— Ace First up, some conservative entertainment, if you consider perversion and mutilation and murder conservative, and I have it on good authority from the media that it is.
This film is a low-budget independent thing done by a friend of the site. A long time ago I mused that the Grand Guignol theater might be a good setting for a horror movie, and I guess I wasn't alone in this idea.
Called Theater Bizarre, it's getting some attention, including from Film Threat. One of the segments -- it's a horror anthology movie, with multiple stories, like Creepshow or the old Trilogy of Terror -- was directed by Hobo With A Shotgun's DP, so there's some more AoS Lifestyle linkage.
I'm linking the trailer but I have to re-warn with a very special Ultra Gore Macabre Content Horrific Imagery Just Plain Awfulness NSFW Warning. Seriously, this is not for anyone who's not into this kind of thing.
Now comes The Thing prequel, also called... The Thing. I don't know, looks a little bit exactly like the first one, except now we have two chicks and a bunch of Norwegians in it. I sort of like the chick, but I don't think chicks belong in a Thing movie. The first one was notable for not having chicks, and better for it: A bunch of men alone in the cold, with no women, subtracted virtually everything light and sexual and human from the situation, and made it into pure animal survival.
I was underwhelmed when I heard they were doing a prequel and still am.
I know this should get some people interested -- John Carter of Mars, but just called John Carter, I guess because People hate Mars.
I dunno about that one, either. Not as barbaric and swords & laser-ish as I was expecting. Seems a little plodding. Did they want "plodding" in the trailer?
Oh, and did you guys know they're rebooting Spiderman just like eight years after it was booted? So another origin story. No trailer, but there are pictures.
Spiderman has a new costume. The problem with the old one? Not gay enough.

H/t to Norm MacDonald for that joke.
And more geek stuff at Geek Week Online. Including new Hobbit pictures, of the dwarves.*
* I know this sentence sucks; you try writing it. "Including new dwarf pictures from The Hobbit." Including new hobbit dwarf pictures. See? It's a problem.

Just from the John Carter trailer, it looks like they are actualy going to follow the book... even the narrative with the 'nephew'....
Kudos to Disney... its refreshing to see Hollywood, NOT think they can rewrite a classic story.
Now if we could just get someone to give StarShip Troopers the same respect...

I don't care for Carpenter's The Thing. The original Hawks' version is a much better film.
Oh thank Cthulhu it's not just me.
If we're talking horror trailers, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark looks good, if only because for once you have a character who decides that leaving when the creepy shit happens is a good idea.

The Thing is a love it or hate it film, no in-between. Carpenter's is fantastic, IMO. Particularly the defibrillator scene.
But that was the glory of late 70s early 80s horror. REAL VISCERAL special effects. Look at Day of the Dead, The Thing, Videodrome, The Fly, Suspira...
Bloated CGI can't compare to it.

I think that's what kills a lot of these remakes is that they try too hard to relate to the current generation. Just keep it old school and let the actors act.

John Carpenter's The Thing was great, but it doesn't wear well watching it over again- much of what made it a good movie was the weird / scary shit you didn't quite see coming.

Why would it have to be "John Carter of Mars"? That was the name of the last book, composed of partial stories.
Since this is the origin, it should be "A Princess of Mars", or perhaps since the first three books form a trilogy, call it "The Warlord of Mars - Episode 1" or somesuch.
What looks more interesting is the themes in that clip. Let me see . . . you have the Red Men of Mars (Native Americans) bemoaning the impending collapse of their ecosystem (Anthropogenic Climate Change) to Captain of Militia John Carter of Virginia (Old White Man With A Sword AND Slaves), who has super powers (The One), and who will eventually save them all (The Waters Begin to . . . Rise). Oh yeah, I have GOT to see how that works out.
Oh, and as all Tolkien Geeks know, the proper plural of "dwarf" is "dwarrows", so "Including new Hobbit pictures of the dwarrows."

The only notes of interest from this evening's debt ceiling meeting are Boehner telling Obama that the current option doesn't solve the problem and the fact that there is no meeting tomorrow. Obama has given Congress 24-36hrs to discuss options with their conference/caucuses before they go to Plan B. Only the WH and Senate Dems apparently know what that is.

130 The Thing was a guy in a suit(James Arness),there was bno claymation.
I think he was incorrectly referring to JC's The Thing as the original. The Blairmonster at the end of the film is mostly stop-motion, and it rocks. Love the tentacle searching out the detonator and pulling it into the hole.

Presumably at least one of them was still human because, if both of them had been consumed by that thing, it would know.
So one of them is not human. Is there any particular evidence to support which one?
The video game version from about ten years ago answers the question, but I don't know if that's considered Thing canon.

Posted by: steevy at July 14, 2011 08:49 PM
steevy, there are some things that are hard to understand but they're very common. That is exactly -- I hesitate to tell you -- how my great-uncle regressed. He rallied fantastically right before the end. I thought he was on his way back to health, but it was the opposite. The healthcare workers told me such a spike in a person's apparent well-being just before their descent was common.

Now, some of you younger f*cks might not remember or realize this, but the 1982 "Thing" was both a box office disappointment and a critical mediocrity.
Then again, most professional movie critics are failed filmmakers, and ankle-biting leftist cockholster assholes who write their reviews as a way to assuage their jealousy of those who are talented and lucky enough to actually have a career making films.
I've learned to use film critics as an indicator, if they love it, the film's almost guaranteed to be a raging bore, better used as a cure for insomnia.

Yeah but does anybody think it's good? It was considered a lame comedy then, and it's still considered a lame comedy now, isn't it?
Or am I wrong about that? I'm not sure I've ever seen it all the way through. People think Terry Kiser gave a great performance, at least, don't they? It can't be easy being a funny corpse.

Have the medical folks checked her for dehydration? I don't know what it's like where you are, but it's hotter than heck here. When someone is medically fragile, they can get dehydrated FAST, and the heat can make that happen even faster.

My favorite Aeroflot joke:
In the West, the drinking rule for pilots is "at least 24 hours from bottle to throttle"
For Aeroflot, pilots are strictly prohibited from drinking within 24 feet of the aircraft.

That Assad photo: yeah, bullshit. The left side of the room is marble and creates reflections. The right side of the room is carpeted and does not. The table in the middle straddles both and creates both a reflection on the marble and a what(?) shadow on the carpet? A reflection and a shadow that match up perfectly? Oh. And, nothing else on the carpeted side of the room creates a shadow? Not even Assad himself?

Whatever may have happened in the video game version, the impression I got at the end of the movie is that they killed The Thing, but couldn't be sure it was gone for good. They destroyed all the buildings to deny it the ability to get warm, forcing any potentially remaining traces of it into hibernation so anyone who came in the future wouldn't be exposed.
The movie gave the impression that the remaining two survivors were destined to freeze to death, a fate they accepted. I don't recall any reason (in the movie) to suspect that either one was infected.

Well they talk about it in their last scene. They're sitting there in the cold and say that even if one of them is one of those things, the other one is too tired to do anything further about it. They acknowledge that they're going to freeze anyway, and they say that it's probably for the best, which only makes sense if they're concerned that one of them might be one of those things.
Nothing is concrete. They could be wrong, but given the paranoid nature of the film, it makes sense that they could never be sure.
