Unexpectedly, Q2 GDP Estimates Revised Downward
— Ace

I'd sure like an accounting of how they're computing these figures because they seem to perpetually show a bias in favor of higher GDP figures.

Q1 was already revised down from a so-so 3.1% down to a meager 1.3%. Wait a second, no it wasn't. It was already at a meager 1.3% and then revised down to a verge-of-recession 0.4%.

(By the way, these figures are annualized gross domestic product figures for the quarter. They represent, in theory, all productive activity in the US. They are annualized, which means when we offer a figure like "1.3%" we mean if the economy grew at this rate for the entire year rather than the three month, one-season snapshot we're actually looking at, it would be 1.3%. In other words, for the real growth (or contraction) that occurred in the quarter, divide by four. "Annualizing" the figure by multiplying by four is done for convenience, so we can compare a one-quarter rate to, say, the average yearly growth rate in the last 30 years (guessing, around 3.1%) and compare to that.)

The last quarter, Q2, was estimated to be 1.3%. It's now revised down to 1.0%, and that's even a bit lower than the downward revision "expected" by economic forecasters, down to 1.1%.

So we are actually officially on a recession watch.

The United States is on a recession watch after a massive sell-off in the stock market knocked down consumer and business sentiment. The plunge in share prices followed Standard & PoorÂ’s decision to strip the nation of its top notch AAA credit rating and a spreading sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

While sentiment has deteriorated, data such as industrial production, retail sales and employment suggest the economy could avoid an outright contraction.

Ed notes there's one glimmer of good news--

There was one warning note: the core personal consumption expenditure index rose at 2.2%, faster than anything since 2009Q4, according to Reuters. That may be enough to keep the Fed on the sidelines, which we will know later today when Ben Bernanke gives a speech today on the economy and the FedÂ’s direction.

Yeah I don't really know what that means. I know the speed at which wealth is created is slowing to a crawl and the trend seems not your friend. Reports from the last snapshot generally show the economy deterioriating still further. There are almost no positive indicators whatsoever. So if the last half year was at an average of 0.7% on an annualized basis... well, it doesn't take too much further deterioration to bring that under 0.0% and kick off the actual second acknowledged (technical definition) recession.

Funny thing about recessions: Once they begin, economists tell you you've actually been in one for a half a year or full year. That's because once a technical recession (two back-to-back quarters of negative growth) begins, they date the recession as beginning from the last peak of economic activity.

That's why when the Bush recession hit in 2008 (if I'm remembering it right), economists then said we'd been in recession since sometime in 2007 (which was the last peak, after which later GDP figures were all lower).

In this case, if we fall into recession, it will be dated as having begun in the first quarter of 2010. (Note: I think. I don't know the details of how they date the onset of a recession.) Well before those awful Republicans even won the midterms, nevermind actually sat as a Congress and began to do things.

8 I read somewhere that the original calculations are biased towards the mean. This means worse-than-usual conditions are accompanied by downward revisions, and better-than-usual conditions are accompanied by upward revisions.

If this is true, this would explain what we're seeing. It also means that none of the revisions are truly "unexpected" -- if you bias the original calculations towards the mean, then you're usually going to adjust away from it later.

52 The beginning and end of a recession are simply determined by the considered opinions of the 7 people on the NBER's business cycle committee. There is no formal, objective definition, like 2 quarters negative. Sometimes they emphasize GDP, sometimes jobs, sometimes a mix of indexes. NBER is inconsistent.

In the 2007-09 recession, they revised GDP estimates like 2 years later. Prior to the revision, GDP peaked in the 2nd quarter of 2008 (June). After the revision, the peak moved to 4th quarter 2007 (Dec), miraculously coinciding with the NBER's pre-revision call for the beginning of the recession. A six-month difference in when the recession started.

It's been a pet peeve of mine. If 2Q of 08, US recession started after most of Europe's did. If 4Q of 07, US recession was among the earliest in Europe. I think problems started in Europe and infected us, not vice versa, as is the accepted wisdom.

88 OT:  Kooky loves Quacky and Quacky loves Kooky but an uncaring world kept them apart.  Linked on Drudge:

Secret documents in Tripoli seen by the Guardian reveal the desperate attempts made by the Libyan government in its final months to influence US and world opinion. It approached key international opinion formers from the US president Barack Obama downwards.

The regime tried to persuade the Democratic congressman Dennis Kucinich – a well-known rebel who voted against Nato military action in Libya, and opposed the Iraq war – to visit Tripoli as part of a hastily arranged "peace mission". The Libyan government offered to pay all Kucinich's costs related to the trip, including "travel expenses and accommodation".

On 22 June a letter sent to Libya's prime minister, Al-Baghdadi Ali al-Mahmoudi, by a US-based lobbyist for the regime, Sufyan Omeish, noted that Kucinich was "concerned that his personal safety in Tripoli could not be guaranteed". He preferred to conduct meetings with regime officials outside Libya. The plan was for Kucinich to meet "senior Libyan officials, including Gaddafi". The proposed trip never took place. Kucinich visited Syria instead.

I think we can safely say 90% of the AA vote, liberals, and socialists fucking straight up don't care if we went into a full on depression. Problem is that they now use the Gimmicked 'NEW IMPROOVED' inflatioin index... the one that does not count fuel, or food, or many many of the things we buy....

By the OLD inflation index... we would be in negative growth numbers.

If the Mexican troops started actually violating our sovereignty (harassing our civilians, for example), that would be a different matter.  Simply providing them assistance and a base of operations is not, in itself, a problem.

Certainly if the Mexicans started causing problems, they would need to be expelled.

Actually, it's less of a sovereignty/constitutional problem than, say, Iraq has.  We're not only over there, but conducting operations in country, including operations against people who are technically Iraqi citizens.

160 94, they did not change the definition of inflation to remove food and energy. I don't know where people get that information (Glen Beck?), but it is false. It is true they change the "basket of goods" definition every so often, but simply to match what people actually buy. Are they supposed to still include buggy whips, but not cell phones, in their basket of goods?

This "definition of inflation" shit is a red herring, IMHO. In any case, it has no bearing on this discussion.

("Core" inflation does not include food and energy. But Core Inflation is not used for anything. If it is ever reported, it is reported as "Core Inflation" rather than just "Inflation"; it is simply a separate measure with a separate name. The Fed might use it, among the gazillion other indicators it looks at, to help predict future trends.)

They believe he has done every single thing in his power to try to create jobs, to try to make sure this economy moves forward. He's gone against just fierce opposition. I think, I mean if you look at the evidence, that's true. He's accomplished a lot in the short time he's been President. But the fact is, it has not been easy and will not continue to be easy," Rep. (Note: I think. I don't know the details of how they date the onset of a recession.)

It depends on who is in office.  for Bush, they came up with a new way of gauging the onset of a recession (tied to jobs data more than GDP non-growth) in order to claim that Bush's recession started so much earlier.

I think they left those calculations after the Indonesian slimed into office.  Otherwise, they would probably have said that the last recession never ended (which it really didn't ... eye of the storm kind of stuff ...).

I think someone mentioned yesterday that had he not become president, they were considering divorce, so I'm guessing there IS no sex life between these two.  Now, since he's behind closed doors all the time and she's habitually vacationing, there may be some side action going on, but that's pure speculation by me.

284 President Obama will return to Washington, D.C., tonight, one day earlier than originally planned, White House officials said.

The president made the decision to cut short his family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard shortly after addressing the nation about the impending danger of Hurricane Irene, which he said has the potential to be “historic.”

I'll bet good money that Michelle and the kids stay in Martha's Vineyard for the last day of their vacation, costing the American taxpayer hundreds of thousands more in private jet, helicopter and motorcade costs.  All this, so that Barry can storm chase in hopes that it will be "historic," "unprecedented," and otherwise extraordinary, and he can show "compassion," "leadership" and "I am not Bush-ism."

You realize of course that both California and Massachusetts have now passed laws awarding their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

It would be some sweet, sweet poetic justice to watch MA and CA have to vote for the Republican in the Electoral College because Obama was swamped in every other state except those 2 in 2012.

A man's gotta dream I say.

It would be sweeter if it were the reverse of 2000 with Obama narrowly losing the popular vote but would win the electoral vote with CA and MA but them being forced to go for the Republican. The problem with that is I'm pretty sure electors could ignore these laws with impunity and vote how they please.

303 So what you are saying is, for Q1 we had a 0.10% GDP and for Q2 we had a 0.25% GDP, so for the first half of the year, we are actually at 0.35% GDP, if they dont get revised down again.

2.8% was what the GDP was for 2010?

Just of note, in Q1 2010 the GDP was revised 3 times, started at 3.7&, then 3.2%, 3.0%, then finished a 2.7%.

308 I just read where they had revised Q4 2008 and Q1 2009 GDP, I am guessing to make things look worse at the end of the Bush Presidency, and make it look like Obama has really changed things around.

This admin is so crooked.

Revised in July 2011

Q4 2008 was -6.8% they changed it to a –8.9%
Q1 2009 was -4.9%, they changed it to a -6.7%

They basically changed 2008 from a 0.0% to a -0.3%

Also, they still have not explained how the Q1 2011 went from 1.9% to 0.4%. Was it consumer spending?
