Happy Thursday.

Crimean lawmakers plan to hold a referendum on joining Russia.

Rep. Ryan gave BuzzFeed's McKay Coppins a sneak-peek at his CPAC speech.

Also, at CPAC, Gov. Christie will try to recover his front-runner status. According to a new poll, he's got some work to do.

More from WaPo's latest poll, with some really nifty crosstabs (click "detailed view" on the ones that interest you).

WSJ's Patrick O'Connor has a piece on CPAC speeches as a spring-board to 2016.

I can't seem to find it if ACU is planning to livestream CPAC this year like it did last, but CSPAN will have Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin's speeches around 12:40pm. (Nothing says "future of the conservatism" like Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin.)

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, March 06, 2014.   On this day in 1836 the Alamo fell to Santa Anna's Mexican troops.  On this day and year in 2014 Obama is unilaterally surrendering to Moscow.

Now to my rant:

It is selfish in the extreme to come to work and cough and sneeze all over your co-workers, especially when you like to brag about all your saved up PTO and you could've worked from home.  It was especially not nice to come in and cough all over the guy recovering from meningitis and almost died a few weeks ago.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

I donÂ’t generally tell Hollywood stories that take place after 1960, but hereÂ’s a short one concerning 1986s Stand by Me

If youÂ’ve seen it, you know that Richard Dreyfuss plays the role of the narrator, a writer named Gordie Lachance, whose memories are stirred by reading a newspaper report of the death of his childhood friend.  While the bulk of the movie takes place in 1959, Lachance is remembering in the 1980s, which means he types his memories on a word processor instead of a typewriter.

At the end of the movie, he types a few last words, then reaches over to shut the machine off.  But in one New York theater, as it seemed Dreyfuss was about to shut down without saving his file, the audience began shouting, “Save it!  Save it!”

In a completely unrelated story, remember the old Saturday Night Liveskit “¿Quien Es Mas Macho?”  I give you two pictures and ask, “¿Quien Es Mas Fappy?”

Jodie Foster:

66 Today's hymn is a beautiful one with a great Welsh tune. I had not heard it before, but it was shared in an Ash Wednesday service I was involved with yesterday. "Bless now, O God, the journey" by Slyvia Dunstan. Slyvia Dunstan was born in 1955 in Canada. She credited her early love of music from the music lessons given to her by a nun at the local convent school. Se realized, however, that her love for music by better suited to writing lyrics to hymns rather than performing or writing music. She was ordained by the United Church of Canada and served as a prison chaplain among other positions and was noted not only for her gifts in writing but in her concern for the poor and needy. She died in at about age 39 four months after being diagnosed with liver cancer. I was unable to find a version that had the lyrics, but this is a small church group singing it. I include the lyrics because it would be hard to know exactly what they are from the rendition. In addition it is such an appropriate song for Lent as we recall Jesus' time in the wilderness, our own times in the wilderness and God's promise to be with us in them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmHcWlbIjYo Bless now, O God, the journey that all your people make, the path through noise and silence, the way of give and take. The trail is found in desert and winds the mountain round, that leads beside still waters, the road where faith is found. Bless sojourners and pilgrims who share this winding way. Your hope burns through the terrors. Your love sustains the day.We yearn for holy freedom, while often we are bound. Together we are seeking the road where faith is found. Divine, Eternal lover, you meet us on the road. We wait for lands of promise where milk and honey flow, but waiting not for places you meet us all around. Our covenant is written on roads as faith is found. ****************** Grace and peace be with you.

If she were serious about changing that image, she'd be running for Senate up in AK. I'm not sure she's even a viable candidate up there anymore, so she will give her speeches, and make her cable news appearances, and do book tours, and make millions of dollars, and laugh all the way to the bank doing so.

If she wanted to, and was willing to put in the hard work, Palin could again be a viable force in politics. It wouldn't be as much fun (or lucrative) for her as her current situation, but it's doable.

Why should she? I'll freely admit that if I was in her position (or, come to think of it, Al Gore's) where I could make Teh Big Bux without expending much effort, I'd sure as hell do it. Sadly, how much better are we right now? We're getting parts for some of our military hardware from China, ferfuck'ssake. 107 If you think about it, Sarah Palin is exactly what we need right now. Read the NRO article on the Tea Party becoming less effective because they are straying into social issues. Instead of being the unifying force for smaller government, lower taxes and less regulation they were in 2010, you've got lots of people trying to usurp the name for anti-gay marriage, immigration, abortion and other shit. What it will take to bring things back is someone with undeniable credentials as a social conservative but who shuts down any talk on those subjects to promote the original Tea Party values. Social conservatives will go along quietly because they know that person is one of them, while the more libertarian can join in because the social aspects are being deemphasized for the economic goals. Palin positioned herself in exactly that light back in 2008. The MSM tried hard to get her to make some absolutist statements on social policy, but she stuck to saying she was focused on the economic side and that she wouldn't try to impose her personal views on social policy. Bottom line, you've got to have someone who social cons trust to lead the unification with the economic conservatives.

118 Quotes from Bother Lawrence, a Carmelite lay brother who lived in the 1600s in France and is the author of a wonderful meditativel devotional book, "The Practice of The Presence of God." He notes the importance of "keeping the soul's eye fixed on God in faith, calmly, humbly, lovingly, without allowing anxious cares and worries to enter in....Make it your study before beginning any task, to look to God, if only for a moment. Do this often while you are performing the task, and also after you have finished. Since this cannot become an habitual practice without time and great patience, do not be disheartened at your many failures. This habit can only be formed with difficulty, but once it is formed your joy will be great!....To those that set upon this practice let me suggest a few words, such as, "My God, I am wholly thine" or such words as Love prompts at the moment....This practice of the presence of God is somewhat hard in the beginning, yet pursued faithfully it imperceptibly works most marvelous effects within the soul. It draws down God's grace abundantly and leads the soul imperceptibly to the ever present vision of God loving and beloved." The best version of this work I have seen is the Bridge-Logos version, a "pure gold classic" edited by Harold Chadwick which contains numerous footnotes and Scriptural references.

The Russians have always bought, borrowed, and stolen ship designs from elsewhere. A large portion of the ships at Tsushima were French built and they even had a couple of American built/designed ships. Even during the cold war a lot of their ships were based on preWWII Italian designs and German war prizes.

Funny that we're talking about Reagan in a thread mentioning Rob "Meathead" Reiner because Norman Lear through All in the Family tried to marginalize Ronaldus Maximus by making him Archie Bunker's candidate.  I don't have a lot of hope for Palin's political future because that shitstain McRINO probably deep sixed it by having her join his clown car of a campaign.  But stranger things have happened.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at March 06, 2014 07:27 AM (QFxY5) I would re-evaluate the second she made a move that indicated otherwise. She is in the discussion because of wishcasting by a lot of folks on our side. I liked her very much, I wanted her to succeed. She mopped the floor with Biden in the debate, and her speech at the convention was great. But the reality is she wasn't ready for prime time. Their were major issues in her personal life lurking in the wings, as soon as she was given the nod, and they weren't prepared for that, she wasn't as polished as she needed to be to stand up to the a-holes in the media, and her resignation signaled to me, and I think a lot of other people that she wasn't willing to take the heat that might come along with the high executive office that she was in, or a higher office. I think she is quite happy letting us speculate on what her intentions might be every 4 years, and collecting advances from her latest book, or reality TV show.

181 in other news,

iTunes is giving me fits while Apple gives me the finger.
It started two updates previous when iTunes started blocking the DVD drive preventing any games DVDs from playing. Now iTunes won't run at all, and there is another update (#3) 150 megabytes (x3) at 50kb/s.with no guarantee that updating the software will fix the problem.

Meanwhile my music library (bought and paid for) is inaccessible.

Heres the thing, modern digital 'rights' management (DRM) and copyright law (life plus 75 years, renewable in perpetuity) is just like going to a book store and buying books, and after a lifetime of book purchases, the book store comes into your home and takes all your books away from you because 'upgrades'. When you buy a book you don't buy the book, instead you buy the 'right' to read the book or listen to the music, or watch the video. (and the thieving bastards.call me a pirate because I once purchased in the open market, digital video editing software (roxio) before that was declared illegal).

No, I am not a pirate. My desktop is fifteen years old and is being rendered obsolete. My LP records don't play anymore, my audio tapes don't play any more, my VHS tapes (bought and paid for, legally) don't play any more. In a few more years my DVDs (bought and paid for, legally) won't play any more.

The economy (every economy, whether capitalistic  or  socialistic)  always destroys businesses and jobs.  What you want to see is economic policies that encourage the creation of new businesses and new jobs, and that's what President Ignoramous doesn't understand.  Pursuing  the  policies  he  supports  destroys job creation, and creates unemployed or underemployed people.

To a degree     I actually agree with Hillary on this, though it burns me to have to say it.   My problem is that she just    throws it out there like "Putin = Hitler," when that's not the point.  Putin IS NOT    Hitler, and his goals are not Hitler's goals.   What is similar about the situation    is    that both Putin and Hitler used the same JUSTIFICATION      for   their incursions;   namely   the    annexation   and/or   "protection"   of    ethnic     Germans/Russians   in   other countries.   It's a thin excuse,    but   bullies and tyrants don't really care about how well their excuses hold   up to scrutiny.     That's    why   Poland and the Baltic States are anxious;   the latter in particular have high numbers of native Russian speakers.

But beyond these thin justifications    the similarities   stop.   Hitler was a genocidal lunatic   who wanted to takeover  Europe.   Putin is a nationalistic bully   who wants Russia to be #1  on the world stage.     There are very clear differences between the two, and Hillary would be smart to keep that in mind before going full Godwin.

Wait, Hillary?  Smart?  What the hell am I thinking?   That'd take a miracle!

215 'Behind the scenes' regarding the Debo vote. http://tinyurl.com/kn8dflo ItÂ’s my understanding that initially, Vice President Biden was happy to be there for the potential tie-breaking vote, hoping it would give him a nice little PR bump. Late yesterday though, his staff began voicing concerns that if he were to be the one to secure the nomination of a man who willingly tried to free a known cop killer, it could have serious political repercussions on a potential 2016 presidential run. This paranoia festered well into last night, and got so bad, at least one of BidenÂ’s top staff was convinced the whole thing was a ploy hatched by the Clintons to trap Biden into being the deciding vote that took place today.

Don't have a turntable. I could buy a new one that has a built in USB port and convert to digital which repeats all of the previous post. Assuming I can find a device with a compatible USB port (we're on version 4.0 now, and the one in this desktop is ver 1.0 I think).

One would also need audio editing software (audacity), but that is the same problem as previous comment, having editing software reawakens the dreaded DRM/pirate problem all over again. Even making a digital copy of an audio LP is a violation of copyright law and the 'fair use' claim of preserving the work for personal use would have to be tested in court, but the owners of the copyright don't bother with that when they can just 'upgrade' software unrelated to the conversion process and render that conversion process impossible.

225 Fact: German/Russian interwoven leadership A.Merkel, avowed Socialist from East Germany (USSR), earned her Doctorate in quantum chemistry and speaks fluent Russian. At the Academy of Sciences, she became a member of the Socialist Union Party's "Free German Youth" (FDJ) district board and secretary for "Agitprop" (Agitation and Propaganda). Merkel's accomplishments as a communist awarded her trips to Moscow, sponsored by the Kremlin. Not until the Berlin Wall fell did Merkel join the "democratic awakening" movement (not to be left behind, 'outmoded'). Originally, candidate Merkel may have been for Deutschland what Obama was presented to be for the USA: "the unifier" -- playing off the West's public "guilt" for having done so well while others were so poor off (Eastern Bloc). Merkel's "idol" is Catherine the Great, the Prussian Princess who married the man who became Czar, but through his own horrible performance as leader, was removed by Russian lords who promoted the Prussian Catherine to be Empress of Russia, and initiate a degree of development, modernization from Russia's dark isolationism and static traditionalism. Anyway, early in his KGB career, Putin was stationed in East Germany, and speaks fluent German, and has former ties with the same clique from which Merkel emerged. Currently, German Banking is the only economic string holding the EU together. And at that, as always, Britain and France chafe. Historically, not simply from the last 200 years, but prior to the Renaissance, for all the conflict between England and France, culturally they've always held Germans in the lowest regard, despite or because of the German work ethic and meticulous nature, and Teutonic heritage as Warriors. It's interesting to note that the earliest Germanic immigrants to Britain brought the distinct democratically elected "king" folk heritage, conflicting and new vs Britain's bloody royal by God's Will heritage. As for language, evident leading into the Enlightenment, the German language was designated for peasants; German nobility spoke German to their horses; French to their lovers, and Italian in all things politic. (Recall during our nation's Revolution for Liberty, Mozart pleading permission from the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Joseph II in Vienna to write an opera in GERMAN, a novelty!) If ever Reagan's trust but VERIFY mattered, it is now. And we have no reliable journalism. I don't want a war with Germany or with Russia. I'd rather our mutual interests supersede our differences. Monopolies spawn wars and domination; free trade allows free thought. And as for historical awareness, Americans are at a loss for comprehension. We just don't care to think, let alone to remember, much less to research. If any culture represented senility, ironically it's the New World of Americans who are so consumed by the transient moment (mostly bullshit bought/sold), as a nation we haven't a clue connecting us with all else. HAMARTIA a characteristic of tragedy, is not merely an action performed in all good faith which subsequently has the direst consequences, nor is it simply an error of judgment, it is a flaw of character. When you abandon Individuality and Sovereignty, you're left the serf, worse off in having experienced Liberty only to forfeit for "ease". "He who is a slave against his will, will be able to become free. He who has become free by favor of his master, and has sold himself into slavery, will no longer be able to be free."

I've got a stupid meeting coming up, but ---

Was thinking definitionally after listening to Bill Bennett this AM. He was describing "Conservatism" as, in part, in favor of "Limited Government"

We always talk about "Small Gov't" however. And in a numbers sense we have that since the gov't apparently consists of just One person now.

So the limited qualifier is important, sure, except Bennett always struck me as a big govt guy. He doesn't care how large it gets, as long as there are limits to its power.

I think we need both aspects, but wanted to pose it to the Horde and then wander off to my stupid meeting.

These are real, common-sense policies — and they’re going to make Facebook safer for all users. Facebook’s plan includes several practical measures to drastically reduce the chances of illegal gun sales on its platform, such as letting users report suspicious gun posts, deleting posts that describe illegal sales and requiring owners of gun-sales related pages to acknowledge the laws that apply to them. This victory marks a huge step forward in the history of our movement — and it all took shape in less than a month, thanks to you! Moms Demand Action got its start on Facebook, when like-minded moms came together to make a difference in the aftermath of the Newtown tragedy. Facebook has taken a major step forward to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands, and we will work together to hold them accountable to these promises going forward. ---- This is the big victory that they cheering about - We will not permit people to post offers to sell regulated items that indicate a willingness to evade or help others evade the law. For example, private sellers of firearms in the U.S. will not be permitted to specify “no background check required,” nor can they offer to transact across state lines without a licensed firearms dealer.

It has thousands of vehicles at its disposal, moves thousands of commuters daily, and the best part, itÂ’s FREE! Not only is it free, but it gets people to and from work faster than the typical bus, metro, or train. It's unique because it is not a government sponsored commuter program, but one created out of ingenuity from local citizens to solve commuter problems. She mopped the floor with Biden in the debate, and her speech at the convention was great. But the reality is she wasn't ready for prime time. Their were major issues in her personal life lurking in the wings, as soon as she was given the nod, and they weren't prepared for that, she wasn't as polished as she needed to be to stand up to the a-holes in the media, and her resignation signaled to me, and I think a lot of other people that she wasn't willing to take the heat that might come along with the high executive office that she was in, or a higher office." If you think that about her, why do you like her? If you think supporting her is "wishcasting" and we need to stop it, why say you want her to succeed?

And we are talking about the Palin who, so far, has been right about everything, the Palin whose campaign endorsements have helped American conservativism more palpably in the last few years than just about any other conservative voice out there.

It wasn't surprising that the Left and the media strived so hard to ruin her in public life. The surprising thing is the enthusiasm with which many on the Right embraced that effort and perpetuate it to this day.

322 The Rinos hate Sarah Palin because her forthrightness is something they CANNOT do themselves, without highlighting how hypocritical they are. If they said the same things she said, then did the opposite when voting time comes, that hypocrisy would shine like a neon billboard. So better to laugh, snark, and criticize what she says as crazy than to acknowledge that she actually has knowledge of what she is saying. The clip of John Kerry screaming about how she said she could see Russia from her house at the DNC convention....I have yet to hear any pundit who is running that clip note that Palin NEVER said that, that it was Tina Fey on SNL. The lack of knowledge and honesty from even "friendly" media astounds me.
