It's morning in America, somewhere
Perhaps the sun will shine
But there's tears and sadness at the MBM

You know at the height of the Clinton lying machine the press recognized he was a liar and made niggling little comments about it. No so with this lying asshole.

Gee who would-a-thunk it. Pass more laws get more crime
And this law they are talking about here I personally knew someone who ran afoul of this. He was picking up stuff while hiking through a national park in KY. It is a damn felony, not just simple little shit.

Ah, new threads always have a nice bacon-y smell.
Of course, eventually, it turns to a dusty hobo scent, but we can enjoy it for a little while.

At least according to MSNBC, Boner will be going, hat in hand, to the White House this morning. Who knows what "grand bargain" they'll come up with?
Most of the Repubs in D.C. are whining p*ssies. Osama Obama will win, now and in '12, and the country will continue its slide into the toilet.
As "Poppin' Fresh" would say, "in fairness...." My question: "in fairness" to who? This regime has peculiar ideas of "fairness." Oh, to be a Muzzie, an America-hater or a member of a protected minority!

“Fifty six (miles-per-gallon) is a sweet spot that is both achievable, reasonable, highly beneficial in terms of as economic standpoint, and will meet the president’s goals of dramatically reducing our dependence on foreign oil,” (Jack) Gillis told Fox News. - from the "56 mpg CAFE Standard!"
Under what interpretation of the 3 Laws of Thermodynamics does this jackwagon operate under? a "56 mpg CAFE Standard" would mean
1) smaller, lighter cars - suprisingly unpopular with many people
2) high technology - read very expensive - hybrid systems (batteries, supercapacitor regen, high performance turbo diesels or ICE)
3) An overall decline in sales of new cars - people will hold onto their older cars longer. In fact, I'd bet that a "56 mpg CAFE standard" will spur a whole new business of doing major rebuilds of older cars. And that will probably spur the government to mandate the removal of cars of a certain age from the road. Fascism Marches On!!

Here the Boston Globe knows who is responsible for the collapse of the debt talks:
"Barack Obama took office vowing to usher in a post-partisan era that would drain the toxic anger of the Bush years and focus the country on practical, long-overdue reforms. Like Bush, he was no doubt sincere in wanting to unite the country. Unlike Bush, he has governed in a manner largely consistent with that ideal. A lot of good it's done him: Washington is more poisonous than ever. And as Congress courts disaster by threatening to default on the national debt, Obama must marvel at his plight. Practically a caricature of Spock-like rationality and sober caution, he's presiding over a capital that has become completely unhinged."
The god damn post-partisans just won't recognize Obama's "Spock-like rationality and sober caution." If the post partisans just gave Obama all of the free money he wants, this debt crisis would be over.

Got some good news on a possible job late yesterday. Hope to get called for an interview next week. I feel like I am running out of time to get employed before the bottom drops out of this economy completely.

#51 I am totally not believing anything reported by any MSM outlet on these supposed "deals." It's obvious they are all carrying water for the White House and think nothing of outright lying if it will help their boyfriend look good.
This whole game has been all about splitting the GOP and demoralizing the Tea Party. Reporting so-called deals that involve huge tax increases or dangle things like repeals of the individual mandate or other parts of ObamaCare are explicitly designed to get us riled up and bitching at Boehner.
They are trying their best to manipulate us and divide us. It's the only chance Obama has to get reelected, and if they fail, he is done and so are they.

There have been quite a few entertaining stories about idiots who took a vacation to get gay-married in MA later being refused divorces by the states where they actually reside. Apparently MA will marry anyone who drops in for a few days, but won't hear divorce petitions from non-residents.
No-fault divorce and "starter marriages" are so culturally acceptable--shit, they're practically the only rite of passage to adulthood we have left, I am so sick of people insisting I'm a child because all my relationships have ended before we needed lawyers to divide my assets--people don't think through "getting married" except in terms of romance and "free" health insurance from employers.

I agree. The details to be considered with some degree of certainty (IMO) are those related by named GOP sources. Most everything else last night and early this morning is about calling Boehner some hardliner who is unwilling to accept a good deal because he takes his orders from the Tea Party. It's a line (well, several) borrowed from Obama's screed yesterday evening.

Kelly, I'm not suggesting the Tea Party is demoralized, I am suggesting that the White House is coordinating with the MBM in an all-out effort to demoralize us and split the Republican Party. They know the Tea Party people are suspicious of Boehner and downright hostile to Mitch McConnell; so what do they do? Continue to pump up McConnell's plan and undermine Boehner by floating all these "deals" he is supposedly working on behind the backs of the Tea Party freshmen. It's so damned obvious what they are doing.
Shame on us if it works. I'm with '80sBaby, we HAVE to rely ONLY on named sources in these reports, and not assume Boehner is lying. That is exactly what the White House and the media want us to believe.

Unfathomably depressing news from Norway. God bless the victims and their families.
FWIW, Jawa has had the best updates that I've found. I still think it's odd that the guy's FB and Twitter feeds were both new and meticulously (according to Jawa) put together, but with very little history. It sounds as if both were done for effect. IIRC Jawa said he had had an older FB page which was taken down some time back and replaced by the new one about a week before the attacks. Someone - maybe just him or maybe a group - was trying to make a very specific point by including the things they included, such as his (supposed - sorry, but someone who does this shit isn't really a Christian) religion and membership in the Masons.
At home, I hope Boehner hangs tough.

One other thing was that back then they didn't have a shitton of anti-smog equipment on the engine bogging it down.
If you wanted to drive a tiny vehicle with a 50 hp engine you can get good gas mileage now. The problem is that nobody wants to drive tiny vehicle with a 50 hp engine.

There's just something screwy about the timing. The Norwegians finally, as I understand it, do something about their domestic terror cell, and that's when this dude decides to attack? Really weird.
I think it's most likely he was just a hateful person, because his plan seems designed to maximize his chance to take out as many of these politicians' kids in a very personal way -- it's almost like the bombings were secondary.

Below is a list of all the new vehicles that, according to the EPA, cross the magical 50 mpg barrier:
2011 Nissan Leaf; MSRP $32,780
end list
Ah, but many motorcycles (organ donors) get well over 50 mpg. Just keep your mouth closed while riding.

Back when all this emission crap started, I thought it would be a great idea to have a regulation free design option, that is any engine with a displacement of less than 1.0 ℓ would have no emission regulations. I think the creativity allowed by this would have lead to some very interested high performance high mileage designs.

Amd frankly, Smartcars do not get THAT great a mileage. They were originally intended as little commuter cars for big European cities that have minimal parking.
There are some nice (little) cars out there that get very good mileage:
Austin Mini-cooper
VW Geo 1.5 TD
But the CAFE standards apply to a Fleet average. The AVERAGE of a car maker's fleet of manufactured cars would have to be 56 mpg. Some lower, some higher, but that is ridiculous. I wouldn't mind owning a little car/high mileage to commute in, but for a long roadtrip, or a family with kids, that's ridiculous.
The "thermodynamics" aspect is well explained by the anecdotes people have made about little cars in the '70's that got "great mileage". Computer engine management, hybrids, etc. can improve performance and mileage at the margins, but the basic efficiency of burning liquid fuel with air in a combustion chamber is only going to yield so much energy that can be converted to motion (kinetic energy) through a crank gear and transmission to a drive shaft and road wheels.
Battery powered cars are, I think, a false hope. Any battery that can actually store very high energy levels (high electrical density) would itself become pretty unstable. Small flaws in the designs of newer lithium batteries have caused them to be fire hazards at times (eg, computer laptop batteries). Just imagine what a really big battery (to drive a car) would be like if they were occasionally flawed and decayed or discharge dramatically.

However, more efficient doesn't necessarily convert to "cheaper". Right now the fact is that gasoline has much more energy per gal than other available fuels and given equal design features will get the best miles per gallon of use.
Posted by: Vic at July 23, 2011 07:14 AM (M9Ie6)
Also, early hi-milers used leaded fuel: 100% gasoline, leaded fuel you could run an airplane engine on. You're now burning 10%[+] alcohol, in a lower compression head. Not a recipe for efficiency, I don't care what the snot-nosed brats on AutoGreen say.

I gots a solid B+ in high school physics, I'll give 'er a whack. First, what is the difference in mass between as 1973 CVCC and a 2011 Civic? Then, what's the difference in the coefficient of drag between the two models?
Then there's this. In 1973, the Honda Civic was introduced as a 2-door coupe and a 3-door hatchback with a 70 cubic inch (1170 cc) engine that produced 50 hp, got 40 mpg, sported 12-inch wheels, was 140 inches in overall length and weighed about 1,500 pounds. Power front disc brakes, manual transmission, AM radio, vinyl seats, and reclining bucket seats all came as standard equipment. Optional equipment included air conditioning, automatic transmission, radial tires, and a rear wiper on the hatchback. The Civic's slogan was, "It'll get you where you're going."
In the following decades, the Civic got longer, wider, heavier, more powerful, and more plushly trimmed out w/power everything.
Long answer short: they ain't the same car. Ain't it great that Honda engineers were able to keep the Civic's high mpg while transforming it from Karen Carpenter thin to Meggie Mac plush?

Of course, The Ol' Lady's 2011 Camry SE prolly outweighs the early Civics by several hundred pounds... but I'm not expecting it to get 50 MPG, cause we both have a heavy foot and that 4-banger bitch will get you from 0 to "Take Me To Jail" fast with the quickness.
I took it out on I-55 and I didn't floor it, but steady, heavy mashin' on it got me into Trip-Digits in under 0.5 mile.. I was runnin' 112 MPH before I had to get outta it for traffic, but She didn't show no signs of quitting. And she corners like a roller coaster.
It's rated for 35(?) MPG, but my size 13 and it's response and handling cut that down at least by half...

That group which cheers a given murder might not matter in all cases. What matters most is what spurred the murderer in the first place; what made him think he was doing the right thing. Those cheering him after the fact only matter in this case if they kept cheering him; they only matter when they make him a saint.
Ansar al-Islam are assholes, and they've proven themselves a criminal organisation just for making clear that they would make saints of similar vermin who happened to be Muslim. But in this case, they're a sideshow.

That wasn't really my point. My point was that this administration is looking for any excuse to shut down dissent (see: Fox News), so this site - but more particularly the dedicated anti-Jihadist sites, will certainly be targeted by DoJ etc under the guise of concern.

Maybe. I'll believe the whole 'fundamental Christian' thing when we hear about the church he went to kicking him out of it. The shiny-bright Facebook pages and some other things about the reporting on this guy make me wait for some real info, not gushy wishcasting gotcha! crap from the New York Times.

You do know this is a Woody Allen joke, right? It's from his early days as a stand-up comic.

"Tot Macht Frei" oder "Frei Macht Tot"
Nordic Labor Party Camp Motto
I noted on the overnight that the Prime Minister's message reeks to high heaven of Neo-Primitivism, the willing sacrifice of their own children in order to advance a perverted agenda.
Witnesses initially reported that the shots were coming from everywhere, not from a lone gunman.
A point worth remembering was posted by De' Debil Hisself at July 23, 2011 08:22 AM:
I smell bullshit.
Someone firing an automatic weapon in open ground at moving targets would need to expend a lot of ammo for every hit.
For example the Ft Hood Shootings. Shooter = Military trained with dozens of hours of practice with his weapon. Victims= Trapped in a building. All shots at nearly point blank range. Hasan fired 200+ rounds and Killed 30 people. There were 13 wounded.
A hit does not equal a fatal wound. 10-25% would be fatal wounds. That would mean there are 240-600 wounded. He would have needed to expend 3000+ plus rounds if he were the proÂ’s pro of shooting. ThatÂ’s three cases of ammunition. ThatÂ’s hundreds of magazines. Did this guy who hitched a ride on a skiff have that? Well the answer is no.
This is a set-up and done by multiple agents. Homeland Security has been hyping to law enforcement that Al Qaeda is now white right wingers for over three years! Now this happens.
