North Korea has suffered from a chronic shortage of food and energy due to years of isolation, mismanagement and natural disasters. The communist state has relied on international handouts since 1995 to help feed its more than 20 million people.

2. Obama does a really good job of making his supporters feel like it is their campaign. it's all bogus BS for the gullible, but note how they have check-off forms and such. It makes them feel important and special, which means they are going to go to the polls.

"It...": is in reference to what precisely?
"It begins...": So, finally, after 2 1/4years into a job, it's time to start doing something? I would have thought that "it" would have "began" in January 2009. Oh, I get it! The past 2 1/4 years was a period of rest after the last campaign in preparation for the next campaign. So, "Change" did not include any adjustment to Obama's record of viewing his present job as only a means to pursue his next job.
"...with us.": I assume that "us" refers to all the people who were stupid enough to sign up for Obama's SPAM lists. Or is this yet another reference to Obama's usual "us and them" philosophy?

When asked what he would do if anybody tried to block the mural's removal, he said, "I'd laugh at them, the idiots."

It's not as if anyone could suggest that rather than doing his job, Obama and Co. have been working on nothing but their campaign and March Madness brackets, right? Everything else can wait until January 2013.
But who am I to think? Surely the GOP knows better than I do and has another spectacular strategy of running against Bush and saying that we have nothing to worry about from another 4 years of Obama in store for us.

As added bonus, check out middle pharagraph. Um, I'm happy for voters to vote the way they did last year
The Hill Poll: GOP seen as more reasonable in spending-cut debate
A new poll conducted for The Hill showed 41 percent polled said the GOP had been “more reasonable,” while 29 percent said Democrats had been more sensible. Twenty-two percent said neither party was more reasonable than the other, and 7 percent were not sure.
But the survey also found that, despite the favorable view of RepublicansÂ’ tactics, respondents said it wouldnÂ’t change their votes from last year.
Forty-five percent of respondents said they voted for a Republican last November, and 47 percent said they would do so if the election were held now. Forty percent of respondents said they voted for a Democrat, and 42 percent said they would do so now, according to the March 31 survey of 1,000 likely voters.

GHOSH: The thing to keep in mind that`s very important here is that the Koran to Muslims, it is not — it is not the same as the Bible to Christians.
The Bible is a book written by men. It is acknowledged by Christians that it is written by men. It`s the story of Jesus.
TODD: Yes.
GHOSH: But the Koran, if you are a believer, if you`re a Muslim, the Koran is directly the word of God, not written by man. It is transcribed, is directly the word of God.
That makes it sacred in a way that it`s hard to understand if you`re not Muslim. So the act of burning a Koran is much more — potentially much, much more inflammatory than –
TODD: Directly attacking — directly attacking God.
GHOSH: — than if you were to burn a — burn a Bible.
TODD: Directly attacking God.

Yeah. We were bummed, but at least the bank disclosed it before we forked over $500 for the inspection.
We now are eying what is absolutely the ugliest home in one of the best neighborhoods around these parts. I mean, this is a butt-ugly home... odd roof-line, terrible choice of trim and siding colors, bizarre planting in the front. It kind of reminds me of the homes that went up in my parents' old neighborhood in the early 70s. But the yard is spectacular and the main living spaces are workable (I think). It would need a master bath and closet re-model.

North Korea Begs for food

Love this bit from the article:
Responding to calls for civilian aid to be allowed, Seoul Thursday approved the first civilian humanitarian assistance to the North since November. The United Nations called for more than 430,000 tons of food aid to support the most vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women in North Korea.
Right. That's exactly who the food is going to go to. Children and pregnant women. Not politically connected fat cats who are buddy-buddy with Kim Jong Il. Right. Of course. Silly of me to think otherwise.

We don't even have an odd roof-line and had problems this past winter.
It is a somewhat shallow pitch, sort of like a shallow pitched Dutch colonial roof. Plus it has two levels - the left side of the house is one floor, the right has two floors. I don't know what that style of house is called. So, yes, we'd have to really be careful on our inspection.
A previous home that we had in Indiana had flat roof sections, so we have some experience with maintaining that kind of house. In our case, the real problem stemmed from the chimney. It took over a year and several guys fiddling with it to diagnose and fix the problem.
If we came into money (ha, ha) the thing to do would be to bump up the one half to make it have two floors and change the roof in the process... I think the easiest way to go based on the rest of the home would be a Dutch colonial... but I suspect that would be beyond both our budget and our patience of dealing with contractors.
But a lot of the cosmetic issues could be addressed by better planting in the front yard and a better paint/trim scheme, which we can handle.

That sounds a little like our first two house purchases which were from Texas to Indiana and then Indiana to California. This one is "local" (we've been renting since August) so in theory it's better but I'm finding it tiring nonetheless.
Yeah, this on-line stuff is a mixed blessing. So much info out there. I've been doing all of the scouting on-line, then dragging the man to neighborhoods to get his thumbs up (or down), then going to see the houses inside... he's only had to go into two houses. He's been so busy at work that even getting him into those two was a struggle.
I am desperately trying to get us into a home where we could do a 15 year mortgage, but it would be nice to get into a home that could be a longer term solution... so that may mean more money up front.

Yeh, this house was poorly maintained, most of which is easy to take care of. What I forgot to do, though, was take a bunch of "before" pics, so that when we sell it, I can show how much better things look. One of my "favorite" problems: they slapped up paint to make it look nicer. The walls don't match the ceilings, there's dripped paint here and there, and the crown molding is partially painted over because they didn't tape it.
I still cannot figure out why the lawn was in such terrible shape, given the amount of rain that year.

And then he did a surprising thing: He pivoted to health care, an issue that has been described as the albatross around his neck in the coming Republican primary because many conservatives loathe the individual mandate in the Massachusetts reform plan he implemented as governor that served as a model for Obama's plan.
"And by the way, if we get the chance to talk about health care -- which will be fun, because of course he does me the great favor of saying that I was the inspiration for his plan -- I'll say if that's the case, why didn't you call me?" he said to the crowd, growing more animated. "Why didn't you ask what was wrong? Why didn't you ask if this was an experiment, what worked and what didn't and I would have told him, I know, what you're doing, Mr. President, is going to bankrupt us."

Trulia seemed not up to date when I was looking at it. One thing: I found one local realtor's web site that had more pics than Realtor.com had. That was nice. It also let me search by "no swimming pool". I guess people would submit more than 4 pics, but Realtor and most other sites wouldn't put up more for free.
I do have an "imagery date" in the bottom left corner of Google Earth--the app, not the web site. Not sure what options I had to pick to get that...

The point is that the Volt isn't ready for prime time, and a non-government management would never brought such a flawed vehicle to market, as it is doomed to fail.

It was probably lack of maintenance if the rest of the landscaping is bad. A lawn looks like crap if it's left to go to seed. It looks even worse if it's left to go to seed and then suddenly mowed short because of HOA write-ups or long maintenance cycles for REOs.
Or, it could be grubs, pets, compaction/drainage problems, shade, or a poorly executed sod job.
Well, the back yard thin-grass-with-bare spots could be explained by their 2 big dogs, but that wouldn't explain the front yard. We didn't do ANYTHING the first year here and it looked so much better. Now we're adding stuff to kill the weeds and such, so it's looking better and better.
The last owners did nothing, including cleaning. But they were miltiary and not here that long, so the previous owners' work survived. Mostly. Do NOT get me started about the woodwork inside here.

Thanks, Vic. That makes sense. I believe that the houses I'm thinking of have roughed in forced air in their unfinished basement spaces (and are already zoned so you can turn that on or off)... but I don't think any of them are including garages (although, come to think of it, I have seen a few garages that are heated). One house went from $85/SQFT to $170/SQFT just by factoring the unfinished v finished space into the calculation. Since that particular home is about 600 sqft too small for us in terms of its existing finished space, we'd absolutely need to get a price adjustment on that.

I'm seeing anywhere from around $70/sqft to over $100, but we are really looking at a wide range of homes.
The frustrating part is we'd prefer a smaller, newer home in a great neighborhood, but that's not the market here. I had to adjust my homes searches and take out the maximum bedrooms parameter (I had it set to 5) in order to see a lot of nice homes that happen to have 6 or 7 bedrooms.
I have gotten a sense from the realtor that things are shifting here a bit, so if we got a 6 or 7 bedroom home, it would not necessarily be a bad thing to turn it into a 5 bedroom home.

We'd like a smaller (by their standards) home on a biggish lot. Or at least a home with a private lot.

Consider Utah when hubby retires. We are really enjoying it. The people are very nice. It's also very pro-military. And our governor is doing a great job attracting employers who are fleeing California. Adobe is putting in a big facility here that will bring about 1,000 jobs. NSA is putting in a large data analysis (spying, I believe) center that will want people with language skills (which is a big thing in our workforce out here because of the LDS going on missions overseas; many of them are fluent in a second language).

To all potential home buyers:
Make SURE the realtor shows you your property corners. They are usually iron pins (pieces of rebar driven flush with the ground) but could also be stone or concrete monuments. Many states require a recent survey before a property sale.
Realtors have big arms, pointing "from here to there". If you don't know exactly where your property lines are you could end up in a world of hurt after your purchase.

If flowered (gone to seed) grass is suddenly mowed to a normal lawn height, the effect is even worse because the stress will kill clumps of grass.
Ah. Considering the way they didn't clean, it wouldn't suprise me if they didn't mow often enough.
I got a workout yesterday just using the manual rotary edger I got. I didn't want to deal with the heavy electric one that my husband uses. The rotary works great, but in several places the edge of the grass has crept inches beyond the walkway and driveway, so that took more work. Looks nice where I finished it, though.

If you go to existing homes inside the city limits it will drop down to about $85 sq ft. Nobody wants to live in the city here because it doubles your taxes.
As for surveys, although not required by law, the banks here will not loan money on a house without a survey and a title search.

Weird thing here is that neither a home inspection nor a termite inspection are required here. They just rely on an appraiser's report. We are good buyers because of our financial situation, but we are putting contingencies on condition in our offers.

House passes unconstitutional law (per Patterico):
"If the House has not received a message from the Senate before April 6, 2011, stating that it has passed a measure providing for the appropriations for the departments and agencies of the Government for the remainder of fiscal year 2011, the provisions of H.R. 1, as passed by the House on February 19, 2011, are hereby enacted into law.
Uh, no it wonÂ’t.
This was passed on April 1, and although it is a joke, the people who supported it apparently did so in all seriousness. Which is infuriating.
Anyone who voted for this is either an utter moron, or has chosen to place partisanship above the text of the Constitution. I suspect it is an attempt to avoid being blamed for a shutdown, but doing so by passing a transparently unconstitutional law is, to put it mildly, not the best way to achieve that goal."
He goes on to list the handful of congressmen who did not vote for this thing:
"
Here, then, are the only 14 Republicans in the House for whom I retain any respect Â… plus Ron Paul (sorry, I still donÂ’t respect him):
Amash
Burgess
Chaffetz
Fortenberry
Gohmert
Hanna
Jones
Dan Lungren
Tom McClintock
McCotter
Ron Paul
Ted Poe
Ribble
Rohrabacher
Sensenbrenner
Note that the list does not include “constitutionalist” Michele Bachmann. Other names I was very disappointed to see as “yes” votes include Mike Pence, Paul Ryan, and Darrell Issa (who is doing a fabulous job on Project Gunrunner). Tell me how I can continue to respect these people in light of this vote."
Chaffetz is my Congress-critter.

181 H.R. 1255 expressively states that if no message is received by the Senate, then HR 1 becomes law. Now, the two freshmen who sponsored this bill said that it is their intent that the bill be passed by the Senate and signed by the president, which is how it passes constitutional muster. So both of them admitted that it cannot be enforced without either of those.
In other words, the bill is a trigger mechanism meant to cause the Senate to act. They are also using it as a symbolic gesture meant to show the public that, in the event of a shutdown, they can point to this bill and say that the Dems voted against this Shutdown Prevention Act. But again, Rep. Woodall stated that it is his intention that this bill be passed by the Senate and signed by Obama.

It likely would have been better, but I disagree with Patterico and Ed at HA about the intent of these freshmen who sponsored this, especially since I saw the floor debate. Yes, the Dems have a point about constitutionality, but the bill is meant to follow the usual procedures and be passed that way. So passing the bill was essentially a waste of time due to the fact that Reid won't pass and Obama won't sign, but their intention was not to circumvent the Constitution. .
Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at April 04, 2011 06:36 AM (UO6+e)
I haven't seen anyone I like as well yet for the top of the ticket in 2012, but I'm concerned that it may not be possible for Ryan to both lead the budget fight in the House and lay what is, sadly, essential groundwork in early primary states. If that prevents him from considering a run, I could respect and concur in that decision. But I'm here to tell you, and you can bookmark this post: If Paul Ryan is the GOP Veep nominee, Obama will either dump Slow Joe Biden (probably through some contrived health or "more time with his family" excuse) or at least find another excuse for there to be no vice presidential debate. Because Paul Ryan would eat Joe Biden's lunch and then drink his milkshake.

from the Heritage Foundation:
On March 30, 2011, Senator Charles Schumer (D–NY) with 15 cosponsors, including the Senate Majority and Republican Leaders, as well as six other Democratic Senators, six other Republican Senators, and an Independent Senator, introduced in the Senate the Presidential Appointment Efficiency and Streamlining Act of 2011 (S. 679)… [snip]… The bill reduces the number of presidential appointments that require the consent of the Senate and establishes within the executive branch a Working Group on Streamlining Paperwork for Executive Nominations.

211 When my son was five we got him the Spiderman version. He caught a couple of minnows with it, and even one decent sized bluegill. Then, the next time out he dropped it in the lake.
But he did catch some fish, and we were not out a lot of money. We picked up his next one at a yard sale.
