California Democratic lawmakers passed a rare on-time state budget Wednesday over Republican objections, but the plan — balanced with a blend of taxes, cuts and clever accounting — faces an uncertain fate at the hands of Gov. Jerry Brown.
But they did so by returning to old strategies that have papered over California's deficits for years: delaying the payment of billions in bills, skipping debt repayments and penciling in money that may not materialize.
The budget was the first that Democrats have approved without the minority party since voters last fall empowered them to do so, and they seemed to relish the opportunity.
The plan would push off payment of $2.8 billion owed to schools and community colleges until the following fiscal year, along with $540 million in University of California funds. A controversial sale of state buildings worth $1.2 billion, abandoned months ago as not cost effective, would return in a slightly different form.
The slim hope of $700 million in Medi-Cal money to be handed over by federal government was also etched into the plan.
Also included in lawmakers' calculations is $200 million netted by enforcing sales tax collections from Internet retailers who have no physical presence in California.
Car registration fees would rise by $12 in the Democrats' budget, and local sales taxes would increase by a quarter of a cent on July 1. Because a 1-cent temporary sales tax hike and a larger, different vehicle fee hike will expire the day before, consumers and most drivers will still pay lower sales taxes beginning next month and their car fees will still be lower overall, Democrats noted.
Residents in fire-prone rural areas in which the state is responsible for firefighting would have to pay a new fee — roughly $150 per occupied building, according to legislative budget staffers.

Front page topper today is how we cannot trust the pakis and they cannot trust us, and they hate us anyhow. Likely military coup to follow, after which they will be just about like Iran, except that they have the bomb now.
And in an editorial, someone is proclaiming how "Washington" should now treat the Persian problem, seeing as how A-jad is about out, the hardline clerics are in total command, and no diplomacy can work.
Boned on the left, and boned on the right.

I read somewhere back in the day that when Musharraf was still in town that he had a deal with the US to safegaurd the Paki nukes. As in, we had the ability to go in and take them out of the country if things really went pear-shaped.
I wonder if we still have that info. If we did, I'd go in now, take them all and give them to India, then I'd send a "strongly worded" message to the current regime.
"Ahem, NOW we will discuss this whole terrorism thing with you."

The Los Angeles Unified School District on Tuesday, with a 5-2 vote on a new dairy contract, became by far the largest district in the country to remove flavored milk from its menus, part of its effort to make school food healthier and help combat childhood obesity.
The milk issue has overshadowed other changes in the district's food services division, which serves 650,000 meals a day at 1,000 sites. A menu overhaul is underway that will mean fewer meals that resemble fast food and more vegetarian offerings. Spinach tortellini in butternut squash sauce and California sushi rolls, along with many ethnic foods, are to be added. Corn dogs, chicken nuggets and other breaded items are out, said Dennis Barrett, food services director.
The Board of Education does not generally vote on individual menu items, but it weighed in on flavored milk because it must approve large contracts. The board approved a five-year, $100-million dairy contract Tuesday that excludes chocolate and strawberry milk. It includes low-fat and nonfat plain milk as well as soy and Lactaid milks.
Because the typical LAUSD student, a Mexican kid, sure does love his sushi and soy milk.

'The saleswoman, Sirene Abou-Chakra, replied by suggesting that Obama had a special deal.“This is a pre-alpha product that is being released to a select few clients,” she wrote in an email, referring to the first stage of a product’s roll-out. “I’d be happy to get you into the beta if you’re interested.” A similar email went out to at least one other Republican digital media firm, a Republican source said.'
'But Google spokesman Jake Parrilo denied strenuously that the Obama campaign had been granted special access to the pilot program, and chalked the email up to inaccurate “puffery” by the sales representative. The ad that appeared on RealClearPolitics, he said, was not a Google ad at all.'I am so glad that this has been cleared up. A Google rep would never lie because that would be evil.

What does this put Iran tech-wise, into the 50's?
Iran successfully launches second satellite into orbit
The United States and its allies fear Iran is seeking to build nuclear bombs and are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into orbit can also be used to launch warheads.
Well, duh. When the Iranians increase their missile range about 1000-2000km, that'll put the lower 48 states within the range of the Iranian missiles that will be based in Venezuela.

Only if you look at macro events such as a satellite launch.
The real problem is that many many small technological events have occurred in the interim that can be used (by the Iranians or other hostiles) to jump start a weapons program. For example, small complex electronics and GPS come to mind.

Indeed. I'm of the opinion that all the Iranians really need at this point is enough enriched uranium for their crude nuke warheads.
All it would take to destroy Israel would be 2 or 3 Hiroshima-sized warheads detonated in Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Mitt Rockefeller
[Quote:]
"Despite my affiliation with the Republican Party, I
don't think of myself as highly partisan."
-- Mitt Romney in his book No
Apology
And there it was again.
...Rockefeller Republicanism is Mitt Romney's political core, his every political instinct, and it expresses itself and will continue to express itself as Romney moves through this campaign. Asking him to stop is like demanding the Pope not sound so, well, Catholic.
All of which poses an interesting dilemma for Republicans.
Here's a great candidate for president. He's got the looks, the charm, the energy, the brains and, if not Rockefeller-style money, at least enough plus the ability to raise more.
The problem:
He tries hard to sound like Ronald Reagan.
But he thinks like Nelson Rockefeller.

On being presidential, JFK traded off our established US missile system in Turkey for Khrushchev to take his Cuban missiles home. It didn't take so long for Kennedy to save face internationally by choosing to inherit the French empirical mantel lost and forfeit in Indochina aka Vietnam.
Today, if they're not in place yet, it's time for Britain/NATO US ally to put up a serious missile defense system in the Falklands to counter from the south any Venezuela/Iran threat.
Side note, Prince Harry won't stay long in Afghanistan if given the Falklands' outpost installation to prepare. And Argentina won't be so eager to invade those Isles again.

My wife was diagnosed with a soy reaction, so we started reading labels. We were shocked at how invasive soy (or a soy derivative) products have become in our food chain. It is almost impossible to find a soy-free and/or Hugh Fructose Corn Syrup free food item.
As far as we could tell, there are no chocolate products made in the US that do not use soy lethicin.
I am still surprised that the givernment requires labeling of food product contents--too much information for the proles.

It can really be hit or miss. Sales staff at gun stores can be very helpful and accomodating, and sometimes they can be real pricks who act like you're some kind of burden. I've been in gun stores before and had a great experience, and other times I've gone in with money to spend and walked out empty-handed because I couldn't get the time of day from the floor staff.

The left has picked a side in Sudan and they didn't pick Islam this time. All the liberals, BBC, NPR, VOA, and the JEF have identified northern Islamic Sudan as the aggressor and told them to quit attacking the south. Holy dumb fuck, this makes no sense, doesn't the left always align themselves with the ROPMA?
Apparently there is a group of people who are even more beloved by liberals than the muzzies: "The Navi Azande are the third largest nationality in Southern Sudan. They are found in Maridi, Yambio and Tambura districts in the tropical rain forest belt."
It's nice to know that the left can be counted on to oppose radical Islam when the heads getting chopped are blue rain forest peoples.

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Foreclosure filings in the U.S. tumbled last month to the lowest in almost four years as banks weighed down by an increasing inventory of seized homes delayed processing defaults, according to RealtyTrac Inc.
Yes!!!!! Foreclosures are at their lowest in 4 years!!! Never mind it's only because banks have delayed processing them. We are on the road to recovery. No bumps!!!!

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, though applications remain above levels consistent with a healthy economy.
The Labor Department said Thursday that unemployment benefit applications fell 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 414,000, the second drop in three weeks. That's a positive sign that layoffs are slowing.
Oh yes comrades, fewer jobs were cut than the previous week. That's a sure sign that we have a booming economy

Yeah, I'm still looking for a good comic book store now that I've moved. The one where I used to live was great and the owner was a. nice, b. knew his stuff and c. actually knew how to run a business. I asked him once if that didn't mean he got thrown out of the Comic Book Guy Guild and he laughed then noted that wasn't really funny.

So, what are the odds that Dearbornistan will blow up (no pun intended) on Friday?
Dearborn Prepares for Pastor Terry Jones' Return
Just in time for the Arab International Festival. Should be fun, in a jihadi kind of way.
As of Monday, the Facebook event for the Friday rally had over 140 confirmed attendees.
Further, the latest Stand Up America Now release suggests that a counter-protest is planned, with “thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of people opposing our rally.” It calls on the National Guard to come to Dearborn to protect both groups.
However, current public safety plans consist of a joint effort by Dearborn police and the Wayne County SheriffÂ’s Department. The former will be largely responsible for monitoring JonesÂ’ City Hall speech and walk down Schaefer, while the latter will assist local forces in handling public safety at the festival.
Is this the same festival where Christians were told last year they couldn't be anywhere near the festival grounds and couldn't distribute any kind of Christian literature? Or was that another dhimmi-endorsed festival?

Mara Laisson on NPR:
Obama ignores War Powers Act, and the significance of this is... Republicans are becoming isolationists! Mara then proceeds to play clip after clip of Republicans expressing doubts about Obama's military adverturism, and hoping the troops can come home from the 'Stan as soon as the military situation allows us to responsibly do so, OMG! Just like Ron Paul!!
The Mara poses a real puzzler: for some reason, Obama feels no need to defend his actions or justify them to the American people, and no need to to respond to Congress with anything more than a cursory dismissal of their concerns. Gosh, I wonder why Obama doesn't think he needs to follow the rules he demanded his predecessors follow? That force could be protecting him from any consequences? Is there some institution that is asleep at the switch?
Well, Mara? Bueller? Anyone?

Our local Gun Store owner is really a great guy, very helpful and professional. He opened business with only one employee, a reliable guy who showed up on time, knew the store stock, etc. But over time, that employee developed a negative attitude and lost his job over it. I'd add from my tag-along shopping experience that part of what makes this store a comfortable place is that the owner's professionalism includes his exercise of discretion, having booted out thugs up to no good. -- When we were in 6th Grade taking an NRA rifle target class at school camp (1960s), before we touched a thing, it was Safety First.

Yeah, but Kratos kinda didn't really learn anything from his atonement quest. The thing that best sums up Kratos is when Poseidon's love-slave is calling out to be rescued, sees that it is Kratos, and says never mind.
Kratos, of course, uses her to prop a door open and she is horribly crushed after he gets through.

LOL, guys. The GPS in the car died. My son was playing with the language options. Spanish was fine, but he tried to select British English and that was the end.
I'm sure there's deep, deep meaning in that.
And I let the grass in the back go too long, so yesterday the lawn mower was fussing and stalling. It was too hot and humid to finish it all, so I tried again this morning.
Maybe I should just buy an old-fashioned non-electric one. That will be harder for me to break and light enough for the 10 year old to push! This one we have is so heavy I can barely push it.

They are the biggest fucking assholes I have ever come across in any retail situation anywhere at any time.
