— Geoff Unemployment rate time, Obama style!! How do you add
Yes, it's the first Friday of the month, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics just released the unemployment rate for July - 9.1%. Not much changed from last month (9.2%) or the month before (9.1%). Here's how that graphs up:
Geithner's "pulled out of his hiney" unemployment projection from almost a year and a half ago appears to be holding up pretty well. As I said at the time, though, showing that sort of projection without a solution should have gotten him fired. And the fact that we've closely tracked his projection in the 17 months since tells you that nothing the administration has done has affected the unemployment rate. Which means the lot of them should be fired.
But I'm pretty sure you were already planning to do that.
[Would do a little more data mining, but the BLS historical statistics are down.]

I haven't heard much about this, but I wonder if demographic changes are also driving the workforce participation rate down Racial and ethnic minority subgroups have lower workforce participation rates and higher unemployment rates. As a larger percentage of the workforce (and particularly the entering work force) is made up of these subgroups, we would expect the overall employment rate and participation rate to fall. Any data on this?
Combine this with an aging population, and there are some reasons not to expect the participation rate to touch the highs of the last few decades. It still will take more than this anemic growth, however, to gain any ground with the unemployment rate, low participation or not.

I like to bash Keynes as much as anybody, but I do feel a little sorry for the guy. One point of his approach was that government runs a surplus in good times to have spare cash to stimulate in the bad times. This is so far away from what the modern practitioners of Keynesianism do, it's almost no direct parallel.
Of course, the thought of a political class sitting benignly atop a pile of money, saving it for a rainy day is almost Marx-like in its idealistic simplicity...
Not to mention the ecomomic effects of government bleeding the country to fill its piggy bank.

You know how folks back in the 80s (and to this day) made fun of Reagan for calling "ketchup" a vegetable, because that way ketchup as a part of school lunches could be counted toward a healthy vegetable serving? I somehow think calling several hundred thousand "jobs" -- which aren't in fact "jobs" of any sort -- "new jobs" is a million times more damaging to the fabric of America. Unemployment numbers that go down are more a reflection of people who aren't even looking anymore than a reflection of people who have found work. But does the average functionally illiterate Democrat voter (BIRM) realize that? Answer: No. Because they are functionally illiterate Democrats (BIRMA).
I'm just a stupid plebeian female. I don't understand all this difficult politics stuff. *twirling hair.* I mean, call me crazy, but maybe this could be some sort of... I dunno... talking point?

We're seeing, in real time, exactly what "progressivism" does to an economy.
We hear everything from this administration except what has been proven to work. I read where some Washingon spokes-idiot said that the public wanted to stop hearing so much about the debt debacle and wanted to hear more about jobs. Yeah, that's all we want, is to hear about jobs.

# 74 - From Howie Carr in todayÂ’s Boston Herald :
Yet this tax year, the Web site reported, you Obamas claimed $373,289 in itemized deductions. Had you merely used the standard deduction of $11,400, you could have jacked up your taxable income by $361,889. You could have paid — excuse me, “invested” — another $126,661 in income taxes. Money that would be used . . . for the children. You and the rest of the moonbats keep saying we need a “balanced” approach to solving the deficit problem. I agree we need balance — everybody who thunders about raising other people’s taxes should balance their rhetoric by paying more themselves, voluntarily.

This is something that people need to point out in the media. People like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Matt Damon, Obama and all democrats claim they aren't paying enough taxes all the while they aren't even paying at nominal tax rate.
They are all in the 36% tax bracket, but through itemization they get down into the low 20s high teens.
Every person who advocates for higher taxes should be asked if they itemize their deductions and if so, why?

Suppose we do get a President Palin/Bachmann/Perry/heck even Ron Paul in 2013. Precious metals and commodities until the 2012 elections. If those are good (meaning more *real* GOP candidates get elected and fewer RINO pussies) then go immediately back to "paper asset" stocks and bonds.
I know Real Estate has been tanked, but if the Commiecrats are going to stagflate again, and if the RINOs roll over and accommodate, I would get back into real estate. (Of course this is so localized, "your mileage may vary" as the car commercials disclaim).

Update: On TV this morning, there was chatter about an S&P downgrade of the US after the close.
This is a rumor that's going around, but there's real no basis to it, other than what people are talking about.
In our original post we incorrectly stated that a Barclays analyst had acknowledged the possibility.
However the analyst, Barry Knapp, did not say anything on the matter.

You know how folks back in the 80s (and to this day) made fun of Reagan for calling "ketchup" a vegetable, because that way ketchup as a part of school lunches could be counted toward a healthy vegetable serving?
Unnoticed was how the Demunists in farming areas voted for that too. I remember then local and now deceased Demunist congresscritters, Bob Matsui and Vic Fazio, posturing in their oh so phony Demunsit way, only to endorse such a policy. (Sacramento has tomato canneries and lots of local farming of same).
Matsui and Fazio were notorious for that sort of crap: public pronouncements of "nuclear freeze" appease and surrender resolutions, followed by private lobbying for expansions of the Army Depot, Travis, McLellan and Mather Air Force bases, and Aerojet missile contracts.

It's bad out there: I have a buddy from my old college days that has been unemployed for over two years. Masters in Chemistry and can't get a job.
Now my buddy is just about to lose his house.
Previous employer stupidly gave the Chi-Coms a license to a coating process (over my friend's strongest objections). The Chi-Coms promptly undercut my buddy's employer -- stupid bastards apparently didn't know that the Chi-Coms don't respect the intellectual property rights of American companies.
The marxists, America-haters and Democrats (I repeat myself, however) in D.C. are perfectly happy with this state of affairs. They want a populace utterly dependent on the federal government for their survival. Don't forget, in their world-view, a free-market America is eeeeeevilTM and must be destroyed before Utopia is achieved.

Point taken, but slightly out of context of what I meant to say. We should be concentrating our efforts on making American products in America. I'm not advocating that we not trade, that's dumb. I'm advocating that we not become dependent upon foreign suppliers for anything: make it here, with enough left over for trade.

I don't like how RINO Ronmey is - but if he can beat Obama, it might be a good idea to recognize political reality.

Reality is the MSM will stick it to Romney if he gets the nomination. I think the ones they attack now are the ones they are most afraid of.

While I distrust Perry's Hispandering, you are letting the libtards define "mainstream". Hint: "religious social conservatism" IS the mainstream.

I don't think so at all. But we can see where that leads. If Perry winsthe nom I will support him. But at this point Obama would beat him. Obama - the fake Christian.

264 259 More ruh roh. King Putt did not impress the Street; down 132 now.
It was volatile while he was he was speaking. They also know the truth behind the window-dressing with these numbers and there is more trouble in the Eurozone.

Population-employment Ratio
58.1% of the country has a job.
Last time we were this low... July 1983... every month since July 1983 we've had a higher number than this... until now.
Continuously lower percentage of the population with employment = recovery?

If it really is all about the economy, by that point Perry's social conservatism will not matter, for all of you who think social conservatism is a bad thing.
But frankly, the vast majority IS social conservative and does not want Leftist Butt Piracy.

I stopped buying silver and gold last year. I'm just buying the stuff that I would have acquired if I had bartered for them using precious metals. At this point, I think the precious metals market is too inflated for me -- a lot of nations and multi-billionares are buying up the shiny stuff.
I'd recommend dehydrated/freeze-dried food (I like Honeyville: they got their start supplying Mormons and shipping is a great barging if you buy bulk), bottled water, Berkey water filter, karosene cooking stove (Butterfly brand), soap, razor blades and deoderant. Oh, and some guns and ammo to protect yourself from looters.
All these things have very long shelf life. If a miracle occurs and we don't go Weimar, you will be prepared to help your family and neighbors if a natural or "man-made" disaster occurs.

At this point Perry is not an announced candidate that has lower name recognition than Ron Paul. Others here have pointed out that standing at particular points in time do matter. The fact that Perry is even close to the Won at this point and with these factors in play is telling.
And all Repbulican candidates will be vilified. Ex: Pres. John McCain.

Hey, did anybody else notice this?
Yesterday Politico referred to Obama as "powerless" to impact the economy. Yesterday too an article from This Hill had this line as its lede:
Democrats are bracing for the jobs report due Friday morning from the Labor Department, knowing their political futures rest on the economy over which they have little control. My initial reaction was to take these comments literally as the ideological concessions that they appear to be: if a liberal Democratic President and his liberal Democratic compatriots in Congress are "powerless" and "have little control" over the economy, then what bilge have they been selling us for eighty years about managing the economy? Has the massive bureaucracy of regulation and intervention built up over the past four freakin' generations really only been a jobs program for government bureaucrats?
But then I put two and two together: yesterday Ace (and others) also noted the strange comment from Jay Carney saying that the White House doesn't create jobs.
I hate to be a conspiracy theorist (or maybe I'm just not paranoid enough usually), but it sure seems to me that the Left is advancing a new meme in concert that Obama can't really do anything about jobs. Call it a trial balloon before the 2012 race, where they know he will get hammered on a four-year record on employment that is so terrible.

Hey, all --
The S&P 500 is down about 2.2%. Did President Obama give another speech or something?
Just wondering.

That's just the point. The lamestream media is going to vilify anyone we nominate. In fact, I hope they do. I'd be more worried if they actually liked our nominee.
As Anne Boleyn said, "Ainsi sera, groigne qui groigne". (Grumble all you like, this is how itÂ’s going to be.)

Bingo! The more demonized our candidate, the better. Be hard-core, fiscally, socially, and foreign policy hawkishly.

Why is no one talking about this?
The Dems will now not have to pass a budget (apparently) but they can either reconcile Conrad's numbers with Ryan's or-- more likely-- they will do as you say and pass another round of CRs. A few Republicans have mentioned it but nobody really wants to talk about it because people are already upset with Congress as it is. Admitting that a budget can't get passed through normal means because the Senate is playing games is not exactly what people want to hear right now.

Or are they the still cooked low, but closer to reality, 'adjusted upward numbers' quietly put out much later?
