I can't claim to know the true answer, but let's not forget that it was the Stalinist USSR.  I believe that SOMEBODY was going up.  At gun point, if need be.  The human cost didn't really factor into the calculation under that regime.

The administration announced the forming of a youth conservation corps -- on the surface it brings up images of boy scouts and brownies picking up litter and planting flowers, but somehow I don't think that's the reality of it.

my guess is that not going up meant certain death, but on the capsule you had a moderate chance of surviving.

I keep saying something similar:  Obama gambled that he could run for the Democratic nomination, come in third, and be kingmaker between Hillary and Edwards.  This would have made him a player in Democratic circles, allowed him to write his own ticket in a Democrat administration, and spend the rest of his life on the lecture circuit.  Instead, the Edwards campaign imploded and Obama found himself neck and neck with Hillary, and had to win or else he was done.

While I'm glad that people ARE starting to ask questions, you have to wonder why they haven't before.

I have worked at 2 non-union car part factories, and while some asshole tried to unionize the plants, I fought against it.  I kept warning people that the factories will close (we were making great money $15/hour 15 years ago) and that the powers that be would be sticklers for the rules if the union passed.  Well, they voted for the union (day before vote, my tires were slashed; a week before vote at 2nd plant, my windshield was smashed), I quit, and all I heard for months afterward was that they no longer to take long breaks, had to stay in area no matter what, etc.

Both plants closed within 9 months of voting for a union.  All my ex-coworkers blamed the company and couldn't believe that it was their fault.  They had a really great job, great pay, lax rules, etc., and they still 'wanted more'.

The very pathetic thing was that at the 2nd plant the union started calling me (well, their robots at work did) a company plant because I faught against union at first plant.

Some of them were probably unaware of their rights wrt the use of dues for political activities since the union has been very hesitant to let workers know those rights exist.  The whole mess in Wisconsin has made many people aware of their rights on that front.
