LOL, LMS Azaleas are a Southern plant so I don't know how well they will do at all in PA. As for planting them Now is probably about the right time (maybe a little late depending on location and soil temps) just before they start blooming.

I would check with your local nursery for varieties that do well that far North though.

Some of the commenters from MA stated on the ONT that they kenw people that were growing them in MA and ME though.

My local gardener claims that you want azealas grown locally by a reputable nursery to ensure some level of acclimateization.  The large stores buy in bulk and ship form goodness knows where so those plants are a crap shoot.

55 Our neighborhood is crawling with azaleas. The leaves have been kind of maroon all winter, but are greening up now. So there must be some winter-hardy variety up here.

I'm limited to the stores I can reach by bus, so a full-service nursery is a major trip to the burbs.

I see shoots of daffodils, tulips and some lilies breaking the surface in our tiny yard. (They were called tiger lilies where I grew up, but our neighbor here calls them day lilies.) I'm hoping two $10 azalea pots will outlast my four springs here.

Azealas are an evergreen plant but the leaves will turn if in extreme cold.

Before I bought any though I would still check with a local nursery for types that are cold hardy. It can get very expensive buying shrubs only to see them die in the Winter.

Also, do not plant them while blooming. Either get them before blooming (which they shouldn't be in PA yet) or wait until after blooming.

The donks and their salad-tossing allies in the MFM have done a very good job of polarizing people on this and framing it in a "why should I sacrifice when nobody else is" way.  Truth be known I can't blame people for feeling this way if what they've been exposed to leads them to believe that.  That's why Reagan was successful in promoting a growth atmosphere by saying "government is the problem and you can succeed if we get it off your back".  Unfortunately even he had to deal with a donk congress and didn't stop the growth in government spending.  That's a major problem and, even though the successes of Scott Walker and Kasich fill me with some degree of optimism that people are ready to change how things are done, the fucking CRs that I mentioned previously that fund BammyCare are signs that we've got nobody in Congress up to the task of doing it.  And that's with something that the public remains firmly against....

The one thing you need to find out is how acidic your soil is.  The people in the nursery center should be able to tell you.  If your soil is NOT acidic (mine is not as it is clay) you will need to add some soil amendment such as peat moss and probably fertilize with something like Miracid,  which is designed for azaleas and rhododendrons.

71 Mulching with pine straw should keep your acid levels up. Also, if you have clay soil you should make sure it drains well before planting (clay usually doesn't).

Prior to planting dig a hole about a foot deep and fill with water. If it doesn't drain completely within an hour you need to dig a much bigger hole and mixing in sand with the dirt so it will drain.

Azaleas need well drained soil.

The story I read said they detected small amounts in an air sampler they had on the helo. It was almost certainly very tiny amounts that were barely detectable. An air sampler works by sucking a high volume of air through a particulate filter for a set period of time and then counting the filter in a sensitive counter.

It has to be that because (1) they are doing small controlled releases to relieve pressure and the amount at the release point is small and (2) by the time it is more than 50 miles away it should be dissipated to the point of no concern at all.

U.S. regulations are stringent as hell but the Emergency Planning Zones are broken up into 5 mile, 10 mile and 50 mile radius. There is a reason they do not go out over 50 miles.

Yeah, I've never been a big fan of them either.  They are easy to grow and some folks love the variations in the foliage, I guess.  Sort of like coleus.

Yeah, azaleas grow great in Philly area. I am in Chester Co and grow a bunch of them. Now is a good time to plant; maybe the best. Don't worry too much about where you buy them--whether retailed at big box stores or smaller garden specialty shops, most are grown in massive quantities in Oregon and shipped to this area in for resale  in early spring (ie, right about now).  There are azaleas that are too tender for Philly, but it would be tough to find them in stores here.

The key with store bought azaleas, and any store bought plant for outdoors, is they are grown and sold in pots, and tend to be heavily fertilized. they are almoist always root bound coming out of the pot. Rip the sh*t out of the root ball with a garden claw before putting in ground. Water when you plant but don't overdo it. this time of year rain gives all the rain they need.

113 59 Our neighborhood is crawling with azaleas. The leaves have been kind of maroon all winter, but are greening up now. So there must be some winter-hardy variety up here.
The varieties w leaves that go reddish in winter are usually pink or red bloomers. The leaves on white bloomers stay green through winter. A lot of those maroon leaf types are Girard hybrids. they do great in Philly.
I see shoots of daffodils, tulips and some lilies breaking the surface in our tiny yard. (They were called tiger lilies where I grew up, but our neighbor here calls them day lilies.) I'm hoping two $10 azalea pots will outlast my four springs here.   The lily shoots coming up now are day lilies, the wild kind with orange flowers. Again, very common in Philly area. Tiger lilies are an asiatic species and come up later.

Anyhoo, there's another, quite serious, angle to the NPR story that I haven't seen addressed anywhere.  Charities must certify that they have not engaged in transactions with suspected terrorist organizations or with organizations that may promote violence (or even "hatred").  

NPR may not have accepted a gift from this group, but they certainly were woefully sloppy about their due diligence.  And one really wonders if there are any other contributions that they have accepted from suspect organizations, given their willingness to play footsie with this group.  I certainly hope there's a thorough audit in the offing.  

If anyone's interested, here's a link to a decent summary of the regulations pertaining to international giving.  It's from 2007, but it's my understanding these regulations (or similar) are still in place.
