5 News ghouls are desperately trying to make something out of the Irene non-event in FL. They're doing a story on the sea turtle eggs being uncovered by the rough surf. And mentioning the rain and wind gusts are from outer rain bands! See we ARE being affected!!!

8 Global warmening hysterics get another kick to the nuts.....from real sciencytists, even. at the CERN project (Hadron Collider)

....but note how the author has to interject his bias

Unsurprisingly, it's a politically sensitive topic, as it provides support for a "heliocentric" rather than "anthropogenic" approach to climate change: the sun plays a large role in modulating the quantity of cosmic rays reaching the upper atmosphere of the Earth.

...see it's controversial because it goes against the narrative, not the established science

Typical. Mine went out 10 years ago, a pair of pliers wedged in the relay switch fixed it. Not recommended by most HVAC repair men, or greenies.

At least yours waited until almost the end of summer. Mine's been out since the end of May. In Florida. In the summertime.

Looking at around $2K to replace the outside unit, which me and B'Gal do not have. But, on the flip side, we're so much more in tune with Gaia...

I'll admit that after 10 years it was getting to be a pain in the ass being the thermostat, and controling the AC at the breaker switch.

My gut tells me to stay put, but all the breathless hair-shirts on the Weather Channel are forecasting teh doomsday scenario. And we live 17 floors up, so for us it's all about the flying glass. I think we will tape up the windows a la London circa 1940, and get the hell out of here. Stay safe my fellow morons.

40 "Tell him that the ban on DDT was a racist plot to kill millions of black Africans!" The latest I heard from a lefty--in real life--is that there was no such thing as polio, infantile paralysis was really the effect of DDT poisoning, and the Sabin vaccine was just sugar water (which is why it tasted sweet). This was in response to my mentioning that I have voted against every school bond put on a ballot, and that I would continue to do so until Fairfax County Public Schools renames Rachel Carson Middle School. It makes no difference--these bonds pass overwhelmingly here. I initially thought he was messing with me, but I checked the web and see that ecotards are actually promoting this bullshit.

I flipped through the network channels this morning, something I NEVER do.

David "I'm weirdly colored" Gregory was busy asking the FEMA guy (who looks like a walrus) if the feds are going to be able to 'TAKE CARE OF" all the urban poor who are going to be hurt, frightened, and put at risk by this hurricane which will disproportionately hurt the POOR. He asks this while showing pictures of Katrina "victims" standing on roofs of houses.

I'm sure the meme will be that Obama left his vacation to personally carry the poor blacks of brooklyn to safety.

I dunno how many of us actively "care" but at least we don't have a homocidal drive to kill them off because there are "too many" of them.  Frankly, I think it would be quite unhealthy and a precursor for bad things if we really did care a lot about the affairs of foreigners (except when their policies effect us).  Now, in the case of Islamic lands I have no problem with banning DDT and letting the casualties mount, but it has nothing to do with some ideal population figure.  Aggressive enemy cultures should be encouraged to thin themselves out regardless.

I just got some roof damage from 60 mph winds. Sudden storm, very little warning, and then things were flying around the neighborhood almost as bad as when a tornado hit.

Corner houses really don't seem to do so well in high winds. Driving around the neighborhood, they were the ones that lost trees and fences.

Good morning, good people. Even here in North Country, Irene is making a stir. We shouldn't get much more than heavy rain and higher than normal winds, being well along the fringe of the storm. That, of course depends on the path being no different than prior disturbances.

Something that IS a concern,  the soil here (in our area) is very sandy, and already wet. We have 11 white oak trees near the house, all between 60&70 ft tall. Having one of them drop on the house is guaranteed to ruin your storm party for sure. Everything else has been seen to, but that one variable makes me awful uneasy.

I don't know about your white oaks, but just about any kind of oak that'll grow in Texas (mostly Live Oak and Red Oak) would be just fine once they were that tall (the root systems dig way down).  Now, if you're concerned about a tree-limb, that might be a different matter, of course.

108 @99 Funny story about that. Once upon a time, I saw a really big pickup or delivery (can't remember which if I ever knew), and whoever was handling the operation had semi trailers backed at odd angles to various entrances of buildings without loading docks to leave room for foot traffic to pass around them. Most of the trailers belonged to Consolidated Freight and they had CF painted on the side of them. Viewed from the third floor, the scene would have been perfect as an illustration in a slang dictionary.

114 Posted by: Mama AJ at August 26, 2011 09:15 AM (XdlcF)

Well, when you're thinking of "tree coming down" its usually an old, already diseased one, or the little ones that do.  Again, a tree limb is different, it could fall from any tree, but for the whole tree to come down, the wind has to overcome the tree's natural tendency (read: root system) to stay in the ground.

Mature trees have pretty deep and wide root systems, so it take a whole heckuvalot to knock them down.  The little ones and the very old ones are more vulnerable.

Every time we have a high wind storm in my neighborhood (the development is only about 4 years old) almost everybody has a tree come down, because the trees are still so young.

Depends on the type of pine, but you're probably right.  Though, in my experience, the problem with pines (all conifers, really) is that the limbs are so large in proportion to the trunk that it doesn't take much to make a limb come down.

A whole tree falling on your house is catastrophic, but a big enough limb can ruin your day, too.

Anyway, the NYT today (paraphrased) stated that global warming was allowing tropical hurricanes to go further north or some such. The term was thrown in to subliminally make sure the readers GOT IT. My questions, how do they tie it in with the other hurricanes in the last century.

Is there a provision in your HOA that dead trees can be removed? If so, poison the remaining pines or at least the ones that could potentially hit your house.

I'm sure it'd be easy to get permission to take down ugly dead pine trees.

I don't.  And, really, I don't care about her.  If you call your blog "Atlas Shrugs" you should be an economics blog, IMO.  I didn't like the false advertising in the first place.

Or the screeching.

Or the hysteria.

The problem is, as someone pointed out, if they say it enough, it becomes virtually impossible to get the real truth out there.  A lie (or, at least, a mis-representation) can be very, very simple.  The truth rarely is.  So if someone buys into "Rick Perry supports a Muslim Studies curriculum, so he must be pro-Muslim," it's very, very hard to get them to sit still long enough to explain what the curriculum actually is, and that it is not "pro-Muslim" in any way.

147 "Though, in my experience, the problem with pines (all conifers, really) is that the limbs are so large in proportion to the trunk that it doesn't take much to make a limb come down." In addition to the shallow roots, pines competing for sunlight get really top-heavy. We had a bad snowstorm here in NoVa early this year with lots of wet, heavy snow falling quickly and accumulating in trees. On our mostly wooded property, mature chestnut oaks and red oaks dropped a few limbs, several mature maples and ash snapped trunks, but a ridiculously tall pine growing among hardwoods tipped completely, and its root ball was disproportionately small enough to make me wonder how it ever stood in the first place. We had the same experience as you with younger hardwoods less than about four inches in diameter--they just fell over like broomsticks.

Any morons/'ette's in Wilmington, NC area? I have been trying to convince a friend who just moved to Topsail to evacuate. I think she is going to leave for inland SC today.

Anyone in the "cone" needs to remember Hurricane Charley, who changed his mind on landfall at the last minute heading for Tampa, leaving a lot of folks stranded in Port Charlotte for his arrival. He then cut across central Florida and did all sorts of damage in and around Orlando. I forced him to stay north of us with my powers, but later Frances and Jeanne came for a visit instead.

You NC and Yankee moron's and 'ettes stay safe and get the heck out if you are on the coast in the "red line" of the warning and mandatory evacuations. The irritation and hassle of leaving is minor compared to staying and freaking out even in a Cat 1. The howling wind does not allow you to sleep. The weather radio will be in constant alarm over the multiple tornado warnings. An additional special time will be if you lose power and airconditioning.

Stay safe.

This morning they said there's at least 27,000 or 28,000 structures that have an opportunity to be hit by the storm. So, we'll know by Saturday or Sunday. We had a tropical storm in 2008 that dumped 25+ inches of rain in 24 hours on this coast.

http://tinyurl.com/4y6k6ff

Anyway, we regard a tropical storm as mild snow days and normally not a big deal. In other words, an excuse to stay home, make soup and read a book. This one had you wondering if you should build an ark. Beachside there is very quick run off to the river. The mainland became a swamp with record flooding.

My favorite memory was when a seal on one window facing east began leaking a bit (one screw needed to be replaced as it rusted as everything does here). These windows can handle 110 mph wind and are double-paned (we only put up shutters for hurricanes and flying debris). Anyway, in driving rain---we are talking blowing rain on a slant from east, high winds, and firehose amounts of water pouring off roof---hubby goes out in his swimsuit, googles and snorkel to put up metal shutters on that leaky window. I got to watch from inside and it was very entertaining. We hoped no neighbors saw him on the front lawn in his outfit. Honestly, it was like he was underwater. The shutters did stop the rain coming in, and the rusty screw was later replaced. Otherwise we had no damage but I have never seen that much rain (our street was flooded for a few hours, but nothing compared to the mainland).

So, morons, do have your duct tape, plastic bags or plastic sheeting, and/or plywood to cover windows if they start leaking.

Prayers for those in Irene's path.

288 "Mandatory Evactuation" really boils down to "if you're dumb enough to stay here, you're on your own and have no recourse for what happens to you".  (Well, unless you can scream to the Feds to take care of you, but if it hits Manhattan that will overload in short order.)

Most of these fools won't recognize the eye of the hurricane, if it hits them, for what it is.  I predict idiots going out and wandering around in it, only to be caught when it passes.

Mind you, this is a worst case scenario, but I've found the 21st century seems to reward those who think in such terms.

Probably, but it is needed to get the attention of those without brains who cannot make decisions for themselves based on data that "you could die."Also trial attorney's would sue the world if mandatory evacuations were not in place.

You cannot arrest and haul people out of their homes. It is their choice. The massive trailer parks in west Florida, which are tornado magnets, should be enough to make you seek shelter. After Charley, one poor demented old lady in a trailer with her cat was spared. She did not know there was a hurricane. Have no idea what she was thinking as the rest of her neighborhood became debris. While she was demented and senile, where were her family in getting her out? Those poor people I excuse from my wrath. In this county they have the old an infirm on a list and bus them out (in addition to the nursing homes). Yet there will be wails echoing Katrina that enough was not done.

"Stuck on stupid" requires "mandatory evacuations." If you want to stay on this island, the sheriff deputies ask you to sign a list of the possible dead and hand them a sharpie to write their SS number on their arms for body ID later. Heck, just the thought of snakes would get me flying to higher ground (note: photos of snakes when the Mississippi flooded plus huge mounds of fireants who float and cannot be destroyed). Surfers yesterday were reporting lots of stinging jellyfish in the waters. No thanks.

326 So, how long before The Firm takes credit for all the pre and post-Irene spending that will take place as folks flee to hotels and home depot?

Those evil big businesses? Well, those in NY and Boston might have to cough up a few bucks for palace repairs.

It will be a good time to be in the windows or roofing businesses. Handymen will suddenly be plentiful so folks need to be careful to watch out for scams. They will be plentiful.

I'm heading out to the beach in a few minutes to watch the waves and the bands roll in. It's a tradition which I've been afforded my entire adult life. I get to watch safely from the sidelines because of the blessed little curve in the coast into which Jacksonville is safely tucked away.

342 Mandatory Evacuations are not the same as police hauling you out of homes. They cannot do that. It is a warning that means "if you stay and die don't blame this county if you die or bad stuff happens." The sheriff's come by and warn those who stay. Some make it fine. Some may die if the storm surge is ever what it predicts. One thing to keep in mind, the Atlantic is deep, the Gulf is shallow, therefore (historically) more damage of storm surge on Gulf.

However, I have read that Ike in Texas was a Cat 2 with a storm surge of a Cat 4 due to tides. This is a full moon tide for NYC, so surge could be worse for a weaker storm. Or it could do nothing. Regardless, I would not want to be in a big city for a storm surge. I do hope Dagny will loot a purse or two for 'ette's, however.

If the NYC hurricane hits and destroys, which I hope and pray it won't, then it could make the aftermath of Katrina become a distant memory of disorder and incompetence.

Y'all remember Gov. Blanco's answer to hurricane prep? She cried.

Tami, you don't have to have water for drinking. Anything that keeps you from dehydrating in the middle of Summer will work: Hi-C, juice boxes, gatorade, fresh fruit. You WILL however, need water for flushing and for hygiene. When a storm approaches everyone goes ape-shit looking for bottled water. Grab some if you can, but if it's a cat fight or if it's scarce, head to the soft-drink aisle. Purchase the single-serving sizes so that they won't require refrigeration after opening.

Water for hygiene and flushing can be stored in a bathtub or cooler. In fact, grab a cooler and fill it up with ice because you can use the melt to drink and clean. Hell, a rubbermaid storage box will hold water that can be used for hygiene.

In the hurricane thread from yesteday I posted a list of things we southerners have learned to have on hand. If you're in the north, it might not be a bad idea to have those items handy in the event of a blizzard too.

Exactly, but in practice - if you stay anything happens to you it will be Bush's fault.

346 I live well away from water so no hurricane advise. For power/water outages afterwards. If you have a yard -that is a perfectly good urinal for all males in the household once the storm has passed. Kitty litter in a lidded bucket will make an emergency camp toilet. Heck they make up kits with litter and paper sacks for mtn climbers on some of the heavy use spots. Your freezer is a decent cooler. Food will stay cold although not frozen for a good amount of time. If you have a generator you can power the freezer on/off, dont need to run it constantly. If you have time before power will be lost and room in your freezer you could freeze some salt water bottles to help keep things cold. Someone already mentioned the hot water heater as a water reservoir and they will truck in water after a few days if the damage is not so widespread they are overwhelmed. Good luck to all you NE coasters.

Some may die if the storm surge is ever what it predicts. One thing to keep in mind, the Atlantic is deep, the Gulf is shallow, therefore (historically) more damage of storm surge on Gulf.

Part of the reason for the severity of the surge on the gulf states also arises from the type of hit they take. The worst part of a storm is the NE quadrant. On the Atlantic side, the storms rarely come in direct (see Andrew). Usually, they follow a path similar to Irene and skim the coast which means the NE quadrant doesn't strike directly. When it does, it's been weakened a bit from the western half being dragged across the land. In the case of Irene, it is coming up from beneath the point in NC, Jaws style, and will take a similar hit to that in the gulf. The same is possible in NY.

Still, Jacksonville hasn't had a direct hit in nearly 50 years, but we are brushed on a fairly regular basis. Even a brush with mere tropical storms has resulted in severe flooding and 5-7 days without power 20 miles inland.

You can't be too prepared.

348 I've never heard of a "Mandatory Evacuation" which actually had police carrying people out of their homes.  The only way I've ever head mandatory evacuations done is "You have to leave.  If you don't leave, anything bad that happens to you is your fault."

What they are saying is that, once the winds reach a certain point, they will not send in the calvary to save your sorry ass if you decide to remain behind. They aren't going to risk additional lives saving them if they think so little of their lives to begin with.

I believe we've never found some of the ones who stayed on the Bolivar penninsula for Ike.  A few were found many months later under the debris piles in wilderness areas.  Sorta like the partial remains that turn up every now and then from Ground Zero.

350 Every house and most apartments have a 50 gallon tank of fresh water ready for use.  It's called the hot-water heater.  Just draw from the drain built in on the side as needed.  I'm sorry but in this state of emergency, you might be called on to drink tap-water.   (After the disaster hits, you can loot the grocery stores for beer...)

Heavier quality plastic sheeting. Go to the paint department of any walmart or kmart and you'll find tons of plastic sheeting. It's very cheap. You will also need it in case a window blows because you'll want to seal up the window once the winds have passed.
