The most miserable cities in the U.S. per Business Insider

It appears that they weighted the drop in home prices the most, so perhaps they should just go ahead and say the biggest home price drop cities. You will see that the bulk of the cities are in the two States with the largest housing bubble bust, CA and FL.

Also a link to the most miserable countries.

And that is it for the news, not much out there this morning. There is one thing though today.

The high here today is supposed to be only 65°. It was 75° at midnight so I suspect that will be the high for today. That is unheard of for mid September. The lowest “high” I have on record previously was 72° in 2008.

So much for Al Gore and his AGW fraud.

"This time, they’re not just out to personally attack the President — they’re also out to mislead Americans about the record of accomplishments that he’s compiled. Just the other day, a Republican financier actually quoted Saddam Hussein in telling a group of millionaire donors that defeating President Obama will be “the mother of all wars.”

Wouldn't that be a little hard to do?

Amen.  It would be a glorious day.

Given that we can not seem to attach profit to fair/just outcomes only, I've felt that of all professions the legal profession is the one most worthy of government regulation.  I think that's one area where the free market isn't the best solution.  Ideally, lawyering would be only a moderately well compensated field, with little incentive to look for ways to exploit the system.  The only way to discourage abuse is to kill the profit motive.  It would take a pretty substantial overhaul and there is no perfect solution that can't be gamed, but surely there must be some way to rein in the madness we have now.

59 I think that's one area where the free market isn't the best solution.

The problem is that it isn't a "free market". Democrats in State and Federal legislators have made suing big buisness ludicrously easy, especially with the phony "partial liability" rules where a judgment that deep pockets have a 1% liability and some doofus has 99% of the fault guess who pays.

As always, a real free market would fix the problem. In addition real reform of the jury selection process and rules of evidence would go a long way as well.

Posted by: Vic at September 16, 2011 07:48 AM (M9Ie6)

I think the latter recommendation - reforming jury selection and rules of evidence is vital, particularly for criminal cases.  I'm not sure, though, that the problems in your first paragraph are really related to a "free market" for legal services.  They are more related to bad liability rules that open the way to exploitation for profit, which is a decision made by the agents of the state.  It is only natural that where such unjust law exists that the unscrupulous will swoop in to take advantage.  Only through measures to kill that ill-gotten profit, which is gained by doing that which is unjust, can we get better outcomes.

The system now rewards those who are unjust.  If deep-pocket corporations can't even afford good enough legal counsel to save themselves, the rest of us have no hope at all.

What other move does she have? It is pretty well known I have a healthy disdain for her, but you're seeing her "accept" that she is not the nominee and she is sticking around just to act as a damper and comic relief.  At least she is capable of grasping she is a mobile punchline unlike Dr. Goldspeculum.

Evangelicals are all Bachmann backing idiots like all RiNO squish spelunkers are Romney fans which is to say "not really".  She attracts the GOP version of  the "Original Bambi backers" who are sorta too dumb to really understand what he is talking about underneath all the cotton candy but boy he/she sure does look good saying it.  Every movement has those types in varying percentages from "low" ala Fred Thompson/Alan Keyes fans to "eleventy%" when you looks at RonPAUL111!!!/Huntsman fans.

The trick is in identifying the mix.

What other move does she have? It is pretty well known I have a healthy disdain for her, but you're seeing her "accept" that she is not the nominee and she is sticking around just to act as a damper and comic relief.

For starters, she can walk it back with the, "I phrased it inartfully."  We all know that's bullshit, but it would at least show she realizes that she's stepped in it.

As for the rest of your comment, I'm right with you.  But my comment about evangelicals is based not just on her and Huck, however.  It's based on having entirely too many conversations with evangelicals who want to talk about my "personal realtionship with Jesus."  As if it's any business of theirs.

I think the common characteristic there is these folks (evangelicals) frequently lack any sense of personal boundaries.  Carry that on long enough you tend to lose all perspective when it comes to talking to anyone who doesn't see the world that way you do.

And Alan Keyes supporters are just as insane as Ron Paul!!!!!! supporters.

General William Shelton, head of the Air Force Space Command, told House members in a classified briefing earlier this month that he was pressured to change prepared congressional testimony in a way that would favor a large company funded by Philip Falcone, a major Democratic donor, congressional sources told Fox News.

There is less to this story that it sounds.  However, I still would not have done it.

Written Congressional testimony is routinely sent to every agency with any potential interest in what the person testifying is going to say before Congress.  That's done to make sure there are no glaring factual errors and that - if the person testifying is an adminstration official - that the testimony is consistent with Administration policy.  Most of the people testifying welcome this internal vetting.  The one one in recent memory I can remember who didn't was Richard Holbrooke.  Huge surprise there.  /sarc off

The act of doing this is routine, and not nefarious.

But the boys in the Pentagon get a lot of leeway in their tesimony when it comes to matters purely military.  That is the reason that I, if I were an OMB staffer, would not have made any "suggestions" to alter his written testimony.

Yeah, me too. I was always one of the cool kids but more because I punished the too earnest with biting sarcasm than because I was overly hip. I stopped watching TV in the late 90s when competing for it became too difficult around here and I was disgusted with the constant libtard message. Quit absorbing their constant cultural memes and the koolaid doesn't reach minimum dosage levels.

I don't have daughters but I do wonder how a society that was supposed to have made women more "equal" in the last 50 years now has them dressing like pole dancers with 1/4 in inseams at age 15--and this is normal and expected? I contend that women have been sadly duped into not only dressing and acting like whores but not getting compensated for it---they're expected to work as much or more than men while providing a lot of the rest of the care.

I had the an experience like the one you described a couple weeks back.

I was in the Campus convenience store at Boston University few years back when in walks some co-ed heading to class in a spandex micro-mini and a seriously low cut top.  - at 8:30 a.m.!!!

I wasn't looking at her at all, but I had to get around her to get in the refrigerator case.  So I slide around her in the aisle and as I am standing there trying to decide if I am going to get the fruit or lemon-lime bottle of G-2, she says, "Perv."

I fonrtunately had the presence of mind to say, "Try not dressing like a slut and I'll try not looking at you like one."

That shut her up.

Sukie, I wish I'd run into more like you then.  Because the military is the opposite.  It's very evangelical and very outspoken about it.  Depending on the branch and part of the country you're in.  Air Force in the upper Midwest?  No issues.  Army in Georgia?  Issues.

I just used to shut them up by saying, "Look, I'm very Catholic, OK?"

Of course then 50% of the time I'd have to listen to the whole "Whore of Babylon" schtick.

To me, religion is intensely personal, and intimate - and it ought to be.  That means there should be boundaries.  You don't run up to people you don't know that well and start having that conversation.  Better to live your faith as an example than to just shout it from the rooftops.  I've just run into too many times where there weren't any boundaries.

165 Sukie, I wish I'd run into more like you then.  Because the military is the opposite.  It's very evangelical and very outspoken about it.  Depending on the branch and part of the country you're in.  Air Force in the upper Midwest?  No issues.  Army in Georgia?  Issues.

Yeah, but that goes both ways.  My wife and in-laws are very evangelical and I am very Catholic.  They've never tried to convert me or anything.

My wife, on the other hand, was asked point-blank by my very old-fashioned Parish priest if she would convert to Catholicism.

My problem with that article is that it keeps claiming that Obama did all those things.

At most, he's castrating our efforts in the Middle East (pulling out of Iraq, not stepping up for Israel, stupid ROE in Afghanistan, etc.).

The rest of it he completely outsourced to Reid/Pelosi and didn't even bother to oversee what they were actually doing.

Which is something Republicans need to hit: All Democrats are tied to Obama, because it was the Congressional Dems who actually implemented most of Obama's agenda.  We need to say it over and over and over: A vote for ANY Democrat is a vote for Barack Obama, and a vote to keep ObamaCare.

175 The teachers at our Catholic high schools are on strike. The last time they struck (I think) I was in school and they didn't close the schools b/c half the teachers were nuns or priests so they could easily cover the striking lay teachers. Not so now - they had to close the schools. It's about seniority, not money - not surprising to me since many of the teacher *I* had - who were old then! - are still teaching. Can't get rid of them. They're great guys and all, but come on! Retire, seriously. And we need more damn nuns and priests or the whole thing is just going to collapse.

Honestly, I think any Christian who isn't asking their friends and family to convert to their denomination is acting (at least a little) in bad faith.  Not so much, perhaps, friends and family who are already Christian (though some of that, too), but certainly if you're a Christian and they aren't, you should be trying to convert them.

Think about it: As Christians, we believe that Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth, and The Life, and that the only way to the Father is through the Son.  We then also, presumably, believe that our own denomination is closer to the "true" church than all the others (or else we'd join a different one that we thought was closer).  If both of those things are true, isn't it an act of loving kindness to try to get your friends and family closer to the True Path?

Now, this is not to say I think everyone should go all Jehovah's Witness and ride our bikes to random strangers' homes, but I don't feel upset in any way when my friends try to convince me that their denomination is closer to the Truth than mine.

Of course, they're all blighted heretics, but I'm pretty sure that's out of ignorance, not malice.

I've never understood those churches.  Church service (I'm not Catholic, so I won't call it "Mass," but, let's face it: Sunday Service is Mass) should be a time of devotion and praise to God.  I don't see how you do that with a rock-band on stage.

I can stand and sing in church directly in front of someone who can't carry a tune in a bucket (and, quite frequently, do) and I'm fine because I know they're singing His praises.  I don't think I could be quite so sanguine if there was a band on stage playing off-key.  If that's the case, that suggests the band being on-stage is about the band, not God, doesn't it?

222 The best way to convert someone is through your actions.

What's been interesting to me here (Provo/Orem) is that the folks really integrate their religion (LDS) into virtually everything they do.  It's very natural to talk about religious things here in just normal conversation.  Although I'm RC, and there's really no chance I would convert to Mormonism, it doesn't bother me.  It's kind of pleasant, in a way.  I sort of feel like I've been transported back in time to my parents' era when they lived in a close-knit (Catholic) community and pretty much everyone shared that aspect of their lives.

I'm not sure how Jews feel about it - because the folks here include overtly Christian things as opposed to more generic type of religious talk - but I have met several Jews who have said they like living here.

No one has tried to convert us, but my husband works for someone really well-connected with the church leadership, so I think we have sort of a little bubble around us.  Folks probably figure if anyone is going to try to convert us, it would be him.

Very true, but trying to convert a devout Protestant when half the people in the country don't believe in God is kinda useless.  It's not like she's hell-bound and godless.

Also, if he brought it up when you were dating/engaged/married, it is completely understandable to me.  A mixed marriage is certainly possible, but I think it's more difficult on both the spouses and their children.  RCism is pretty regimented.

Posted by: Y-not at September 16, 2011 09:28 AM (5H6zj)

He wasn't a bad man by any stretch, but conversion wasn't really going to work in our case.  Both her minister and the priest we were doing marriage counseling with discussed the issues which arise from an interfaith marriage.  The biggie is baptism.  After that things aren't so hard.

Nothing favored by the establishment supports the small guy.
IANAL, but as I understand it the previous patent law gave the edge to the first invented claim, while the new and improved job creating version gives the edge to the first filed.
The example goes like this.  I invent a widget in my garage and document it (photos, drawings, logs, description, witnesses, etc., all dated to establish origination).   I then organize my material and prepare a patent application and submit it to a DMV like patent office.
A big corporation, loaded with labs and lawyers, has been working on a similar widget and finally gets one working a day after my dated proof of concept.  They pull all their material together and submit it to the PO via special messenger one day before my application arrives.
Old rules, after PO review, the lonely garage inventor gets the patent rights as first to invent.
New rules, after the PO review, the lonely garage inventor gets screwed over and the corporation gets the patent rights as first to file.
Sounds about right to me, not!

I just had this same argument with an aunt of mine. It may be just a personal preference thing, but I don't get how one can express the appropriate reverence for God when there's the rock concert/ coffee bar thing going on. It just seems to me like the whole attitude from the "seeker" friendly folks is one of faith being about man and his feelings instead of being about God. But again, that's my opinion. I converted to Catholicism this past year after two years of study and I can't tell you how awful some folks have been to me about it. I've got one cousin who's a Church of God preacher and he takes every opportunity to needle me about how Catholics are going to hell for being a part of the "whore of Babylon." It's more annoying than anything, but i do get tired of the nonsense, esp. since most of his opinion on the subject is based on ignorance and misinformation. I try to mind my own business when it comes to faith and the few conversations I have about it (like the one with my aunt) are always initiated by someone else's inquiry. I try to live my faith as much as possible and let that be an example instead of getting in people's faces or being confrontational. Confrontation turns folks off, in my experience.

For a heavily Democratic state, thatÂ’s pretty darn bad. But so far, no Republican candidate has closed the sale:

I am a lapsed catholic from a family of Protestants who has:

1)been very pious

2)renounced my faith in my teens

3) dabbled in Buddhism and Asatru

4)resumed the faith and begged forgiveness of the maker

5)been disillusioned with the secular invading the clerical

6)left the Church after a Priest took the time to call my newborn son a bastard because the wife and I were married by a judge

7)found happiness with a Baptist Church

can't fins the right flock in my new town.

Faith is how you frame your devotion to Him, it is the most personal matter around.  If you can be a decent citizen and a good Christian it is not your kin and former friends affair how you bend knee.

Even my hellraising father has a form of devotion to the word, he taught me that hard work is how one shows love for family and the Father.

So she's been talking to me about it and I directed her to some good books on various controversial subjects and she's told me how amazed she is at how much she agrees with and how much sense we make. Honestly, there isn't nearly as much difference between us and Protestants as a lot of people think. A sizable portion of the problems are a result of a difference in semantics. I've found that a goodly amount of time we're all saying the same things but using different words, and then arguing about it. So we spend a lot of time arguing about areas where we agree but express it differently instead of hashing out the real doctrinal differences.

Tavis Smiley wants Obama to "look after blacks".

So Smiley is speaking to NBC's Lester Holt and he said that Obama should look after blacks because they represent the most loyal part of his base.  Smiley goes on to ask the brilliant question; "What ever happened to the notion that to the victor goes the spoils?"

Well Tavis, not only are you an ignorant bigot, but you propose a dangerous and damaging precedent.  Let me explain.

Suppose Tavis, that Rick Perry is elected president in 2012.  Can we say that the "most loyal" part of his base are caucasians who need to be looked after? Adopting your precedent that to the victor goes the spoils, can we then have President Perry end affirmative action, kick all minorities off of welfare, and then transfer that wealth to caucasians?  I'm just spit balling here, Tavis, and applying the precedent that you yourself wish to apply.

Do you see now what an ignorant, bigoted, dangerous FOOL you are Mr. Smiley?

294 279 Sean bannion,

it really horrified me...the wife's mom was Pentecostal, she was baptist we had decided when we were courting that we would raise the child with one faith.  Unsolicited she asked to start the Cathechism and had that little gift dropped in her lap.  I started to lung over the table at him and gently reminded him that if he wanted to know why the faith was dying in the US maybe he should preach a little less about social justice and spend a little more energy policing the priest's nocturnal habits.  We were then going to go Anglican but there is a civil war in that Church going on, so I devolved back to going Baptist since my family and the wife are comfy there.

Anyway like I said I don't pry I offer advice on making peace with God when asked how I stay motivated to work or do kindness.  I don't try to convert to one faith or sect I try to explain to people that the human condition requires a sublimation of self to the timeline and mission that faith in God represents.  Understanding that though our time on this planet is short and the work we can do here at best is transitional and attritable the effort and love we give is eternal.

regards,
sven

I've found that the various denominations have much, much more in common than they do in conflict, and it's those who are least well versed in their own denomination who believe the differences are the most vast.

I may disagree with many things the Catholics believe, but I don't believe they aren't Christian.  I get in arguments with Baptists fairly frequently (and they do have one piece of doctrine with which I disagree vehemently), but I would never argue that they're not Christian (wrong, maybe, but still Christian).

308 Palestinian leaders announced on 15 September that they would seek full membership at the United Nations next week.

President, Mahmoud Abbas will address the United Nations General Assembly on 23 September to request the Security Council to recognize Palestine as an independent state - a necessary condition for full UN membership. The Obama administration has promised to veto the resolution.

In announcing the position, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad al-Maliki said he was not closing the door to the possible resumption of peace talks. "We have decided to submit our application for full membership," said al-Maliki. "At the same time, we have said that, until then, we are open to any kind of suggestions, ideas that could really come from any side for the renewal of negotiations."

Any suggestions?

310 "Unsolicited she asked to start the Cathechism and had that little gift dropped in her lap." Ugh! Thats awful! I guess it just goes to show there are jerks in every faith. I really feel lucky that I landed in the parish I did. The priests are great and take the faith seriously. Our pastor is a canon lawyer so he's very much in line with doctrine and at the same time is a very gentle man. There's a really good balance there. Our parochial vicar is a younger guy who is extremely reverent but manages to avd being stuffy. Again, I feel so lucky. I've read about some awful parish experiences from the ultra-liberal ones where they advocate for all sorts of crazy nonsense, to the ultra-conservative ones where everyone not attending mass in Latin is looked down upon. It's a crapshoot sometimes. But like I said, I think that goes on with any faith. It's just the nature of people.

314 282 Vic,

No I do not.  Reflecting on it as I have aged and my passion on the matter has cooled I understand that it was an asshole running his mouth frock or no.  Still haven't been back to Mass nor will I ever.

Besides I thought about my faith and the structure therein a lot in the anger afterwards.

At the end of the day I am more clockworker deist than anything...

I believe in and love God, I cannot look at our universe and life and credit the creation of all things to a catastrophic chemical coincidence.  Judeo-Christian doctrine and morals seem to me to be the best way to express love for the Creator and have a moral community.  Certain people's vocal reliance on constant divine intervention and miracles seems a heretical narcissism to me were I to have a more structured theological bent than I do I would in all likelihood still include a purgatory in my view.

Freewill is inherent in our faith, and the aforementioned narcissist acts like the Maker is manipulating reality non-stop.  I figure He does miracles to reset the clock, but mostly he allows creation to go towards whatever end is His plan.  Unlike some more vocal Deist types and atheists I cannot believe that we simply cease to be at the end.

The mystery of it all still keeps my interest.

Sounds like you're in my parish.  LOL.

The younger parochial vicar has the best homilies.  Theologically rich, but still really practical.  The older PV has a sense of humor as dry as kindling and it shows every week.  He was my daughter's baptism sponsor (Godfather) and he comes to pick her up and hold her before every mass, just like it was his kid.

The Pastor is, unfortunately, a rabid Packers fan.  But we don't hold that against him.

318 There is one sin that can't be forgiven I thought, but it is pretty specific and even then there are loopholes.

The Bible says that "Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit" is the only unforgivable sin- but I've always learned (and my reading of the Bible seems to back up) that the problem there is that true Blasphemy (claiming to be God, or to be greater than God) is a condition which won't allow you to repent, not that God won't forgive you, but that you won't ask.  Once you're no longer doing that, of course, you could receive forgiveness, but the Sin itself is one that tends to go on, as opposed to, say, a lie, or murder, or something that is more "done and over."

He wants to wrestle, take judo, and is a swimmer.  His goal has been to be in the Coast Guard since he was 5 or so.  I am trying to talk him into playing football like I did, but he doesn't like blindside contact.

Lacrosse is awesome. It's a contact sport and rising in popularity. My boys all play football and lacrosse. They dropped soccer or kickball as they call it because it was all the skateboarders, potheads, and lawn fairies.

Let me caution you about wrestling. I had two boys wrestle until I said "NO MORE". It was great to teach them how not to EVER be afraid and be able to drop anyone who has not wrestled especially all the *snort* karate, judo, martial arts wusses. However, wrestling is a filthy, dangerous sport. The mats they wrestle on are covered with more diseases than a Singapore whore. Here are the diseases and injuries we had to deal with because of wrestling and I'm not including dehydration, malnutrition, low blood sugar, etc from "making weight"

Wrestling warts, impetigo, ring worm, damaged ears, bacterial skin infections (4) of undetermined type, a broken elbow requiring surgery, MRSA, other staff, a PICC line to administer intraveneous antibiotics to the heart to combat the MRSA, broken ankle requiring 6 screws and a plate, busted lips, black eyes, and potential encephelitis.

Football is far far safer (esp because of the helmet--no helmet in basketball or soccer).

Start them young so they know how to play by middle school--it's the noobies that get hurt.

As I said earlier I believe in miracles, I also believe they are rare enough they merit the definition of "not common enough events to be called everyday".

If I were to believe God had anything to do with that horrible day it would be that we didn't suffer more dead, and that he steeled the spines of the men of flight 93 to do right in protecting their brothers and sisters regardless of cost.

Good points, but actually I was referring to blasphemy against the spirit, which Jesus says cannot be forgiven.  In terms of suicide I think that's one only God can sort out.

sven,

I would never excuse a priest calling your son a bastard.  Where he was coming from was the fact that the Church does not recognize your marraige because it was performed outside of the Church. Since the Church does not regard you and your wife as being married, this priest concluded that your child was born out of wedlock.

I'm not making any judgements, I am only providing insight as to where the priest was coming from. Clearly the priest could have handled that situation with more care.

Look for (in the South) a Church of Christ (note: NOT United Church of Christ, or Church of Christ, United).  In the North, look for a Christian Church (yes, that'll be their name).

The Stone/Campbell movement that eventually became those two denominations was started by Presbyterians in the mid-to-late 1700s.  Most of the Presbyterian trappings are either gone or heavily modified (as I understand it) but much of the theology is the same.

CofC and the CC used to be proof-positive of conservatism (in religion), but it's less sure now.  You have have to visit a few congregations before you find one.

Since the Church does not regard you and your wife as being married, this priest concluded that your child was born out of wedlock.

The priest was wrong.  The Catholic Church recognizes the validity of all civil marriages - including the legitimacy of the resulting children.

What the Church would ask though, is that people "co-validate" civil marriages in the Church.

When my wife heard that she said, "Another wedding?  Sign me up."  ;-)

But that did NOT mean, my daughter was illegitimate because we had not been married in the Church at that point..

How a priest can make it all the way through seminary and not know all this, is completely beyond me.

My reaction was the glint in his eye and the fact he seemed almost dismissive of the wife's interest. I am not proud of my (over)reaction, but I also have not looked back and felt the need to go through the doors again. My son has a purer more earnest faith in the word than I ever did, and his mother is a better shepherd to that innate faith than I could ever be. I have always had a little too much of Thomas in me.

That's because it's human nature to argue.  If I had to guess, I'd say its part our Pride and Selfishness: we want to be seen as "smarter" than the other guy (God knows that's my flaw.  One day I hope he (gently) teaches me humility).  If we focused on what we had in common, we wouldn't get to impress the other guy with our brilliance.  Conversations would go like this:

"Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior."
"Yup."
...
...
"Nice weather we're having."

352 Yeah. I told him that I was getting tired of reading in the press how "cute" he is.

There is a difference between being married and being sacramentally married. They recognize civil unions but not for sacrmental purposes. Your kid isn't "illigitimate" but you can't take communion, go to confession, be confirmed, etc.

Given our (fallen) human nature it would probably be more like:

"Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior."

"Yup."

...

...

"Nice weather we're having."

"Nice weather?!? Horseshit!  It's brutal!  How can you stand this humidity?!?  What? Are you some kind of mutant?"

359 354 Sean Bannion, Spiker has an interesting line of inquiry using old doctrine though. I have often wondered what the Catholic colonials who took on a native wife here in the colonies must have been put through by the Parish. The doctrine of innate bastardy through refusal to recognize non-conventional unions seems self-defeating for purposes of conversion to me. When I try to detach my faith from my scholarship with regards to the Church's expansion it has become apparent o me that the founders of the Church were very flexible in their civil law understanding in the early days. I suspect the evolution of the archaic doctrine espoused by some diehards had to do with the Church eventually controlling inheritance in the secular world. Would be fascinating to be able to go look at in person. It is a touchy subject to me anyway because my grandfather was a bastard from a time where that still carried hurtful meaning.

360 Some of those differences are pretty important, though.

Some of them are, but you'll notice (if you pay close enough attention) that even the degree of importance of the differences is one of the differences.  The Church of Christ (in as much as we have a single, set doctrine) says that Baptism (full immersion, no less) is required for salvation- most other denominations take a "Yes, but" approach to it.  When you get a CoC member and, say, a Methodist arguing about it, the Methodist will mostly say "meh."  If someone from the CoC and a Baptist start in on it, though, you might as well sell tickets.

What that tells me is that most of the differences are not as important as we think they are.  God wants our hearts, minds, souls, and strength.  There are specific things he spells out that he requires, but my Bible only has three commands actually given to Christians: Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy mind, all thy soul, and all thy strength.  Love thy neighbor as thyself.  Love each other as Jesus loved us.

If you're doing those things, I figure God will sort the rest out.

But I'd also go on to point out, it's not about the man at the altar, it about the man on the Cross.

This is so important and I can't emphasize it enough. The "Church" is not the "church" in so many ways. You can't expect every priest, minister, lay minister, nun, teacher, etc to behave like Jesus. They are not. They are flawed.

I get up and teach from the catechism. I don't dare utter a word that doesn't have an imprimature because I am SO flawed. I can't even IMAGINE what would come out of my mouth if I didn't chain myself to revelation and Church approved text.

In fact the other night I was talking about the idea that one way we know there is a God because of  widespread moral law (this is in the catechism). A guy (who I'm gonna like) mentioned the islamists. I almost choked trying to get through a reply that didn't include my own inclinations in that area.

That would have been hard for me.  Good you held yourself back.  I think my answer would have been, "Yes, that's proof of God.  It's not proof they are correct in their view.  One step at a time..."

I'd like to audit your RCIA class.  Sounds great to be surrounded by enthusiasm.

Huh. The Church always wanted to just regularize the union. They call it validating it. They would only not validate it if there was an impediment--impediments included and still include, prior marriages, unwillingness or coersion on the part of one of the people, non-baptism, the refusal to have children or to raise them catholic. Now they will even wed a non-baptized person and a catholic but it creeps them out. The marriage is then valid for the catholic but not sacramental. If any couple approached the church and said, we need to be married, I doubt it ever said, "we refuse" without a good reason.

Thank you, dagny, for clearing that up.

That squares with my conversion story.  I could not recieve the sacraments until my marraige to my ex-wife was annulled because she was a catholic and failed to marry me in a Catholic Church.  I was not Catholic at the time.

I basically had to "clear the slate" before I could take communion.  That included receiving a conditional baptism because we were not sure my initial non-Catholic baptism included the words "In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."

370 372 Sean, your words bring to mind the thought ... "I desire mercy, not sacrifice ... "

Posted by: Honey Badger at September 16, 2011 07:12 AM (GvYeG)

371 371 Dagny,

I guess my point in "refusal" is running out of the gate with the harsh stare about it over history.  Of course the Church wants you married within the faith and always would have, but to use that particular hammer so forcefully to get people there?  It wasn't even needed the wife and I had said when we married that the Judge's marriage was simply our "first wedding" and that at some point we would be married by a Priest or Pastor for our own state of mind.

I may have not waited long enough for him to smile a beaming smile and say "but we'll take care of that."  I was younger and a lot more hotheaded in the nineties.  The religion talk just got me to reflecting back on it, and as Sean said at a minimum he expressed current doctrine so inartfully it may as well have been 180 from current thought.

This is why the Catholic Church moves their priests around.  They want to prevent "priest worship".

377 The mystery of it all still keeps my interest. -sven

I like the ecumenical approach John Paul II lent our pilgrimage through life as Christians. "Mutual respect is a prerequisite for authentic ecumenism. (154)." It's fascinating to appreciate the cultural distinctions of the various Christianities, and to consider the historical events and personalities that effected such schisms in order to monopolize "truth" (stumbling blocks). "I think that it is wrong to maintain that Saint Thomas's position stands up only in the realm of the rational. Saint Thomas celebrates all the richness and complexity of each created being, and especially of the human being. It is not good that his thought has been set aside in the post-conciliar period; he continues, in fact, to be the master of philosophical and theological universalism. In this context, his quinque viae--that is his 'five ways' that lead toward a response to the question 'An Deus sit?'--should be read. (31)." "Truth, in fact, cannot be confined. Truth is for one and for all. And if this truth comes about through love, then it becomes even more universal (162)." Crossing the Threshold of Hope, 1994.

Interestingly, the Coptic Christians firm doctrine separates church and state based upon Jesus' admonition to give to Caesar what's his and unto God that which is God's. And of course the massive annihilation (literally given Constantine's Legions) of any Christian sect believing in anything that Rome found threatening to it's monopoly on power, having merged church with state for empirical theocracy, killing every heretic who dare think according to his own conscience, faith and beliefs -- no matter scripture so easily revised by the "victors" of war. There's a brief video highlighting the book of the same name Constantine's Sword that makes interesting historical observations by a former Catholic Priest, James Carroll, a National Book Award winner and columnist for the Boston Globe and still a practicing Catholic. And of the Coptics, those indigenous Egyptians who predate the Muslim conversion, they are being annihilated today no thanks to America's foreign policy. The same fate of annihilation enabled by US foreign policy besets the indigenous Christians throughout vast quadrants of the globe, from the Balkans and Near East through Arabia, Egypt and Africa.

Considering their fate, Pope John Paul II spoke of all the Christian martyrs throughout the globe. "They have completed in their death as martyrs the redemptive sufferings of Christ and, at the same time, they have become the foundation of a new world, a new Europe, and a new civilization (177)." In search of lost unity: "So there is a basis for dialogue and for the growth of unity, a growth that should occur at the same rate at which we are able to overcome our divisions--divisions that to a great degree result from the idea that one can have a monopoly on truth (147)." Of the validity of "proof", "Cognitive realism, both so-called naive realism and critical realism, agrees that 'nothing is in the intellect that was not first in the senses'. Nevertheless, the limits of these 'senses' are not exclusively sensory. We know, in fact, that man not only knows colors, tones, and forms; he also knows objects globally--for example, not only all the parts that comprise the object 'man' but also man in himself (yes, man as a person). He knows, therefore, extrasensory truths, or, in other words, the transempirical. In addition, it is not possible to affirm that when something is transempirical it ceases to be empirical. It is therefore possible to speak from a solid foundation about human experience, moral experience, or religious experience. ... Inasmuch as positivism distances us--and, in a certain sense, excludes us--from a more global understanding, hermeneutics, which explores the meaning of symbolic language, permits us that more global understanding, and even, in some sense, to deepen it (33-35)." Crossing the Threshold of Hope, 1994.
