Well written paper on overcriminalization of the federal code (H/T Overlawered)

This from the Heritage Foundation. The case referenced here has been touted by the libtards as a witch hunt by Republicans against Democrats. As the paper states, this is really not so. They state that it has become common in the U.S. and blame congress.  I say it is a case of intentionally vague laws (congress), overly zealous prosecutors, and gullible juries.

The pathway to “promotion” among prosecutors is convictions. So they will do anything to get convictions. It looks like this woman in the paper was railroaded. Personally I don’t think the appeals court went far enough. Once again the people will wind up paying for this travesty just like the case in NC.

When are the SOBs going to start holding the prosecutors accountable for this shit?

Interesting that I found this today after putting my jury questionnaire for federal court in the mail.

We used to have 3 factories in the general area that made candy. Now we have none. It wasn't high union wages that run them out of the country and this time it wasn't over regulation although that hurt.

It was the damn high price of sugar in this country. People just do not know the extent of the problems caused by government meddling like this.

LA police to step up intelligence monitoring
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES—A top Los Angeles counterterrorism commander says police will be stepping up intelligence monitoring as news of Osama Bin Laden's death spreads across the globe, spurring possible reprisal attempts on U.S. soil.

Assistant Commanding Officer Blake Chow, who heads the department's counterterrorism and special operations bureau, told the Associated Press Sunday night that officers will be keeping a close ear on intelligence buzz to develop immediate response plans accordingly.

With its numerous tourist attractions famed worldwide, Los Angeles has been pinpointed as a top target for possible terrorist actions.

Looks more like a general paying attention than specific threat.

Re the elimination of OBL, I was thinking it would be great if we could give special praise to those men who carried out this great work of extermination.  But then I remembered that our oh-so-patriotic muslim Americans would see to it that the families of those heroes were victimized.

Osama is dead, and it is a day for great celebration.  But now, what's to be done with the 5th column in the US?

So, the Guantanamo suspects that some people wanted to release and some people didn't want to interrogate harshly actually gave up the courier. Four years ago. Ahem.

And then more recently they narrowed down where he was.

But let's not forget that first part, huh?

I guess maybe there is some point in interrogating terrorists? Maybe there's some value in their answers? Maybe they don't "always just tell you what you want to hear"?

Hence the only reason Obama kept GITMO open. He knew this was being worked on and is smart enough to know he would get flamed if this came to pass.

Oh and remember Bush's statement that Obama may want to basically "examine the evidence" before closing GITMO? I think it is mostly related to this- plus who knows what else is next.

55  "It is hard to build a shrine on "the sea".

The question is not why they buried him at see, but rather when they did so. They did this because according to Sharia, bodies must be disposed of within 24 hours. This is a scandal, not merely for our government binding itself to the dictates of a foreign and hostile faith, but for the fact that we are now lacking the physical evidence of his death. The American press should have had access to his body- and I would imagine we would want several independant examinations of the corpse in order to verify the identity. This is another massive scandal, unless like Michelle Bachmann, you take the Skinny Freak at his word. Either way, I wouldn't expect Mitch McConnell to get too upset over this.

57 GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Monday condemned the killing by U.S. forces of Osama bin Laden and mourned him as an "Arab holy warrior."

"We regard this as a continuation of the American policy based on oppression and the shedding of Muslim and Arab blood," Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip, told reporters.

Though he noted doctrinal differences between bin Laden's al Qaeda and Hamas, Haniyeh said: "We condemn the assassination and the killing of an Arab holy warrior. We ask God to offer him mercy with the true believers and the martyrs."

Jake Tapper with some interesting tidbits this morning.  Says that military recommended bombing Osama's compound in March, but Obama feared too many civilians would be killed and there would be no evidence of Osama's body left in the rubble.  Alsdo the actual raid was scheduled this weekend because there would be no moon.  Tapper says it was pushed back from Saturday to Sunday due to the weather, but I doubt they would have run such an op the day of the WHCD.

Also says that somebody at Bill Daley's table at the WHCD asked him why their White House tour scheduled for Sunday was canceled, and he just said "I dunno, maybe a pipe broke."  Panetta and gates were also at the WHCD and did not give away anything.

Maybe.  But I suspect that the "Paki government's knowledge and help" were all benefitting OBL, as they worked to keep him alive and comfortable.  There are too many coincidences in terms of where that compound was located.

Posted by: sartana at May 02, 2011 03:58 AM (7Xm5b)

61 @55 Eh. In my view the Sharia law gave us a convenient excuse to dispose of Osama's body ASAP.  What a hot potato it would have been otherwise!  I could imagine riots around several US Embassies in the Muslim world demanding that the body be turned over for burial.  Could have really messed up the PR.

Posted by: rockmom at May 02, 2011 03:59 AM (Y01Pi)

62 So, any chance this is why William and Kate cancelled or postponed their honeymoon? Not that the Brits knew it was going to happen, but maybe the US told them something was going to happen and, for security reasons, it might be better if they didn't travel this weekend.

Posted by: sydney jane at May 02, 2011 04:01 AM (+zLTj)

63 Methos,  that is my question.

If they were going for DNA vidence,  it had to have happened a week ago.  But then there would have been the carping that we didn't observe Islamic custom.

So if it happened yesterday,  then they can say they buried him at sea,  except then this shows Obama was either playing golf or yukking it up at the dinner while the Seals were risking their lives.

I don't think Obama is a good enough actor to put on that performance at the WHCD while wondering if the mission was going to be successful.

Something is odd here.   Plus,  I am wondering why burying him at sea after calling in the press wouldn't have been good enough.  Surely there are some press people in that area who could have been called in.  This is just going to cause more questions.

@62 I think that is right.  Will and Kate had reportedly planned a honeymoon in Jordan and other parts of the Mediterranean.  The British press knows EVERYTHING that goes on with the Royals, so it was a total surprise that they canceled the honeymoon.

Handling and execution of the operation (by US forces) is not correct. The Pakistani government should have been kept in the loop," Musharraf told CNN-IBN in an exclusive interview.

111 bin Laden buried at sea solves a whole bunch of problems.. problems with the Islamic world (the ones we still trust, if any), problems with protecting the body from people who would want to make a martyr out of him, etc. etc.

All this conspiracy talk assumes one thing.  That our military and intelligence people and all the people on board that ship are liars.  I may not trust Obama, but I DO trust our people in uniform.  If a sailor tells me he saw bin Laden's body, and that it was dumped in the brink (I kinda like the idea of bin Laden being fish food, actually) then it's good enough for me.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at May 02, 2011 04:37 AM (Do528)

112 You seriously can count on the government staying in the food price business.

While I do agree with Vic, the fact is that relying on corn syrup in everything really stabilizing prices.  They would be jumping all over the place much more if the government didn't do that.  In the long run, that would be OK.  I think we'd have less of a problem with obesity, too.  But politicians are scared of people voting them out of office if food prices spike near an election, so until we have braver politicians, the government will stay involved.

He should have been hung by his ankles from a deck gun on a US Navy ship, with a sign on his stomach that read, "So go all terrorists.  Who's next?"  Then, when the carrion birds had pecked enough of him away that he was no longer recognizable and the sun had dried him out like jerky, he should have been lit on fire and his worthless ashes dumped in the sea.

Of course they are going to say that he was buried at sea according to Islamic rites, the whole purpose of that is to look nice. How he actually was disposed of is irrelevant, not sure why any of us should care. My guess is that they haven't disposed of the body yet but are saying that they have so as not to offend the delicate sensibilities of the Religion of the Perpetually Aggrieved.

I am sure that they have already done DNA testing, it really wouldn't take that long, just a few hours for the test itself. This guy had lots of kids and they had years to get the familial samples for comparison and to build the pedigrees, from that you just need a profile to plug in and you let the software perform the calculations. The longest part would probably be getting the sample to the lab, normally this kind of stuff is done at the AFDIL lab in Dover, DE but that's a long plane trip. We have contractor labs in Afghanistan, it's possible they could have run the biological sample there and forwarded the data to AFDIL for comparison.

As far as pictures, conspiracy theorists would say those were faked. The only proof I need is the reaction of his allies and they are all saying he is dead. That's good enough for me.

As far as it being a conspiracy, occam applies.  If it were fake, all he has to do is show up, once, with a newspaper and the TOTUS is completely discredited.  If he stays in hiding forever, TOTUS can say he killed him off and claim victory, but he's betting that UBL would stay in hiding forever, and not embarrass him.  And then there would be the intel and military types complicit in the fakery, too... and neither UBL or BHO is real big on their list of people to do favors for...

UBL is deader than BHO's dead eyes.

As far as dumping the body in the ocean goes, I only hope it was out of the back of a C17 at altitude, so it could skip across the waves at 400KPH as it broke into bite-sized pieces.

Besides, defiling dead bodies is the muzzie schtick.
