5 Gov. Mitch Daniels will be in Washington on May 4 to accept an award from the Arab American Institute Foundation at its annual Kahlil Gibran Spirit of Humanity Awards Gala.

By then, Hoosiers, along with the rest of the nation, might know whether Daniels is a candidate for the GOP nomination in 2012 or yet another Republican who has looked hard at it but passed it by.

Daniels has said he will make a decision after the legislature adjourns Friday.

If Daniels is running, the fact that he's accepting the award says he's a different kind of candidate. Some politicians might avoid attending because of the group's ethnic background, coming up with some plausible sounding scheduling snafu instead.

In 2006, Daniels, who is of Syrian descent, welcomed more than 150 Muslims to the governor's official residence as they marked the end of Ramadan.

Maya Berry, executive director of the Arab American Institute, told the Talking Points Memo, an online political newsletter, that Daniels was one of the group's earliest supporters.

"We have a community that comes with some unfortunate political baggage in terms of bigots," she said. "It's just nice when folks are proud of their ethnic background and don't allow that kind of politics of exclusion to get in the way."

Sovereign wealth funds are the new asymmetrical warfare weapons of choice.

All China has to do to fuck us is signal that they're dumping a ton of American jack-- which they're preparing to do.

They don't actually have to dump it all, and therefore devalue their investment in the future of America to screw us.  They only have to show the world they're serious about dumping us.  They will follow, so they don't lose their shirts in any major Chinese short-sale of America.

32 Washington State has been flirting with this for a long time now. First they floated an idea to track vehicle mileage with a GPS device in all cars but they figured out car manufacturers were not happy with that and they would be easily defeated.

They claim they are losing tax money for roads. Well, that is fine. My view would be that if gasoline taxes were no longer viable then replace them. But like all socialists, they never get rid of a tax. They want both taxes.

38 There was no "conservative movement" in the early 60s. Barry Goldwater really started the movement in 1964.

He voted against the 1964 civil rights act because in his opinion it was unconstitutional. He was right.

Of course, the courts and the government no longer follow it anyway.

40 Posted by: Vic at April 25, 2011 08:00 AM (M9Ie6) There were conservatives in the 60's, obviously. National Review debuted in the 60's (I think). I read that Buckley regretted his stance in the 60's. From what I have read on the issue so far, conservatives were against it because they didn't want Big Government forcing southern businesses to allow blacks, and they also weren't happy with Brown v. Board of Education. You know, I get it. I really do, especially with all the bullshit in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, it just looks so damn horrible, does it not? Is this why conservatives are labelled racist so often?

42 Removal of forced government segregation was a good thing and probably most real conservatives were OK with that. Forcing private companies to do stuff however was not and that is the unconstitutional part.

The VRA also had some real questionable parts, section V in particular is blatantly unconstitutional. No law can be applied to only some parts of the country.

44 Another data point in the Taliban 'catch & release' program:

The Taliban has staged a jail-break from a high security prison in Afghanistan, freeing 541 prisoners through a network of tunnels that took five months to dig.

In scenes reminiscent of war film The Great Escape, insurgents constructed a 1,050-foot (320m) route into Sarposa Prison, in Kandahar.

Around 100 Taliban commanders were freed. Wonderful.

Well, what I have found is that you either believe in small government, or you don't. Conservatives believe in small government.

What I find to be hugely ironic is the actual wording of the act "government shall not discriminate on the basis of color, sex, religion, or national origin" and yet the government does it every day now.

If you have a fever and Tylenol doesn't make it come down at least a degree, then you need to get to a doctor.  If you get chills that last more than 1/2 hour then you need to get to a doctor.

Those are the two best indicators I know for when you should see a doctor.

Hope you feel better soon.

96 Question:  I have a feeling that Obama and crew are going to start taking pics at anti-Obama rallies and to try and figure out if the protesters are on SS, SSi, or unemployment.  That way if he goes after a couple saying, 'see, you're fit to work' that way he can 'stop' some of these protests that are soon to come this summer.

Is it possible that he could do this?

Morning, all!  I don't know if anyone's been paying attention to the Greg Mortenson/Three Cups of Tea fiasco, but I've been enjoying the opportunity to revel in the schadenfreude.  If you've got a moment click the link -- it goes to RealClearPolitics -- and read the story.  The sheer hubris of the book's introduction should have been enough to make people go, "Huh?"

"The first tip-off that Greg Mortenson's memoir "Three Cups of Tea" has some credibility issues comes in the book's introduction. Co-author David Oliver Relin writes that as Mortenson is flying over Pakistan, the helicopter pilot marvels to Mortenson, "I've been flying in northern Pakistan for 40 years. How is it you know the terrain better than me?"

The pilot also confides, "Flying with President Musharraf, I've become acquainted with many world leaders, many outstanding gentlemen and ladies. But I think Greg Mortenson is the most remarkable person I've ever met."

People don't talk like that. Books don't lead with that level of self-aggrandizement. Unless they want to induct you into a cult."

For a while now I've been saying that working in a fast food restaurant should include hazard pay.

Dad who split up fight in McDonald's shot dead (South London, UK)

A DAD-of-four who split up a fight in a McDonaldÂ’s was shot dead moments after being told he wouldnÂ’t see the morning.

Raymond Mitchell, 34, had only popped into the restaurant to buy a hot chocolate.

But he apparently caused offence after splitting up two men fighting in the queue.

One of them, who had several gold teeth, shouted at Raymond: “You are gonna die tonight, you are not gonna see the morning.”

The thug then proceeded to call another thug and told him to bring a gun, and the rest is tragic history.  The poor man was pistol-whipped and then shot to death in an alley behind the restaurant.  Nobody, apparently, came to his aid or tried to intervene.

I'd like to remind everyone of the point made by Tony Katz over at the PJ Tatler about this story:

...The United Kingdom has a ban on handguns.  Police do not carry them in their routine business.  The ban, as re-clarified in the 1997 Firearms Act (2) only allowed for antique guns, or historic guns whose ammunition is no longer available.  Yet, as we plainly see, criminals still have access to guns.

As we always say, when it becomes criminal to have a gun, only criminals will have guns.  Not that liberals care, of course.

HuffWatch has released a new report about death threats being posted in HuffPo comments by a serial lefty whackjob:

Our newest special report documents the fact that for the third time in two months, HuffPost has allowed one of its most long-term, threat-spewing, radical leftist Moderators to return to the site, after banning him. These bans occurred almost immediately after our reports on HuffPost's and his actions were published, in December 2010 and February 2011.

So much for new tone.

Disturbingly, this loon appears to have developed a particularly virulent hatred for Paul Ryan, and has intimated several times that he lives near Ryan's district and plans on "infiltrating" a Ryan event.  In light of the Tucson massacre, I think this psycho needs a visit from the police.

Please check out Ben's post in sidebar for fallen Marine Staff Sgt Jason Rogers. May he RIP and may his family and friends be comforted from the "sea of love" they drove into in Brandon, Mississippi. His mother described the ride to the cemetary as "going into the heart of America."

Report has it that 400 Patriot Guard Riders escorted this great Marine home on the day of his funeral. It was also reported that a thousand people lined the roads to the cemetary. The church had 140 acres or so of private property where there could be no protest nearby. My brother was one of PGR on his first escort both from the airport and on the day of the funeral; and we are the proud children of a WWII Peleliu Marine. There was no way this community were going to let the Westboro vermin be heard or seen by the family of Staff Sgt Rogers, whose parents are also in the Patriot Guard. I am not sure if any of the rumors of Westboro are true, but with the numbers of people there protecting them, well, they had no chance to spread their hate (thank God).

Thanks, Ben. And thank you, Brandon, Mississippi. Below is a link to an interview with Staff Sgt. Rogers' mother.

There are certainly non-profits, particularly operating foundations, that appear to do little good and seem to primarily exist as shelters wealth.  That problem can be addressed without eliminating non-profits altogether.

134 WH Fails to Release Easter Proclamation

President Obama failed to release a statement or a proclamation recognizing the national observance of Easter Sunday, Christianity's most sacred holiday.

By comparison, the White House has released statements recognizing the observance of major Muslim holidays and released statements in 2010 on Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr, Hajj, and Eid-ul-Adha.

The White House also failed to release a statement marking Good Friday. However, they did release an eight-paragraph statement heralding Earth Day. Likewise, the president's weekend address mentioned neither Good Friday or Easter.

However, the First Family did attend an Easter Sunday worship service at a Baptist church and last week, the president hosted an Easter breakfast for Christian ministers. In that gathering, the president spoke openly about the Christian faith.

And today, the president and first lady will host 30,000 people for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. The secular celebration of Easter includes readings, games, and a yoga garden. This year's theme, "Get Up and Go!" is part of the first ladyÂ’s anti-obesity campaign and will also display produce from the White House garden.

142 Kirk: Senate should not have taken a break

The Senate should have stayed in session instead of breaking for the Easter recess, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said Sunday.

"Ideally, the Senate would have not taken a two-week break, and it would be debating right now the bipartisan commission on deficit reduction, especially following Standard & Poor's saying that we are headed towards losing our AAA credit rating," Kirk said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Kirk said he was worried the Senate was not getting enough done.

"While the House of Representatives has cast over 200 votes and sent major legislation directly on point to expand the gasoline supply of the United States, lowering prices and cut government spending, the Senate is largely moribund," he said.

150 Energy in America: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPAÂ’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Shell has spent five years and nearly $4 billion dollars on plans to explore for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The leases alone cost $2.2 billion. Shell Vice President Pete Slaiby says obtaining similar air permits for a drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico would take about 45 days. He’s especially frustrated over the appeal board’s suggestion that the Arctic drill would somehow be hazardous for the people who live in the area. “We think the issues were really not major,” Slaiby said, “and clearly not impactful for the communities we work in.”

The closest village to where Shell proposed to drill is Kaktovik, Alaska. It is one of the most remote places in the United States. According to the latest census, the population is 245 and nearly all of the residents are Alaska natives. The village, which is 1 square mile, sits right along the shores of the Beaufort Sea, 70 miles away from the proposed off-shore drill site.
