Under the SPOT program, [given 2-week "training"] TSA screeners interrogate individuals only after they have been identified as suspicious. Now, at least at Logan, everyone is a target. After 60 days, the TSA will decide whether to expand the program to other airports. Paul Ekman, professor emeritus at UC San Francisco, who helped develop the SPOT program, said his research indicated that talking to passengers "loosens things up," increasing the chances that they will show signs that they're concealing something. The subject matter of the discussion is irrelevant; all that matters is that the passenger is speaking.
What could possibly go wrong? Years ago, when returning stateside, Michael Yon (?) was arrested for refusing to provide his bank accounts and passwords. Imagine today being quizzed on your purpose for travel, if your flight lands anywhere near a Tea Party rally for instance, whether or not you're interested or aware, what a numbskull TSA response will be.

You will note that unlike Hillary Clinton, or Laura Bush, or Nancy Reagan, we have heard NOTHING about how those rooms have been decorated. My hunch is that there are horrible travesties of taste and the shelter magazines are not running articles because they know the public would go nuts.
I sure wonder what VooDoo Granny has done to her bedroom, though.

Well said. This is what comes of letting the enemy make the rules for your own forces. The muz can murder with impunity and blow up mosques without a shred of public outcry in their own vile lands. Yet we let them tell us how WE must show restraint. My question to them is - or else what? What else are they going to do? Those with the balls to live up to their shit religion are already fighting or plotting. The rest are do-nothing cowards.
This is what a nation looks like when the f--king do-gooders take over policy. It's the bleeding heart pukes, on both right and left, are killing us with kindness. Their determination to ignore the truth about other cultures and the vast gulf between our world views has given birth to the most absurd decisions possible.
In the same way they have gutted the manly virtue in our own society with their limp wristed obsession with being "nice."
Of all the world's petty tyrants, I hate the do-gooders the most. At least a despot, honest in his brutality, will at some level be content to allow a complaint and obedient populace to live in peace under his boot heel.

The Ismaili (Shia offshoot) and Rick Perry are tied to the UT/Austin hip.
Tax dollars funding UT not only are directed towards university student programs, but the formation of secondary education PC curriculum for US high school students, designed by the "divine" Aga Khan whose purpose is proselytizing the Ismaili religion of peace. And perhaps the Ismaili are what they project themselves to be, all about charity. And perhaps Pakistan is an ally of the US, or at least Rick Perry thinks so. Will Rick Perry adamantly campaign that he'd have no qualms invading Pakistan's sovereignty, or will his supporters fail to inquire?
Perry also brokered a 2008 partnership between the University of Texas and Aga Khan University in Pakistan to expand cooperation on programs including the Muslim Histories and Culture Project, which trains high school teachers on Muslim history and culture curricula. "I have supported this program from the very beginning, because we must bridge the gap of understanding between East and West if we ever hope to experience a future of peace and prosperity," Perry said at the signing ceremony.

My mom recently was cleaning out a bunch of stuff in the attic and found her journal from her years after college. In it she has pages about what a mistake her best childhood friend was making by "marrying an idiot" and she assumed it wouldn't last. We all had a good laugh, she shared it with all of us the morning after the party their 6 kids threw for them on the occasion of their 35 anniversary.
My great grandmother always says this expression in Italian. She says the english translation doesn't cut it but it goes something like "you can't even think of putting even a finger between a husband and a wife".

It's bad taste to do it during the reception. Wait until after the wedding, set it up kinda like a Fantasy Football leauge.
This hits a nerve, as my own BFF is getting a divorce from his cheating whore of a soon-to-be-ex-wife, after 6 years (I guess the 7-year itch thing is true). NOBODY saw that one coming, not even me with my distrust of such things.

Money. They fundamentally disagree about how to handle money. That will utterly destroy them. They've been together for, heavens, has to be going on ten years now and if they haven't worked it out by now, they won't. Money issues will rip even the best relationship to shreds. There's also the fact that Boy BFF is, seriously, a jerk and he and I have had some lovely screaming fights about how he treats her. He's the type that will make "jokes" about her in public and he doesn't get why that's so horrible. The soon to be wife is a fantastic person and he won't do better than her. But. She doesn't trust him and that right there is a huge, huge issue as well. She knew him in college when he was sleeping with any girl who would have him and she can't get it out of her head that he's still like that. Considering that he's been utterly faithful to her for the better part of a decade, well, she's setting up a self-fulfilling prophecy at this point. He's starting to take the opinion that if he's going to do the time, he might as well do the crime. That is also Not Good. Oh and he hates her family (with v v good reason) but that's a loser right there.
I truly, truly hope that I am wrong but considering the fact that he's threatened to call it off three times over the last week, I don't think so. I have let him know that if he bails after they have kids I will drag him back by his balls.
Gah. Well. At least the wedding and reception are going to be really really pretty! Shut up, other people's weddings are my one huge girly pleasure.

I guess they forgot that Democrats had historic margins in Congress and a Democrat President to pass anything they wanted. They chose the Stimulus and Obamcare over jobs. Plus whatever other feckless nonsense they passed. Nothing really comes to mind on jobs.
Here the quote;
"The Congressional Black Caucus decided to take matters into their own hands," said Gunaratna. "They are tired of Republicans' inaction that prevents bills from moving forward. This is a real tangible opportunity for our constituents."
Really? Do you think people are that ignorant or just plain dumb? Shithead.

The MFM started calling the PHX dust storms by the Arabic for sand storms, pretending that Arizonans "commonly call them haboobs". Revisionist conversion even skipped the Spanish. No matter that dust (dry, loose soil) is not sand. There's a huge difference between the Sonoran and Mohave Deserts, as if the Joshua Tree is the same as the Saguaro, and native plants need to be renamed in "commonly known" Arabic. These idiots saw sand dunes outside Vegas and transfer that visualization to the entire Southwest.

The Aga Kahn is actually pretty well respected among westerners, and the Ismailis (aside: shouldn't it be "Ishmaelites?" But then I think "Israeli" should be "Israelite," so what do I know?) are about the ultimate in "moderate" Islam. Still evil? Quite possibly, but at least no one from the Ismaili sect has tried to blow us up. Given that we're never actually going to get rid of all the Muslims, doesn't it make sense to have good relations with the one group that isn't all gung-ho about killing us?
Further, the UT system (UT Austin, UTA, a few others) is a university system, and "Muslim History and Culture" are certainly legitimate things for college kids, who are so interested, to learn.
Given that no High School in Texas is required to teach anything about Muslims one way or the other, and the few that do teach those things are either: a) religious schools (and therefore not actually governed by the State), or b) high schools in which such classes are electives, I'm not too worried about that, either.
Texas is larger than most European countries (actually, it may be bigger than any European country, but I'm not sure about that), and it has one of the world's top 10 economies (IIRC). We're not going to be able to get away without having relationships with foreign countries or foreign entities.

5 years ago my bff married a guy who not only is an incredible jerk but is also ghey. He buries his gheyness in being overly religious. Sound good yet? Although he's the one with the advanced degrees and, at the time, had the better job, he had spent so profligately that she paid for the wedding, rehersal dinner, his student loans and his car loan from the sale of the condo she had renovated herself. Fast forward, he has a far crappier job in the boondocks and she's working nights and raising two kids in the daytime from a house he wanted at the peak of the market that they can't get out from under.

It's about $8 apiece. That's $24 that I honestly can't afford right now. And best of all, I'd have to use my credit card to do the ordering. The credit card I'm trying NOT to use so that I can improve my credit scores.
*headdesk*
Thank goodness it's Friday.
PS - Obama is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

Been there, did that. I was maid of honor for my college roommate's wedding and, as I put her veil on her, said "You know he's gay, right?" They were both in epic, epic denial about it. Cut to two years later, the inevitable occurs, he calls me up for sympathy and I was all "Yeah. Totally on her side, pay up, bastard."

However Doom never rests.
Now let's set the table on some of the other things going on. The Philly Fed number yesterday was horrifyingly bad. There's an old economic model out there, which has a high correlation, that strongly implies that we should print a non-farm payroll number of close to -750,000 this coming month!

Second guess? They don't want all the teams doing that. They'd probably okay a sleeve patch or something that all the teams could wear. The NFL does that from time to time.

Super catholic virginal lawyer employee of my husband is sending out the wedding invitations this week. I met him, knew within 30 seconds he was ghey, and then find out he's divorced. When they got his annulment papers to his ex the exwife says, "he's ghey". The chick is STILL marrying him. I think it was the first guy she found that didn't want to have sex "before" marriage. I'd love to sit her down and explain a few things about men but apparently she's made it to age 30 with her fingers in her ears, her eyes averted and singing la la la la. Okay, is everyone here familiar with the mini Twitter feud that happened Tuesday night between R&B singer/woman-beater Chris Brown and Andy Levy of Red Eye? If you aren't, you can read a summary of it at Mediaite. Then once you've done that, watch Levy's "apology" to Brown and his (idiot dumbcluck) fans, also at Mediaite. It is, naturally, hilarious, and has brightened my Friday considerably.
Frankly, given that Chris Brown has also just been cast - apparently without irony - in a romantic g-ddamn comedy (much to Anderson Cooper's chagrine), I think there's no better time to remind the world that he's a sophomoric loser who throws temper tantrums and beats women.
Why didn't Red Eye replace Glenn Beck's show again? It's got 100% less Bob Beckel, and I would appreciate the irony of 5pm being considered "red eye" time. *grumble*

I teased Bevel Lemelisk blanket reiteration that he'll only vote for a potus candidate who will invade and attack Pakista with our Military, a candidate who has determined Pakistanis are absolute and complete enemies of the USA, blah blah blah.
In response to your comment, of the 12 websites I visited looking into the sect and its history, none mentioned Ishmael. Mohammed lived eras after Ishmael, and the Shia (the purists don't accept this sect as Muslim) believe in following the hereditary progeny of Mohammed rather than the "path" of the Sunni. And the only drawback readily discernible to the sect is their sworn allegiance to their Khan. So long as he's a man of peace, great. After his passing, however, no telling who takes his place.
Regarding relations with Muslims, my sentiments, as well. Morals aside, it's completely illogical for Americans or anyone to presume the promotion of Muslim genocide, or the blanket "virtue" of interventionist kinetic military actions, aka wars with no end, which ignore all tradition and concept of national sovereignty.
However, you're wrong to dismiss the curriculum developmental process in TX. This is an example of how educational material is researched and promoted before the State Ed. Board gets involved and texts are purchased. There's also the federal involvement, GWB No Child Left Behind illustrates what gets taught in the public education system by political decision/vote. Black Heritage month is another example of material with an agenda that is an integral part of public education. Muslim Appreciation is getting developed. Who's surprised?

The trees are a really big feature of our property's appeal, so we've already had an arborist come out and trim, feed, and treat them for pests. You might want to check with your county extension first adn see if you can get a free evaluation, but at the least you can get a list of certified arborists to hire. Definitely get a couple of quotes because they will vary wildly.
We can be talking serious bucks to have it done correctly, but it's worth it for both your trees and your house. If you've got big trees, you'll need the trimming done every ~3 years.

See, this is the thing, Paul Ryan has admitted (in a good way, actually) that he has focused pretty well solely on the Budget. It's not that he doesn't pay attention to other things, but he doesn't really study them or do really deep analysis on them.
That makes him supremely qualified to fight our budget battles. It does not make him qualified to be President of the United States. It's the same with The 'Stache: yes, he'd be great on national security/foreign policy, but I've never seen anything from him that makes me comfortable that he'd be anywhere near as good on domestic/budgetary policy.

Yes, I know Mohammed (the original SCOAMF) was born long after Ishmael. As I understand it, though, he claimed that Ishmael was the actual promised son of Abraham, and that this sect takes their name from that. Just my understanding.
As far as the Aga Kahn being peaceful... the previous several have been, and it seems to be what the sect teaches, so I'm okay with them, in general. I take the Reagan stance on that, of course: Trust, but verify. Watch them like a hawk, but, so far, we don't have any specific reason to distrust them.
I also understand we have to watch the state board of education like a hawk, here in Texas, but that's always true. It does help that we have the Independent School District model, so, effectively, the SBoE can only "recommend" any curriculum that isn't part of the core graduation requirements. And it's pretty hard for them to change those core requirements.

They weren't to the people of Texas, apparently, since all the crap she's tossing out pre-dates the 2010 election.
The purpose of the same charges being tossed out on these threads is not to convince us, it's to get a whisper campaign going against Perry that will stick in the noggins of the less well-informed.
But the thing that infuriates me about Malkin, is she's using her bully pulpit to make serious ethics charges against Perry. He's not Tea Party enough for you? Fine, we get it. Campaign against him if you want... but who the fuck is your candidate? But to toss these wild accusations out there is risking getting Perry bounced from the governorship and that's really inexcusable. And using the fishing expedition through emails approach that the Left has used against Palin and other conservatives is nauseating.
If Perry is such a sleaze bag awful governor, why didn't Malkin start beating this drum in 2001 or 2007?

Here's the thing with Perry. Yes, there are aspects of his political record that I don't like; the HPV vaccine debacle is one of them. But I think, by and large, he is a strong, reliable, honorable candidate. Like I've mentioned before, we're never going to find a lilywhite, pure-as-the-conservative-driven-snow candidate; everyone makes mistakes.
What's important is that a candidate's flaws and past missteps are recognized, discussed, and that the candidate owns up to them and accepts responsibility. But most importantly, it's the electorate that must hold the candidate accountable, and make sure that they are vocal and visible. "See? We know you've done XYZ in the past. We expect you NOT to do it again in the future. If you do, you will be out on the curb so fast, you'll bounce."
This is the major problem I have with Romney. He refuses to acknowledge the failure that is Romneycare. Everyone can see it's a failure. Ask anyone in Massachusetts what they think, and they'll tell you it sucks. But Romney refuses to step up and say, "Yeah, it was a big mistake." Perry's done this with the HPV issue, and I respect him for that. It doesn't mean I wouldn't still be watching him with eagle eyes to make sure he doesn't do something similar while President, though. That's my job. The American people are the President's employer, IMO, and he or she has to pass muster when under review or face consequences, just like anyone else.

Czech what is funny is that the two religious items used against Perry are
1. He is pro muslim jihadist
2. He is a far right radical Bible thumping evangelical.
Those two things, they are not like the other.

I knew they'd go after Rick on education. I'm sure he knows it too. He handled the evolution question well yesterday (and that says a lot coming from me because I disagree with his position). But to really counter the charges, they need to pull out the numbers showing how well Texas does in both secondary and higher education. I'm sure the higher ed numbers are there, but he needs to assign a staffer to sift through them and make a list of five or ten bullet points.

I hear ya. I share the sense of dread. I took my evening constitutional walk last night and pondered how there's no continuity any more - nothing we can leave for the future, and everything we inherited from the past is being destroyed. The children born from here on out are in bad trouble. I'm glad I have none of my own.
If things would crash and burn catastropically at least then the survivors would take a more realistic view of life. Presumably all the damn do-gooders would die off (the greatest possible blessing). Then there would be hope to rebuild. But alas - I think that the decline will be a dreary, slow, gray affair wherein we become like Russia or East Germany.

Yup.
What's the alternative. I know the Bush wing is pushing to get any other candidate into the race at this point, but as of today we have two choices, Perry and Romney.
I like Bachmann, but she's not presidential material just yet, and she was polling well(i think) because she was the best chance to beat Romney at the time.

VAN SUSTEREN: You know, I see a lot of good, hard-working Americans who are in the Tea Party movement. And then, you know, from time to time, I see things like — you know, today — today, I wrote on Gretawire a blog about what’s going on within the Tea Party movement to Senator Orrin Hatch. I mean, he’s getting attacking by a small portion of the Tea Party movement for not being Tea Party-ish enough, and it’s — and it fundamentally goes around the balanced budget amendment, which is so — which is the mantra of the Tea Party movement.
But if you do a little research, Senator Orrin Hatch going back to 1979 in the U.S. Senate was pushing the Tea Party — a balanced budget amendment. Yet some of these people in the Tea Party movement won’t recognize it. They won’t look at the facts and they go after him. So it’s, like, even within the Tea Party movement, there is — you know, there’s a disregard for the facts and an effort to be sort of disruptive even within the — within the group.
(Transcript is from Malkin)
PALIN: Well, and you’ll find that within any venue, within any group, Greta, especially when it involves politics. But to your particular point about Senator Orrin Hatch — he is doing good in terms of trying to get a balanced budget and he has been for the last couple of decades. And he’s pushed hard for some fiscal reforms that we have got to see implemented, otherwise, you know, crony capitalism is going to continue coming out of Washington, D.C., and we’re going to continue on the wrong path and we will be bankrupt.
So people like Orrin Hatch, who now especially — he’s rising up with quite aggressive talk about the balanced budget amendment and other things that he has seen for all these years need to be done. We need to be agreeing and embracing his idea and working with him to make sure that that happens, instead of shooing him away and shooing him out of a Tea Party movement, if you will, when he agrees with such a basic fundamental principle that we must see implemented, and that’s just simply balancing the doggone federal budget!

The education crisis is one of broken families, NOT of the system per se, in my opinion.
Yeah, parents who ought to be licensed, or on a leash themselves, are a big part of the problem.
But have you talked to some public school teachers lately? Statistics say education majors have the lowest SAT scores and then the lowest GPAs once they get into college. After talking to some of these dolts, I believe it. Ignorance doesn't even begin to describe the situation. Most of them didn't even major in the subject they are teaching so, they have plenty of classes on how to teach, and then they don't know what they are teaching in any deep way.
I think the problem is more like 60-40 with 60% of the blame on the teachers.
Besides, aren't we always being told that "great" teachers overcome obstacles? Or is that just some more bullshit from the NEA?

Nothing puts the kibosh on a one-night stand like announcing that sex is off-limits. It's also a pretty serious roadblock to the establishment of a loving relationship, believes Laura Brashier, which is why she's launched 2date4love, a dating website for men and women who want to fall in love but don't want to, or can't have actual intercourse.
There are quite a few of them out there in cyberspace: since the site went live Aug. 1, 10,000 people have visited and more than 2,000 have signed up. (Those who join by Sept. 20 receive a free month of membership, which costs about $30, depending on the length of the subscription.)

Last time around I said there 3 senate races we needed to win if we were serious about reforming the GOP - Marco Rubio over Crist in FL, Pat Toomey over Arlen Specter in PA, and Rand Paul over whoever McConnel was running in KY.
This time around, I see 2 top level pickups that must be won. Oren Hatch in Utah and Dick Lugar in IN. (Snowe in ME I think is too long of a shot but good luck).
Keep it up and little by little we just may build a majority.
Time for 2 more Republican seats to turn into actual conservative republican votes. These are two races we need to stay on top of and support the strongest challenger that comes along.

You declared America's right to invade a sovereign country in order to assassinate, that our Military had the right to attack Pakistan and execute its citizens on the pretense of killing a dead horse and being certain to leave no witnesses, which btw goes contrary to a Reagan Executive Order against raids to assassinate/execute (if Reagan is your model). I don't care which, but ask yourself which official version from the White House of that raid that you believe.
Unlike you, while studying ALL of the candidates, I'm actually researching diverse sources in order to come to the most logical conclusion. Logic today is too rare a commodity, most people never having actually cultivated sensibilities that willingly view as many perspectives as possible in search of understanding to be used in order to become knowledge. You say that Ron Paul is my man, though my jury is still out. I was introduced to Ron Paul here at Ace's site, and wondered what the hate was all about, finding the spite unfounded upon further research. I supported Fred! in '08. When commenters complained that I'd end posts with "Fred!" I accommodated politely. Their antagonism was strictly based on the fervor for "electable" Mittens "fire in the belly" rant and their ageist prejudice. Platform and agenda amounted to squat in arguments. But so far as I'm concerned, build the platform and vote the candidate whose record best reflects that agenda. For me, constitutional governance is the entire point, all officials limited in powers and held accountable to function responsibly to fulfill their constitutional duties. As for the economy, Ron Paul's been right all along and everyone else is frantically borrowing his platform planks. That FOX polled the public after the last GOP debate, Ron Paul won handily, and the entire poll "disappeared" shows the establishment's fear that he's "really actually" ahead, and an illogical paranoia from the public trained to heel to "conventional wisdom" that is anything but factual. There is nothing new given American revisionism as our modern cultural perspective. At least I've been around long enough to know better than to just go along to get along and actually believe official government policies are for my benefit, public safety, or for national security. Sure, Rick Perry's record shows that he'll talk whatever talk he figures that people want to hear, with swagger, while he plays another corporatist puppet head; and tough toenails if you're in the way. Adios, Mofo.

The Dude (slouching in leather chair, across from desk) "Employed?"
Jeffrey Lebowski : "You don't go out looking for a job dressed like that? On a week day?"
The Dude: "Is this a........what day is this?"

Yup. That's why he'll never be President.
And, have you ever noticed that when Paul-bots come here they make the same arguments that Marxists do?

That FOX polled the public after the last GOP debate, Ron Paul won handily, and the entire poll "disappeared" shows the establishment's fear that he's "really actually" ahead, and an illogical paranoia from the public trained to heel to "conventional wisdom" that is anything but factual.
It's true that the establishment fears Paul's support and how strongly it shows up.
It may be true that his support is significantly understated because of this.
It is true that the 'conventional wisdom' is anything but factual.
However, Paul is not really actaully ahead, nor will he win. No chance in hell.
Paul is too damn far out there. Even in a libertarian year he is not only ridiculously uncompromising to point of kookishness, he's pretty extreme and out there banging the drum on a lot of anachronistic issues and issues that split even libertarians.
And he's got that 'world view' issue going, where he speaks of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons as if it were their moral right, and America as if everything Code Pink said about it was true.
Not gonna happen dude. I am no neocon warmonger, they'd call me an isolationist... but Ron Paul is total anathema not only to the bonafide neocon warmongers but to every goddamn moderate hawk in the party.
If you're willing to compromise somewhat I think we can get a Republican candidate with a strong libertarian bend, the party does seem to be moving in that direction. But Paul is too die-hard anyone-but opposed by too many factions within the party to ever hope of uniting them behind him. Sarah Palin is less divisive than that guy.
The difference being that while 40-60% of Republicans would sooner cut their Johnson off than vote for either of them, the core of Sarah's support at least lies within the remainder of the Republican party... Pauls lies a goodly bit outside of it.

Reminds me of my nephew when he was a senior in high school. He went out with a buddy one Saturday night and of course they were drinking and he was stupid enough to drive. Cop stopped him and decided to see if he had responsible parents before wrecking his driving record and college chances. I got the call because his parents were away over night, went and got him, took the buddy home and poked said nephew when he tried to go to sleep on the ride home. He asks me if I'm going to tell his parents. No, says I, you are. Yeah, that woke him right up. Made him do it, too. Ten minutes after the parents got home that kid was washing cars, mowing the lawn and doing every other job his father could think of. That evening his parents and I retrieved the car and went to dinner while the kid was doing laundry - his mom set him to work on her chore list after dad got done with him. He turned out to be a responsible adult, runs a Green Turtle restaurant now and bought himself a house a few years back.

Maverick Muse,
I can sympathize with you. I like most if not all of Ron Paul's domestic policies, but he wants to turn back international relations to the 1800s, back before we were a great power let alone a super power.
Deep in my heart, I wish we could live in a world where we weren't the world police, but the cat's out of the bag and not going back in.
Simply leaving other nations alone doesn't work. History is filled with examples of it. It doesn't work in a word where technology is so advanced that even shit nations can cause massive damage to other nations well beyond their borders.
And if we pull back and :"leave everyone alone", what happens? Will Peace just reign?
What happens in a major city when the police go on strike? Violence, looting, and murder.
What will happen in every region when the dominate power leaves? Will there simply be a power vacuum in which regional powers don't violently compete for domination?
What happens in the South China sea when we leave? What happens in the middle east when we leave? What happens in north africa when we leave?
I think there is a happy medium between Paul's non interventionist position and say John McCain and Joe Liebermann's intervention always position.
I think we should determine the value of certain nations and regions in terms of interest to our country. We should stay in the places we think are vital to our security(oil producing nations and vital sea lanes) and leave those that can take care of themselves(Europe, South America)

Because he has to get back into money raising mode, and if he lost again, that's a two time expensive spanking. And if we wins, he is likely to be in a minority. It would be interesting to see if he would regain senority, or whether they would kick him down the food chain. If that was uncertain that would be another very big reason not to run.

She frequently points out similar things (she's working with special needs students this year).

I love President Obama, want to have his Baby and he can come in my mouth everyday: Several dozen families lined the motorcade route from the airport to Blue Heron Farm to cheer and wave to the prez, who traveled to the island with golf buddy Marvin Nicholson and first dog Bo last night. In front of Alley’s General Store in Chilmark more than 100 well-wishers waited more than an hour hoping for a glimpse of the commander in chief. “It’s very exciting,” said Alessandro Decio of Milan, Italy, who was waving to the prez along with his wife and kids Maria, 10, Pietro, 13, and Eugenio, 15. Alessandro, who was wearing an Obama “hope” T-shirt, said the fam, who are on a three-week U.S. vacation, are big fans. “What can I say,” added his wife. “Our point of comparison is (scandal plagued Italian P.M. Silvio) Berlusconi!” Fellow supporter Marwan Elmasri of Groton, Mass., said he wasn’t buying partisan criticism that the prez should have canceled his summer hols in deference to the economy. “Why in the world shouldn’t he take a vacation?” said Marwan Elmasari. “We’re all on vacation!”

I agree with that.
I am not of the opinion that there are no good teachers. I have a family full of teachers and, no, not all of them are good. There are 4 in the family, one knows his shit. The rest were ed majors because that was where the easy As are.
Let's face it, you end up with more courses in pedagogy in your undergrad (and more in your Masters) than you get in your actual subject matter.
Example, the one good teacher in the family was an Ed major, concentration in English. Last year he was moved from teaching 2d grade, to teaching 6th grade American history. No, he had only one survey history course in college. I asked him if that was very common, he looked at me like I had 3 heads. "Yeah, we're teachers, we teach whatever needs to be taught."
Because this is the good teacher in the family, I would catch him up at 1 am pretty routinely making sure he was wired tight for the next day's lessson plan. That does not happen all the time and everywhere.

In Texas (don't know about other states) we have "Alternative Certification" which basically means if you have a bachelor's degree in something else (provided you meet some other requirements as well) you can go through a certification program, instead of getting an actual Ed degree. It's how both my mom and my brother got their teaching certifications.
IMO, the best teachers come out of alt cert programs, since they had to at least pass something with real standards instead of just an education major.

Your experience sounds all too much like my friend who also taught in NC. If she weren't a raving liberal who would never come to this site even if her life depended on it, I'd wonder if you were her.
The state of education in this country is the same as everything else: upside down, inside out, and ass backward. Instead of ensuring an environment in which children can learn and teachers can teach and bad seeds are handled appropriately, it's turned into a morass of regulations that protect even the most vile student behavior, trim teacher discretion to the point of being useless, and ruin the school experience of every child who might actually enjoy -- or at least tolerate -- school if they had a halfway decent environment.
I went to quite a small high school that had the misfortune to be dubbed one of the best schools in NH shortly before I got there. I remember being so glad that I was graduating when I did because the freshman class the year I graduated were such filthy, vile thugs, and the teachers and administrators seemed powerless to curb their behavior. And that was fifteen years ago! I can only imagine how much worse it must be now.

Not every teacher goes through alternative certification. It's just one option. But, IMO, it's a better option than having education degrees in the first place.
The coolest thing about the one my mom and bro used is that it's over two summers, and, in between, you actually work a year as a teacher with a provisional certification (you have to have a sponsor school to get into the program). That way, if you truly suck at teaching, the school can find out fast and withdraw your sponsorship- which means you wouldn't be able to finish the program, which means they wouldn't have to allow someone who sucks to become a teacher.
I'm not sure how well that works in practice ("harassment" suits, etc.), but the theory is sound.

We were running late the other day when it was that hot, so I didn't want to take the time to get the car out of the garage and instead took the van that had been baking in the drivway.
The steering wheel hurt like hell.
Bad decision on my part.

That child-tormenting heckler who said "Ask him (Rick Perry) why he doesn't believe in science?" was annoying. You aren't supposed to "believe in" science. The scientific method perhaps, but like "the science is settled" it's a very anti-scientfic worldview to merely believe in what scientists say.
Though it's tempting in our alligator-snouted-chicken* world to say we are very close to definitive answers of major scientific questions, history suggests given some time everything we know today will be proven wrong or significantly updated. Put another way, settled science is pretty much always wrong to some degree.
You'd think something seemingly simple like gravity would be settled, but it's one of the biggest mysteries, especially at the quantum level.
*yesterday's science news which will certainly end well and not lead to any problems when the tech is in the wrong hands (/sarc)

But it's a dry heat, Houston excepted.
----
I almost took at job in Tempe (Phoenix) at ASU a decade or so ago. I had to go there several times for the interview and then to check out some equipment. First trips were in the early spring when it was so lovely -- citrus trees and bright desert flowers blooming, great temp and sunshine.
The last trip was in the end of May, I think. It was "scary hot." I foolishly walked ten minutes around lunch time without a hat and almost died.
Houston's weather is extremely oppressive, but my experience there was that it normally didn't feel like you'd die there. A lot of adjusting to Houston was walking slowly and taking your time. Also, plenty of beer and margaritas. But no amount of beer can fix Arizona heat.

But it's a dry heat, Houston excepted.
In Del Rio the old timers would complain about how it was much more humid "since they put the lake in." (i.e., build a dam on the Rio Grande and made a reservoir)
Here in Louisiana, it has been a pretty dry heat this summer. 20-30% humidity, that is, not the single digits my mom was dealing with in West Texas.

Once you get below 10%, measurement results are "iffy", unless you've spent a lot of money on the sensor. A typical weatherstation is basically spitting out a scientific wild ass guess below that level.
Humidity sensors are spec'd at 50% RH (and they're also temperature sensitive, so you have to compensate readings).

Ah yes. Dry heat vs. humid heat. I must admit I fare poorly in both. In NH, when we DO get heat, it tends to be of the humid variety because of our proximity to the ocean and all of our woodlands, rivers, streams, lakes, etc. In those cases I don't burst into flame so much as melt into a puddle that cooks on the sidewalk. Except that where I live there are no sidewalks, so I just kind of bubble in the gravel on the side of the road.
I went to Las Vegas last August with a couple of friends. It was a "dry heat." I could stomach it for just as long as it took to walk across the bridge that connected the Excalibur to New York, New York. That did it for me.
Oddly enough, my friend from Georgia had a hard time with the heat in LV, too, but my friend from Seattle couldn't get enough. I'm convinced she's secretly cold-blooded and thus soaks up the heat like a lizard on a rock.

I almost brought home some of the "business cards" for "escort services" that were shoved in my face on every street corner while I was there, just for nostalgia's sake. But I think my dear mother would have had a heart attack if she'd seen such things in my scrapbook.

New Mexico, no. NM is a shithole.
--Santa Fe as a town is nice, the area not so much. But I thought Taos and the surroundings and Los Alamos were both gorgeous. And I really do think the lighting is better in NM. Very artsy.
To me NM is to AZ as VT is NH (in terms of natural beauty and artistic spirit).

I think most of us are surprised by lefties who, for example, think things like the immense debt that this country and the rest of the socialist world has run up can be fixed by more spending and more debt. We are taken aback by the level of insanity that would permit anyone to actually publicly proclaim such an idiotic notion. But then some breathtakingly idiotic lefty comes out and says something like this, and it suddenly makes perfect sense.

Right now: 89 with 83%: "feels like 103." It's still nice and cool by our standards.

I was doing some electoral math over at 270 to win dot com, and out chances of winning in 2012 look very good thanks to reapportionment.
All we need to do is win the states we won in 2008 and then win back Ohio, Virgina, North Carolina, Florida Indiana and New Hampshire.
I think the first four should be easy to win back, but if we can't win back new hampshire, then any other state will do.
Simply by winning back Ohio, Virgina, Carolina and Florida, puts at use 266.
I'm becoming more and more optimistic about this next election

The FY 2009 request seeks $2.5 million to support the expenses of the Inspector General. The FY 2009
budget estimates that the BankÂ’s export credit support will total $14.0 billion in lending activity, and will
be funded entirely by receipts collected from the BankÂ’s customers. The Bank expects to collect $164
