Unexpectedly, Amy Winehouse Is Dead
— Ace

Even a straight news story about her death has to acknowledge the elephant room: She's been a top draft choice for the Dead Pool for years.

Only the most sweet-souled people could not think to themselves, upon hearing of the next drugged/drunken scandal, "She'll be dead in two years."

And so she is.

It was not a complete surprise, but the news was still a huge shock for millions around the world. The size of Winehouse's appeal was reflected in the extraordinary range of people paying tribute as they heard the news...

Addiction consumed her:

...

But in the end, the music was overshadowed by fame, and by Winehouse's demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.

Last month, Winehouse canceled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Booed and jeered off stage, she flew home and her management said she would take time off to recover.

In her first introduction to the public -- "I don't wanna go to rehab, no, no no" -- she told everyone exactly how she'd die.

I suppose it's still sad, but she seemed to be courting death for years. She finally won her man.

Guess which you'll hear more about.

Oh, and F--- Nevada.

4 A few great songs, a lot of filler (well-performed, but filler nonetheless) and a spectacular flameout. And now she'll be overrated forever.

Lot's of times the stars get rid of those friends because they try to keep them away from the shit. See Elvis. Then the new friends let them do anything that they want because they don't want to be shown the door and get off the gravy train. See Elvis.

Sad that Elvis' last words were probably "Sonny if I don't pinch this loaf off I'm gonna have a heart attack."

22 A lot of this is also that serious mental illness often strikes in the late teens/early 20s. So they get rich and famous before they go crazy, which is not a good combination cause then they have the money to avoid the consequences of their craziness. A buddy of mine is a psychiatrist and he often advises people not to marry anybody under 25. If they make it past 25 without serious mental illness, they are good to go. But that a "quirky", "creative" chick at 20 might well be clinically nutso by 25. Rock stars are selected for youth as much as talent, so they can produce some great output before their mind breaks down. The drugs are often the person trying to self-medicate -- which just accelerates the mental breakdown. This happens in sports, too, but less so because you have to perform well for months at a time. Musicians (and actors to a lesser degree) can produce genius for a day or a week at a time, and be nutball crazy the rest of the time, and still become rich and famous.

29 The more a profession requires daily high performance, the fewer crazy people will succeed at it. Professions that allow periodic, intermittent high performance (music, acting, writing) allow more crazy people to succeed. The 9-5 stable job thing can be a drag for everybody, but it's really, really hard for crazy people. Also stable relationships. Stable anything really.

44 Rockers have age 27 a an almost mythic age. Janis, Jimi, Jim M, etc. If you party hard, and are expected to die, age 27 is when it usually happens. I cannot help but think it is a self fulfilling prophesy.

As for her music, I have never heard it that I know of. I stick with classical (Bach), jazz (Bird) and country (Guy Clark, Robert Earl Keen, Billy Joe Shaver). Anyway, it is a shame to see someone piss away their life at a young age.

46 "The size of Winehouse's appeal was reflected in the extraordinary range of people paying tribute as they heard the news..."

Or maybe an extraordinary number of people had an extraordinary amount of time to formulate their condolences since an ordinary inevitability was so extraordinarily evident. Absolutely no one is surprised, her appeal magnified because merely performing in between tripping seemed such an accomplishment regardless of her musical talent.

It's sad in that her demons won. Worse, and admittedly I didn't follow her at all, she seemed to keep laying out the red carpet for them. How tragic, really, is it when one gets to choose one's life and death?

This gets to the root of it.  I liked her music quite a bit but she obviously liked getting high a lot more than anything else in life.  I mean she even had a hit based on her unwillingness to get straight.  So the fuckheads, especially the libs, who call this "A TRAGEDY":  STFU & GTFO.  A tragedy is when some young kid gets shot by thugs while minding his own business, or gets lukemia.  Winehouse chose her demise; hear that word, cocksuckers, CHOICE.  She was a fucking adult and chose to engage in extremely self destructive behavior.  The only choice the libs want to celebrate is abortion (I'm not a right to life fanatic, btw; just an observer of dumbfuckery).  Well fuck you; celebrate her choice of self destruction bitchezz.

76 Amazing voice, really remarkable, she hadn't taken off in America yet, but England knew her well. And yes, it is a tragedy. That word doesn't let her off the hook. Losing something wonderful is a tragedy, even if its owner threw it away. If Van Gogh had shredded all of his paintings when he went nuts, that would have been a tragedy too. bender @ 82: That video gives up a great representation of Winehouse at her best. True artist is right: Tony Bennett had lined her up for a another of his collaboration recording sessions in September.

Underneath all the surface outrageousness, Gaga has tons of talent - great voice, good songwriter, great live performer.  People who confidently declare otherwise are only exposing their own ignorance of her.  Winehouse had a unique, old-school yet still modern sounding voice.  She put out two albums (the last was five years ago) that generated a few great songs, but she could never pull herself together enough to be a consistently good performer or to produce another studio album.  Her lasting fame came only from her unrelenting, unrepentent self-destructive drug abuse.  Contrast that with Gaga who told Howard Stern just last week that her own hard drug use was behind her and she referred to cocaine as the devil.

86 I was not a fan, but I have to agree that she had some vocal talent after listening to some of the posted vids. Can't stand to watch the vids, or any vids in general. The pseudodrama of the short attention span camera work just drives me to distraction. Other than that, did she ever sing any songs about a happy topic? Seems she was strung out on songs about sadness as much as anything else.

87 #86 - Bennett and Winehouse had already recorded their duet in March.  The album comes out in September.  Others to be on it include Lady Gaga, Carrie Underwood, Michael Buble, Josh Groban, Faith Hill, Norah Jones, Willie Nelson, k.d. lang and Andrea Bocelli.  I would think it's pretty much guaranteed now that the Bennett / Winehouse duet will be the first single.  Nothing music companies do better than cash in on a dead star (see Michael Jackson).

89 The tragedy lies in her wasted talent. No one forced her to start doing drugs, correct. The consequences for her behavior were dire, a self-imposed death sentence. But it doesn't remove the fact that she had talent, and it doesn't mean we can't be sad that she was unable to beat her demons. Addiction, despite its root cause in peoples' own behaviors, is a very, very ugly thing.

The tragedy lies in her wasted life.

92 yeah well some rich jew girl from England singing with an  accent as if she experienced life  in a ghetto for 50 years to me is just a poser who took full advantage of her singing ability to dupe her listeners. She is right up there with Mick Jagger May she RIP

<i>"...some rich jew girl from England.."</i>

Ain't you sweet.  According to you, then, no limey's ever allowed to sing the blues?  Or.. no Jewish girl is?  But a white gentile American is?

Or a Black American who's not poor enough?

She's dead and she really was a fine singer.  Aside from herself, who did she hurt?

And what the hell do you know about England, anyway?

94 Everything i have been trying to type about this comes across as mean or snarky, so I'll just say nothing about it because that is what it ultimately means to me (oooh, there is that snarky again...).
