Glenn Reynolds calls it a "clown show" which seems strangely appropriate, seeing as clown are murderous sociopaths in the making.

Official: Suspect in Deadly U.S. Airmen Shooting Wanted Revenge for Afghanistan
The suspect in the murder of two U.S. airmen at the Frankfurt airport confessed that he specifically wanted to kill Americans as revenge for the Afghan war, a German investigator said Friday.

Griesbaum also said that UkaÂ’s pistol malfunctioned during the attack, preventing further loss of life. After shooting and injuring two more airmen he pointed the pistol at the head of a third and pulled the trigger twice, but the weapon jammed.
The U.S. Air Force released the names of the victims on Thursday: Senior Airman Nicholas J. Alden , 25, of Williamston, S.C., and Airman First Class Zachary R. Cuddeback, 21, of Stanardsville, Va.

Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was forced to use beanbags against armed Mexican killers before he was shot dead in Arizona in December
Border Patrol agents shot beanbags at a group of suspected bandits before the men returned fire during a confrontation in a remote canyon, killing agent Brian Terry with a single gunshot, records show.

True. This is why taxes on private property are the most immoral of all taxes. I've heard that in Mississippi (or was is Louisiana?) a retired person (over 65) who owns his land free-and-clear does not pay property tax, but I tried to confirm it using Bing and didn't find anything yet.
What's even more galling, though, is that the government officials will steal your land without just cause for their own personal use. If you want to be enraged, check out this story where a sitting judged handed over a person's private land to another retired judge. Democrats, of course. Fucking corrupt pigs. May they die in a fire.

This is madness! Time for these guys to turn those bean bags (and worse) on the idiots reponsible for these absurd "rules." How the criminals must have laughed - they must have thought it absurd that some cops were trying to hinder them using such ineffective means. Yet again, the Liberals are killing the good, while sparing the bad. Just as they always do. Each day I learn to hate them more.

Not only the eminent domain angle but if you don't pay your taxes they'll seize your house and land. So do you really own it or are you just renting it from your betters in the gubmint?

"He's(Obama) doubled down on a lot of things, going back to education ... the idea that we're testing kids and we're tying teachers salaries to how kids are performing on tests, that kind of mechanized thinking has nothing to do with higher order. We're training them, not teaching them."

Exactly. It's serfdom. Either pay the government its bribe, or get thrown off your land into the street. This is why often the local government is far more tyrannical than the federal government. They're close to you, and can get in your business much more easily. Plus they are always grubbing for more money, since they can't print their own.
In the case I cited above, they didn't even use imminent domain. The sitting judge simply decided that the retired judge had squatter's rights - even though the retired judge had done nothing at all to improve or maintain that land. The lot in question was worth the better part of a million bucks, and costing the legitimate owner $16,000 a year in property taxes, plus a monthly association fee. Someone should be hanging from a tree over this.

Most Southern States have what is called a "homestead exemption" that varies in the amount.
Here in SC it exempts the first 50K of your primary residence from property tax. So if you have a 1500 sq ft house and it is assessed at full value, you will pay property taxes on $100K (assuming average home prices of 100/sq ft).
Here is the data for Mississippi
They get a $75K write-off.
One thing I find "ironic" that you don't see very often in the "media" is that there were just as many depression era farmers and homeowners evicted at Sheriff's sales for property taxes as there were for mortgage payment defaults.

Old Greenspan has that much right. But my worry is that the only thing it will help get passed is a reduction in spending. That's not enough, and is actually the less important thing. The key is to get rid of the regulations and other impediments to doing business. That is far more crucial. Greater production of goods and services by business will help offset the inflationary impact of the government spending. But allowing business to wither and die out will make any spending cuts futile.
If we could cut the government's excess regs, control the border, and actually develop domestic energy production, it would do a lot to get us out of this mess. Alas - even our side is too stupid - they are afraid of the Greens and the illegal immigrant lobbies. Now, of all times, is the best time to fight the environmentalist nut jobs and illegals both - the American people want work, and prosperity. They are willing to look more critically at the false claims of the libtards, and are less tolerant of the job stealers, if only because their own pocket books are at stake.

Nope. This particular investigation is about an ATF cover-up; Sen. Grassley is even involved in looking into it. A blurb:
“Project Gunrunner” was an ATF operation supposedly designed to reduce the number of U.S. guns illegally smuggled into Mexico. The allegations now are that the ATF deliberately allowed thousands of guns into Mexico either to track the flow of guns or, as some believe, to artifically inflate the number of number of guns smuggled from the U.S. to Mexico to provide a reason to increase the ATF’s budget.
A link.

On the contrary - no 3rd World nation could put up with this stupidity. Only a nation as rich, coddled, and detacted from harsh reality as our own could be this stupid. If we were 3rd World, our border patrol could have shot those bastards, looted the bodies, and left them to rot in the sand and no one would care. But because of our properity we're over run with damn do-gooders, who fret about every piece of criminal scum and the sanctity of their "rights." Navy admirals, others censured over lewd videos
Several past top officers of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, including two rear admirals, have been recommended for censure following an investigation into lewd videos shown on the ship, the Navy announced on Thursday.
The videos made and shown on the vessel emerged in January and drew criticism for simulated masturbation, toilet humor, and slurs against homosexuals.
Four more rear admirals were counseled or received non-punitive letters of caution and more than 30 officers and enlisted sailors got such letters in relation to the incident, the Navy said.

Amen! Truer words were never spoken. Regarding both of those types of miserable people, Theodore Dalrymple just put out a really excellent piece. This is actually quite topical, as it deals first with the situation in Libya, and states my own thoughts on the matter so much more eloquently than I ever could. Commenting on a recent bleating screed from some Western leftist calling for yet more regulation of our lives, he stated "It is a thread to freedom, not that of mad dictators in fancy dress, but of termites."

I was watching a DVD of Entourage recently and it had Matt Damon playing himself as this humorless do-gooding cocksucker who was shaking actors down (along with LeBron James in a characterization that was only slightly less misguided than doing an ESPN special with Jim Gray to announce he was going to Miami) "for the children" in a completely obnoxious manner. He even dropped shit when the guys pointed out he was living extremely large with a personal jet like "I've bought carbon offsets (ZOMG eleventy) so I can fly responsibly" that was just reeking of essence of yeast infection. Unfortunately the guys didn't tell him to go fuck himself (LeBron too) and to keep making garbage movies that lose money and look like a dork with a Celtics stocking cap on at Laker games. What a fucking piss-off.

Hi, and thanks for the welcome - I've been lurking for a long while here, really enjoying the discussions and the fun
I'm in Sydney Australia but my kiddies are moving to the US because believe it or not it's still a land of opportunity over there - and our country under its ratbag coalition of Greens/Labor is stuffed until we throw the bastards out at the next election!
My daughter and her hubby will be moving in June - his company gets finance from the US and the business climate is better over there (yes we're stuffed down here) -the company deals with oil technology
My son announced last night that he's been offered a job in Houston - he has a little business here specialising in natural gas - he wants to move there for 12 months as the money he's been offered is 10 times what he makes here!
What an upside down world - reading the comments here from funemployed and the unemployed, yet my kiddies see opportunity +++++

A friend of mine served on Enterprise as a nuke tech as of a few years ago. Sounded to me like the infection of political promotion, with considerable favoritism to minorities and women regardless of skill, was already pretty rampant. That kind of culture is self reinforcing. Once that type of people have power, they select their own kind to follow behind them. It takes a vigorous top-down purge to rid the system of their taint. Alas, it can't happen in this political environment. But if I were in charge, I assure you that there would be a great abundance of purging going on.

Sixty ships were commonly underway in America's seaward
approaches in 1998, but today there are only 20. We are abdicating our role on
the oceans.

Their company already has an office in Houston - that would be logical to move there, but as I wrote to Vic earlier, they may be thinking California is easier for all of us to get to when we visit - for me if both my kids were in Houston that would be easy!
Yes I'll remember Pecan Grove

Most Southern States have what is called a "homestead exemption" that varies in the amount.

My son's company fits natural gas pipelines to homes, and as that SE corner of Queensland is the fastest growing bit of OZ he has years of work ahead
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit - Pokolbin is a favourite place - friends own a vineyard and winery there Tullochs - right next door to Cypress Lakes Resort

192K new jobs is right in line.
The unemployment rate fell to 8.9%.
Private sector payrolls rose 222K."
CNBC just said this is a very important number politically but unfortunately it doesn't mention the people who are permanently unemployed. Productivity is up which means that we've gotten lean and efficient using fewer employees.

It's total bullshit. The economy is floundering so the government is now making up numbers so it will look better. By next year, for Barry's glorious re-election, it will down to 5% even though the real number won't have budge or gotten worse

8.9% is a small number which is so small because it excludes the 12-15% of people who have run out of benefits, have given up looking for work, or are working a few hours a week instead of working no hours per week.
But it looks good. Kind of like how Obama is lacking in all sorts of important skill sets, but he looks good.
I'm beginning to fear for '12.

If they try 5 it will be a joke, thats Bush Era numbers, I would say low to mid 6's
How long has the numbers manipulation been going on? Didnt somebody use Carter era calculations and the number was huge?

I never like to see military cuts, but our resources are not unlimited. So long as we have enough to protect what's ours, I'm content. And I am prompted to ask - what IS our role on the oceans? To defend international trade? Sounds like paying to make outsourcing safer. Maybe some of our so-called allies can start pulling their weight. The Chinese are plowing ahead with a "navy" so perhaps they can chase the south sea pirates around in the waters they are so eager to claim. Maybe the Europeans, who brag about how much smarter and richer they are, can start diverting some resources to the work.
Unless I'm misinformed, our navy so far out-classes all others that it would have to be majorly slashed to put us at risk. Overkill is waste.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, hit 10.3% in February -- up from 9.8% at the end of January. The U.S. unemployment rate is now essentially the same as the 10.4% at the end of February 2010.
Underemployment, a measure that combines part-time workers wanting full-time work with those who are unemployed, surged in February to 19.9%. This resulted from the combination of a sharp 0.5-point increase since the end of January in the percentage unemployed and a 0.5-point increase in the percentage working part time but wanting full-time work. Underemployment is now higher than it was at this point a year ago (19.7%).
Time for Gallup to be sent to the re-education camps

But there is an implicit assumption that the warriors would be allowed to use force and win in your statement. By the way, overkill is not very nuanced!

Thanks for that info - no doubt wherever they end up I'll be visiting that office in Houston - it's still so strange that both my kids might end up living in the same city in the US! BTW we love the US - we've been visiting there for years - although I've never been to Texas - just California, Hawaii and on the east coast, New York and Washington DC

Do you guys think that's true? If you do then why? Batchelor maintained that most people aren't fighting k daffy, just a very small faction on the Mediterranean cost. Bathchelor said that people want to take care of their families and aren't picking up guns to get themselves killed "for what?"
I've noticed everyone seems to be trying to leave the country. To me that doesn't show standing firm to support your local dictator. To me that says, forget the fighting, someplace else has to be better than this, let's get the hell out of here while we can.

This is why I hate a lot of these refugees. Stay in your own damn mess and fight it out, pussies. Either make things better in your own land, or shut up, or at least wait to come here until we f***ing invite you. It's not my/our fault that they were born in a crap hole of a nation. If I ran any of the nations bordering Libya I'd have troops out there with shoot-to-kill orders in place.

Not steel! Fire can't melt steel!
Uless it's steel wool, in which case you can set fire to it with a simple match.
Try it some time.
