and it will run about $150.00 which indicates that I must be leaving something out because last Feb it was $189

17 What is funny is that Valentines Day was originally a religious Holiday that had nothing to do with all this gifting crap.

It is nothing but a racket for the greeting card and candy companies. And now that the Democrats from LA have run all the candy companies out of the U.S. it is unpatriotic to gift candy.

This is why I think Obama (pbuh) is constitutionally incapable of restraint. He simply can't help himself! His default behavior is that of a petulant child who does what he wants, or at least tries to. And that is a very good thing for America's prospects in 2012.

His base will not mobilize or vote the way they did in 2008. The confluence of events that allowed Obama (pbuh) to slip into office will not be duplicated. There simply isn't as much anger at the Republicans that can be channeled into the voting booth. There is no Bush, there is no financial meltdown.

The question is whether the inherent advantage that a sitting president has can be negated by his opponent.

I wouldn't count on that too much. We were counting on that difference in anger for 2010 to drive their turnout low. That never materialized due to the union GOTV efforts.

Until we can neutralize the union presence the best it looks like we can do on that score is break even.

37 Gaddafi is gifting the Palestinians Israel.

Rather than deal with uprisings against himself, and in the interest of directing the region's revolutionary spirit at a single cause, so much for Gaddafi's healthy "fear" of the US now that his boy is imPotus.

So in the spirit of Japanese reciprocation, Israel would return the thought threefold, at least.

From what I have heard from people that get that you want to do it in the Spring or Fall when you can open up the house and let it air out for a few weeks after they put it in. Some people wind up with excruciating headaches from breathing the fumes on that stuff as it cures.

Absent the highly emotional and effective GOTV hot-buttons of 2008, there will be a less impressive Democrat turnout. That's not breaking even, that's an advantage. The question is whether the Republican party can field a candidate who can combat the structural advantages that Obama has.

74 A Pontiac womanÂ’s alleged theft attempt was foiled this week when her motorized cart became stuck at a Rochester Hills Meijer.

Jerrie Perkins, 30, is charged with unarmed robbery, resisting and obstructing a police officer and second-degree retail fraud.

Her bond was set at $15,000 by 52-3 District Magistrate Nick Camargo during arraignment Thursday.

Investigators said Perkins was attempting to leave the Rochester Road Meijer with more than $600 worth of stolen electronic merchandise when her cart got stuck and she was unable to drive out the door.

The door alarm was activated when Perkins passed through it around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday, and Meijer employees approached her asking for a receipt for the items.

Perkins — approximately 5 foot 2 and 400 pounds — shoved a loss prevention officer and hit her in the face, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

A sheriff’s deputy arrived and asked Perkins to put her hands behind her back, but she “cursed at the deputy, balled her right hand into a fist and took a fighting stance,” according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy pulled his Taser and told Perkins to put her hands behind her back, but Perkins brought her fist up over her head and looked directly at the deputy.

The deputy Tasered Perkins, who then complied with the deputyÂ’s commands and was taken to jail.

92 27 As if listening to that squish Michael Medved wasn't irritating enough, today he's marring my WSJ with an op-ed "Obama isn't Trying to 'Weaken America'" with a picture of Palin and Rush.  Assuming he doesn't walk this back in about a week, like he does most of his ball-slurping comments about the jugeared cocksucker, maybe he should take a job with Weird Al's new network along with Bathtub Boy and just end the charade.

I think that was meant as an insult.

Yes, I gathered that, although it's not altogether clear.

The goatee is a reference to the famous Star Trek episode "Mirror, Mirror" in which the evil Spock can be distinguished from the good Spock by a goatee.

Duh!

I got the reference, but missed the point.  Clearly, I'm under-caffeinated this morning.

101

I've watched a ton of Japanese television programs, and the giving of chocolate is always a huge deal when the show features a V-day episode.  It's actually quite cute.  If a girl really likes a boy, she'll MAKE him a chocolate Valentine, which honestly is a helluva lot more trouble than I'd ever go through.  I recall one story one of my favorite Japanese talents told about his high school days, when one of the girls who was crushing on him made him a special Valentine's Day chocolate and left it in a little gift bag on his home's door knob.  The only problem was she had accidentally used SALT instead of sugar.  But he was such a sweetheart, he ate the whole thing anyway.  Awwwwwwwww.

Also, morning, M&Ms!  I hope you all have someone to spend V-day with, unlike single, solitary moi

102 The only problem was she had accidentally used SALT instead of sugar.  But he was such a sweetheart, he ate the whole thing anyway.  Awwwwwwwww

Good guy.

My husband did something similar.  We visited his grandmother when we were engaged.  She was older than the hills and pretty out of it, so when she made us coffee (using an ancient percolator, natch) she got confused and put salt in the cups instead of sugar.  My husband switched cups with me when her back was turned and drank mine, in addition to his.

Valentine's Day has never been an important holiday to me... probably because I didn't date at all in high school and much in college.  But I did manage to pull it together and get the hubby a card.  We have to go to a benefit thingy tonight so my hopes of a nice quiet dinner are dashed.

104 What I mean is that I think Romney is a squish. GWB was also a squish in many ways. Behold the compassionate conservative, which is shitspeak for big government moderate. Though I don't think ill of either Romney or GWB, I don't want another squish to continue the slower dash to socialism.

Posted by: maddogg at February 14, 2011 06:26 AM (OlN4e)

105 I was surprised Palin didn't poll better in the Utah poll I posted.  (She was well under 10%.)  Hubby and I have met quite a few Palin supporters here, but maybe they're just more vocal than the Romney and Huntsman supporters.

108 The Pell Grants thing smells like a trap. An anonymous source says that Obama has put it on the chopping block. The budget request will show no such thing. The [raycissssst] House GOP is expected to try to cut Pell Grants and thereby fan the flames of the kind of class warfare Obama needs to get turnout in 2012.

Word.  I watched F&F this morning while Doucey (?) was question the OMB director and he never asked either question I would have:  How much is the cut for this year, and how much will the National Debt be at the end of this 10 year process of vicious cutting?

Posted by: Mr. Sar Kastik at February 14, 2011 11:00 AM (qC8/Q)

No, but I would say I was somewhat to the right of him, if your talking about President Reagan.

Posted by: maddogg at February 14, 2011 07:02 AM (OlN4e)

116 Yes I was referring to President Reagan. Fair enough but I'll never be able to reconcile the criticism of Bush as a Rino squish and the praise of Reagan as our greatest conservative President based on what Bush is criticized for.

Posted by: Mr. Sar Kastik at February 14, 2011 07:10 AM (qC8/Q)

117

GWB was all too eager to sign bills that grow the size and power of the federal government. An example is the prescription drug bill, which he would say was compassinate conservatism, and which I would call welfare state expansion. He would also have been happy to sign more restrictive gun control laws.

Posted by: maddogg at February 14, 2011 07:24 AM (OlN4e)

118 See that's the type of criticism a lefty would use. Even though he never did and in fact had the awb sunset during his administration and was a significant force in passing TX concealed carry law while Governor, you think it's a valid criticism. Something you think he would have done. No doubt there are valid criticisms but they should be for things he actually did.

131 Obama is out to destroy our country.  The last shining hope of the world has elected a fraud to lead the nation.

I know about buyers' remorse, but that's not good enough.

Anyone who voted for Obama can only redeem themselves by joining forces in having him removed from office.

IMHO

132 I came in here to admit I was wrong about the Pell Grant trap based on the WaPo's "scale-down" wording. I went to find a cite, and this is what was there: "Obama proposes to trim aspects of the Pell program to save money, but overall he would raise Pell funding more than $5 billion. "House Republicans would lower the maximum Pell grant to $4,705 and cut other education spending by $4.9 billion, according to their spending proposal for the rest of the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30. The GOP proposal is likely to face opposition from Senate Democrats."
