US Navy: We're Naming A Ship After Cesar Chavez
— DrewM

Welcome to your PC Navy.

James Gill, a spokesman for General Dynamics NASSCO in San Diego, said Monday the company suggested the name to honor its mostly Hispanic work force and the mostly Hispanic neighborhood, Barrio Logan, where the boat builder is located.

The other 13 cargo ships built by NASSCO for the Navy have been named after such notable Americans as explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, and famed aviator Amelia Earhart.

Actually, all the ships in this class of supply ship have been named after notable explorers or figures in the US Navy. That is until the most recent ship, the USNS Medgar Evers. Evers of course was a noted civil rights activist who was assassinated in 1963, though he appears to have no connection to the US Navy. Chavez did serve two years in the Navy towards the end of WWII, which he described as, “the two worst years of my life.”

Congressman and Marine veteran Duncan Hunter of California is not pleased.

The decision “shows the direction the Navy is heading” by making a political statement instead of honoring Navy history and tradition, Hunter said in the statement.

“If this decision were about recognizing the Hispanic community’s contribution to our nation, many other names come to mind, including Marine Corps Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who was nominated for the Medal of Honor for action in Iraq,” Hunter said.

I disagree with Hunter on one point, as important as supply ships are, Sgt. Peralta's name deserves to be on a combat vessel.

The Navy's got a lot of problems with the way it names ships. We need to cut the crap about naming them after political figures and stick to the basics...states, cities, battles, heroes and traditional names like Constellation and Enterprise.

Before anyone points to this and cries "Racism!" let me just say, I'm opposed to naming the next carrier and a whole class after Gerald Ford. I'm sure he was a nice guy and I know he served in the Navy but no, just no. I think the George H.W. Bush is pushing it but barely makes the cut on a curve and the Vinson and Stennis should be right out.

Traditions are important. Sailors should serve on ships whose names reflect credit on the US Navy and provide an example of the services traditions. Political figures of any stripe or figures selected for reasons of racial pride, simply do not fit the bill.

Thanks to Slu for the heads up.

We are destroying our traditions AND our country.  Please, folks, we need to band together and get these idiots out of their positions if influence.  It starts with politics but then it sweeps through the entire government.  We need Congress and the next President to take a hard look at our departments and begin a purge of these "progressives" before they destroy us all.

This Saturday in Atlanta, Herman Cain plans to announce his decision about whether or not to run for President.  I wish I could be there!  The text of the email is below.

------

As you may know, earlier this year I created a Presidential Exploratory Committee to "test the waters" for a possible Presidential Campaign.  I have been humbled by the response. Thousands have contributed money and volunteered to help. I am extremely grateful.

This coming Saturday, May 21st, I will be sharing my decision with America.  I would personally like to invite you to this very special, historic event.

Herman Cain Announcement Rally
Saturday, May 21st
12:00 PM - High Noon
Centennial Olympic Park
285 International Blvd. NW
Atlanta, GA

The announcement rally will be an afternoon of family fun and entertainment, culminating in the sharing of my decision regarding a Presidential Campaign. Feel free to invite family and friends. I hope you will join us on this special day. Click here to RSVP.

Thank you for all your support!

210 There was no 50-year rule in WWII. USS The Sullivans was commissioned a year after the five Sullivan brothers went down on the Juneau off Guadalcanal. More recently, the USS Michael Murphy didn't wait fifty years for its namesake to fade into history.

And while the USS Carl Vinson began an unfortunate series of major warships named for political hacks, the career Georgia congressman was the one who fought to get the naval rearmament bills of 1938 and 1940 through Congress. He really was the father of the modern Navy, or at least the guy who got the money to build it. Doubtful WWII would have gone as well as it did without him.

The USS John Stennis, while I am happy as hell to have a warship nicknamed "The Johnnie Reb", not so much. Maybe after the dissolution of the Federal government and she becomes the CSS John Stennis instead.

212

GHWB is pushing it and Stennis/Vinson are "right out" in deserving of carriers named after them? I dunna see it that way, Dave, although one can ALWAYS find a more deserving choice among the honored dead.

George HW Bush = Navy pilot flying WW2 combat missions at 19 years of age. Shot down...rescued. Served capably in ever-increasing positions of power for the next 40 years until he choked himself into an early retirement on the "No New Taxes" pledge.

If he stayed firm on the taxes thing, Bush is re-elected in 1992, Bill and Hillary Clinton do not poison the body politic and American history is very different, most probably for the better. Warts and all, 41 is still totally worthy of a carrier named after him.

Carl Vinson = father/founder/most active congressional proponent of a "two-ocean navy" strategery. Led congressional approval of original USS Enterprise nuke carrier. Segregationist tendencies impossible to overlook, but still quite worthy of a carrier named after him.

John C Stennis =  the only one of these 3 who one might make a plausible case for the naming of a carrier after as political in nature. Former segregationist Senator is a big strike against him but back then who wasnt? Strong proponent of modernizing the USN after WW2, but very much a political animal and a man of the 50's left who could never be elected as a modern Democrat (See: Sam Nunn, Scoop Jackson etc).

216 "The USS MICROSOFT" The Navy actually did experiment with trying to run a frigate on Windows. They had to tow it back to port. Not only did the electronics and weapons fail, even the engines shut down.

Posted by: richard mcenroe at May 17, 2011 04:06 PM (tpz0h)

217 No, both are decommissioned now. I was on the Saratoga for a few months in 1971. Posted by: Vic at May 17, 2011 07:59 PM (M9Ie6) It's a disgrace the Navy would name a ship after a hispanic communist, when there should ALWAYS be a USS Saratoga on the rolls. BTW, I suppose the USS Strauss-Kahn is out of the question now, huh?

Well people seem to forget teh first aircraft carrier named after a president was the Midway class carrier Franklin Delano Roosevelt from WWII.  You can thank the Democrats for this 'tradition.'  Followed by naming an entire class of carriers after a deceased Secretary of the Navy named Forrestal.

WWII naming conventions were so common sense laden it was not funny.  Now we got attack submarines named for cities[Los Angeles], states[Virgina], and one president[Jimmy Carter].  Cruisers used to be named for cities[Baltimore] but now are named after battles[Vincennes] and such.  Only ship class still following WWII traditions are the tin-cans.

other than being a former Commander-in-Chief, what did Ronald Reagan have to do with the Navy?!?!?

He refitted it after it was Carterized.

Winner!

Great comments, horrible decision by Navy, unless the ship is going to be used to stop illegals from sneaking in by sea.

236 CC sounds like a good name for an anchor.  Attach to a chain called Obama, and drop into the deep ocean.  Oh, did someone forget to attach the chain to the ship?

237 The problem is that at times the Navy has needed lots of names; there are only so many states, cities, heroes, rivers, and battles. During WW I the Navy acquired and commissioned 122 miscellaneous ships as patrol vessels. This group included USS Tarantula, USS Cigarette, USS Aphrodite, USS Arabia, USS Druid, and USS Bessie H. Dantzler. A similar group of 95 minesweepers included USS Gypsum Queen, USS , USS F. Mansfield & Sons Co., and USS Sappho. There was also a USS Israel, but it was a destroyer named for a Captain Israel.
