Sen. Jim DeMint on Cut, Cap and Balance
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat, has scheduled a “motion to table” vote on Friday for the Cut, Cap, Balance Act. If 51 senators vote for the motion, the bill will be scrapped — something Reid clearly wants. DeMint warns strongly against choosing that course.

Yeah.. I was wondering about that.. If the gang of six plan goes thru, the Bush tax cuts would be dead and not sunset next year. Those cuts have been a tool of the left ever since Obama got in power.. the lefties were just drooling over the idea of them expiring.
So, now they're going to agree to even deeper, permanent cuts? WTF? No way.
I wish we had more details about this plan.. I really don't want to lose my mortgage deduction if I am stuck at the same tax rate.

It's better to get past the WSJ paywall access through hard copy subscription than through Kindle. I just paid $60 for six months of home delivery with free online (and there is truly a spectacular amount of content through their site); through Amazon it's $14.99/mo. and you have to read it on your Kindle.
Practice tip: Sometimes when your subscription runs out WSJ offers to re-up on the same terms, and sometimes they lose their minds and try to gouge you. If the latter happens just quit and they'll crawl back with good terms again within a few weeks just like your local fishwrap does.

Had an interesting church vestry meeting last night. Our attendance and contributions have been falling recently so we have been working on a growth plan. But nobody wants to talk about how our liberal priest is running people off with her sermons about welcoming illegal aliens and her Obama bumper stickers and our lesbian choir director bring her girlfriend to church. She was very careful her first few years to stay neutral, but in the last 18 months or so the mask has dropped and people are pissed. I really, really like her as a person and she is a good leader and a good preacher when she isn't being political.
Why do liberals ruin everything? Why can't they just STFU and be liberal in their own homes....they have to shove it in everyone's face and politicize everything. This church brought me and my husband to Christ and I do not want to leave it. Grrrrrrrr.

But Erickson has a point about Boehner's terrible negotiating leading possibly to a bypass of any SCOTUS ruling about the Individual Mandate.
Essentially, Boehner wants the IM on the block if the tax code isn't overhauled as part of the debt-ceiling/budget/spending deal. Trouble is, having the IM get automatically yanked could potentially render any action by SCOTUS moot. This could lead to permanent Obamacare.

This is highly problematic for us Catholics, though. No matter how retarded, liberal (BIRM), or mumbling in another language our pastor might be, we still need us some transubstantiated Host, and it's not like you can just whip that up in the kitchen. I drive out of my way for a pastor with a grip because my local priest is ... well, he is a priest so I don't want to ream him too badly ... not reaching me with his sermons.

My husband was RC before we joined the Episcopal Church. Neither of us agrees with their stance on ordination of women. Before all the SHTF over the gay bishop, the Episcopal Church was great for us. We used to go to a big church whose rector was scrupulously neutral - all the liberals thought he was liberal but all the conservatives thought he was conservative. Even through all the stuff with the bishop, he did not take sides but led the parish through many forums and discussions of it so everyone had a chance to vent. His preaching was strictly Biblical and I learned a ton from him. That is my ideal, and I know it can be done.
Eventually I will probably end up leading an effort to get rid of our rector if she keeps up with the liberal crap. My feeling is the church is US, it isn't the priest. We were here first and we should not have to leave because of her!

Theologically speaking, you are absolutely correct.
About your point on the ordination of women, I was where you were also. When I started looking pretty deeply at the Catholic theology of it, I understood it and it then made more sense to me than the view of any other denomination. The RC Church isn't a cafeteria, you either take it all, or nothing. That's why it's called "faith."
But....as Hrothgar pointed out, too many RCs these days feel otherwise.

General Electric reported a 21.6 percent rise in profit, topping estimates, boosted by strong demand outside the United States for its heavy equipment including jet engines and electric turbines.
The strongest growth came in the company's railroad locomotive unit, which posted a 74 percent surge in revenue following an extended downturn.
The energy unit stood out as a weak spot, with a 19 percent drop in profit, reflecting slower demand for wind turbines and the cost of integrating recently acquired companies.
See comrades, some companies are doing just dandy in this economy. And it's all because of "green" energy

Thirty percent of America's jobless, 4.4 million people, have been out of work for more than a year, according to Labor Department data. "It really is going to take a concentrated effort of employers to give people a chance who haven't worked in a while," said the department's chief economist, Betsey Stevenson. Thirty percent of America's jobless, 4.4 million people, have been out of work for more than a year, according to Labor Department data. "It really is going to take a concentrated effort of employers to give people a chance who haven't worked in a while," said the department's chief economist, Betsey Stevenson. "I don't want us to say this is the new normal and move on."
Yes, those employers better getting going and start hiring people. It's up to them you know.

91Essentially, Boehner wants the IM on the block if the tax code isn't overhauled as part of the debt-ceiling/budget/spending deal. Trouble is, having the IM get automatically yanked could potentially render any action by SCOTUS moot. This could lead to permanent Obamacare.
Actually, I'd rather have a legislative repeal of the IM. Legislatures making (and repealing) law is always to be preferred, and O'care collapses if the IM is lost. Also, a victory in SCOTUS even WITH the IM is not a given.

That's why we're waiting a few years, Vic.
I am waiting for the total implosion. Then I follow the age-old mantra - buy low, sell high.
Houses in the Sacramento market that were 1.2M just 5 years ago and now going for 700K. I figure 2 more years of Obama and I'll be able to snap one up for about 400K.
But in the end, that's where my wife's family is, and I told her Dad when I married her that I would bring her home someday. I wish she was from someplace sane...but she's not. I'll end up there whether I want to or not.
If I want to stay married that is.

Trimming, by being pro-active, requires cutting a lot more trees, because you just don't know which will be a problem. So you have to take the time to hack and clean up all the tress that MIGHT be an issue. I'm glad that's how the math works out, because I, too, have objections to cutting the trees. Not that the trees should not be responsibly pruned - that I agree with. But a person can have a beautiful specimen-quality tree and the power company dudes just carelessly hack it to bits. That's what really pissed people off.
In the end, power needs to go under ground. That's the final solution to that problem.

Yup, cafeteria Catholicism. It's the same with Protestants too, though a little more obvious with Catholicism since it's a more structured dogma.
My pastor sometimes gets political in the pulpit and it bothers me, even though 99% of the time I agree with what he's saying. He's supposed to be the pastor to the entire flock and I know there are those who are on the other side of the issues. They shouldn't feel uncomfortable either.
That being said, I have no patience for liberation theology. It's neither liberating nor theologically sound.

I don't know if this works for other denominations, but the trick with Catholic churches is to go to the early mass. Usually that is the old-timers, less fooling about and more of a straight mass. It even works in really hippy parishes.

#114 I've been out of work for 13 months. Oh, I have a bullshit consulting job on my resume, but I haven't had any real work since my last real consulting gig got cancelled in June last year. It sucks. A lot. Many days I feel like giving up and think I will never work again. I've applied for over a hundred actual jobs, done all the netrwoking, been to industry conferences, keep my LinkedIn page spruced up, met with four different recruiters...nothing. Have had six interviews since May but no offers yet. Before that I only had one interview since last June, and that was with the Fed and they strung me out for 3 months before turning me down.
Sorry if I sound whiny, but some people really don't understand what is going on with a lot of middle-aged white collar people like me. I've been unemployed before, a couple of times for a year, but I have never felt as pessimistic about my opportunities as I do now. And I didn't have a huge mortgage and giant credit card balances and college tuition before.

I suspect it depends on how heavy the urbanization is. My neighborhood is quite mature, but when they put in the new fiber lines across the street they went under ground. It looked fairly easy - they had a fancy machine that plowed them under the earth in one spot and steered it to a different spot where it came up down the road.

I read an article last year indicating that much of the EMP hardening wasn't really as effective as hoped for, and the testing had been wussified to make everything pass. (Sorry - don't have the reference link any more.)
I'm pessimistic about the security of our fleets and field armies abroad.
But then, so long as the strategic arsenal remains in place, I'm not terribly worried about US territory. We just need to make it clear that EMP will be treated as a nuclear attack, and met in kind.

True enough. I worked on the installation of a 345 Kv underground line in Bridgeport, CT. One of the biggest problems was working around some of the old (and by old, I mean decaying) UG infrastucture.
Hell, there were sewer and water mains that would break if you looked at 'em the wrong way. Additionally, many of these were unmapped or located wrong. It took us 2 years to run 7 miles of line. It was a huge pain in the ass.

Since I am convert, I figure when I accidentally wind up in one of the liberal guy's masses, it is my cross to bear.
Best sermon I ever heard was a retired priest who was travelling through Indiana and served a mass on Sunday. The entire sermon was about how people should actually feel shame, and he actually said "Monica Lewinsky! Instead of hanging her head in shame she wrote a book about it!!" He also went on a rant about how Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner traveled around Europe together and his friend, the manager of the biggest hotel in Barcelona, refused them a room because they were breaking the commandments. It was great! He was pretty old (and I am betting half off the parish didn't even know who Ava Gardner was) but he was still fired up and preaching the truth.
So, on days when I am afflicted with some of these liberal priests, I remember that the Church withstood the Borgia's and the Avignon captivity, and I just figure it is my duty to pay attention to the mass and ignore the goofy stuff.

My in-laws do real estate on the side - they own a couple apartment buildings and so on. They've taken a bath. They bought one condo for investment to rent it out. They paid $189K. It's now worth $45K. This is in the Sacramento proper. They still own some property in the Bay Area that hasn't taken quite the bath that their Sac properties have.
I'm relying on them to time the market for me. They're telling me to wait until late 2012 and then jump on something. Based on the trend lines I've been charting for about a year now, I think they are right.

I don't think churches are lib or conserv purely by denomination. Some denominations are more lib than others but you can find vast extremes inside denominations. I had to leave the Episcopalians because they were soooooo far gone. I toyed with the presbyterians and the methodists and they too were too liberal. I finally went catholic mostly because of my husband and children and the research I had done.
It's interesting that I get at least 10 people a year in my rcia class who are leaving the other churches (most of the others leave for marriage reasons) because of the liberalism.
Liberalism and christianity don't mix regardless of how hard they try---it always eventually shows itself a lie.

That's an impressive one. My father refers to one parish in Central FL as 'Our lady of the Copacabana', for the interior decor. It actually has overhead screens that display hymn lyrics.
I don't mind priests that advance from the pulpit to deliver a homily, if they have something to say. If it's merely an affectation, it's obvious. Several I know make a point of advancing during youth masses and masses for First Communion, and it think that in those instances, it's an effective means of speaking.

Girlfriend, that is nothing.
In the 70s/80s our parish (which was part of an "Interfaith Center"... should give you an idea of how weird it was) had rock masses ("Feeling groovy, just had the Eucharist"... no, no, actually it was the Our Father set to Rolling Stones music), folk masses (they were the default), children's masses (just sy of the priest dressed up as Barney), and my personal favorite - liturgical dance masses. The latter featured women in white unitards and no bras undulating around the altar. (This has all continued to this day.)
Not good.
But even worse than that was the politics from the pulpit. We walked out in solidarity with Vietnam Vets on more than one occasion. And, of course, we had nuns and priests leaving the church and running off to get married.
I love my parents and they were good traditional Catholics, but they should not have kept taking us to that parish. (At least they wisely pulled us out of CCD classes when the nun started talking about being "hung up on your virginity" in one class my sister attended.)
Irongrandpa is right - you should feel good when you leave church. I usually felt irritated.

I'm an RC convert also and my biggest problem with the Catholic church now is the illegal alien issue. My wife squeezes my hand every time it is brought up at Mass to keep me from jumping up and "expressing my opinion."
Yep. That's why the only envelopes I put money in are the ones for "parish building repair funds". I absolutely refuse to support the illegals. Remember that any money you give to your parish ---20% is sent to the diocese which is big on the social justice (illegal alien support) front. When asked for money for the sister parish, the bishop's lenten appeal, the capital campaign, or anything, I say that I will be happy to give to those and not just to the building repair fund if and when they distinguish between helping criminals and non criminals. Sorry.

Your wife and mine must be sharing notes.
I am all for taking care of immediate human needs via our shelter. I donate that stuff - diapers, toothpaste, soap, etc. Just the basic necessities to get people through the week.
I part ways with my brethren when they fail to acknowledge the word "illegal" in the phrase "illegal alien."
Thankfully, our clergy doesn't go there. They understand the whole "render unto Caesar thing." Some of our parish...not so much.
Then again, Northern Virginia is like the Berkeley of the East.

"In the end, power needs to go under ground. That's the final solution to that problem."
When we were buying a house, I paid attention and noticed the lack of power lines in this neighborhood.
Unfortunately, I didn't pay close enough attention. Most of the neighborhood has lines underground. Right behind our house, they are above ground.
Six days after we moved in, they were on the ground for about 30 hours.

so I had the weirdest dream
I dreamt that I was at a Cardinals-Nationals game, in DC
and that I was watching the game from an elevated covered platform right over the pitcher's mound (don't ask me what held it up)
but it started to collapse and I was dangling over the pitcher in the middle of the game
and the fans in the stands were all very nicely color-coordinated with matching sweatshirts
it was all very odd

Ha! Good for her! More folks need to do that.
Contemplating the problems the poor Church of England and the Catholic Church have suffered reinforces (in my mind) the importance of a non-heirarchical church structure. Maximum independence should be the rule, so that the cancer in one can't so easily be crammed down onto others. Of course, as a protestant I'm biased toward that view, but I think it holds up to logic. Decentralize, and leave it to the believers of each meeting to police up their own bunch. The bad churches will fall down, and those who care about learning God's truth will find others to worship with. Let the theological battles be fought out in each group.

Cheer up, my friend. Go find that Richard Miniter column Ace blogged on earlier this week, where he gives all these great reasons why the Democratic Party is on its last legs. Like all socialist regimes, we are running out of other people's money, and when we finally do, liberalism will collapse. Miniter even said Obama is not the new FDR, he is the new Gorbachev, presiding over the end of a failed socialist dream. George Will picked up on this in his column yesterday.

Most of the illegal churches are iglesias evangelicas. They are leaving the catholic churches in droves to join the iglesias penecostial. In fact, here in libtard Northern Va, the public schools are jam packed with multiple services of evangelical protestant illegal services every weekend. The one on my street has evangelical services starting friday night and there is a steady stream through sunday.

Yeh, but you sure can feel the difference btn not humid and humid. We had weeks of over 100 and 18% humidity. Then it got humid and was still getting up to 105. I just kept walking out of the house or a store and getting about 3 steps before I started slowing down and wondering where the oxygen was.

Businesses love cheap labor.. and they are paying both political parties to continue to ignore the problem.

The churches don't want to piss off libtards because they know they will leave and take their money with them. They don't worry too much about pissing off conservatives because they won't leave--they might change churches but they are hard to drive away because they look at the big picture.
I told one of our priests that if he was going to give a death penalty homily again I would expect an abortion homily in the intervening weeks. Afraid to do that?
Posted by: dagny at July 22, 2011 09:58 AM (GnPWT)Sad. I know the Catholic church is on hard times, but I thought the evangelicals were pretty much die-hard Conservative. Now I'm starting to wonder.

Something about hard times brings out the crazy, too. In the depression there was "pole sitting" and dance marathons?

For the SSN thing, no, you shouldn't be asked that until providing documentation at you are a citizen after getting a job offer. Remember, your SSN is not to be used as an identification number by any private organization. Everyone does, but they're not supposed to do that.
Further, should your credit history be a condition for employment?
I'm torn on this. My initial response is no because there are far too many instances of credit reports being wrong and there are many reasons that a person may have bad credit that have nothing to do with whether or not they're a good employee. On the other hand, an employer has to have some way to look at reliability and every other method has pretty much been eliminated. On the third hand, I want to know what happens to all those credit reports. The employers using these are opening themselves up for a huge amount of liability for identity theft when someone in the shred room realizes just what's in his/her grimy little hands and what can be done with it.

Once again, the Church is blundering into politics, badly. As with the death penalty, they are engaging in every ugly political trick, using loaded code words and terms, supporting spurious law suits, demonizing victims and anyone who dares to oppose them, and painting false hope for yet another 'comprehensive' law. They never explain what will happen if the illegals decide not to take the 'path to citizenship'. They refuse to use the word amnesty, and they claim that any opponent is 'anti-immigration'.
And they refuse to speak against the immigration laws of other nations, particulally those of Mexico.

If you want to help people, you go to where they are-- or should be-- and you work there.

The idea that people think a catholic church is more hoity-toity than another cracks me up
Oh, I was just kidding. However, I'm kidding because that's frequently the image people have of St. Mary's when I run into other area Catholics. You know how transient this area is, so I hear it a lot. Especially after an election year during the staff churn.
TBH, a very large chunk of the parish is active military stationed in the area or ex-military. It's pretty conservative.
As far as diocesan MVP goes, I think Fr. DeCelles was pretty awesome before he went to St. Raymond's. He gets my vote for best priest in the diocese, and I am very happy with the 3 full-time priests we have here.

I would like to see your credit score and review your financial reports to ensure that you will be able to meet your obligations. You gonna hand that over to me?

I agree the politics of the EC is "unorthodox," but I really don't see anything in their liturgy that is not: nothing is in contradiction to the Nicene Creed, the traditional standard of Christian orthodoxy.
If you don't see it now, you will shortly, or in social ministry. My Mom was Episcopalian. And while I am a revert now, I thought about going there. I didn't because the EC isn't what it was in her day.

Yes, but should they provide the SSN and let you run a credit report just to be considered for an interview?
Should a credit report be a screening device just for applicants?
And WTF with the snide "wanting the gov to decide" remark? That was never, ever part of the question or my point.
Posted by: mpurinTexas supports Rick Perry, bitch at July 22, 2011 10:49 AM (OonVm)
I was getting the impression that you thought they shouldn't be allowed to run credit reports. That's why I mentioned the gov. Wasn't trying to be snide.
I don't have a problem with employers factoring a credit report into their hiring decision. Whether they do it before the interview or after, I don't really see the difference. Wouldn't you rather not waste your time with the interview process, etc., if your credit was going to prevent you from getting the job anyway?

Maybe, if I wanted to hire you enough. If I didn't, oh well, you're the one looking for a job.

Thanks to both of you. I barely remember TLM as a kid. But I remember feeling in the presence of God hearing it.
Vatican II came around and being from metro Boston in the late 60s-early 70s, my parish just HAD to go whole hog. Folk mass, guitars, drums, dance. Complete liturgical BS. It is exactly the point where I lost the sense of awe walking into the Church.
I hung in there through the teens but fell away. Even going to a Catholic college in an attempt to reawaken that feeling didn't help. I finally came home, and I am very happy to to see Benedict's re-emphasis on TLM these days.

I'd rather not hand out my SSN to anyone who asks for it. After an offer is made, sure. But just to be considered for interview? No.
And I'm still on the fence as to whether or not a credit report should be a requirement for employment. Back ground checks, drug test and references should be sufficient, IMO.

I don't think the guy or gal working the counter at the CVS is worth running a credit check on. I'm kinda surprised an employer would shoulder that expense.

I think you misunderstand the Church's theology on Marian devotion. I spent a lot of time going over the theology of all this before landing home again. I obviously don't see it the way you do, because I came back.
If you're interested, hit me up at the link, I'll send you my reading list. Maybe you'll come around to see it as I do. Maybe not, but I certainly hope you find what you're looking for.

Is that really HER?
She really HAS given up on a WH run, hasn't she?
Coolczech- as Sean and I were discussing, she's apparently decided to adopt the "Ben Franklin chic" look.

This I can agree with.
Two things prompted my original question. First, I've run into several applications requiring a SSN and credit check just to be considered for an interview. Second, recent reports are finding that employers won't consider someone who has been unemployed for an extended length of time. So, if you've been unemployed for awhile, your credit has probably taken a hit. How are you supposed to get a decent job if you won't be considered because of unemployment and, if you are, you won't be offered the job because of your credit?
