Mmmm... bed...
So, I wonder what the Koran-burning-related death toll is today. When I walked in to work this morning there was a newspaper on the break room table, with the headline "Koran Protest Spreads East."
We need to start faking some videos showing various taliban leaders and tribal warlords buring Korans. Distribute those around on the inter-tubes and watch the fun...

"There's a Mike Huckabee mystery that won't go away. Send a public records request seeking documents from his 12-year stint as Arkansas governor, as Mother Jones did recently, and an eyebrow-raising reply will come back: The records are unavailable, and the computer hard drives that once contained them were erased and physically destroyed by the Huckabee administration as the governor prepared to leave office and launch a presidential bid."

When it comes to Russian aerospace products, conventional wisdom is: The equipment is good, the after-market is awful.
Ask the Indian air force (IAF) and its officials would emphatically agree. Sourcing of spares and consumables for its Russian-built aircraft and weapon systems has sunk to a new low for the IAF, with the government permitting it to issue multiple global tenders for spares across a range of systems. The move marks a striking break from the Indian defense ministryÂ’s traditional practice of contracting spares from original equipment manufacturers via Rosoboronexport.
Now the IAF is turning to vendors in Europe, Israel and the U.S. to respond to an urgent spares call for Russian-built equipment it has in inventory.

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration dropped financial sanctions on Monday against the top Libyan official who fled to Britain last week, saying it hoped the move would encourage other senior aides to abandon Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the country’s embattled leader.
But the decision to unfreeze bank accounts and permit business dealings with the official, Moussa Koussa, underscored the predicament his defection poses for American and British authorities, who said on Tuesday that Scottish police and prosecutors planned to interview Mr. Koussa about the 1988 Lockerbie bombing and other issues “in the next few days.”
Mr. KoussaÂ’s close knowledge of the ruling circle, which he is believed to be sharing inside a British safe house, could be invaluable in trying to strip Colonel Qaddafi of support.
But as the longtime Libyan intelligence chief and foreign minister, Mr. Koussa is widely believed to be implicated in acts of terrorism and murder over the last three decades, including the assassination of dissidents, the training of international terrorists and the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

If Congress failed to increase the debt limit, a broad range of government payments would have to be stopped, limited or delayed, including military salaries and retirement benefits, Social Security and Medicare payments, interest on the debt, unemployment benefits and tax refunds. This would cause severe hardship to American families and raise questions about our ability to defend our national security interests. In addition, defaulting on legal obligations of the United States would lead to sharply higher interest rates and borrowing costs, declining home values and reduced retirement savings for Americans.
Sounds like a different outcome than if they fail to pass a budget bill. Sauce for the goose.

Andrew McCarthy's NRO piece in the side bar "No More Dhimmitude" is a great rebuke to Petraeus and ME/muzzie policy in general. (pun intended)
If it weren't for stuff like this, Victor Davis Hanson's "Kingdom Of Lies" (PJ Media, moron link from the other day) and Mark Steyn's takes on recent developments, I might fear that I was losing my mind.
And while that horse left the barn awhile back, I'm thankful none the less.

Gee, the Fed spent 8 x more than they took in. Even Erskine Bowls (racist, now, I guess) is getting concerned:
“I'm really concerned,” Bowles told the committee last month. “I think we face the most predictable economic crisis in history. A lot of us sitting in this room didn't see this last crisis as it came upon us. But this one is really easy to see. The fiscal path we are on today is simply not sustainable.
“This debt and these deficits that we are incurring on an annual basis are like a cancer and they are truly going to destroy this country from within unless we have the common sense to do something about it,” said Bowles.
“I used to say that I got into this thing for my grandchildren,” Bowles said. “I have eight grandchildren under five years old. I'll have one more in a week. And my life is wonderful and it is wild. But this problem is going to happen long before my grandchildren grow up.
“This problem is going to happen, like the former chairman of the Fed said, or the Moody's said, this is a problem we're going to have to face up,” he said. “It may be two years, you know, maybe a little less, maybe a little more. But if our bankers over there in Asia begin to believe that we're not going to be solid on our debt, that we're not going to be able to meet our obligations, just stop and think for a minute what happens if they just stop buying our debt.
“What happens to interest rates?” asked Bowles. “And what happens to the U.S. economy? The markets will absolutely devastate us if we don't step up to this problem. The problem is real, the solutions are painful, and we have to act.”

/cut to the chase via curtailment of free speech. Graham says that the flag is what unites the American people. I contend that though our flag symbolizes our nation as a banner, that it is the US Constitution that unites the American people. I would fight to preserve the Constitution before and rather than dying over the design of the nation's flag that alters through time and change with each State's entry into the Union./
--
Robert Costa, NRO: So you donÂ’t want to do anything legally to limit speech. YouÂ’re making a political point.
GRAHAM: Right. I want to push back and say, “be responsible.” But I would vote for a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, okay. ...
I am suggesting that I wish that we could make people accountable.
NRO: How do you do that?
GRAHAM: Push back.
NRO: The question about your comments is about imposing any kind of legal pushback during a time of war.
GRAHAM: If I could, I would make it a crime to burn the flag, but the only way you could do that is through a constitutional amendment. ...In my view, the flag represents who we are as a nation. It is a symbol of who we are. ...ItÂ’s the one thing that unites us. ...I wish we could hold people accountable for their actions, but under free speech, you canÂ’t.

The White House threatened on Monday to veto any bill from Congress that would scuttle new rules aimed at keeping internet access free and open.
"If the president is presented with a resolution of disapproval that would not safeguard the free and open Internet, his senior advisers would recommend that he veto the resolution," the Office of Management and Budget said in a Statement of Administration Policy.

She's baaaaack! In the news, anyways. Who would have seen this coming, what with Crystal being such a nice, honest girl and all:
Authorities say former Duke Lacrosse accuser Crystal Mangum was arrested overnight Sunday for allegedly stabbing her boyfriend.
Around 3 a.m., officers responded to a stabbing at a home in the 3000 block of Century Oaks Drive.
When police arrived, they found a 47-year-old man stabbed in the chest.
A man who called 911 identified Mangum as the attacker.
"I told him she was trouble from the very beginning," said the caller.

Mark Steyn:
The guy “putting the troops at risk” here is Senator Graham, and General Petraeus and the other advocates of the one-way multiculti danse macabre. They’re telling our enemies the more you tread on our toes the more we’ll pretend not to notice and try to waltz you gaily round the floor one more time. Pre-emptive capitulation only invites more and more provocations. Like the Arabs say, a falling camel attracts many knives.

Morning all! It's gray and miserable here in NH, but at least temps are supposed to get up to the high 40s, low 50s today. Bring it on I say!
Some stupid Hollywood fluff to help y'all get into the spirit of the day. Seems <I>Glee</I> creator Ryan Murphy is trying to walk back his comments regarding Kings of Leon refusing his request to use their music in the show. I say "comments," but of course they were more like "asinine, vulgar invectives."
He's gone from this:

To this:
<I>"I didn't speak with as much clarity as I would have liked...Who am I to say 'Fuck you?' That's not what I meant. I completely understand when artists don't want a show or another artist to interpret their songs. In fact, I respect it. It's their personal work and I'd feel the same way."</I>
See that? He didn't speak with as much <I>clarity</I> as he would have liked. Because the meaning is so unclear when you call someone an asshole and tell them to fuck off. I mean, who <I>hasn't</I> mistaken such obvious sympathy for a childish tantrum? Happens all the time!
Methinks Murphy has been getting some pushback from the music community and it's starting to chafe. I love it. Couldn't have happened to a better asshole.

What happens is that we have to be honest about what "debt" really means. If people stop "lending" the federal government money, that doesn't affect the government's ability to spend (or for that matter, to pay debt) in any way. It means that the spending simply has to be revealed for what it is - the creation of new money from nothing.
Our "asian bankers" are not so dumb that they don't know we can pay our debts by walking over to a computer keyboard and creating dollars in accounts. It's not a question of "solvency" but rather a question of inflation/devaluation. Outside of food and energy, which are being driven up both by increased global demand and by speculation in the case of oil, and by global demand, speculation, and crop failures in the case of food, there isn't much inflation at this time. Plus, our asain buddies can't let the dollar crash - they still need our markets to keep their artificial export economies going and prevent massive domestic unemployment. They're tied to our consumption. If they choose to cripple it, they cut their own throats.

I was watching the storm progress on the Weather Channel this morning. I hope you and the other M&Ms down there are warm and dry!
50-something would actually BE our high here in NH. I'm sick to death of weather in the 30s and am eagerly awaiting something warm enough to melt the remaining snow around my house. The park bench near my front door is still mostly submerged in the white stuff, but it's been receding slowly since the start of March. If it's not down substantially by this weekend I'm going out there with a shovel and beating the hell out of the snowbanks. It weakens their spirit.
The poor robins look so confused these days. They hop around on the lawn and cock their heads as if to say, "Why is the grass white and cold and wet? Where's the green stuff and the worms?"

Victor Davis Hanson:
And I think I understand how such proportional representation will eventually be achieved by various ministries, and all contrary to state law: [cut to the chase, beyond education and employment, via eugenics]. As far as ‘kinetic” and “man-caused disasters” and “overseas contingency operations,” I think they have something do with killing terrorists. I also assume those who do fight the bad guys do not employ such euphemisms, which are for our, not their, consumption. [Given time for application, the PC revisionist vocabulary is universally used whether within the military or civilian settings.] In this kingdom of lies, this Oceania of the mind, I, a subject of the monarchy of untruth, navigate carefully, assuming what I read and see is simply not true — and cannot be said to be untrue. [end quote]
Can not or will not? By whom?
Hanson and readers, get a grip on reality. There are leaders, even within the ranks of the Republican Party, with the intelligence, devotion to Constitutional Liberty, and true grit to stand ground against all odds. Rand Paul does stipulate distinctions between truth and untruth.
There are champions of the US Constitution and national economic strength in Congress who refuse to bow to the globalist empirical powers pervading our ruinous US Federal authoritarian Government and pervading to ruin our personal lives.
Now ask yourself, demand of yourself, who can not or will not support the US Constitution first and foremost at this critical juncture? Who fears supporting the Constitution?
Others whom you perceive to be popular would "make you feel" uncomfortable. It is inconvenient to actually uphold the Constitution against the onslaught of group think. Neoconservatives and/or progressives will target you personally for taking the active stand upholding what truth yet functions in your mind and heart, though being shredded by our own governing officials and Bureaucracies.
It isn't the first time anyone questioned "Truth? What is truth?"
If you forfeit and extinguish what truth yet exists in your mind and heart, what truth that yet exists as Reason, feigning a vain rationale to return at a later and convenient time, as if you are willing or even capable to reignite what you know yet exterminated as truth, then actually you willingly or carelessly extinguish the existence of truth from reality; you feed deceit and utter destruction.
There is no need nor reason to forfeit truth. As mortals, pain is inevitable. As our founders did, ask yourself for what purpose are you willing to dedicate yourself, even to suffer, in order to provide good fruits from your life's efforts.
Defy the Lie.

As for myself I confront it as I find it, but then again I'm an XXLT so it's more sport than mission, and I don't need no stinkin' GOP leaders, if in fact they actually exist.

The joys of socialized medicine strike again in Britain!
British maternity wards in crisis
Infant mortality spirals at 14 NHS trusts as Government fails to keep its pledge on midwife shortages
This is the money pull-quote, IMO:
Fourteen NHS trusts have significantly raised baby death rates which are up to twice the national average. Shortages of staff, a rising birth rate, lack of training, inadequate equipment and poor leadership are leaving women in childbirth exposed to unacceptable risks.
It's utterly ridiculous that a modern society with access to all the advances of modern medicine should be experiencing such a spike in infant mortality.
Tony Falconer, president of the Royal College of Obstetricians, said: "The number of deliveries is going up, the complexity of the cases is going up and the outcomes are not as good as they could be. There is a major shortfall in midwives and we need 1,000 more consultant obstetricians. Why should a woman have a different level of expertise at 3am from 3pm? Even Liverpool maternity hospital, with 8,000 deliveries a year, only manages 24-hour cover on three days a week. The situation is very serious. Some hospitals are on the edge with staff working all the hours. Then something snaps."
Emphasis mine.

Did anyone hear about this? I just saw the link over at Mark Steyn's website:
MILITARY: Camp Pendleton gate incident prompted alarm
Camp Pendleton and national security authorities scrambled last weekend after two vehicles with Middle Eastern occupants drove onto the base shortly after a Marine reported overhearing terrorist threats from a group of men at a nearby gas station.
But in the end, base spokesman Jeff Nyhart said Friday, there was no attempt to breach base security and none of the men was deemed a danger...
Now, I understand that it's completely reasonable for people to get lost when trying to navigate to a highway on-ramp. I've done it myself, at night and in broad daylight. But two separate vehicles? Both around midnight? Driven by "Middle Eastern men?" Who claimed they didn't know each other? These men are either part of a very strange coincidence, or three of the most inept terrorist "canaries in a coalmine" in history.
Also, am I the only one who thinks maybe North Carolina needs to up the size of the sign that points to the on-ramp, to help prevent this kind of thing from happening? Make a bigass sign that reads, "THIS WAY TO THE HIGHWAY" with a HUGE arrow. That might be one time to support a little government spending.

I didn't have the heart (or time) to tell him that I suddenly had a painful back issue a few months ago. It wasnÂ’t hard for the affected sites to continue their operations. Since their servers had not been touched physically it was a simple matter to change a few settings to make the sites available to the public again under a new domain, something achieved in a few minutes. This is exactly what most of the streaming and file-sharing related sites have done.

You get what you pay for. People have no idea of the coming Apocalypse. People here in America are so used to getting comprehensive medical care in a timely fashion.
One thing that really drives medical costs up is our runaway litigation. No other country in the world has the litigation we have. Meaningful health care reform would have addressed this problem. Obviously, Obamacare does not.

A once-classified FBI memo reveals that the bureau treated a senior ABC News journalist as a potential confidential informant in the 1990s, pumping the reporter to ascertain the source of a sensational but uncorroborated tip that the network had obtained during its early coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing.
The journalist, whose name is not disclosed in the document labeled “secret,” not only cooperated but provided the identity of a confidential source, according to the FBI memo — a possible breach of journalistic ethics if he or she did not have the source’s permission.

Sometime after the Macintosh came out, I made an effort to buy the schematics for it with an eye to turning it into a control system for something, maybe a weather station. $300 later and a handful of poorly copied pages out of chap 6 from the service manual, I stormed back into the little dealer that tried to sell me that, and the poor thing (the computer) has been a doorstop since. The dealer went out of business a year or so later, and I still don't have the tech manual.
It was my first storebought computer and I've built more powerful ones since, but I have a soft spot for the old Osbornes.
