Tropical Storm Irene Update (tmi3rd)
— Open Blogger

A good Sunday morning to you, Morons and Moronettes. Lots of good news this morning, not the least of which is Irene starting to move out of the area. It has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, which just means that sustained winds are now below 75 mph.

There are currently no tornado watches up for the affected areas as Irene came ashore over New York City (!) at about 9 AM EDT. To give you some idea, in my 30+ years living in New Orleans, I've never seen an eye pass right over the city.

We now turn our attention to inland effects from tropical storms. Believe it or not, this is usually when people start getting killed. So if you're in the path, there's still plenty of storm to deal with.

In honor of CoolCzech, more below the cleavage... 5-day.gif

Okay, so Irene's center of circulation is near the western CT/MA border, and looks like it's going to follow the VT/NH border north-northeast into Quebec along the Maine-Quebec border. As is usually the case with tropical systems as they break down and become what we call extratropical, you can expect the forward speed to continue to pick up (last I saw, the storm was moving 23 knots on bearing 020) and haul ass out of the neighborhood.

You'll notice as well that as Irene interacted with land, the nice radial symmetry of the rain bands fell apart, and the eye began to close up. This means that the storm's warm-core (tropical) characteristics are beginning to fade as it no longer has warm, open water to feed it.

Inland, you can expect tropical storm force winds all the way up the Northway in eastern New York, all of Vermont, all of New Hampshire, all of Maine, and you're already there in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Rain estimates have ranged from 7.5 inches around Hartford to 2 or so inches in West Gloucester, RI. As the storm picks up speed and exits the area, you can expect totals to have a harder time getting to six inches. However, given the fact that it's been a pretty wet summer, you're still under a risk of flooding.

Flood watches and warnings are up for all of New England except for the northern third of NH, VT, and NY around Lake Ontario.

So, New England, let's call our rainfall guesses 4 to 6 inches, and I'm aiming high to be on the safe side. Irene, again, should haul ass out of the neighborhood and largely be confined to Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes by this time tomorrow morning.

For those of you on the back end of this system, the rainfall totals have been pretty impressive... but this is a trademark characteristic of landfalling hurricanes. Highlights... Kent and New Castle Counties in Delaware report 8+ inches, Caroline and Talbot Counties in Maryland check in with 11+ inches, the NJ counties are largely reporting 7-9 inches, and the eastern Pennsylvania counties are reporting 4-8 inches.

During the cleanup, local emergency management officials are going to ask you to stay off the streets. Check your property for damage, to be sure, but please don't go out in this. Adam Baldwin (whom I respect and admire) was bitching about Bloomberg urging people to stay indoors (granted, Bloomie shouldn't have said it was illegal to be out- it's a state of emergency, not martial law), and the reason that we ask you not to go out during the storm and immediate damage assessment following it is that it's real easy to impede emergency traffic. Just about every medic unit is going to be looking for sick and injured, and most law enforcement officers I know regard anyone they encounter out in the storm as a probable bad guy.

Bottom line- let us get out there and secure damaged areas, cordon off downed power lines, and so forth. People out even in the immediate aftermath wind up driving into flooded areas or getting into other kinds of trouble. Sure, it means another full day of mindless boredom, but it beats becoming part of the statistics.

Finally, you've probably already heard this, but New York's MTA is not going to be up and running for the Monday rush, and probably not for the evening, either, while they do their inspections. Sucks, but you can basically plan for no mass transit on Monday.

There'll be a final AoSHQ Advisory on Irene this evening, and probably a wrap-up post on this later. I'm curious to hear about damage in NYC... it sounds like Maryland, Delaware, Philadelphia, and the Jersey Shore really got the crap kicked out of them. I hope everyone's safe and can just kick back and enjoy the day.

As ever, I'll be floating around. It's been my pleasure and honor to cover this storm with you, and if you would, please think about ways we can improve our coverage of this. Hopefully, this has been a less hysterical way of following things than the breathless prognostications of DOOOOOOOM you get if you turn on the TV.

Thanks!

When I went through Red Cross certification one of the things they warned us about when going in to do storm recovery was DO NOT walk in flooded streets. Folks have stepped into sewer drains and uncovered manholes and died. Besides that, the last thing you want is tetanus (or worse) from cutting yourself in the filthy water.

3 In my corner of Eastern Mass, near the NH line, it looks like we saw the worst of it about 45 minutes ago.

We have one band that extends all the way to the south coast near New Bedford, and that will be it.

Late this afternoon I will be checking the basement and picking up sticks.

4 Obama takes charge at the NHC and the storm falls to pieces, kinda like when we gave him charge of the economy. He really is a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure.

You've done a great job, tmi3rd: Lots of information, a word of caution, and a generous amount of high hopes and wishes for those in its path. I can't think of anything I'd change.

16 If Irene isn't bad as originally anticipated, doesn't that mean, in Krugman speak, this is bad in itself because the economic "benefit" from the storm won't be as great because there wasn't as much destruction?

25 I don't think that anything beats the sight of Tucker Barnes giving his reports covered in sewage foam. That is probably the best metaphor for reporters that I've seen. Everyone is trying to be Hurricane Dan, and this genius seeing the foam and thinking it will make an impressive shot, jumps right in. Smells like shit, tastes like shit, but at least I don't have to roll in it as the wind is coating me with it. My super nature smarts don't kick in to tell me sea foam doesn't smell this bad or that it isn't a sickly green color, no just get the damn shot, I'm going national on this one.

Any, OT, Instapundit has a thing up about Sen Warner of Virginia saying that the SuperFriends should make a deal on $4T in deficit reduction. I guess Ryan moved the Overton Window - he was called extreme by (some) Republicans and here is a Democrat saying we need to shoot for $4t - I am guessing that is on top of the $1.9T or whatever the fake number is already. All I can say is wow. Now Warner is in Virginia and the Tea Party is strong here. Steyn's right - we the voters have to make an electoral environment in which the wrong people do the right thing.

38 I don't watch TV news, so I've spent the last couple of days hunkered down getting information online. Thanks for all the reports. I survived in good shape. Here in the northern Philly suburbs, the rain has stopped but the wind has really picked up. For most of the storm I got a shitload of rain, but at times there was hardly any wind. My sump pump was running every 15-30 seconds for several hours. I got some water seepage into my laundry room, but that's been known to happen during heavy downpours. My power stayed on, which was always my biggest concern since I'm not in a flood-prone area. My grass looks like it's grown 3" since yesterday morning. So the storm turned out to be less severe than forecast. Good! Most of us can count ourselves lucky. I'm not one of those calling it a nothingburger. That attitude disturbs me. It means that people may be more complacent for the next hurricane to hit the Northeast, whether it happens two weeks or ten years from now.

43 Believe it or not, this is usually when people start getting killed.

Bloomberg tried to blame Irene for a guy who fell off his ladder, trying to board up his house.  The guy didn't die (though Bloomberg brought him up in a discussion of hurricane deaths - sort of whistful that the guy was still hanging on, like the scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail - "I'm not dead!").

Given this, I am extremely suspicious of how they blame deaths on the storm.  It seems that if someone gets fatally stabbed during Irene, that's a storm death.  Luckily, physical injury and deaths were probably down just from the storm keeping the scum and their targets off of the streets.

Don't buy it yet.  You'll be able to get one for $1.49 at the local Thrift Store after January 20, 2013.

Posted by: Billy Bob, the guy who drinks in SC at August 28, 2011 12:09 PM (hXJOG)

Agree with Billy Bob.  Excellent update.

Right on schedule, the heavier rains and higher winds have arrived in New York (upstate), and all of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.  Power is out in southern Vermont as trees are taking a beating.  Large trees reported down and power lines snapped in two or three areas already.  Heavier rain and higher winds (gusts to 50-60 mph) are expected throughout the day and into the evening as Irene heads for Canada.

Because the eye of the storm broke down a few hours sooner than predicted, we should be a little better off.  We'll still get 3-4 inches of rain and that means lots of localized flooding and road washouts, and power failures are almost guaranteed.  Over 10,000 without power in Vermont right now, but no deaths or even serious injuries reported yet.  Let's hope it stays that way.

136 Heavy rain and wind gusts to 40 mph are raising Hell in Vermont at this hour.  Six counties in southern and central Vermont are without power (over 10,000 people), numerous roads are closed by flooding, many trees are down and the worst of the storm appears to have arrived this far north.  The barometric pressure on my weather instruments dropped from 29.73 to 29.61 in fifteen minutes and is still falling.  That's a far cry from the 28.05 reading when Irene was a hurricane, but it's still plenty low.  Wallingford, VT seems to be one of the hardest hit towns.  It's flooded big time and the water continues to rise at two inches per hour.

I hear ya CoolCzech, I have 32 frozen Poland Spring bottles of water sitting in a cooler for the anticipated power loss.

I bought a year's worth of batteries and some flashlights, lanterns, food that you don't have to cook.

I seriously thought this was going to be a bigger deal though, really.

Totally bummed.

Posted by: jaimo at August 28, 2011 10:35 AM (8Mnyu)

146 jaimo: You should have ALL of that stuff already. I do, which is why the only thing I had to buy for this storm was ice. I already had a case of one-pint spring water bottled sitting around. That's in addition to my collection of five-gallon bottles. Based on a tip I read on another blog, I stuffed as many of those one-pint bottles as I could into my freezer, so they froze solid. That way, if I lost power, I could have placed them around my refrigerator to help keep my food cold. Now that the storm is over, I'll thaw out those bottles and put them back into the case for next time. You can also do the same thing with plastic Rubbermaid containers filled with water. Leave a little room for expansion when the water freezes.

Dude, I live in Connecticut, nothing ever happens here.  The only season I worry is winter and not that often.

As i said in my original post the last time we lost power was 20 years ago in Hurricane Bob.

I don't keep that kind of stuff around, and if I did have it at one time, it's long since gone.  So basically I was replacing stuff I might have had once.

Duh, I know I can thaw the bottles of water (which I don't usually buy) we have water bottles deposits in Connecticut, so i usually buy the big 3 gallons refrigerator tap jugs.

We have no power but no major damage.  We will, however, have a lot fewer leaves to clean up in the fall.  My driveway is green.  Some tree limbs down but nothing major.  I haven't been out and about but understand from those that have there are trees down everywhere.  Apparently, a ferry in Norwalk is now located in a park.

Even we found Hurricane Irene to be a bit overhyped.

154 One thing that doesn't seem to be mentioned is that the snakes may be using downed trees, limbs, etc. as places to perch until the ground is dry enough for them to disappear again.  I don't know if it will be much of a problem for you folks in the NE but down here in Fla. snake bites account for a significant number of injuries post hurricane.

Our local lake is tidal and has flooded nearby roads and at least one business. for all that the winds were not very impressive, I feel for those who receive the brundt of the tidal surge.

156 I'm on the Barneget, a mile from the ocean. We get thunderstorms much more powerful. The flooding was equal to what we get during rain at high tide. Overhyped to make JEF look good. Didn't work.

157 You really make it seem so uderstandable with your presentation but I find this topic before really hard to understand. It seems too complicated and very broad for me.
