Certainly there's a lot of damage control to be done, PR wise.  But the new pebble bed reactor design, based on what I've read so far, is much safer and very easy to shut down.  We should transition to that design (unless they now have even better ones) regardless of how this issue in Japan turns out.  An effective ad/information campaign could be very effective - people are desperate for alternatives to oil.

Society is founded on three pillars: Law, Tradition and Taboo.  We've killed Tradition and Taboo, so now the Law is the only thing left, and it's going to keep getting bigger.

The problem is that the left spent years attacking the common culture and it's associated ideas of civility and respect.  You shouldn't need a law, because if someone is affected by fragrances then it should be common courtesy to refrain from using them in his presence.  It's the same with smoking.  If want to smoke, then I'll ask the people around me if they mind.  If they say that they do, then I don't smoke.  I don't get pissy about it if they say it bothers them, because I was raised that you should always be respectful of others.

Oh, THAT is the most ridiculous thing I have EVER read (in the last few days, because liberals are good at ridiculous).  Japan was already in an economic hellhole before this disaster, and it's in a deeper one now.  They need food, water, clothes, everything; even body bags have run out.  There are hundreds of thousands of people displaced and homeless, with infrastructure in ruins and electricity rationed.  If ever there was a disaster that needed every possible dollar of charity money it could get, it's Japan in 2011.

The other thing is that newer reactors (my understanding is that the ones in Japan are actually fairly old) have many more safety features which would (probably) help prevent a similar catastrophe even if they were hit by a tsunami.

Momma - again, you don't know Japan (not that I do - no non native ever can) - but you're overlaying western sensibilities on  a very non western people. Trust me when I say that no mother is saying anything near that...

A typical arrangement would have a 50 hp pump recircing SFP water through a cooler at around 100 gpm. The other side of the cooler would be cooled by their service water system, which in turn is cooled by large coolers using sea water as an ultimate heat sink sink.

The problem is that ALL of those pumps need power to operate and there is none. In addition they have lost instrumentation for a lot of stuff.

Also, reports yesterday said they had lost some of the fire trucks so they may not have enough capacity there to feed both the spent fuel pool and the core. Also, those SFP are on the top floor of those buildings so if they are feeding them through the top with a 2.5" fire hose they are going to lose a lot of the flow due to headloss and elevation differences.

The other problem with unit 4 is that it had been completely defueled to that SFP so that pit was full of fresh hot stuff. In this case, the core is outside of the containment.

If they can not maintain it covered it is bad shit.

There is a new design out for "modular reactors" that are about 200 MW each. But the have not taken hold. They are proposing that you will be able to additional "modules" as needed and reduce costs.

That particular model though depended on a lot of variables that have never happened in the regulatory environment of the past.

As for "containing them in an accident" the size doesn't make a lot of difference for the amount of material released unless you have a complete core failure and also lose containment.

I don't expect to see these jump out there and take the market. The costs are being mostly driven by the legal battles and the size makes no difference there either.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) reported an explosion in the suppression pool at Fukushima Daiichi Unit 2, at 7:14 p.m. EDT on March 14. Reactor water level was reported to be at 2.7 meters below the top of the fuel. The pressure in the suppression pool decreased from 3 atmospheres to 1 atmosphere. Radiation readings at the site increased to 96 millirem per hour.

Dose rates at Fukushima Daiichi as reported at 10:22 p.m. EDT on March 14 were:

    * Near Unit 3 reactor building 40 rem/hr
    * Near Unit 4 reactor building 10 rem/hr
    * At site boundary 821 millirem/hr.
    * Kitaibaraki (200 km south of site) 0.4 millirem/hr.

We are working on getting updated information on radiation and dose rates at and near the plant.

Station personnel not directly supporting reactor recovery efforts have been evacuated, leaving approximately 50 staff members at the site. Operators are no longer in the main control room due to high radiation levels.

Safety relief valves were able to be re-opened and seawater injection into the reactor core was restarted around 1 a.m. EDT on March 15 and is continuing.

At Unit 4 on March 14 at approximately 8:38 p.m. EDT, a fire was reported in the reactor building. It is believed to have been from a lube oil leak in a system that drives recirculation water pumps. Fire fighting efforts extinguished the fire. The roof of the reactor building was damaged.

Fukushima Daini
All four reactors at Fukushima Daini are being maintained with normal cooling using residual heat removal systems.

Pipe dream. We experimented with liquid sodium cooling years ago. There are too many huge problems to overcome. We had a couple of experimental small ones years ago but they have both been long shutdown and decommissioned.

As for naval nuclear propulsion as far as I know everything about them is still classified.

 I can't walk into a perfume shop, tire store, etc because of the smells, but I would never tell other people to stop using air fresheners. But, in my house, if my step son wants to wear cologne he has to either put in on outside and then get into his dad's truck, or if I'm taking him somewhere, he has to put in on when we get there.

I had read that they lost 2 of their 3 fire trucks but that has been repeated or confirmed. I imagine that there is a shortage of fire trucks all over Japan right now. I know NYC had a shortage of fire trucks after 9-11 because the city of Columbia, SC fire department took up a collection from the local red necks here and bought them one. (They cost about $500K)

We don't keep those on the shelf either (likewise big industrial grade pumps).

Good question, however, in the years after that there was quite a number of above ground nuke tests, including of course Hydrogen Bombs.

So I doubt there is any way to get a handle on that kind of data.

I am going to give them some time.  I think that the 'established' Republicans are publically saying one thing, then allowing Rubio, etc. to take the 'opposition' role in order to gain momentum for the Presidential elections.

Right now we have no one, but if Rubio 'stand ups to the old white GOP leaders' he will most likely gain the support of not just Conservatives, but Independents as well.

From what I've read, right now there are 400 millisieverts being released at one of the reactors in Japan.

Here is some info that I found on Bloomberg re: radiation:

One hundred millisieverts a year is the lowest level at which any increase in cancer is clearly evident. Above this, the probability of cancer occurrence increases with higher doses.

A cumulative dose of 1,000 millisieverts would increase the incidence of fatal cancer by about 5 percent. A single dose of 1,000 millisieverts causes temporary radiation sickness and decreased white blood cell count, but not death. A single dose of 5,000 millisieverts would kill about half those receiving it within a month.

It seems to me that indeed, there is a lot of hysteria going on, especially in the US.
