— Guest Blogger The Wall Street Journal ran a great article this weekend discussing how Twitter has become an important resource for both researchers and scientists. Twitter is now being used to track political campaigns and activity, gauging box-office movie and television buzz, predicting the stock market moves, even monitoring natural disasters.
When Virginia's magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit last August, the first Twitter reports sent from people at the epicenter began almost instantly at 1:51 p.m.—and reached New York about 40 seconds ahead of the quake's first shock waves, according to calculations by the social media company SocialFlow. The flood of messages peaked at 5,500 tweets a second.Compared with information from cellphone records and social-media sites, Twitter texts are as timely as a pulse beat and, taken together, automatically compile the raw material of social history.
The first terse tweets also outpaced the U.S. Geological Survey's conventional seismometers, which normally can take from two to 20 minutes to generate an alert. The agency is now experimenting with Twitter as a faster and cheaper way to track earthquakes.
Never have scientists had so much readily accessible, real-time data about what people say. Twitter, the service that allows users to send text updates of up to 140 characters out to the public, publishes more than 200 million messages, or tweets, a day. Compared with information from cellphone records and social-media sites, Twitter texts are as timely as a pulse beat and, taken together, automatically compile the raw material of social history.
I know many of you have been reluctant to jump into Twitter, but I highly recommend it. After ridiculing it as useless celebrity nonsense at first, I find myself getting more and more of my news and information from Twitter. It's very easy to tailor your feed to your own specific interests. For example, I follow web designers and developers, Yankees, Giants and PGA beat writers, racist homophobic hatemongers right-wing bloggers, political journalists and news outlets, and tech magazines.
Take a look at this chart showing political activity from the left and right:

Quit lurking, Twitter lurkers and go sign up so you can join in the fun. Do you really want to be the last person to know that Anthony twittered his weiner? Not me; I don't want to live in that world.
For those that want desktop clients instead of the browser interface: Here are the best for Mac, PC and Linux. Don't forget both iPhone and Android have official Twitter apps for when you're on the go. I recommend disabling email notifications.
I've included some must-follows below the fold along with an infographic explaining the basics (sign up for Twitter first, then click the links and hit "follow").
Official AoSHQ:
Ace Blog Feed (conveniently updated 20-30 minutes after a post is published), Ace (personal), DrewMTips, DaveinTexas, Slublog, GabrielMalor, RDBrewer
AoSHQ Guest Bloggers:
@moelane, @bdomenech, @ComradeArthur, @verumserum, @cuffymeh, @JammieWF, @TheH2, @johnekdahl
Funny Right-Wingers:
@jtlol (Jim Treacher), @iowahawkblog, @andylevy, @andrewbreitbart, @jonahnro (Jonah Goldberg)
Columnists and Media:
@ByronYork, @jamestaranto, @jaketapper, @allahpundit, @stephenfhayes
That's a good starter list. Feel free to poke around. Every politician and media operation has a Twitter account now. If you're having trouble finding people to follow, just go to someone you like (Ace has a good list) and click "following". Then scroll through and follow those you want. That's always a good start.
As promised, my quick lesson in how to understand the basics of Twitter:

It's a partisan war on Twitter. Quit standing on the sidelines, n00bs. I didn't want to bring this up, but Ace is really upset he can't get past 9,000 followers. We've had some deep conversations about it and plenty of good, long cries together (we've both learned a lot about ourselves and each other). I don't want to get too personal, but... anyway, follow Ace on Twitter please.

WSJ talked about that. Righties use the lefties hashtag (#p2 - "progressive 2.0") more than lefties use the righties (#tcot - "top conservatives on twitter")
We use #p2 to mock them, mostly.

Speaking of Twitter, in a strange moment of bizarre synthesis, the demonic Westboro Baptist "Church" has announced plans to protest Steve Jobs' funeral.
"He had a huge platform: gave God no glory and taught sin."
They announced the plan via Twitter...
...using an iPhone.

Even still, what you you tweet about? What you had for lunch?
I tried that with Michael Ian Black. He posted something about a trip to McDonald's. It's not that I don't care what Michael Ian Black orders at McDonald's; it was just that he made it sound so mundane. I mean, I know what it's like to eat at a McDonald's. I looked at Twitter to see what it was like for a celebrity to eat at McDonald's. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe Michael Ian Black was just unable to hook me with his lunch choice that day.
Then I found out that Miley Cyrus stopped tweeting altogether. That's when I lost all hope.

Or is it different?

I also don't care that much what others are saying/doing to be bothered with it, especially when, as my experience on there shows, my feed always ends up with about the same thing being spammed by everyone within a few hours time, and I get the same thing from the same people via AIM; where you can...you know...actually discuss it.
It drives my friend, whose a Verizon regional sales trainer, up a wall because he's always trying to get me on there again. He's also trying to convince me to get an android phone, but I don't even use 1/16th of the features on my LG NV3, and any of the other functions it has I can get at my computer (which I'm at most of the time), or I'm in a situation where I'm not even supposed to have a phone on me (e.g. when I was in the classroom while student teaching). They both fall into the same slot for me: If I find I have a need for them in the future, I'll hop onboard. As it is now, I don't have any use for either so it'd be a waste.

What's next? Abbreviated emoticons using eight characters or less for communication? It's like television shows splicing the content every two seconds to keep your eyeballs active. No wonder human attention spans are now competing with that of fleas.
There's email and websites/blogs. Anything more is pretty much chasing tech for the sake of it.

Actually, so far, I like it.
The first one was just good enough for me to give it a second try, and this week's was (I'm sure unintentionally) funny. They made a big deal in the first one about civilians not getting to own guns. So, in the second episode, they're attacked by pterosaurs roughly the size of a hawk or falcon.
My first response was, "You know, if you let your folks have weapons, a few would have shot-guns, and this problem would go away." It was funny to me to watch the neo-Hippies get hoist by their own petard, as it were.
Of course, I'm thinking they didn't plan for people to watch because they thought the show was a good way to teach people what not to do...

Re: Episode 2 Terra Nova......and instead of guns, it was the scientists who saved the day!
The themes running through this thing are a curious mixture so far.
'Humans trashed their evironment in the future' -- don't let this happen to you.
'Only authority figures should be allowed to have guns' -- don't worry, be happy, they will protect the herd.
'Communal living is cool' -- everything you need will be provided for you, do not question your work assignment.
'Money is bad' -- unless you want to buy that handmade guitar....wait, what?

If I have the time to be online....I'd rather be giving my 'clicks' to a site that I like, in order to help them out with their advertising rate.
So far, what I'm seeing as a net result of the Twitter/Facebook things, is that they contribute to keeping people even more addicted to their electronic devices so they can access the latest 'tempest in a teapot' and get further sucked into an addiction to the internet.
Marketing-wise, Social Media is the greatest gift ever to the electronics/computer manufacturing industry. ....And the internet service providers.

It is. Going to someone's page on Twitter can be confusing because it can look like one side of a conversation. When you sign up and follow that person, you won't see all the side conversations unless you follow both people.

106You goddamn kids, with your twitters and your texting and your rock and roll. I finally was forced to join Facebook or I'd never have contact with my nieces and nephews (who think email is for old farts) I guess I'll end up being forced to be a twit or whatever you hip young kids call yourselves
----
Joined the facebooks last January and now realize I'm old. But it did get me one hell of a Jan-Jun sex fest with a hot work associate from the past. Too bad it near destroyed her marriage though. No really... :-)

I guess I'll never be a clued-in Twit. Obviously, there's some benefit I must be missing here.

Some CelebTards are getting paid big money to Twitter. They bury little "endorsements" in their tweets, such as "I'm just relaxing having a Coke", etc..
I think FoxNews must be getting some $$$ from Twitter as much as they push it.

Training tweet --
WTH w/ PT Cruisers? Just saw 1 go by. Looks useless. Cant strap deer 2 roof, trunk 2 small 2 haul lumber, stereo 2 wimpy 4 Chemical Bros.
I think that's 137 characters. Would this make for a good tweet?

I like this site because ace is funny and insightful and the commenters crack me up. I do not want to spend all day reading snarky exchanges between our side and theirs on Twitter. Who gives a fuck?
There's a whole big wide world out there. I don't want to waste my life arguing with the mentally deranged retards on the left.

When you say "...would see this tweet." - See it.....WHERE?
Seriously, I have (a) a dumb-phone and (b) a desktop/laptop. Does Twitter send phone-texts to my dumb-phone?
Where do I get these real-time tweets? Do I have to be logged into a website from my laptop (or non-existent smartphone)? If so, then it's just a message board / chart room?
Do I need a smart phone to get the full twitter effect? Would they show up via an app or as a text?
My impression is that tweets *come to me*, not that I have to *go get them*, if so, how do they get to me? If that too simplistic / not correct?
Something is not clicking for me, maybe I need some more Vodka.

I don't use my phone for twitter because my phone sucks.
I use my computer. If you sign up for a twitter account, you login to that account and are taken to the twitter web page. You decide who's tweets you want to see by 'following' that person's twitter account. The tweets from the person/people you are following then come up on your twitter webpage.

I use "lists" to help manage the madness. You can create a list and put someone on it, even without "following" them. Then their tweets will not appear on your livestream, and you will only be looking at what they have to say whenever you choose to open up the list you put them on.
You can also group the people you do follow into lists -- for example, I have a "funny" list, and if I just want pure guaranteed entertainment, I'll go straight to that list.
Hashtags are handy for following a particular subject. For example, #OccupyWallStreet or #OWS will give you all the tweets from anyone and everyone (not just the people you follow) who have stuck that label on one of their tweets. Sometimes fun trends will get going, and last for a few hours or days. Iowahawk (@iowahawkblog) starts a lot of these, and they're great. The other night, someone started a #occupywallstreetmovies thing, in which people parodied popular movies to make fun of the Wall Street loons -- examples: My Big Fat Greek Economy; Six Graduate Degrees of Separation from Reality; Lunacy, Actually; The 40-Year-Old Undergrad; Raging Bullshit; Eat.Whine.Shove.; Young Frankensteins; Day of Whine and Posers; Nightmare on Wall Street; The Unshowered...

P.S. You can send a private, one-on-one "direct message" to anyone you follow who is also following you.
